You would think.

Was a New York player-of-the year out of high school, and had a solid Rookie All-America season as a Coastal frosh recruit on an NCAA tourney squad. Coastal had a losing record the following season and his numbers were down (believe an injury). A Poughkeepsie area product, he expressed a desire to come home and be able to play in front of family. Cortland was welcoming. Both benefited.
Went back and checked Coastal rosters during Lamando's stay and, yes, many championship regulars were classmates of his.

As for Sam, we wish a team with Florida-based training had been the drafter. Certainly could have witnessed his start in the Florida Gulf League. As it is Chisox in Arizona

Cortland's Joe Brown named commissioner of the summer NY Collegiate Baseball League. Has spent recent summers coaching successful Vermont Mountaineers in New England circuit. Brown is not connected to the NYCBL Cortland Crush whose officials just announced Tommy John will be featured speaker at a late January Crush fete

Cortland baseball head coach Joe Brown was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame during the organization's annual awards luncheon Nov. 13 in Troy, N.Y. Brown was among a group of honorees that included, among others, former major league players Willie Randolph, John Franco, David Palmer and the late John Cerutti, current New York Yankees television announcer Michael Kay, and the 2016 Little League World Series championship team from Maine-Endwell Little League.

Collegiate Baseball preseason No. 1 ranked Cortland a month away from season opener at Salisbury MD. RDragons chart 14 games to the south before conference start at New Paltz whose new pilot is Arlan Freeman, erstwhile aide at Stevens. Corts show 20 road tests before finishing with 13 of final 15 at home Wallace Field.

No Florida excusion in the works but Cortland has plentiful early play in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsy vs. the likes of preseason ranked Randolph Macon (8), Salisbury (30), Susquehanna (32), Shenendoah (35), Johns Hopkins (40)

Decorated Joe Brown again needs to reload a bit in his 18th season. Good place to start is returning pitcher A. Weingarten, 9-1 in Dragons' World Series title run in '15. Did not play last year during 43-8 run and another strong WS showing.

St. John Fisher 9th in preseason list, Oswego 14th. Keystone PA directly behind Cortland

And Cortland also No. 1 in D3 Baseball preseason poll, step ahead of Keystone. Fisher and Oswego touted as well

Will the SUNYAC have a preseason poll?

Not of an official nature if past history is any indication ........but tis not difficult figuring an early 1-2 .......

Cortland debuts with 15-12 win at Salisbury, MD. RDragon bats in fine form with 15 hits including 5x6 showing by veteran S. Figueroa; Cortland pitching not so much past returning starter J. Cook (4inn, 3h, 1er, 1bb, 3k). Five arms follow with newbie P. Boice getting the final three outs following pair of Sea Gulls HRs in the ninth off predecessor. Dragons take 5-1 lead into the sixth where Salisbury ties. Corts answer with seven-run seventh including Figueroa two-run single. P. Dondero, M. Mihalski, addition J. Warner two hits each. Dondero and Warner HRs. Dragons with one error, hosts a handful and 13 hits led by 1B j. Perry 3x3, 7 rbi, 2 HR, bb. Salisbury 2-2 heading into Sunday's rematch.

Sea Gulls enters campaign 24th in D3 preseason poll where RDragons are No. 1 -- whatever that means at this point.

Cortland cupboard far from bare. Pitching staff gets big boost with return of A. Weingarten who at 9-1 led Corts to WS crown in '15 although ineffective in today's relief stint. Didn't play in '16. Capt. J. Cook (8-1, 2.96 era) returns along with soph K. Curry (4-0), J. Winters, J. Martin, P. Healey. Catching corps in good hands  with jr capt. J. Teague (.339, 43 games), jr capt. M. Personius (.304, 36g) and D1 Canisius transfer J. Massa.

Infield features S. Figueroa (.349, 50g), M. Michalski who returns from injury, jr P. Schetter, sr capt. S. Getman (.306, 25g), and D. Schweitzer. Two imports who played in the southern tier and then at South Carolina's Erskine College are soph B. Kozak (Hancock) and sr T. Phillips (Sidney).

Oufield fixture is sr N. Hart (.350, 50g) who wasn't in opening lineup, jr of/inf R. Nuzzi  (37g), soph of/inf P. Dondero (.313, 42g) and jr. newcomer J. Warner.

Key losses were 1-2 hitters F. Ricci and A. Clock, the clutch C. Ziemendorf and two-time pitching all-star S. Lamando and ace closer T. Parry.

As previously stated Cortland will not make its normal Florida swing, but instead play stiff outings at mid-Atlantic foes before the conference liftoff at New Paltz

This makes sense. Cortland has lots of pitching depth so there's no need to wear guys out in February.

Limiting pitchers' outings at this time of year? No surprise there. Has always been Joe Brown's M.O. Has a flock of arms and will test many in game situations .......as always
