That is unfortunate for all those student-athletes at SMU and MIAC wide. I know at SMU [not sure about other schools' policies] teams have been, pretty much, segregated from each other.

I also know that there is two ways to be quarantined via the MIAC, if your team has tested positive OR you have played a team that had players who tested positive. The bummer is that at this point in the season there is no more dates to 'postpone' to.

My kid was happy to be able to play 8 games when it looked like no games would be played [of course bummed that his senior season was a  mess and ended short]. I commend the Presidents, AD's and the MIAC for making this work. A little closure [although incomplete] for our kids.

I feel for all of these young men.

New Top 15 poll is out:
UST up from 7 to 5. St John's falls out. Top 15 on a short season is going to be very unforgiving. No idea what to think about St John's after that brutal loss to Bethel. My first thought was maybe Bethel is pretty good, but they've got losses to Hamline and 2 to St Mary's.

St Thomas has the fewest games played of any team in the poll and tonight's game with St Mary's has been postponed also. Only 2 left, SJU and Bethel.

5 if the 9 games scheduled for this week have been canceled/postponed.  Taking into account hockey and WBB and WH, a solid majority of scheduled events have been shelved....with Concordia, Hamline & SMU being involved in most of them. Sad end of strange season.

RE: the National rankings---I am shocked that SJU got any votes, much less 17 after last week's nightmare pair of games. Losing soundly to UST was bad enough but to get hammered like they die at home by Bethel is nothing short of embarrassing. bad week? horrible day? over-rated?

Maybe not, but 7 of 12 SMU athletic events scheduled for this week have been canceled or "postponed."

MIAC is allowing each team 11 games. I know that SMU has added SJU, GAC, Hamline, Bethel as non-conference games. If other teams have less I am sure it is because they want fewer or couldn't make all 4 games fit.

In fact the MIAC season starts on Friday, January 29 at 7pm when SMU travels to Collegeville to take on SJU [Non-Conference game]

Fingers crossed all these young men make good social distancing and mask choices.

Go Cards!

Looks like every participating MIAC team added three NON-conference games vs MIAC schools to their schedule for a total of 10 games each (which meets the NCAA threshold-- right Pat?). This includes a UST @ SJ2 battle on March 3 in Collegeville-- one week after the final MIAC battle between the two.

Carleton and now St. Olaf. There isn't going to be an MIAC season is there..

Any MIAC or NCAA news or rumblings? Kind of getting itchy.

Wow, that is too bad we won't be able to see St. Thomas v St. John's #4

Now that the season has come to an abrupt end, what's up for next year?

St. John's loses two senior starters in addition to two senior reserves. St. Thomas also loses two senior starters.

I presume no one will catch them even with their losses.
No, UST only loses one starter (Anderson). Also losing MIAC 6th man of the year Hannah. There is a possibility that Anderson - who missed his entire sophomore season with injuries- could come back but I'm expecting he will graduate in May and pass up the 5th year.

Thanks for the correction.  I mistakenly had Hannah as a starter. Unfortunately, he had starter numbers and his graduation will be a huge loss, not unlike losing a starter.

Was Nate Albers injured last night? I didn't see his name in the boxscore [or maybe I just missed it].

Poor kid. Bummer to end the season not on the court with his team..

The less said the better about the St. John's St. Olaf game (from my perspective).  But I do want to say that the extended ovation from the St. John's fans, coaching staff and players when the Ole seniors came out of the game toward the end was very nice and classy.  Why I love D3 sports.

Of course you can dare. I am hoping SMU will be hosting St. Olaf on Saturday.. ;)

Wow, almost spot on..

Looks like missing Carik really hurt Augsburg. Good for St. Olaf for getting the win after the controversy that was the previous SO-Augsburg game.

I was worried that my Red Birds would be too deflated to pull this one off. I will admit I was nervous until :47 seconds when Bethel unloaded the bench. The UST memory was too fresh. SMU never let Bethel back in the game. It got closer but of course, Bethel is good and this is playoffs.

I know cliche but literally history being made for SMU. First ever playoff win. If given the choice to beat UST on Saturday or win against Bethel last night, I would take beating Bethel last night. I can't explain or describe how great that playoff win was.

Not sure what to think about the rematch with UST but you know, I know the boys would not have it any way..

Quote from: SUMMIT? on February 25, 2020, 01:44:51 PM

In the 19 seasons in which the MIAC Playoffs have had six participants, the #5 seed has won just four times and the #6 seed has only won eight. No #5 or #6 seed has ever reached the championship game (no #3 has ever won the title either).... these trends do not bode well for SMU and Olaf. Still, I expect both games tonight to be highly entertaining and close till the final minutes.

i think a key in the Augsburg-Olaf game will be Matt Karik-- he has not seen action in the Auggies past four games and played less than 15 minutes in six of AUG's 7 games prior to that. A healthy Carik and the Auggies should roll....without him the game could be as close as the Jan 22 meeting of these two teams (75-74 Augs).

Will Saturday's loss to UST devastate the Cards or will SMU take solace in the fact that they played well enough to beat the (now) #2 team in the country? If they can bounce back from that loss, I see SMU slipping by Bethel....if not, it could be a Royal win, possibly handily.

The first game [Bethel win] the Red Birds were without Anthony. The second game [SMU win] Bethel was without Kingland [as GoldandBlu said].

Who knows. I hope the game is close and fun..

'I think the SMU - BU game will be a close one...close matchup in SMU's favor in their last game (w/ bethel missing Kingland), and SMU seeming to be playing as well as they have all year...'

How many steps did the Tommies player take on that final, game winning drive to the basket?
You can decide for yourself:

I thought the same in the moment but the replay looks pretty clean.
Certainly had a few calls break our way in the big comeback, but also had a few bad ones go against us as well. I'll take it. Never doubted for a second.

If my calculations are right-- a Bethel win over SJU gives the Royals the 3-seed and UST the top seed regardless of its outcome vs. SMU. A BU loss, coupled with an Augsburg win means Auggie is the 3 and Bethel is the 4. If both Augs & BU lose, Augsburg is the 3 seed by virtue of their sweeping SMU vs BU's split with the Cardinals.
