Just found out that Lakeland knocked off WLC in a 5-gamer on the road-Ouch!
The last couple of seasons Lakeland's gone undefeated during the regular season-but ended up getting a high-ranked WIAC squad right away in the D3 tournament and losing right away. (Maranatha upset the Muskies early in the NAthCon conference tournament one year-2006 if memory serves correctly-but that was before the NAthCon's automatic bid kicked in.)
Other NAthCon teams that have made that conference tournament in past years
Concordia-Chicago
Maranatha Baptist
Concordia-WI
Benedictine-IL
Aurora
Dominican
(Edgewood, MSOE and Rockford have all made it one year. Need to check on Marian U)
Other 9/17 NAthCon Finals:
Concordia-Chicago swept MSOE 3-0
Edgewood knocked off Marian 3-2
Per MSOE web site-Edgewood went 3-0 at MSOE quadrangular:
Concordia-Chicago took U of Chicago to a 5th game before losing to the Maroon squad:
Concordia-Chicago, and Dominican have a good chance to gain ground at the top of the NAthCon standings this week.
CUC gets Alverno on the road while Dominican has an away match vs. Rockford.
Maranatha gets Marian U at home. This poster's pulling for the Crusaders.
Marian beats Maranatha this evening 3-0 on the road:
(This poster doesn't consider that a major upset, seeing as the Crusader women lost a boat-load of players to graduation and are in re-building mode-per the prospectus off Maranatha's website.)
Final just in:
Concordia-Chicago beats Alverno 25-10, 25-16, 25-19
Per stats off Alverno site: CUC's Potter-10 kills; Alverno's Diedrich-10 kills. CUC came back from 6 pts down early in 3rd game to take the match.
Dominican beats Rockford 3 games to 0
Concordia-WI over MSOE in 4
Some 9/29 NAthCon results:
Lakeland beats Edgewood at home 3-0
Dominican knocks off Concordia-WI 3-1
WLC gets off the in-conference schneid by defeating Rockford on the road in 3
(Curious about Concordia-Chicago/Benedictine, of all of tonight's NAthCon matchups, this figured to be the toughest to call, on paper).
Benedictine knocked off Concordia-Chicago at home, 3-1
10/2-3/09 Top NAthCon match-ups :
10/2: Dominican @ Aurora: Stars off to great start; potential statement match for Aurora
CUC vs. CUW: Cougars will look to get back on track after losing to Benedictine
(Following not necessarily a "top" match-up but an early "close to must-win" match:
Maranatha vs. WLC: The last few times these squads have met, it's been a boatload of 5-gamers. Both teams are in rebuilding mode. Warriors can help themselves some with a win tonight.
10/3: Benedictine @ Dominican: Should the Stars knock off Aurora, a win here would enable them to keep pace with Lakeland. (This poster doesn't expect the Muskies to lose to MSOE).
WLC beat Maranatha in a 5-gamer at home: (WLC: Sankey & Neuberger 23 digs each; Maranatha - DeLozier 22 kills-per Warrior press release.
CUW over CUC in 3
Edgewood over Alverno in 3
Lakeland over MSOE in 3
Aurora over Dominican in 5
Rockford over Marian in 5
Shaping up to be a real dogfight behind Lakeland in the NAthCon:
(IMHO, thought Concordia-Chicago would have had 1 or 2 more in-conference wins by now.)
10/6 NAthCon matches of note:
Dominican @ Concordia-Chicago: (Both teams are coming off in-conference losses-a CUC loss here would put the Cougars at .500 in-conference. Dominican needs a win to keep pace with Lakeland-something's gotta give.)
Lakeland @ Concordia-WI: These 2 squads have had interesting matches over the years. The Falcons beat Lakeland in a 5-gamer at home in 2005-both teams have been in the NAthCon conference tournament yearly.
A couple of 10/6 NAthCon finals:
Aurora over Rockford on the road, 3-0
WLC gets to .500 in-conference by beating Marian at home, 3-0.
The rest of the NAthCon 10/6 results:
Dominican over Concordia-Chicago 3-0 (Stars' Kammeier--10 kills per CUC box score)
Concordia-WI over Lakeland (25-12,20-25, 15-25, 21-25)
(CUW-Raeder 33 assists-11 digs, Lakeland-Paulus 11 kills, 27 digs-all per Lakeland press release)
Edgewood over Maranatha 3-0.
2 NAthCon 10/9 Finals are in:
Dominican beats Lakeland at home (25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23). With that result, the race at the top of the conference becomes more wide open.
WLC beats MSOE 3-0 at home--the Warriors are now 4-3 in conference. Gotta play a conference match on the road tomorrow-
After 10/10 results- Benedictine-IL and Aurora are on top with 1 conference loss each. Dominican, CUC and Lakeland have 2 losses. WLC's won 5 in a row, and can help itself big time with another win or two, but the Warriors' last 4 all-NAthCon matches are against teams that are .500 or better in-conference. Edgewood's slipped a bit.
10/13 NAthCon result:
Lakeland over Maranatha Baptist (25-23, 25-12, 25-20):
Per Muskie press release: Linger and Davis combined for 20 kills.
This poster's take on 10/14 match-ups:
The other in-conference leaders have an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack.
Alverno's got a good chance to get off the in-conference schneid--against Marian U at home.
10/14 NAthCon finals:
Marian U over Alverno in 3.
Edgewood over Rockford (24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 25-9)
Rockford site box score indicates: WI Eagles' Palmer-19 kills, Peckham and Lueck combined for 26 digs--
Regents' Lawler--15 kills.
Benedictine-IL over MSOE (25-16, 29-27, 25-23)
WLC over Aurora in 3.
News about a milestone reached by an Edgewood player here:
http://northernac.org/releases/2009/2009_10/20091014a.html
3 NAthCon squads have an opportunity to make statements in non-conference matches this weekend.
Lakeland plays 2 nationally ranked teams and CUC and WLC play teams that were in the "Others Receiving Votes" column in the last AVCA Top 25 poll.
10/20 NAthCon match-ups of note:
Concordia-WI @ Edgewood: WI Eagles can move up some with a win. With Palmer & Co it wouldn't surprise this poster if this one went 5.
WLC @ Concordia-Chicago: Last season the home-standing Warriors came back from 2-0 down to knock off the Cougars. Both teams need a win to keep pace with the leaders. Both squads also are coming off tough non-conference meets--somethin's gotta give.
Lakeland @ Marian: Possible "trap" game for the Muskies on the road? Wouldn't appear so on paper, but. . . .
MSOE @ Maranatha: Winner moves further away from the cellar. Another potential 5-gamer.
Two 10/20 finals just in:
Lakeland over Marian U in 3:
Aurora over Alverno in 3:
2 more 10/20 finals just in:
Benedictine over Rockford 3-1:
WLC over Concordia-Chicago 3-2:
NAthCon volleyball standings indicate that Benedictine-IL & Lakeland have clinched post-season conference tournament spots.
10/23-24/09 take on NAthCon matchups:
10/23: Aurora @ Lakeland: Muskies can put pressure on front-runner Benedictine with a win at home.
Dominican @ Edgewood: Wouldn't surprise this poster if this one went 5 (with Edgewood's Palmer & Co. in the mix, this shapes up to be a very competitive match.)
MSOE @ Alverno: Winner gets to leave basement. Per Alverno press releases, there was a mid-season change on that squad's roster. Methinks MSOE escapes the NAthCon cellar in this one.
CUC @ Maranatha: Cougars need a win badly. See comments on their matchup with Edgewood below.
10/24: Benedictine & Lakeland--THE in NAthCon showdown of the day. Unless Marian pulls off an upset, the IL Eagles can open up a bit of distance with a win, but Lakeland rarely loses a regular season match at home-somethin's gotta give.
CUC @ Edgewood: Cougars desperately need a win. Should they end up having more than 6 in-conference losses they'd be in danger of falling out of tournament contention. Edgewood's in decent shape. Pinotti vs. Palmer, another one that could go all 5.
CUW @ WLC: Last in-conference reg season home match for the Warriors-who are already guaranteed their best in-conference reg season record in several seasons (worst they can finish is 7-5).
10/23 NAthCon final:
MSOE over Alverno 3-0
Other 10/23 results:
Concordia-Chicago over Maranatha (26-24, 25-21, 25-17)
Cougars move back to .500 in conference.
Lakeland over Aurora (14-25, 21-25, 30-28, 25-14, 16-14)
Per Muskie press release --Linger --15 kills.
Dominican over Edgewood (25-22, 25-16, 25-22)
Stars' box score indicates Dominican had 3 players with double-digit digs --Lawrence 9 kills
Edgewood-- Palmer 10 kills, Lueck 11 digs
Benedictine over Marian 3-0
Concordia- WI over Rockford (per NAthCon standings)
With these results, all 8 conference tournament qualifiers are set:
They are: (per NAthCon standings)
Benedictine, Lakeland, Dominican, Concordia-WI, WLC, Aurora, Edgewood and Concordia-Chicago.
10/24 NAthCon in-conference finals:
Lakeland over Benedictine (25-17, 25-16, 25-20) (Muskie's Davis 15 kills, Paulus 19 digs)
Concordia-Chicago lost to Edgewood
Concordia-WI over WLC 3-1
Rockford over Alverno 3-0
Aurora over Marian U 3-0
Dominican over Maranatha 3-1
Lakeland has clinched at least a tie for the regular season title. Lakeland, Alverno and Benedictine are now finished with regular season conference play.
10-27: A Concordia-WI win over Marian U would put the Falcons at 9-3 and
10-28: An Aurora win over Concordia-Chicago would put the Spartans also at 9-3. A Dominican win over WLC would put the Stars in a 3-way tie for first, and Edgewood can finish the regular season at 8-4 with a win over MSOE. Still much to sort out yet. Could be a 3-way tie for a playoff spot somewhere, just where is yet to be determined.
News about an honor for a Concordia-Chicago player here:
http://northernac.org/releases/2009/2009_10/20091024a.html
Attended the WLC home triangular over the weekend. Concordia-WI and Ripon were scheduled to play the second match of the day. Ripon won the second set 35-33, but Concordia-WI ended up winning the match in 5! Wild!
10/27 NAthCon Final:
Concordia-WI over Marian U (25-18, 25-19, 25-20)
(That puts the Falcons a game behind Lakeland & Benedictine and 1/2 game up on Aurora. It also means that WLC and Edgewood will end up playing first-round matches on the road, Concordia-Chicago will also end up on the road.)
Should Dominican beat WLC at home tomorrow, and Aurora beat Concordia-Chicago, the Spartans and Falcons would finish with 9-3 records and CUW would get the 4th seed, having beaten Aurora earlier this season head to head.
The only tie WLC would have an advantage on would be if the Warriors beat Dominican and Aurora lost to CUC. (WLC beat Aurora on head to head this year.
If Dominican loses tomorrow, Lakeland wins the regular season conference title, having beaten Benedictine head-to-head.
If WLC and Edgewood remain tied after tomorrow's action, the WI Eagle squad gets the #6 seed, having beaten the Warriors head to head.
Suppose Lakeland, Benedictine & Dominican all finish at 10-2? (and/or WLC, Aurora and Edgewood all finish 8-4?) This poster will clam up and let the NAthCon commissioner & company sort those scenarios out. :D
10/28 NAthCon final just in:
Dominican over WLC (17-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17).
With that result the Stars finish the regular season in a 3-way tie with Lakeland and Benedictine at the top. If my calculations are correct, WLC will end up as a 7th seed in the conference playoffs.
More finals later.
Other NAthCon finals:
Edgewood over MSOE:
Aurora over Concordia-Chicago:
Dominican ended up winning out on the 3-way tie at the top-will have home court throughout if they keep winning:
Unless I botched up somewhere, here are the conference tournament 1st round match-ups:
Concordia-Chicago vs. Dominican:
WLC vs. Lakeland
Edgewood vs. Benedictine
Aurora vs Concordia-WI
News about a milestone reached by an MSOE player here:
http://northernac.org/releases/2009/2009_10/20091029a.html
NAthCon Tournament Final just in:
Dominican over Concordia-Chicago (25-9, 25-16, 25-19)
Per Dominican stats:
Dominican --Kammeier 11 kills, 3 players with 10 or more digs
CUC --Wietfeldt 13 digs.
Other NAthCon Championship results:
Lakeland over WLC in 3 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23)
Muskies' Paulus one of 3 Lakeland players with double digit kills.
Edgewood upsets Benedictine in 4 (28-26, 25-17, 12-25, 25-14)
Edgewood's Palmer--12 kills, 18 digs
Benedictine--Leyden 19 kills, 20 digs
Concordia-WI over Aurora in 3
WLC finishes 17-17 overall on the year and the squad's 7-5 in-conference mark was the best since an 11-5 mark back in '05 in the old LMC (the same year Maranatha and Lakeland duked it out at the top, with Lakeland winning out on tie-breakers--the Warriors also made the LMC playoffs that year-losing at home to Marian in the opening round).
This season, given A) there was a major shift in coaching (2 new assistants) B) the squad lost a couple of starters from last season and C) it fought its' way out of an early 0-3 in-conference hole, this poster's not complaining too much.
NAthCon Championship Semi-Final Results:
Dominican over Concordia-WI (17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22)
Per Star stats: CUW-- Roessler 12 kills, 18 digs
Dominican-- Kammeier 20 kills, 15 digs, Moore 24 digs
Lakeland over Edgewood in 4
Final: Dominican vs. Lakeland (Kammeier & Moore vs. the Muskies' Paulus, Linger & Co.--and Lakeland will be on the road this time.)
NAthCon Final just in:
Lakeland over Dominican (25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-10)
(Muskies had higher attack pct. the last 3 games)
(Muskies also did that in '04 at home in the LMC final.)
Good news and bad news for Lakeland followers:
Good news: Lakeland doesn't have to play a WIAC school in the first round this year.
Bad news: The Muskies' draw--Hope (MI) on Hope's home floor.
NAthCon volleyball awards are now up:
http://northernac.org/releases/2009/2009_11/20091111a.html
(At the risk of sounding "homer-ish" I'll toss out an honorable metion to WLC's Coach Balsiger for getting the Warriors in the NAthCon playoffs for the first time since '05. I posted on the other factors that figured in some 4-5 posts back.)
Hope beat Lakeland in 3 in NCAAs.

#14 ranked UW-Whitewater/Edgewood on deck:
Final: UW-Whitewater sweeps Edgewood (25-15, 25-17, 25-15). A late rally in Set 2 by Edgewood falls short, per live stats.
Next up for the Warhawks--a meet against a boatload of ranked teams at Wittenberg.
A bit more of the NAthCon opening night round-up:
Edgewood rebounds by beating Lawrence in 5
Dominican gets a split on the night, losing to U of Chicago, and winning over Lake Forest
CUC over Augustana-IL in 3.
Just found out "my" Warriors got off the schneid in their home invitational and split their opening 2 matches today. ;)
9/8 NAthCon round-up:
CUC beat North Park in 3 straight sets
WLC split, losing to UW-Whitewater and beating Elmhurst
Edgewood lost to ranked U of Chicago and UW-Oshkosh, respectively
9/10-11/ NAthCon:
WLC split with 2 NAIA squads, beating IA Wes and losing to Cardinal Stritch
Dominican beat Williams at Brandeis
CUW split, (one of the wins was over MWC favorite Beloit)
CUC lost to Marian U (too early to tell just yet if the Sabres are poised for a move upward)
Take on 9/14 NAthCon match-ups:
WLC @ Edgewood: WI Eagles' Palmer & Co will provide an interesting opening in-conference test on the road. for the Warriors.
Aurora @ Benedictine: On paper IL Eagles would be favored at home.
CUC @ Rockford: Somethin's gonna give, both of these teams are in a bit of a slump going into this one. Going with CUC
MSOE @ Dominican: Methinks the Stars are on a mission to reach a higher level after last season. They should open up with a win here.
Non-conference: Marian @ Ripon: This poster watched CUW and Ripon play a set that went to 35-33 last season. Marian also will be looking to break out of a mini-slump.
9/14 early NAthCon finals:
Dominican over MSOE:
(25-18, 25-14, 25-14)
Dominican -13 service aces
Stars' Kiepura 10 kills

Ouch!!!
Edgewood- Palmer 26 kills, 27 digs
WLC-- R Johnson 15 kills, 11 digs

WLC gets right back off the mat! :) ;) :D

(Beats the 0-3 in-conference start they got off to last season. . . )
:) ;) :D

Sabers Navis-- 21 assists, 11 digs per Marian release)
Warriors' last 2 in-conference regular season matches --both at home, CUW and Dominican, this poster hopes WLC doesn't need to beat both of those squads just to get into the conference playoffs. One or 2 more CUW losses and Edgewood will have a clear run to the reg season title if the WI Eagle squad stays as hot as it is.
One NAthCon final tonight:
Maranatha over Lakeland:
(25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12)

Edgewood's win eliminates the Cougars from the playoffs.
Lakeland/Benedictine and Concordia-WI/WLC yet to come in.,
Playoff scenarios.
Marian is in. The Sabers would own the tiebreaker over either Maranatha or Rockford, having beaten both of those squads.
Rockford/Maranatha winner on Tuesday owns the tie-breaker between them.
Shouild MSOE and Lakeland both win, there would be a 3-way tie (with the Maranatha/Rockford loser) for the last spot.
Final-per Concordia-WI site:
Concordia-WI over WLC in 5 (Ouch!)
Falcons clinch at least a tie for reg season title with the win.
Benedictine over Lakeland in 3
(25-17, 25-17, 25-19)
The IL Eagles' win eliminates the Muskes from playoff contention.
Update--MSOE is also eliminated.
Definite NAthCon playoff seeding scenarios/spots.
1. A CUW win over Marian gives the Falcons the outright reg season title.
2. In the event of a CUW/Dominican tie at the top, the Falcons own the tie-breaker.
3. Maranatha/Rockford winner is 7th seed, loser is 8th seed.
4. A WLC win and a loss by Edgewood would create a 4-way tie for second (Dominican, Benedictine, Edgewood, WLC)
NAthCon final:
Rockford clinches the #7 seed by knocking off Maranatha in 4.
(25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25)
Regents: Lawler-- 16 kills, 15 digs
MBBC: T. DeLozier-- 27 kills, 14 digs
(as per Rockford stats)
#2 thru #5 spots will be determined by tonight's results.
Wed. NAthCon finals
Aurora/CUC: to take place later--power was out at CUC campus --per their release
Dominican over WLC in 3:
Edgewood over MSOE in 4:
Concordia-WI over Marian:
First-round pairings:
#8 Maranatha @ #1 Concordia-WI
#7 Rockford @ #2 Dominican
#6 Marian @ #3 Edgewood
#5 WLC @ #4 Benedictine
11/2 NAthCon finals:
Dominican over Rockford in 3
(25-12, 25-21, 25-21)
Dominican: Kammeier- 13 kills 7 digs -per Stars site:
Edgewood over Marian in 5
(19-25, 18-25, 25-14, 27-25, 15-9)
WI Eagles Palmer 21 kills, 21 digs
Sabers-- Heberer 17 kills, 19 digs
Maranatha upsets Concordia-WI in 4
(exact finals yet to come in)
Benedictine over WLC in 4
NAthCon Sem-Final Match-Ups:
#8 Maranatha @ #4 Benedictine
#3 Edgewood @ #2 Dominican
Final just in:
Dominican over Edgewood:
(25-21, 26-24, 25-23)
Stars-- Kammeier 15 kills, 7 digs
WI Eagles-- Palmer 11 kils 6 digs
(Dominican stats)
Stars will be at home for the Tournament final.
It'll be an all-Illinois NAthCon Tournament Final:
Benedictine knocked off Maranatha
(25-27, 25-15, 25-15, 25-21)
Wouldn't surprise me if the final went to 5 sets.
Welcome to the D3 Volleyball Playoffs, Dominican!
The Stars took Benedictine in 3
(25-23, 25-19. 25-22)
Dominican: Dezelsk-- 12 kills, 4 digs
Benedictine: Cuppini-- 14 kills
3 things that may factor into where the Stars end up:
They might not get as tough a draw as Lakeland did last year if--
the UMAC entrant is placed in the same regional (unless the UMAC winner beat more ranked teams during the regular season)
TheStars' earlier win over ranked U of Chicago
How many WIAC teams get in --and where will they end up?
Developing. . . . .
Lakeland's going coach-hunting:
http://northernac.org/releases/2011/2011_07/20110720a.html
Update on Lakeland's coaching situation:
http://northernac.org/sports/wvball/2011-12/releases/20110818/cvlyy1
This just in: Alverno over Presentation in 5 --the Inferno rally from a 5 pt deficit in the last set to take this one at home--
Alverno over Northland in 5 (with this win, the Inferno squad has already exceeded its' 2010 vict0ry total) The worst the Inferno can end up with this weekend is a split--should they lose to Mt. Mary).
Maranatha, Edgewood and UW-Platteville in the same meet on the Eagles' home floor:
I hear MBBC's got a couple of new "talls" to assist DeLozier & Co. --wouldn't surprise me if theyy and Edgewood go to 5 sets.
Possible "early statement" if either NAthCon squad beats UW-Platteville? :-X :-X :-\ :-\
Final:
Edgewood over MSOE in 3
(25-21. 25=18. 25-14)
WI Eagles: Palmer -- 12 kills
Raiders: Collingbourne -- 17 digs
Shifted to CUW/Marian:
This one's going to 5 --
Marian wins this one at home
(25-20, 25-13, 18-25, 23-25, 15-10)
Sabers go on an 11-4 run to end this match
Marian; Zutz 14 kills
Maranatha beats CUW on the road in 5
Per CUW stats Maranatha's DeLozier -- 32 kills
Benedictine and Dominican figure to be key matches for the Crusaders down the road --barring the unforeseen.
Dominican/Edgewood going to a 5th set as I post:
Dominican pulls it out on the road:
(25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 15-8)
Dominican: Dezelski 10 kills 16 digs
Edgewood: Palmer 21 kills 18 digs
Should the Stars beat Benedictine and Maranatha, they figure to be in a great position in the NAthCon.
Speaking of the Crusaders, they took CUC in 4 at home, Benedictine beat Marian on the road, and MSOE got a 3 set to 1 win at Alverno.
Some 10/1 results:
Dominican over Maranatha on the road in 5:
WLC over CUW in 4
Stars are beginning to distance themselves some.
NAthCon update:
Top 8 squads get in: Marian (3-5) currently holds the 8th spot. Dominican and Benedictine have already clinched playoff spots. One more WLC win or a Marian loss, and the Warriors are in. Edgewood gets in with one win coupled with a Marian loss:
Top 4 remaining schedules:
Dominican: @ Aurora, vs. Benedictine, @ Rockford
Benedictine: @ Rockford, @ Dominican, @ WLC
WLC: @ CUC, vs. Maranatha, vs. Benedictine
Edgewood: vs. CUC, vs. CUW, @ Alverno
Barring unforeseen events, on paper per in-conference records, the WI Eagle squad would appear to have the easiest of the 4 schedules --WLC the toughest (Benedictine has only had one road in-conference loss --and that was early against Aurora). Below Edgewood's spot it's still quite a dogfight.
NAthCon site indicates WLC & Edgewood have clinched conference tournament playoff spots:
Key match-ups for teams jockeying for 5-8
WLC @ CUC (Cougars can help themselves big-time with a home win here).
MSOE @ Maranatha
Benedictine @ Rockford
(Both Crusader and Regent squads at home, Maranatha (on paper) figures to have a better shot than Rockford).
CUW @ Edgewood
Alverno @ Aurora
(Must-win matches for Spartans and Falcons -latter squad will have a tougher go of it-given WI Eagles are shooting for a higher seed)
10/18 winners:
WLC
Benedictine
Edgewood
Maranatha
Aurora
(Just a bit more distance between top 4 and 5-8 with those results).
Remaining schedules for NAthCon teams that haven't clinched a conference playoff spot:
Maranatha; @ WLC, vs. Alverno, vs. Marian
CUC: vs. CUW, @ Alverno
Rockford: @ Marian, @ Lakeland, vs. Dominican
(5 other squads are still alive, but appear to need a lot of help at the moment to get in).
Biggest conference match of the weekend: Dominican vs. Benedictine-winner would hold tie-breaker advantage.
Joining Edgewood/Alverno in progress:
Edgewood completes regular season in-conference play by taking Alverno in 3
(25-18, 25-20, 25-12)
Edgewood: Manske and Palmer 10 kills each, former also had 12 digs
Alverno: Owen 10 digs, Stuckey 9 digs
If my calculations are correct, the WI Eagles will have at least 1 playoff match at home in the NAthCon tournament--could finish in 3rd if they get help from Maranatha and Benedictine.
Other NAthCon winners last night:
Lakeland
Maranatha
CUW
Rockford
With those results, Marian and CUW will be eliminated if they lose their last conference matches.
Maranatha and Rockford are in.
(Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the locker rooms and during time-outs during Benedictine-Dominican match at Igini this evening--)
Turns out Dominican beat Benedictine in 4 to clinch the top seed.
Per NAthCon standings Lakeland landed a spot as well.
2 teams still in contention for the last spot:
CUC: A win over Alverno on the road and the Cougars clinch
CUW: A win over MSOE at home and a CUC loss, and CUW gets the 8th spot, having beaten CUC
(Marian and CUW have equal records, but since the Cougars beat Marian, if CUC and the Sabers tied, CUC would get the nod. I don't know how Marian would come out in the event of a CUC/CUW/Saber tie for the last spot.)
At the top, things get interestinng after Dominican.
Benedictine: Win and clinch 2nd seed, lose and fall into a tie with Edgewood and WLC
Edgewood: Scoreboard watch-can finish no lower than fourth.
WLC: A win over Benedictine forces a 3 way tie for 2nd, a loss and wins by Maranatha in their last 2 matches (Alverno and Marian) and the Warriors fall to 5th.
Lakeland: 6th seed regardless of how Rockford does in Regents' last in-conference match (Muskes beat Regents)
There you have it.
NAthCon Final tonight:
Marian pulled a mild upset-knocking off Maranatha on the road in 5
That result means that WLC will host a playoff game no matter how the squad does against Benedictine tomorrow night.
(Even with a loss, the Warriors finish 4th, and would get the Crusaders in that event, still, I'm sure WLC would rather face them at home then on the road if it came to that.)
NAthCon finals:
CUC over Alverno in 3
Benedictine over WLC in 4
Dominican over Rockford in 3
Opening round pairings:
Rockford at Dominican
Lakeland at Benedictine
CUC at Edgewood
Maranatha at WLC
When are these matches? I'd like to get to one of the Chicago-area games.

NAthCon "somethin's gotta give" dept.
Maranatha/Dominican match: Stars have yet to lose at home--however, Crusaders took them to 5 before losing in their previous meeting--any squad with Tori DeLozier on it can not be taken lightly.
Edgewood/Benedictine: Badger State Eagles can take this if Palmer & Co are all on top of their game and if the home-standing squad's enthusiasm over their new home floor wears off quickly. This one's too close to call.
Edgewood up 2 sets to 0 vs. Dominican on the road:
Upset brewing??
Stay tuned.
Edgewood/Dominican going to 5
~
Welcome to the NCAA Tournament, Edgewood!
Edgewood's first draw-- (drum roll, please), Carthage
U of Chicago, UW-Whitewater and Wash-MO in that same region. Is that a tough bracket or what?

Opening Night In-Conference results:
Benedictine over Alverno
Aurora over Rockford
Marian over WLC
Maranatha over Edgewood
Dominican over CUC
All of the above were (3-0)
Lakeland knocked off CUW in 4
Dominican upset #16 Carthage yesterday.
Back in the ARV category Dominican taking on MSOE as I post--
Dominican remains unbeaten in conference play, taking MSOE, (3-0) and keeping pace with Maranatha in the process.
Other NAthCon finals:
Lakeland over Alverno in 3
Benedictine over Aurora in 3
IL Eagles still undefeated yet.
9 25 12 NAthCon results:
CUC over MSOE (25-23, 17-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-10)
CUC -- Gordon 15 kills, Mackey 12 kills
Edgewood over Marian in 3
(WI Eagles: Palmer 20 kills)
Dominican over Alverno in 3
WLC over Lakeland in 3 (somewhat unexpected, the Warriors get off the in-conference schneid, on the road, yet--)
Warriors -- K Greenfield 14 kills, Johnson 11 kills
Benedictine over CUW in 3
Benedictine had a golden opportunity to make a statement vs. ranked U of Chicago last night. The match came within a whisker of going to 5, but the Maroons prevailed in 4. Rats!!! >:( >:(
Joining Benedictine/Edgewood in progress (midway thru Set 2 WI Eagles took first set--)
Benedictine/Edgewood going to a 5th set!
Final: Edgewood hands Benedictine its' first NAthCon loss (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10)
Edgewood -- Palmer 14 kills, 15 digs
Benedictine -- Kmeciak 17 digs
Dominican, Maranatha and Marian also won tonight.
5 teams are 1 1/2 games apart at the top of the table now.
10/10/12 NAthCon finals:
Benedictine over CUC (25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 26-24)
Benedictine -- Adams 18 kills
Edgewood over Lakeland in 3
(Eagles' Palmer -- 15 kills, 17 digs)
WLC over Rockford in 3
MSOE over Aurora in 3
Dominican over CUW in 3
(Both Eagle squads and Dominican have more breathing room at the top now).
10/16 results:
WLC over CUC
Maranatha over MSOE
Edgewood over CUW
Aurora over Alverno
(all by 3-0 finals)
Lakeland over Marian in 4
Playoff scenarios:
Edgewood, Benedictine and Dominican are in:
Maranatha and WLC can get in with one win each or an MSOE loss.
CUC, Rockford and Alverno have been eliminated.
10/19 NAthCon finals:
Rockford over Marian (mild upset here)
Dominican over Aurora
CUW over CUC
Maranatha over WLC
Lakeland over MSOE
(First 4 were 3-0, Muskies needed 4 sets to knock off MSOE).
With those results, Edgewood clinches the reg season title and top seed for the conference tournament. Maranatha, Lakeland and WLC clinched tournament berths. Whoever wins the Dominican/Benedictine match tomorrow clinches the second seed. Lakeland can overtake Maranatha for the third seed if the Muskies beat Rockford and Maranatha loses to Alverno (Lakeland beat Maranatha earlier).
A Benedictine win over WLC coupled with an Aurora win , a Lakeland loss to Rockford and Marian going 1-1 in its' last 2 matches would bring about a 4-way tie in positions 5-8. Highest WLC can finish is 5th with a win over IL Eagles , a Lakeland loss. and losses by both Marian and Aurora in their last in-conference matches.
4 squads are jockeying for the last 2 spots.
Marian: @ MSOE, vs. Maranatha
Aurora: vs. CUW
MSOE: vs. Marian, vs. CUW
CUW: @ Aurora, @ MSOE
10/20 update:
Marian over MSOE in 3
Lakeland over Rockford in 3
Maranatha over Alverno in 4
CUW over Aurora in 4
Benedictine over Dominican in 4
Scenarios:
Marian can clinch the 6th seed witn a win over Maranatha on Tuesday.
A lot riding on Benedictine/WLC on Wed. A Warrior win coupled with a Marian loss gives WLC the 5 seed (Warriors defeated Lakeland earlier). Wins by the Sabers and the IL Eagles and WLC falls to the 7th seed.
A win by CUW over MSOE and the Falcons sneak in over Aurora (they beat the Spartans head to head earlier.)
NAthCon final just in:
Maranatha over Marian
(14-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9)
Maranatha: DeLozier 28 kills 17 digs
WLC still has a shot at the 5th seed.
Benedictine/WLC going to 5!
Mild upset brewing? Stay tuned!
Warrior upset bid falls short:
NAthCon Tournament Pairings:
#8 CUW at #1 Edgewood (Aurora loses out on a tie-breaker)
#7 WLC at #2 Benedictine
#6 Marian at #3 Dominican
#5 Lakeland at #4 Maranatha
Heard Benedictine knocked off U of Chicago last night.
Joining #5 Lakeland/#4 Maranatha in progress:
(match tied 1-1, Crusaders up early in the 3rd)
Final just in:
Maranatha over Lakeland (3-1)
Other NAthCon finals:
Dominican over Marian
Benedictine over WLC
Edgewood over CUW all (3-0)

Final just in:
Edgewood over Maranatha
(25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23)
Edgewood: Palmer 22 kills
Marantha: DeLozier 32 kills, 15 digs
Dominican/Benedictine going to 5!
Final: IL Eagles pull it out:
(25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 24-26, 15-11)
Benedictine-- Cuppini 24 kills
NAthCon final: Benedictine at Edgewood
(WI squad took the earlier meeting at home in 5--)
All-Eagle final in 2nd set (IL Eagles up 1-0 as I post).
Benedictine/Edgewood going to 5!
Welcome to the NCAA D3 Tourney, Benedictine
IL Eagles prevail (25-23, 18-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12)
Benedictine -- Cuppini 20 kills 5 players with 10 or more digs
Edgewood -- Palmer 24 kills
Next question: Last I heard, in terms of ranked and in-tournament contention teams, Benedictine split with ranked U of Chicago and beat NEWMAC Tourney finalist MIT. Dominican actually had a better record against Top 25 teams and was regionally ranked, whereas, Benedictine wasn't-- what kind of draw will the IL Eagles get? :-X :-\
Turns out Dominican still gets in. And Benedictine gets U of Chicago for a third time. First time in the history of the NAthCon that 2 of the conference's VB teams make the NCAAs.
With MSOE hiring a new women's volleyball coach today, that makes 2/3 of the Milwaukee NACC schools. (Alverno landed a new coach a month or 2 back).
The big 3 (Benedictine, Edgewood and Dominican) have proved hard to surpass the last couple of years.
NACC schedule vs. ARV teams 8/30-9/10/13:
8/30: Edgewood vs. ARV New Paltz;
9/6: Lakeland vs. Top 25 Colorado College. CUW vs. UW=Whitewater.
Other observations:
1) Edgewood, Dominican and Benedictine start off with matches against other ranked teams as well. (noted on Top 25 board)
2) I know its' early, but it'll be interesting to find out who lands the playoff spot that Maranatha was getting on a yearly basis before the Crusaders' exit from the conference.
3) WLC's had a penchant for getting off to slow starts in-conference the last couple of seasons--is this the year that pattern changes??
4) A handful of NACC teams landed new coaches--which one will have the best showing in the end?
Preseason Poll is out....
1. Benedictine (16) 380
2. Dominican (3) 255
3. Edgewood (5) 251
4. Lakeland 214
5. Wisconsin Lutheran 183
6. Marian 163
7. Concordia Wisconsin 134
8. Aurora 131
9. Concordia Chicago 99
10. MSOE 78
11. Rockford 52
12. Alverno 31
Edgewood vs. #5 ranked Christopher Newport just underway:
Final just in:
Edgewood over #5 Christopher Newport in 4!
(25-16, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20)
Edgewood; 3 players with 10 or more digs; Martin and Evans 9 kills each
CNU: Close 17 digs, Smith 11 kills
(WI Eagles also knocked off ARV SUNY New Paltz previously)
(of the NACC squads that finals have come in on, only Concordia-Chicago and Benedictine have yet to get off the schneid on the weekend so far) (and the IL Eagles are in a pretty loaded meet out West)
Dominican/#4 Elmhurst just underway:
FINAL:
#4 Elmhurst over Dominican in 3
(25-15, 25-21, 25-19)
Elmhurst: Szarmach 17 digs 11 kills: Novak 13 kills 11 digs
Dominican: Dezelski 9 kills :11 digs, Foote 10 digs
There figures to be a lot of shuffling in the next Top 25 poll-- will Edgewood's upset of #5 CNU be enough to get the Eagles into the ARV category? (don't know, given that squad also lost to Berry and Millikin) :-X :-\ :-X :-\
Seven matches into Alverno's season, the Inferno have already achieved something in-conference they hadn't done in quite a while:
http://athletics.alverno.edu/sports/wvball/2013-14/releases/2013091109chrh
ARV Edgewood at Lakeland up shortly:
Final: Edgewood over Lakeland (3-1)
4th set final 31-29
Benedictine and Dominican also posted NACC wins, (3-0) each.
Edgewood vs. Benedictine (key battle at top of NACC) on deck:
NACC Final:
Edgewood beats Benedictine in 3
(25-18, 25-18, 25-19)
One other final: Dominican over WLC in 3
(WI Eagles now have head to head advantage of the NACC top 3)
(CUC, Alverno and Rockford all also lost NACC matches tonight)
(there could be a real dog-fight for NACC playoff spots 6-8)
Update:
A WLC win at Rockford tonight, coupled with losses by either Aurora or Marian, and the Warriors clinch a playoff spot. (I'd rather the Warriors win tonight- their last in-conference reg season match is against Edgewood at home.)
There are other scenarios in which 3-way ties are possible, but I will withhold further comment until after tonight's finals start coming in.
NACC Final #1:
Dominican over Benedictine in 3
(25-16, 25-16, 25-12)
Stars-- Kelly & Wilson 13 digs each, Dezelski 12 kills Dominican solidifies it's hold on 2nd place,
#2: Lakeland over Alverno in 3
(25-8, 25-12, 27-25)
Muskies-- Galvan 13 digs (Lakeland and Benedictine are tied, but the IL Eagles own the head-to-head tie-breaker)
#3: Edgewood over MSOE in 4
(25-7, 14-25, 25-16, 25-15)
WI Eagles: Winkler and Tesch 18 and 16 digs, respectively; Winkler 15 kills
#4: Aurora over CUC in 3
#5: WLC over Rockford in 3
#6: CUW over Marian in 4
(19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19)
CUW: 4 players with 13 or more digs; Eggebrecht 10 kills (this result coupled with WLC's win over Rockford seals a playoff spot for the Warriors)
(Alverno, Rockford and CUC have been eliminated).
Head-to-head for last 3 contenders:: MSOE -- beat Aurora, plays Marian Sat.
Aurora -- lost to Marian, lost to MSOE,
Marian-- beat Aurora, plays MSOE Sat.
Unless I'm missing something, Marian is still alive, but the Sabers need to beat MSOE and hope CUW knocks off Aurora.
Further notes on some of Saturday's matches:
CUC/Alverno: Thowgh both squads are out of playoff contention, Alverno's got a good chance for an in-NACC win at home-
Dominican/Lakeland: Winner here clinches #2 seed for tournament.
Edgewood/WLC: WI Eagle squad has a chance to run the table with a win on the road here.
MSOE/Marian and Aurora/CUW: Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the locker rooms and huddles during these matches--
MSOE/Marian on deck:
Final:
Marian over MSOE in 3:
(25-22, 25-20, 25-18)
Sabers: Lamberty 12 kills Jansen 16 digs
Final #2: Edgewood over WLC in 3
(WI Eagles run reg season table and have home court for entire NACC tourney.)
#3; Bendictine over Rockford in 3
(IL Eagles snap an in-NACC 2 match losing skid)
#4 Aurora comes back from 2 sets down to stun CUW!
(23-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13)
Turns out MSOE is the squad that loses out of the NACC playoffs on tie-breakers.
Last night's Alverno/CUC match was exciting as well, going to 5 sets, with CUC prevailing. (It would have been nice to see Inferno coach Munoz and the squad get an in-NACC home win, though.)
Non-conference update:
#21 UW-Stevens Point and Edgewood are going to 5!
WI Eagle upset bid falls short:
Pointers win
(25-12, 16-25. 25-15. 28-30, 15-7)
UW-Stevens Point: Brunkhorst 26 kills, Picel 27 digs
Edgewood: 5 players with 10 or more digs, Winkler 14 kills
Taking in #5 CUW vs. #4 Lakeland in 1st Round NACC Tourney action:
Two NACC finals already in:
Dominican over WLC:
(25-16, 25-17, 25-21)
Stars' Dezelski had double digits in kills and digs-- this was the last match for 7 WLC seniors-- Warriors figure to be in rebuild mode for the near future
Benedictine over Aurora:
(25-18, 25-15, 25-12)
IL Eagles: 3 players with 10 or more digs, Bowman and Kovacich 11 and 10 kills respectively
Final #3:
Edgewood over Marian (3-1)
Now CUW-Lakeland is the only match in progress yet
This #4 vs. #5 seed match is living up to its' billing allright--
CUW/Lakeland going to a 5th set as I post:
Final #4:
Lakeland pulls it out at home over CUW:
Semi-Final Pairings:
#1 Edgewood vs #4 Lakeland
#2 Dominican vs.#3 Benedictine
(First look-in on Benedictine/Dominican: Stars up 1-0 as I post):
Other NACC semi-final-Edgewood up 2-0 on Lakeland going into the 3rd set:
Final:
Edgewood over Lakeland:
(25-18, 25-18, 25-19)
Edgewood: 4 players with 13 or more digs.
Final:
Dominican over Benedictine
(25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22)
Dominican: Dezelski 22 digs, 18 kills
Benedictine: Cuppini 12 kills
It'll be Dominican at Edgewood in the NACC final:
Dominican/Edgewood (NACC Final) midway thru 1st set at the moment:
Final: Dominican over Edgewood (3-0)
(2nd year in a row the WI Eagles have lost the NACC Tourney final at home.)
Dominican got a tough first round draw-- regional host Elmhurst, and should the Stars get past the Blue Jays, the Wash-MO/UW-Whitewater winner- Webster-MO is the only other unranked squad in that regional--
Edgewood beat SUNY-New Paltz and Chris. Newport, yet the WI Eagle squad does not get in (SOS?)
Elmhurst sweeps Dominican (3-0)
NACC still has yet to win a D3 Tourney match:
NACC 2014 Pre-Season Poll:
1. Edgewood
2. Dominican
3. Benedictine
4. Concordia-WI
5. Lakeland
6. Aurora
7. WLC
8. MSOE
9. Marian
10. Concordia-Chicago
11. Alverno
12. Rockford
So far, the NACC has gone 1-1 on the day, (Alverno took Beloit in 3, while Lakeland lost in 3 to ranked UW-Wlhitewater:)
In the NACC's first mild upset of a ranked team in 2014, Dominican beats #17 U of Chicago in 4 --
Heard CUW went undefeated this opening weekend.
NACC In-Conference play begins tonight:
Most intriguing match-up: Edgewood at Concordia-WI -- Falcons got off to a hot start, while Edgewood's record may not be all that great, the Eagles have played several Top 25 teams -- and they were picked to win their 3rd straight NACC regular season title. We'll see if CUW can make an early statement.
Another match to watch: Rockford vs. Alverno. Somethin's gotta give. The Inferno beat the Regents on Rockford's home floor last season--does Rockford turn the tables, or do the Inferno get an in-NACC win at home?
Edgewood/CUW is going to a 5th set!
CUW gets the win at home--
Rockford beats Alverno on the road in 3
A couple of key match-ups at the top of the NACC are coming up today:
Benedictine at CUW: Somethin's gotta give--the loser here falls out of first place in the standings.
Edgewood/Dominican: Stars are also undefeated in-conference going into today. Edgewood can tighten up the race with a win here.
Another key battle coming up in the NACC tomorrow night:
Concordia-WI/Dominican: Loser falls out of first place.
Crosstown rivalry--Alverno/MSOE: Inferno have gone to 5 with a couple of other NACC squads, just have yet to get over the hump.
Marian, Benedictine and MSOE are still alive for the last NACC playoff spot.
Marian and MSOE play each other later today.
Benedictine gets Rockford. I'm figuring on an IL Eagle win here, but Alverno took Benedictine to 5 earlier this year, so---
Speaking of the Inferno, they can say they didn't finish in the NACC cellar alone if they beat CUC on the road and WLC loses to Lakeland.
Benedictine and Marian both won today, but the Sabers got the last NACC playoff spot because they beat the IL Eagles in a 5-setter head to head;
CUW, Dominican, Edgewood, Lakeland and Aurora also get in.
NACC Tourney:
Only unexpected result was Edgewood knocking off CUW on the Falcons' home floor in the semi-finals.
Aurora beat Lakeland in 5, then took Dominican to 5 before losing
Domincan punched its' ticket to the NCAA tournament by beating Edgewood in 4.
Dominican gets Carthage on the Kenosha school's home floor on Thursday.
Joining #5 Aurora vs. #4 Lakeland in progress in NACC Tournament action:
(Aurora took the first set)
NACC FINAL:
#4 Lakeland over #5 Aurora in 4 sets.
#3 CUW was ahead of #6 Benedictine at last check.
Dominican takes the NACC AQ, beating Edgewood in a 5-setter.
2021 Opening Day in NACC play:
Long story short:
CUW, WLC, Dominican and CUC all get sweeps on the day. Not sure if any of those squads make the next AVCA Top 25 poll. (This week would be the time to do it, given 2 Great Lakes Region power conferences--Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and OAC-- are scheduled to begin play in the following week--)
:-X :-\ :-X :-\
WLC split with ARV Concordia-WI;
Both sets went the full 5, Warriors taking the 1st match, Falcons the 2nd.
Aurora and Dominican join CUW as far as NACC representation in ARV category of 3/17/21 Top 25 poll:
Hopefully, 1 of those squads can get a hot run going--
ARV Dominican over Concordia-Chicago in 3 sets
(25-17, 25-20, 25-16).
Dominican: .304 team hitting pct. for match.
Sinickate .478 hitting pct.
Joining #22 Aurora vs. ARV Dominican in progress. (Aurora up 1 set to nil).
3 other NACC North notes:
ARV Concordia-WI won both matches over Edgewood.
Marian pulled off 2 mild upsets, doing the double on MSOE earlier today.
WLC did the double on Lakeland yesterday, and clinched a NACC North playoff spot in the process.
NACC Match 1 Final:
Aurora over Dominican in 4 sets:
(25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18)
Aurora: 14 service aces in match Avery .283 hitting pct.
Beebe: 42 assists
Stars need to win Match 2 to stay even at the top of the NACC South.
Aurora, Dominican, Concordia-Chicago and Benedictine are in the NACC South playoffs.
Aurora/Dominican night-cap match going to a 5th set:
Match 2 Final:
ARV Dominican over #22 Aurora 3 sets to 2
(25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 10-25, 15-9.)
Dominican: Outhit the Spartans .217 to -.037 in Set 5
Magiera .391 hitting pct. for match
6 Star Teammates also hit .280 or higher
Aurora: Beebe 49 assists
Brown .571 and Lauer .500 hitting pcts respectively.
Stars salvage a key split and remain tied with the Spartans at the top of the NACC South.
MSOE @ ARV Concordia-WI up shortly:
Match 1 Final: ARV Concordia-WI over MSOE in 4 sets
(25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14)
CUW: 11 service aces Nigl .375 hitting pct.
3 other Falcons .250 or higher hitting pct.
MSOE: Borchert .421 hitting pct.
ARV Dominican @ CUC joined in progress (Stars up 1 set to nil).
Final: Dominican over Concordia-Chicago in 3 sets.
(27-25, 25-22, 25-17.)
Dominican: Magnussen .333 hitting pct.
Schellhasse .294 hitting pct.
Stars keep pressure on Aurora in race for the top seed in the NACC South.
Today's the last day of NACC regular season competition:
NACC South: All entrants determined, still unclear as to whether Aurora or Dominican has the top South seed.
NACC North: WLC, CUW and Lakeland are in, Marian, MSOE and Edgewood are still in contention for the final North spot.
Scenario 1: Marian sweeps CUW, the Sabers get the spot. (WLC gets the #1 seed in the North??)
Scenario 2: MSOE sweeps Edgewood, CUW sweeps Marian, MSOE gets the spot. MSOE must sweep.
Scenario 3: Edgewood sweeps MSOE, CUW sweeps Marian, Edgewood gets in.
Scenario 4: Edgewood and MSOE split, CUW sweeps Marian, Edgewood gets in.
(In the event of a virtual tie between Edgewood and Marian, Edgewood swept Marian head to head, those 2 squads can
not finish with exact identical regular season in-NACC records.)
Match 1 Final: Edgewood over MSOE in 3 sets:
The loss eliminates the Raiders from NACC post-season competition:
(MSOE could still tie Marian at 2-6 in conference, but Marian swept the Raiders head to head).
Match 2 Final: MSOE salvages a split on the road, beating Edgewood in 5 sets.
(23-25, 25-13, 25-10, 23-25, 15-11)
CUW over Marian in 3 sets in their Match 1
The NACC North playoff entrant will be determined by Marian/CUW Match 2 result.
If the Sabers salvage a split, they're in, a Falcon sweep and Edgewood is in.
CUW vs. Marian Match 2 Final:
The Falcons take it in 4 sets
(25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 25-15).
CUW: 4 players with hitting pcts. .300 or higher.
Welcome to the NACC North playoffs, Edgewood!
CUW clinches the top North seed with today's sweep.
It'll be CUW vs. Edgewood and WLC vs. Lakeland on Thursday night.
NACC South Playoff Match-Ups:
Aurora vs. Benedictine and Dominican vs. CUC.
NACC Pre=Playoff Notes:
X-Factors-- Lakeland went 2-0 at a tournament in Indy last weekend, beating Augie-IL and once-ranked Earlham. CUW also competed in Indy at the same meet, going 1-3, beating ARV Webster, and losing to ARV IL Wes, Earlham and current #3 ranked Carthage. We will soon find out if playing that tougher competition puts a long term boost in the Muskie and Falcon play.
Hottest team (5 match winning-run): Lakeland
NACC North:
Postponed match--CUW/Edgewood: CUW-Himmelman 3rd in hitting pct. (.339), and avg. blocks/set (0.97). Edgewood's Uczen is 3rd in digs/set (4.80) and in overall number of digs (197) CUW: 3rd in in-conference hitting pct., Edgewood 7th. CUW-2nd in in-conference service aces (89), while Edgewood was 5th, (80).
Postponed match--Lakeland/WLC: Somethin's gotta give, WLC has won its' last 4 matches. WLC: Goba 4th in avg Aces/set (0.55) Weide 2nd in avg blocks/set (1.00). Raasch 6th in in-conference hitting pct. (.304) WLC had 70 in-conference service aces, compared to Lakeland's 43. Lakeland--Baumgartner 3rd in in conference spike points (101) Pingitore 3rd in in-conference digs (178). If the Warrior setters and hitters keep things even with the Muskie setters and hitters, the better WLC's chances.
NACC North favorite: CUW (on paper)
NACC South:
CUC/Benedictine: CUC: Henline-2nd in spike points (151) and avg. spike pts./set (4.08). Benedictine--Primas 5th in digs (163), and avg digs/set (4.18). On paper this is the NACC South match up with the most evenly balanced squads.
Dominican/Rockford: Dominican- Sinickate 4th in hitting pct. (.330); Sinickate and Jones 3rd and 4th in spike points (132 and 114, respectively) Labadessa 2nd in avg Aces/set (0.64). Dominican 2nd in in-conference hitting pct. (.224) Rockford--Crain appears to be one of the Regents' best players. I watched CUC knock the Regents off in regular season action earlier. Dominican should win this one.
NACC South favorite: Dominican (on paper) (with Aurora apparently having to back out)
Final: Dominican over Rockford in 4 sets:
(25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-15)
Dominican: McCallum .625 hitting pct. Stars' entire squad hit .280 for the match.
Final: CUC over Benedictine in 4 sets.
(18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-13).
CUC: Henline .308 hitting pct. 3 Cougars had 11 or more digs.
Benedictine: Griffith .412 hitting pct.
It'll be Dominican vs. CUC for the NACC South title.
Stars went 3-0 against CUC during the regular season, with one match going 5 sets.
Update: Edgewood @ WLC in the NACC North tomorrow. (Lakeland had to back out--COVID protocols.)
NACC North Championship Final:
WLC over Edgewood in 3 sets:
(26-24, 25-20, 25-12)
WLC: M Pye and A Charron .353 and .333 hitting pcts. respectively. Warriors offense forced Edgewood to commit 23 attack errors, (WLC had 13) WLC got 20 points off of 9 service aces and 11 Edgewood service errors. (when almost 1/3 of the point output is accounted for on short serve plays alone it reduces the amount of strong at-net play needed.) WLC had enough net play when needed and the Warriors were able to find several gaps in the WI Eagle defense as well on longer rallies.
Edgewood: Daniels and Carlson .429 and .400 hitting pcts. respectively. WI Eagles put up quite a battle, particularly in Sets 1 and 2..
NACC South Championship Final:
Dominican over Concordia-Chicago in 4 sets:
(25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16).
Dominican: .280 team hitting pct. for match
4 Star players with .276 or higher hitting pcts.
CUC: Stonich .242 hitting pct.
Aurora (ARV in the Top 25 pre-season poll) has an opportunity to make a statement--Spartans get #18 St. Benedict-MN right off the bat, several ARV squads right after that and then are scheduled to end their second weekend of the season against #13 UT-Dallas.

Despite going 1-2 against ranked or ARV teams last weekend, Aurora is still receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll.
Joining St. Norbert vs. UW-Oshkosh in progress: Green Knights up 2 sets to 1 at the moment (should they win, they get off the schneid).
St. Norbert/UW-Oshkosh going to a 5th set:
Developing. . .
Final: UW-Oshkosh uses a late come-from behind rally to shock St.Norbert on the road in 5 sets:

Not so good news, Aurora totally dropped out of the AVCA ARV category in the Top 25 poll.
Good news: Concordia-WI upset a couple of Top 25 squads earlier this week and is now ranked #25.

WLC over Lakeland in 3 sets: Warriors: Sarles .400 hitting pct.
Aurora over CUC in 3 sets:

In the lone NACC match involving a Top 25 in poll team ARV Concordia-WI knocks off Alverno in 3 sets.
Falcons: .393 team hitting pct. for match.
Once in poll Aurora is in action against Dominican as I post.

Green Knights: Terry .375 hitting pct. Maastricht 17 digs (among the top in the nation in avg digs/set)
Stars: McCallum .571 hitting pct.
MSOE/Edgewood still in progress yet: (A Raider win puts them at .500 in conference. An Edgewood win enables the Eagles to keep pace with WLC and Aurora at the top of the standings.)
UPDATE; Edgewood/MSOE has now gone final: Eagles win in 4 sets
(26-24, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18)
Aurora is the only NACC team which hasn't lost an in-conference match yet. NACC's best scenarios would be to have either the Spartans or ARV Concordia-WI win out the rest of the way. (Spartans have a non-conference match against ranked U of Chicago late in the season. Still early. :-X :-\
St. Norbert vs. Lakeland and ARV CUW at Benedictine coming up:
(Noteworthy: Green Knights' Liz Maastricht is among the best in the nation in 2 defensive statistics:
She leads the nation in total digs (480), and is 4th in the nation in Average
Digs/Set (6.32). (thru games of 10/14/2021).
Forgot about ARV Aurora: Spartans got a home win over Alverno in 3 sets:
Updates: ARV CUW over Benedictine 3 sets to 1

Other NACC winners tonight.
WLC, Edgewood, MSOE, IL Tech
Both NACC ARV teams win in-conference tonight, CUW over WLC and Aurora over Benedictine, each match went 3 sets. I'm hoping 1 of those 2 top squads gets some distance from the rest from here on out.
Joining IL Tech/ARV Concordia-WI in progress:
Final: ARV Concordia-WI over IL Tech in 3 sets:
(25-18. 26-24. 25-13)
CUW: 3 players with .667 or higher hitting pcts.
IL Tech: Graham 10 spikes for points .333 hitting pct.
Scarlet Hawks led for a good chunk of set 2, but Falcons rallied behind the serving of libero Madelyn Alton to overtake them late.
Falcons clinch a NACC tournament spot and continue to put pressure on Aurora, who gets MSOE later.
6 NACC squads are jockeying for the last 4 playoff spots:
Benedictine (8-3)
MSOE (7-4)
Edgewood (7-4)
IL Tech (7-4)
St. Norbert (7-4)
WLC (7-4)
Green Knights get ARV CUW today, and WLC gets ARV Aurora, so of the 5 tied squads, on paper, the Green Knights and Warriors would be most likely to take losses. WLC is hoping for a Lakeland upset of IL Tech today. Concordia-Chicago/Edgewood could be interesting , too (Cougars took WLC to 5 sets last week).MSOE should beat Rockford.
Well, well. ARV Concordia-WI was upset by St. Norbert, and Concordia-Chicago knocked off Edgewood. Every other match went as expected. Benedictine clinched a NACC playoff spot yesterday.
5 teams battling for 3 spots.
Scenario 1: MSOE, IL Tech and St. Norbert all win next Wednesday, they're in. (MSOE gets ARV CUW, IL Tech gets ARV Aurora, St. Norbert gets Alverno). On paper, St. Norbert could finish as high as 4th, barring an upset elsewhere. In terms of tie-breakers, Benedictine beat St. Norbert head to head, but the Green Knights got victories over IL Tech and MSOE earlier.
Scenario 2: MSOE and IL Tech lose, St. Norbert wins. Green Knights are in. Edgewood beats Lakeland and WLC beats Marian. In that event, there would be 4 squads with 8-5 records, MSOE, IL Tech, Edgewood and WLC. Warriors went 1-2 (knocking off only Edgewood) . Edgewood went 1-2 (beating only MSOE), MSOE went 2-1 (losing only to Edgewood) IL Tech went 2-1 (losing only to MSOE) Unless I'm missing something, MSOE and IL Tech would be in.
There are more, but since I can't see Alverno knocking off St. Norbert, I won't go any further. (as far as the last spots).
Should Aurora and Concordia-WI finish tied, the Falcons would get the top seed in the NACC tournament, having beaten the Spartans head to head.
Regardless of next Wednesday's in-conference results, here's who did better than expected in the NACC:
IL Tech (was picked 12th, but will finish much higher than that)
MSOE (was picked 10th, also will end up better)
Benedictine (picked 8th, already in NACC Tournament)

UPDATE: MSOE gets the 5th seed and IL Tech gets the 6th seed. WLC and Edgewood are eliminated on tie-breakers.
Aurora gets home advantage throughout the Tournament. Concordia-WI gets the other bye.

Kudos to Alverno, who ended a 17-match losing run going back to last season with a Match 2 win over La Grange.

Rockford and Alverno are in a tight one as I post. 4th set, Regents trailing 2 sets to 1 but leading and should that hold, they go to a 5th set.
UPDATE: Rockford over Alverno in 5 sets:
(18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-20, 15-12)
Inferno used a late rally to make it 13-12 in Set 5, but Rockford then got the last 2 points for the win here.
31 total service aces
Rockford; .257 hitting pct.
