I usually dont log into the boards very often in the off season, but glad I did.
1) The WIAC is competitive because of the people at the schools. Just like Mount, UMHB, Wesley, St. Johns, Rowan, John Carroll, Washington & Jefferson etc... These man and women that run these organizations make it appealing for young athletes to attend. LK, LL, Gagliardi, Berowitz, Keeler, Sirianni, Arth, The late great Mike Drass, THornes' (plural), Coach Fred, and all of the other head coaches, AD's, assistants, former players etc... that make up the whole team. I'm sure tuition could be a deciding factor between 2 or 3 schools. I dont buy it though. How could private schools in super competitive markets (Mount Union, UMHB) possibly compete with any school in the WIAC if tuition was such a major factor. When you develop an atmosphere of winning and make that the expectation it is hard to forget it. I still, 20 plus years later, expect Rowan to have a winning program...every year. The WIAC has done that with all of there programs, and their coaches have instilled that type of culture and the students come there to be a part of it!!! This is not to say that other coaches or programs that dont have success dont bust their humps trying, i'm just saying these select few are EXCEPTIONAL and as such so are the schools that they worked at. Not for nothing, but once upon a time, the OAC (all private schools) was the #1 conference in all the land.
2) Sorry to see Lenny go, I thought he did a great job... Good Luck to him.
3) MUC57 great inspiring a podcast. I enjoyed it!!
4) LK = "The GOAT"
5) Back in the day ('97, '98) Mount opened with Defiance. I do wish that Mount could have a more competitive game, but they do schedule several years in advance. I remember a time (before the purple powers were born) when Mount scheduled a scrappy team from Wisconsin for home and home. If they have made that a 4 game series instead of a 2 game series, they both could started the season the same way as they ended it in the Stagg Bowl.
6) Also, did everyone hear Pat's/Greg's comment about the current slate of D3 coaches? No Head coach in D3 has was the Stagg Bowl... Amazing
Go D3
