With the new Top 25 , http://www.d3football.com/top25/2017/week2

Two thoughts:

1) I had no idea TMC suffered a defeat with the lack of chatter here.  What went down in Crestview Hills??
2) Even as a fan of the arch rival school, I gotta say Carnegie Mellon is completely flying under the radar.  They gotta be the best team remaining in the country who is not getting a single vote in the top 25.

I wasn't present for the game, but did watch.  It looked like Bridgewater showed up and TMC was caught in a week where they weren't completely focused.  Add to that the penalties; 7 personal foul/unsportsmanlike penalties and now an important game has turned into a playoff game.  Like last season, where they played 9 playoff games prior to the actual playoffs, this year they have 8.

This had trap game written all over it and TMC played right down to it. A low profile opponent who they beat the snot out of last year surrounded by a huge OOC revenge game and their hated conference rival. Textbook trap and TMC fell right into it and played awful. Still, the Saints should have been good enough to win. A very poor effort.

Looks like we will get two "blockbuster" games this weekend:

Hendrix (2-0) @ Centre (2-0)
Rhodes (1-1) @ Berry (2-0)

Plus, the Sewanee @ Austin matchup will tell us a lot about both teams and their improvement (or lack thereof)...

Sewanee was completely unprepared for W&L. The previous head coach had a lot of experience with W&L's offense, he coached in Lexington for a while, and it showed in a series of battles between the teams regardless of relative quality of the players. This Sewanee team had nothing. They were unprepared and undisciplined and didn't hold their assignments on defense at all. W&L basically pulled the starters at halftime and still almost put up 600 yards of offense. Sewanee did score some in the second half on the second and third stringers, but even then W&L's offense was still scoring almost at will.

I think the new head coach just got a rough wake up call. I don't expect Sewanee will show much improvement this year, and the coach is going to have to do a better job of preparing his players for opposing schemes.

Further, he should know better than to let his team run through the opposing team's warm ups. It didn't endear the Tigers to the Generals at all and provided some more motivation to beat the tar out of the visitors. Not something Sewanee can afford at this point.

Guys Pat is correct. If he was running a top 40, everyone would vote for 40 teams. In doing so, you'd get a top 40. But since people only vote for 25 teams, you can't be the 40th best based on the information. Just because 1 person put a team 24th doesn't mean enough people would put the team that high if it went all the way to 40 spaces you would get listed. You can interpret it however you want, but if people only list 25 teams then it is sloppy to add the Receiving Votes and slap a number on it. It's just bad methodology and bad math. Is it a big deal? No. But Pat is correct.

W&L conceded an own goal with less than 3 minutes to play in regulation. Tough way to head into overtime but the Generals and F&M Dips go out on a 2-2 tie. Good game. Pretty even. I think overall W&L had a little bit more of the play, especially in the second half when they pulled in 2 goals off corners to take a 2-1 lead, but definitely a tough way to end.

We will find out what kind of team W&L has as we travel to Calf. to face CMS this upcoming weekend. Against Sewanee the offense was a machine accumulating close to 600 yards. Defense was good, bending but never breaking.
Overall yesterday went as expected but the Generals got extra motivation due to the entire Sewanee team walking the field and thru the Generals as they warmed up prior to the game.
Beautiful weekend in Lexington. Now it's time to head West young men.

A lot of the guys got a nice break in the second half. Hopefully we will be rested. We owe CMS one after last year. We need to find some pass defense. We've played bend but don't break for a long time, but there are certain down and distances where I'd like to see our guys play tighter and get off the field occasionally. We've let both JHU and Sewanee pick up third and longs way to often. I mean 3rd and 7+ it feels like opponents make it more than they don't. If we want to win the ODAC, that has got to be tighter. Can't count on the offense scoring 40+ every game.

You should be. It was a big win. We will see how Bridgewater does. TMC had about 120 penalty yards and out gained Bridgewater 2:1 in yards. The important number was on the scoreboard but I'm not convinced this moves Bridgewater to the top of the ODAC contender list. We will see.

Heck of a nice surprise upset. Congratulations Eagles.

Are there no D3s in the state of Florida? Never thought of that before but can't think of one. Any theories on how or why that is in a state that big with so many schools?

You need enough to make a full conference all at once. There aren't that many smaller schools and all the secondary state schools believe in big time football. The state is huge North to South. You just can't have a team midway down the state in a conference with tears in GA or AL, it's just too far.

Jk

Asking for your informed ODAC predictions this week.

Sorry. Been a busy few days.

E&H 35  Brevard 14 -- E&H has something to prove, Brevard isn't very good
Guilford 42 Methodist 14 -- Guilford should be confident, Methodist isn't good
Sewanee 21 W&L 31 -- Sewanee is more lively than they've been, but W&L should win at home comfortably
Bridgewater 7 TMC 48 -- This won't be pretty
HSC 14 CNU 28 -- At CNU and I think they are a better team
RMC 28  Averett 10 -- RMC's defense is going to be stout, not sure how good Averett is
Shenandoah 28 NC Wes 24 -- Toss up. NC Wes got killed last week playing greatness, Shenandoah beat up on a poor team. I have no idea

My junior year at Hendrix was absolutely brutal. Somehow, in the year we won the conference title, we made it through a season of bus trips to:

1. Austin College (5.5 hours one way, 680 mi. total)
2. Centre College (9 hours, 1040 mi.)
3. Berry College (8.5 hours, 1020 mi.)
4. University of Chicago (10 hours, 1290 mi.)
5. Sewanee (7.5 hours, 975 mi.)

Yeah. Those are awful. The SAA is just a massively spread out conference. I wish it wasn't. I'll pretty much never advocate for W&L to leave the ODAC because the travel situation is so good for the student athletes, but mission and values wise I'd much rather they be in the SAA. With the SAA travel though, it makes no sense.

Kind of interesting, Belhaven to Sul Ross State is usually my go to for ridiculous conference trips in DIII, 900 miles and over 13 hours by Google, which in a bus is probably even longer.

But actually Sewanee to Trinity now takes the cake. 1022 miles, just over 15 hours. The difference is I've heard that Belhaven rode the bus last year, whereas I know Sewanee traditionally has flown on that trip.

I'm going to do the math at some point, but I'm curious who actually travels the most for their conference schedule. Sul Ross or Belhaven seem like no brainers, but there are some serious contenders in the SAA now and even the MIAA's new upcoming member might stake a claim. I know one of the women I work with, her son was recruited by Belhaven. He ruled them out for many reasons, but one of them was simply the amount of time on a bus every other week during football season.

Interesting fact, Savannah GA to Huntingdon Beach CA is about 2400 miles. Sewanee and Trinity just about cover half the country.

If I had to play in Trinity's "stadium" I would consider any road game a plus... Except maybe Huntingdon, where the visiting team has to do halftime in the buses or trying to find shade since they don't fit in the non-air conditioned locker room.

As I noted on a different thread, my observation from the W&L/CNU game (2nd half only) was that it was indeed physical. I didn't see anything too dirty, just physical. W&L controlled the MF and CNUs defense was very shakey at best.

Yeah. I didn't see anything dirty, just a lot of consistent fouling. If it had only been one game I wouldn't have remarked on it. But both games had a lot of fouls called on W&L and the vast number of them I saw looked earned. Thanks for the thoughts. I didn't get to see a whole lot of the game so it's nice to have another opinion.

Pretty glad to start 2-0. The next two at home will be a good challenge as well.

I'm not sure if the bagpiper is a student or not, but we had a guy in our class that received a hefty amount of financial aid due to his piping skills. He could lay it down.
We used to have Knoxville Pipes and Drums perform before the Homecoming game and it was a sight to see. Precision does not do it justice.
I haven't been to, or online streamed, commencement in a couple years, but they have performed there are well.

MC used to have a marching band back in the day that would wear kilts.  Now we have a pep band with a bass guitar >:(. For all the emphasis the College places on the arts and a multi-million dollar concert venue (Clayton Center for the Arts), you'd think they'd have the interest/capabilities to have an actual marching band. If you want to see a small college band that does it right, look at Huntingdon. Don't need a big band...maybe 20 people.

Hasanova and I were admiring Huntingdon's band this weekend. Between the pre-game march, the halftime show, and the music throughout the game, they do an excellent job and it is huge. BSC has a small band that also does well. I'm surprised that both still also pipe in cheap music during the game. Let the band have it! It's why they are there.

Carnegie Mellon also has bagpipes. When my sister went, mid to late 90s, I used to enjoy listening to them. A very neat novelty but I'm not sure I'd want to be hearing them on a regular basis.

Good start for the Generals. Topped Greensboro 2-1 despite playing slightly more than a half down a man and then came back the  next day and topped CNU 2-1 on CNU's field. I was concerned they would have heavy legs for the second game given how much time they spent down a man in the first, but they looked good versus CNU for what I was able to watch.

I am a little concerned by the number of fouls W&L committed, something like 38 across the two games. At this level I understand that playing physical is important, but there is a line that leads away from soccer and into something else. I think some of the fouls against CNU were a function of being on the road, but there were still an awful lot.

Two big home tests this week hosting always tough Emory and highly ranked F&M.

The rankings are fun to talk about and I admire Pat and crew for doing them, but it's an impossible task. Stop worrying over them. Those of us that do the SRFP know that even by the end of the year, teams 6-15 or so are pretty much interchangeable, and that's just in the South Region. It's kind of silly to get so upset or put too much trust in the numbers. The information available to make these rankings is way below what you get for DI, there are twice as many teams, and way less crossover given only a 10 game schedule and multiple leagues with only 1 or 2 OOC games. And D1 people who do it for a living still generally suck at it once you get outside the top 10 or 15.

You want to make a monkey of yourself? Join one of the fan polls or just look at your weekly pick'em. Say thanks to the Kickoff guys for doing their best and providing good information and entertainment, but don't get upset about it. All that matters is the games on the field. Win your OOC games you get bragging rights. Win your rivalry games you get super bragging rights. Win the conference and walk around with a smile for the rest of the year. Ranked 125 to start the season? Post your reasons why for a fun conversation and then settle in to watch the games and hope Pat and crew are wrong. They will be, it's inevitable, but you will be too!
