Title: WBB: Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Post by: Former Sciac Player on March 11, 2004, 05:44:31 PM
Hey I have lots-o-love for the SCIAC, and respect for Chapman, but in the past years the competition is not at the level it used to be.  They need to bring it back up, recruiting outside of greater LA.  There are a lot of areas to tap for some good players and coaches need to get up and get out there.

I've seen some game highlights here in Texas and I have seen many skilled players that I suspect are overlooked by D3 schools or don't realize that they can play beyond high school.

Way to go Cal Lu Regals!  As looking at last years post, there is quite a difference in this years team.  The SCIAC does look a little down once again this year, but the Regals definintely look much improved.  Represent well in the post season!

I'll echo those props for the Regals, a great run to win SCIAC that will hopefully equate to success in the post season.  Does anyone know who the likely first round opponent is?

It is time to find out who is in... and who is out.
Whose bubble has been burst and who is wearing Cinderella's glass slippers.
It's Selection Sunday... and tonight there will be a special "Hoopsville" as the 2005 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Brackets are announced... LIVE on our air!
The Road to Salem and Virginia Beach officially starts tonight!

It plans to be a huge night... as 50 womens and 48 mens teams are officially invited to the dance and a chance at a national title.

Some teams already know they are going (thanks to winning their conferences) and some think they are going, but there are always surprises.

So tonight, we will break it all down. Starting at 8:30 PM EST, we will take a look at who is definitely in, who might make it, who will be disappointed, and what match-ups you might want to look forward to seeing later in the week.

Then at 10:00 PM EST... we will broadcast LIVE the Women's Selection Show so you can find out when we do... the 50 teams on the Road to Virginia Beach.

That will be followed by the Men's Selection Show at 10:30 PM EST - when 48 teams find out what their Road to Salem will be like.

After those selections... we will go over it with a fine-tooth comb and find out who we think are the surprises!

And throughout the show, we will hear from different regions with live reports and talk to coaches that have made surprising moves into the tournament.

Of course, you can listen in thank to Goucher College.
We suggest you try and use the low-bandwith signal which will require you to have Real Player and selection the 28K version of the show.
At the same time, you can listen to the Broadcastmonsters.com version, using Windows Media Player (go to the "Hoopsville" page for more information).

And you can share your opinions and questions with us, live on the air.
email - hoopsville@d3hoops.com

And for more information... check out the "Hoopsville" website (www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville)!

Again... it all starts tonight at 8:30 PM EST.

I was recently told that the SCIAC signed up with D3Scoreboard.com to run the standings and score reporting for its conference Web site. Under our partnership with D3Scoreboard.com (http://www.d3hoops.com/news.php?item=576), this means that when a SCIAC school reports a score to the conference, it will automatically be posted on D3hoops.com.

We hope this one-stop shopping will enable SCIAC schools to report scores in a timely manner, which I know will be of interest to fans here.

Oxy hoops: Coach Hoffman had a productive recruiting year. Combined with the return of two star veterans, the Tigers will be a team to contend with in SCIAC, as predicted. If the new players mature quickly, watch out for the Eagle Rock denizens.

Chapman fans —
Your team is in the national playoffs after an overtime victory just two days ago, and this is all the posting you can come up with?  Sure, HPU is the odds-on favorite to win Saturday, but I'm still surprised there's not more fan excitement being expressed here.  Isn't anyone from Chapman rooting for an upset??

Everyone has been doubting Chapman all year and they have won 17 games in a row since losing to Puget Sound and they are 23-5!  They are a different team since playing Puget and deserve respect nationally.  They have a very close group that works hard and has a lot of heart and talent for a team who's biggest player is 6'0 and barely plays.  They beat everyone in the SCIAC and came back to win a thriller in the 1st round of the playoffs with Hayman and Belou (their 2 leading scorers) sitting most of the game.  They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  I will be cheering on Chapman and do believe if they come out and play a smart game, limit their TO's, limit second chance opportunities for HPU and their key players (hayman, belou, ly) stay out of foul trouble and stay on the court we will have a hell of a game.  Get that upset Chapman!!!!!!

You have a lot to be proud about Chapman Panthers! You broke the school record for consecutive wins with 17 and went 23-6 this year.  Next year with a healthy Belou and everyone except 1 player returning with the addition of some recruits they will be a very tough team to beat.  Great job this year Girls!

2007-08...keep an eye on the Oxy Tigers. Influx of new energy and talent over past two recruiting seasons will make them a contender this year. If young players develop as anticipated and coaches get the fresh faces to play together, then they'll be a formidable squad. May have the most depth of any SCIAC team.

Congrats Tigers on winning the season opener!  More good stuff to come.

From the Oxy website:

Tigers Open 2007-08 Season with Win

Pasadena, Calif. (November 16, 2007)

Opening night for the Tigers women's basketball team was a successful one as Occidental went on a late run to take a 73-61 victory over San Diego Christian College at the first ever Caltech-Occidental Tip-Off Classic.

Trailing by a point with 7:43 to play the Tigers' newest addition, junior transfer Brianna Brown, put Oxy ahead for good. Occidental wouldn't relinquish the 54-53 lead, going on an 11-2 run in the final three minutes to close out the game.

Senior three-time All-SCIAC player Stacie Roshon led the offensive force posting a game high 21 points. She sank five baskets from behind the arc and added a 2-2 performance at the line. Also scoring in double figures in the season opener were Brown and Laura Mohler with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Roshon, Mohler and freshman Madeline Rose each grabbed five rebounds including three offensive boards apiece for Roshon and Rose. Brown pulled down four rebounds and sophomore Gillian Nugent had three and recorded the only Oxy block of the game.

Brown led all players with three steals while Roshon, Mohler, Rose and Brittinee Yasukochi each finished with a pair. Rose finished her collegiate debut with eight points and sophomore guard Yasukochi tallied seven.

Mohler dished out eight assists in 38 minutes on the court. Yasukochi finished with three assists.

Appearing in black and orange for the first time were junior transfer Asha Jordan and  freshman Stephanie Babij.

Occidental shot 45.6% from the field. The Tigers scored 26 points in the paint and added 20 points off Hawks' turnovers. Oxy showcased its depth, turning to the bench to provide 21 points while the San Diego Christian bench scored none.

Earlier today Caltech defeated Pacific Union 68-37. Lindsay King led the way for the Beavers with a 21-point performance. Sophomore Beaver Lisa Lee turned in a double-double performance, scoring 11 and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Pioneers were led by Nichole Stottlemyer who scored 19 points for Pacific Union.

Tomorrow at 6:05 the Tigers and Pioneers will tip off to conclude the opening weekend of the season. Caltech and San Diego Christian will play at 4:00 p.m. in Braun Gymnasium on the campus of Caltech.

Chapman =  Very, Very Good!  They should have beat Howard Payne last friday (forced 33 to's from the #2 team in the nation) and looking at their schedule, they may be looking at another 17+ game win streak.  If they stay healthy and are able to mesh the new players with the returners this could be one hell of a season for the Lady Panthers!

HPU's Coach K did say that Chapman was much improved over last year.  Chapman double teamed Meia Daniels the whole game which I thought was a big mistake because it left their undersized posts to guard a very good Stacey Blalock one on one who scored 26 pts on them.

You also have to remember location played a big part in both games.  Chapman never plays in front of more than a couple hundred fans and when they came into Brownwood, TX in front of almost 4,500 fans, that had to be a little intimidating.  Then this year playing in California, HPU had to do the traveling and Chapman didn't have as far to go, as well as playing in front of a very small crowd.
Title: Re: S.C.I.A.C. / Chapman
Post by: monmcali on November 21, 2007, 12:46:11 PM
Location/home court advantage surely played a part in the difference in the game but...

the biggest difference seemed to be the fact that Chapman dressed 15 this year vs. dressing nine when they traveled to Texas last year.  the deeper roster allowed Chapman to press and trap everyone from Howard Payne, not just All-American Daniels.  Blalock is a ton.  She single handedly refused to let HPU lose.  When CU had a smaller player on her she scored inside.  when CU put a bigger player on her she started hitting jumpers.  Blalock was the difference, not location (a neutral site), and not the time of year (i believe the first game of the year for both teams).  HPU's free throw shooting was amazing as well they were like 35-39.  Chapman only shot 17.

HPU is a very good team, but i think a month from now people will be saying the same thing about Chapman.
Title: Re: S.C.I.A.C. / Chapman
Post by: dballa on November 21, 2007, 01:13:21 PM
Nobody has said Chapman is a bad team.  After winning 17 in a row and making the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament and then returning a lot of those players, I think a lot of people expect a lot out of Chapman.

I said it last year at the game in Texas and it holds true this year, if they had any kind of post presence inside, they could easily be one of the best teams in the country.

Chapman's guards are really quick and play great defense.  But if you can throw over the top of them before the trap comes and get it to a post player, that pretty much means game over.

Good luck to them the rest of the year and I hope they do well and make the tournament again.

chapman won a hard fought game last nite at Oxy against a very good, scrappy Occidental team.  Mohler (2), Roshon (21) and Babij (35) are very good players and should lead Oxy to the top of the SCIAC.  Point Guard Kamiyama was the difference for the panthers.  she had 33pts. 5ast. and 0 turnovers in a very intense game.  every three **** hit was huge and timely. CU has Cal Lu at home on wednesday before travleing up north to play Santa Cruz and Claremont.

In the Tiger-Poet Classic (and with due respect, 'classic' is liberally defined these days), Whittier fell to Wartburg's second-half rush while the Women of Eagle Rock had an easy time of it with NAIA II Viterbo.
The Tigers will tangle with 6-1 Wartburg tomorrow at 3:00 pm at  venerable Rush Gym.  A good early test for the ascendant Oxy women's hoops program.

Despite losing its post player to season-ending surgery, Oxy ripped the Regals behind torrid shooting and tenacious defense, 69-47, in Eagle Rock on Thursday night.

The Tigers jumped on Cal Lu early, leading by as much as 17 in the first half. The Regals managed to cut that lead to 11 at the half, and they continued to chip away in the second stanza, getting within two. But Oxy hit a couple of key long-range baskets and reaffirmed its defensive stance THye extended thei lead largely without the services of star Brianne Brown, who picked up her fourth foul about midway through the half.

The night belonged to Oxy's lone senior and All-SCIAC veteran Stacie Roshon, who  lit it up for 24 points and snagged 9 rebounds.  Guard Laura Mohler also distinguised herself on both ends of the floor, as did the bench.

The Tigers and LaVerne's Leopards, 65-60 winners over Redlands in the other SCIAC tourney game, will tangle in the Rush Gym on Saturday evening.

Looks like La Verne played well in the championship game against Oxy.  Looking forward to their matchup against UPS on Friday.  UPS has been playing very well as of late too...should be a great game!

Thanks for the k.

George Fox has an outstanding Freshman G. Keisha Gordon (21.3 ppg) who the Panthers will have to stop in order to have any chance to steal this one.  Other players the Panthers have to defend against are G. Sage Indendi (13.0 ppg) and F. Elise Kuenzi (11.3 ppg).  Plus GF is now ranked #25 in the DIII Hoops poll this week which is an added incentive to maintain their ranking.  Last, but certainly not least, the Panthers will be in the Bruins' backyard.  So from my view, George Fox is the favorite in this game.

Re: Howard Paine, we hope so as well, but they're a big hill to climb, they draw 4,000+ partisan and boisterious fans for playoff home games.  They're a very disciplined squad with a knowledgeable and skilled coach.  Besides we have far to go and most of it is on the road.  It would be a major accomplishment to make it that far, let alone overcome the Lady Jackets.

GFU vs. Chapman will be an excellent matchup to keep your eyes on.  Gordon and the rest of the Bruins Freshmen are the real deal, and basically all the returnees from Chapman are coming to Oregon ready to get revenge for their first round loss to them in the Tournament last spring.  It should be a relatively even matchup that's going to come down to defense

Oxy (3-2) beat the College of St. Elizabeth (7-5), 61-41, in the first round of the Tiger-Poet Classic at Oxy. For Oxy, Stephanie Babij had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Gillian Nugent and Dior Williams each scored 10. I only wish I'd been there to hear the Oxy PA announcer deal with the St. Elizabeth roster, which includes Geanna Bonavitacola, Sarah Kozlowski, Melinda Levendusky, Anastasia Feola, Sabrina Jarmolinski, head coach Tony Bonavitacola, and assistant coach Nina Oshiokpekhai.

In the other first round game, Whittier (2-4) beat Pacific (3-3), 65-56. For the Poets, Morgan Sabala had 13 points on 13-for-14 from the foul line, Kourtney Zilbert had 13, and Tina Merlino scored 10.

The tournament wraps up tonight at Oxy. Whittier faces St. Elizabeth at 5:00 p.m., and Oxy plays Pacific at 7:00 p.m.

SCIAC women's basketball item from the San Bernardino Sun (http://www.sbsun.com/sports/ci_11713493):

Quote
TRIO IN SCIAC TITLE CHASE

The SCIAC battle is coming down to the wire with three teams fighting for first on the women's side and a definite possibility of a three-way tie.

Defending champion Occidental (18-5, 10-2) is up by one game over the University of La Verne (17-5, 9-3) and the University of Redlands (17-6, 9-3).

The schedule favors the Bulldogs who have games left with Cal Lutheran (7-16, 5-7) and Caltech (3-20, 0-12). The Leopards and Tigers also have a head-to-head battle with Oxy also having Caltech and La Verne also facing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Occidental appears to have the advantage in the head-to-head battle because it has won nine of its past 10 and La Verne has been beset by injuries to starters Trenecca Jones (concussion), Mayra Duenas (broken foot) and Tedra Clark (ankle).

Redlands picked up some steam with a win Saturday over La Verne but its leading scorer Courtney Carroll went down with a sprained ankle.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 57, La Verne 54

Congratulations to Oxy! The Tigers beat La Verne and won their second consecutive SCIAC championship.

The game was a tight battle throughout the first half with 7 lead changes and 4 ties. Emily Carrillo's 3-point play gave the Leopards a 26-24 halftime lead. In the second half, the game was tied 45-45 with 8 minutes left when Oxy went on an 11-0 run and took a 56-45 lead at 3:30, but La Verne wasn't about to give up without a fight. The Leopards scored 9 straight, and Trenneca Jones' 3-ball cut Oxy's lead to 56-54 with 50 seconds to go. Asha Jordan missed a jumper for Oxy, and La Verne had the ball out of bounds with 8 seconds left and a chance to tie or win it. Carrillo got off a good shot but missed, and she had to foul Brianne Brown, who hit one of two FTs with a second left for the final margin of victory.

For Oxy, Brianne Brown scored 19 and had 6 rebounds, and Stephanie Babij had 13 and 6 rebounds. For La Verne, Trenneca Jones led all scorers with 22, Emily Carrillo scored 11 and had 10 rebounds, and Ashley Paul tossed in 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

With the win, Oxy (20-5, 12-2) is the No. 1 seed in the SCIAC tournament, and will host No. 4 Whittier (16-9, 8-6) on Thursday, while La Verne (18-6, 10-4) drops to No. 3 and will play at No. 2 Redlands (19-6, 11-3). The winners of those games will play on Saturday at the highest remaining seed, with the victor getting the SCIAC AQ to the NCAA tournament.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 79, Whittier 51

Props indeed to Gillian Nugent, who scored 16 second half points, including 4 straight 3-pointers, to lead No. 1 seed Oxy to a 79-51 win over No. 4 Whittier in the semifinals of the SCIAC tournament. On Saturday Oxy will host No. 3 La Verne, which beat No. 2 Redlands 50-48 in the other semifinal, for the SCIAC championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

In the first half, Nugent's 3-ball gave Oxy a 19-4 lead at 10:40, but WC's Ashley Vierra hit a 3-pointer at 6:30 and the Poets only trailed 25-17. That's when the Tigers went to work. A 3-pointer by Dior Williams followed by a steal and a layup by Brianne Brown put Oxy up 30-17. Brown hit another jumper and then made a basket and one and it was 35-17. Britinee Yasucochi's FT completed an 11-0 run, and the Tigers took a 36-19 lead at the half. Oxy's defense smothered Whittier and harassed the Poets into 20 turnovers in the first half.

In the second half, Oxy led 45-29 with a bit under 14 minutes left. It was 51-33 with under 8 minutes to go when Nugent put on a clinic and made 4 consecutive 3s in 2:20, and the Tigers led it by 26, 63-37. The Oxy reserves came in and finished up nicely. A dominating performance at both ends for Oxy. The Tigers have won 8 straight and 13 of their last 14.

For Oxy, Gillian Nugent led all scorers with 19 on 6-for-10 and 5-for-8 3s. Brianne Brown scored 15 and had 5 rebounds, Dior Williams had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals, and Stephanie Babij scored 14. For Whittier, Kourtney Zilbert played an outstanding game with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block, Ashley Vierra had 12, and Tina Merlino had 8 points and 5 assists.

Saturday's SCIAC championship game, tipoff at 5:00 p.m.:

La Verne (19-6) @ Oxy (21-5)

The teams split their two regular season meetings.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

SCIAC Tournament Final

Oxy 51, La Verne 37

Oxy: Stephanie Babij 16 pts and 9 rebs, Dior Williams 13 pts, 4 rebs, and 5 steals
ULV: Emily Carrillo 10 pts and 11 rebs, Clarissa Holz 10 pts and 7 rebs
Halftime: Oxy 21-14
Rebounds: Oxy 43-37

The game started slowly; Oxy was up only 9-6 at 12:00. After Clarissa Holz's jumper brought La Verne to 17-14, Dior Williams' jumper and a layup by Stephanie Babij gave the Tigers a 7-point halftime lead, 21-14. Neither team shot well in the first half. Oxy was 10-for-30 (33.3%) and was only 1-for-9 shooting 3s, and ULV only shot 27% on 7-for-26 and was 0-for-6 shooting 3s. Neither team shot a FT in the first half.

In the second half, Oxy led 28-20 at 16:15, but 3 straight layups by Madeline Rose, Brianne Brown and Stephanie Babij gave Oxy a 14-point lead at 34-20, and the Leopards got no closer than 8 the rest of the way. La Verne had a tough time keeping Babij from getting free underneath, and Dior Williams scrapped and clawed under the basket and played her usual tough in-your-face defense.

La Verne ends its season 19-8, while Oxy, now 22-5, gets the SCIAC AQ and a trip to the NCAA playoffs.

Congratulations to the Oxy Tigers, the 2008-2009 SCIAC champs!

Eyewitness report from Orange:

Chapman 70, Oxy 65 OT

CU: Lauren Kamiyama 24, Linda Ly 13, Hayley MacArthur 8 pts and 8 rebs, Andrijana Kerkez 6 pts and 8 rebs
Oxy: Brianne Brown 21 pts and 7 rebs, Stephanie Babij 13 pts and 12 rebs, Dior Williams 12, Asha Jordan 5 pts and 10 rebs
Halftime: CU 35-29
Regulation: 61-61
Rebounds: Oxy 45-41

Great game between Oxy and Chapman in Oxy's first-ever NCAA playoff appearance.

In the first half, Chapman led 28-20. Oxy closed to 30-29 before the Panthers scored the last 5 points of the half and led 35-29 at the break. In the second half, Chapman was up 6 with about 4:30 to go, but the Tigers tied it back up at 61 with a little over a minute left. Oxy had a couple of good chances to take the lead but couldn't convert, and Dior Williams made a game-saving steal. The Tigers had it with 7 seconds to go, but Brianne Brown's would-be game-winning shot at the buzzer was just a smidgen late, and the game went to OT. Brown's 3-ball gave Oxy the lead 64-62. Linda Ly scored to give Chapman the lead 66-65. Lauren Kamiyama then made the play of the night for the Panthers as she dribbled from the left under the basket, circled back beyond the arc, and canned a 22-footer which put CU up 69-65 and the game out of reach for Oxy. A disappointing loss for the Tigers, who finish 22-6, and a great win for the Panthers, who are now 20-8 and travel to play on Saturday against 27-0 George Fox.

For Oxy, senior Brianne Brown finished her career 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Stephanie Babij had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Dior Williams scored 12. Senior Asha Jordan finished her Oxy career with 5 points and 10 rebounds. Congratulations to the Tigers for a great season, and thank you, Brianne and Asha! You will be dearly missed!

What an impressive showing by the group from Occidental. The radio crew, drummers, mascot cheerleaders, students and parents. A very big following. All represented your cause to the highest degree. Congrads on the excellent season! Was also nice putting a face to the names...OXY BOB and D.O.C. See you next season.

QuoteGEORGE FOX AWAITS AFTER PANTHERS ADVANCE IN OVERTIME THRILLER

ORANGE, Calif. – Back-to-back baskets by Linda Ly and Lauren Kamiyama in overtime gave the Chapman University women’s basketball team the lead for good as it held on to defeat Occidental College 70-65 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

Chapman advances to face a familiar foe, George Fox University (Ore.) in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday. The Panthers will travel to Newberg, Ore., where they were eliminated from the NCAA tournament in 2008. Chapman and George Fox (27-0) also squared off in a December rematch with the Bruins winning 82-52 en route to an undefeated regular season and No. 3 national ranking.

In defeating Occidental on Wednesday night, the Panthers improve to 6-0 in first round games against SCIAC champions. Occidental (22-6) trailed Chapman for much of the game but captured the lead 64-62 on a three-pointer by senior G Brianne Brown a few seconds into the overtime period. With the Tigers leading by one, Ly scored two of her 13 points with 1:24 remaining to give the Panthers a 66-65 lead. Kamiyama then followed with a deep three-pointer putting the game out of reach.

The Panthers had led by as many as eight points early in the second half, but Oxy kept it close the rest of the way, eventually tying the game with 1:13 left in regulation. Chapman (20-8) was held to just one field goal over the final 5:48 in the second half as the Tigers chipped away.

Kamiyama scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the second half and overtime, including four three-pointers.

For Occidental, Brown finished with 21 points and added seven rebounds. Stephanie Babij earned a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Congrats to the ladies!!

Tiger Alums to Play Hoops Overseas

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2009) – Two years after graduating from Occidental College with the career point record, Stacie Roshon has signed with the Velbert Baskets located in Velbert, Germany.

Roshon is the second Tiger to sign a contract to play professionally in Germany, following Song Kun '03 who inked his name to play with the Herzöge Wolfenbüttel, replacing another Tiger graduate, Connor Whitman '08, in June. Whitman, who had a terrific first season will likely sign another pro contract for the upcoming season as well.

While both Kun and Whitman have played overseas before, Roshon will get her first taste of international competition. Not only will she be playing at a high level, she will get a first hand experience of living in Germany with a host family. Additionally Roshon will have an opportunity to travel Europe while playing the sport she loves.

In what is a huge move for the 2007 graduate of Occidental College, Roshon is ecstatic about the opportunity to play abroad.

"Being able to continue by basketball career is a dream come true, but would not have been possible without the skills and knowledge I acquired at Occidental."

Roshon leaves in September and will return to the states in late May while Kun prepares for his second stint playing in Germany, where his professional career began in 2003. Since that time he has played basketball inTaiwan, Japan and  Hong Kong.

Champion Tigers return to the hardwood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 12, 2009) – Coming off their first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament in program history and their second consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the newest version of the Tigers look to continue their winning ways in the 2009-10 season.

Occidental opens its 2009-10 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 15 when they host the La Sierra University Golden Eagles in the first of three Sunday afternoon non-conference games. After traveling to Santa Barbara to take on Westmont College, the Tigers will return home to face off with the Chapman University Panthers, the team that knocked them out of the "Big Dance" last season in a heartbreaking overtime loss. Other big regional match-ups include games against Willamette University (OR) and Lewis & Clark (OR) in the Tiger-Poet Classic, and UC Santa Cruz in another Sunday afternoon home game.

Once 2010 rolls around, the defending league champs will turn their focus to competing for a third conference title, but  competition in the SCIAC will be tough as the University of Redlands, University of La Verne, Whittier College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Cal Lutheran University have all improved, meaning the defending champions will have to navigate through one of the most competitive SCIAC fields in recent history in order to bring home another title.

Even with loss of the highly decorated Brianne Brown (D3Hoops.com All American, All West Region 2nd Team and two-time SCIAC Player of the Year) and the versatile Asha Jordan, the Black and Orange will have plenty of firepower returning as the Tigers roster includes 10 returning letter winners, which feature All-SCIAC performers Dior Williams and Stephanie Babij. Williams scored 11 points per game, shooting 44.7% from the field with 3.5 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game, but she most stood out for her 105 total steals (3.8 per game). Babij led all Tigers with 7.8 rebounds per game while chipping in 10.7 points per game with a 53.9 field goal percentage as she was a presence in the paint all season.

The Tigers will also look to senior captain and point guard Britinee Yasukochi to provide big game experience and daily leadership. Last season, Yasukochi dished out 3.3 assists per game. Returning to the court for the Tigers are the senior trio of Gillian Nugent (7.5 ppg, 39.6 3FG%, 2.0 apg), Brittany Mally (38.3 3FG%a) nd Natalie Kolodinski who spent last semester studying abroad. After being sidelined by an injury in 08-09, Samantha Rossi will play a key role for the Tigers as will Laura Mohler who rejoins the squad after a year hiatus. Gabby Hirsch-Gonzalez and  Kiana Dobson each has a year of collegiate basketball experience under her belt entering the winter.

"We are excited about the season ahead. We have a great mix of experienced players to provide leadership and young players to provide energy. We have a very challenging pre-season schedule that we hope will prepare us for very competitive SCIAC play" noted Head Coach Heidi VanDerveer.

Getting their first taste of collegiate basketball this winter will be Elizabeth Little, Makenize Brandon, Stephanie Scamman, Marquisha Corley, Maayan Gordon, and Katelyn Rowe who add more west coast depth to an already deep roster.

Overall Oxy will play an 11 game non-conference schedule before opening SCIAC play. The league home opener will take place on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Rush Gymnasium against Whittier College at 5:00 p.m., as the Tigers look to compete for another conference title, and a spot in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Oxy 79 Chapman 69

Oxy got a measure of revenge against Chapman, which knocked the Tigers out of the playoffs in the first round last season. The game was tied at 2 at 18:30, but then Oxy got the lead and never relinquished it. The Tigers led 38-24 at halftime. In the second half the Panthers closed to 4 but couldn't get over. For Oxy, Laura Mohler had 19, Gillian Nugent had 13, Britinee Yasukochi had 11, and Dior Williams scored 10. For Chapman, Linda Ly had 18, Simone Ibbotson had 14 and 12 rebounds, Casey Gomez had 12, and Tara Glennon scored 10.

Oxy is 2-1 and is home to Fontbonne on Nov. 28. Chapman is 0-3 and plays vs. George Fox @ Cal Lutheran on Nov. 27.

Oxy 95 Fontbonne 74

Oxy dominated Fontbonne, winning easily 95-74. The game was tied at 16 at 10:45, but Samantha Rossi's 3-ball gave Oxy the lead for good. The Tigers led 50-38 at the half, and by as many as 24 in the second half. Oxy spread the love around -- Samantha Rossi scored 17, Makenzie Brandon had 15, Stephanie Babij scored 13, Britinee Yasukochi and Dior Williams each had 10, and Laura Mohler had 9. For the Griffins, Kailin Bramel had 15, Calista Collier had 14, and Shaerika April scored 11.

It will be interesting to see what seasoned observers have to say about S.C.I.A.C. play in 2009-2010. Oxy returns a strong core, but may find making it three conference championships in a row to be a bit of a chore. I would have bet on U of Redlands before the season started. However, with what must be eight to ten new players in the fold, Cal Lutheran has been enjoying some real success against some nationally ranked teams. Whittier should be good, too. In fact, generally speaking, the entire conference shows improved play.

It looked like that game would be between teams tied for first place but Cal Lutheran was beaten on Saturday by defending champion Occidental, which doesn't appear ready to surrender the title.

Both teams have another game earlier in the week, though. Redlands will host Whittier and Cal Lutheran is home to Pomona-Pitzer. Both games are on Thursday.

In D3 (women's) basketball, I assume it's the official scorekeeper who is responsible for keeping track of and reporting all stats to the conference -- including making the call, for example, whether a pass constitutes an assist or whether a rebound is made by an individual or the team. Out of curiosity, I'd be interested to know if official scorekeepers are assigned to games by the conference or by the home team. Might anyone know?

ULV: Ashley Paul 19, Amanda Copas 14, Clarissa Holz 14 pts, 10 rebs, 40 min

According to the NCAA, the official duties of the scorer are to keep track of the names and uniform numbers of the players, record field goals made and free throws made and missed, keep a running summary of points scored, record personal and technical fouls called on players and coaches, notify the refs when a player has received her 5th personal foul and when the 7th and 10th team fouls have been committed, and record the number of timeouts and notify the refs when a team has taken its last TO.

Oxy 64, Redlands 63

In the second half Oxy led 52-41 at 12:55, but Redlands tied the game 62-all on Courtney Carroll's jumper with 1:37 to go, and took the lead 63-62 on a FT by Mariah Barbetti-Cort with 46 seconds left. After a missed shot by Oxy, Carroll was fouled with 10 seconds left but missed both FTs. Oxy called timeout with 3 seconds left. The ball went in to Stephanie Babij, who was fouled with 1.4 seconds to go. Babij hit both FTs, and UR's desperation heave was no good.

For Oxy, Stephanie Babij scored 30 (12-for-15 FGs) and had 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Makenzie Brandon had 11, and Dior Williams scored 7 and had 10 rebounds.

For Redlands, Courtney Carroll had 24 pts and 8 rebs, and Meghan Yetman scored 14.

With the win Oxy is 14-4, 6-1 SCIAC, and tied for first with Cal Lutheran (13-4, 6-1). Redlands is 13-5, 5-2. Saturday night Oxy is home to Pomona (5-11, 1-6), while Redlands hosts La Verne (9-9, 2-5).

The Caltech women's team doesn't get much notice, but on Jan. 23 the Techers got their first-ever SCIAC road win, a 76-61 win over Pomona:

QuoteIt was a big night for the Beavers as they did what no other Caltech women's basketball team have accomplished...a SCIAC win on the road. And big it was. In a 15-point margin, Caltech dealt Pomona Pitzer a loss and for the second time made the Sagehens the subject of a Tech first. Back in January of 2007 Caltech got its first SCIAC win on their home court against the Sagehens.

Tonight's schedule, all games 5:00 p.m.:

La Verne (9-9, 2-5 SCIAC) @ Redlands (13-5, 5-2)
Cal Lutheran (13-4, 6-1) @ Claremont (12-6, 3-4)
Caltech (5-13, 1-6) @ Whittier (11-7, 4-3)
Pomona (5-11, 1-6) @ Oxy (14-4, 6-1)

No class, disrespectful remark by George Fox head coach Scott Rueck about Cal Lutheran in the D3hoops "Around the Nation" column:

QuoteScott Rueck has something of a basketball dynasty brewing in Newberg, Ore. A year ago, his George Fox women were on top of the world, making the trip to Holland and winning the program's first national championship; now, he's lost arguably his two best players from last spring's title-winner, and he's still got his Bruins right there among the nation's elite.
...

"We felt that way to start the year, kind of," Rueck admitted. "I don't know -- it was an interesting start to our season. We weren't playing great at first, and we had some players playing, I believe, below their potential. But once Christmas hit, we had had the loss to Cal Lutheran, which I thought wasn't a very good loss, and then another [to Division II Lewis-Clark State] against what I thought was a very good team -- and those were losses that refocused us, I thought.

Sore loser.

Oxy 60, Cal Lutheran 55

Oxy took over sole possession of first place with a 60-55 win over Cal Lutheran. The game was close throughout. In the first half, Oxy led 23-15 at 9:25, but CLU came back and led 29-28. Makenzie Brandon's layup gave Oxy a 30-29 halftime lead. In the second half, the game was tied 51-all at 2:55. The Tigers then scored 7 straight on Dior Williams's 3-ball and 4 straight FTs by Williams and Britinee Yasukochi, and led 58-51 with 23 seconds left. After CLU's Meaghan Goodenough made a layup, the Regals got a steal and Donielle Griggs hit a jumper to cut the lead to 58-55 with 13 seconds to go. Yasukochi hit 2 more FTs to seal the Oxy victory.

For Oxy, Makenzie Brandon had 16, Dior Williams scored 12, and Gillian Nugent had 11. CLU held Stephanie Babij to 4 points, far under her season average of 14.3.

For Cal Lutheran, Brianna Parker scored 14, Erica Whitley had 11, and Starla Wright scored 12.

Oxy is now 18-4 overall, 10-1 SCIAC, and has won 10 straight. The Tigers play @ Caltech (5-17, 1-10) on Saturday. Cal Lutheran is 17-5, 9-2 and fell into a second place tie with Redlands, also 17-5, 9-2. On Thursday CLU is @ Pomona (5-15, 1-10), while Redlands is home to 4th place Whittier (13-9, 6-5).

I'm surprised you haven't posted an account yet of Occidental's win over Cal Lutheran. Are you working on it?

Hey, I stand corrected as you just posted the report. I knew we wouldn't have to wait too much longer.

OxyBob,

While I'm primarily a Claremont booster, I love Oxy's heart. I was hoping the Athenas could take a game or two from the Tigers this year but, alas, it wasn't meant to be.

With the regular season heading into its final weeks, I know Occidental's upperclassmen have been logging some monster minutes. How's the team's mindset with the conference playoffs in sight?

In closing, great post about Caltech. Those ladies COMPETE every time they take the floor.

2/20 Redlands at Occidental
        Cal Lutheran at Whittier

Occidental, Cal Lutheran, and Redlands have earned playoff spots and are jockeying for position. Whittier is in the driver's seat for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Tonight's regular conference season game schedule, all games 5:00 p.m.:

Pomona (5-17, 1-12) @ Claremont (15-9, 6-7)
Cal Lutheran (18-6, 10-3) @ Whittier (13-11, 6-7)
Redlands (19-5, 11-2) @ Oxy (20-4, 12-1)
Caltech (6-18, 2-11) @ La Verne (11-13, 4-9)

Oxy has clinched the No. 1 seed in the 4-team SCIAC tournament and will play either Claremont or Whittier in the semifinals. Oxy women continue the fight . . . from the Oxy website, GO TIGERS:

Tigers shut down CMS

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Led by Katelyn Rowe's double-double and a stellar defensive effort the Black and Orange rolled to a 20 point victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in tonight's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

The Tigers smothering defense allowed only five baskets in the first half.  Holding CMS to just 12.1% (4-33) from the field while surrendering only 15 first half points en route to a 17 point lead at intermission.

Oxy was again efficient on the offensive end (handing out 17 dimes on 24 baskets), jumping out to a seven point lead over the first six minutes of the ball game before the Athenas scored their first basket.  CMS did make it interesting early, as they were able to cut the lead to four (13-9), but the Tigers responded with a 19-6 run to end the half.  Oxy led from start to finish tonight, while the Athenas never found there rhythm on the offensive end.  Improving in the second half slightly (28%) from the field but it wasn't nearly enough to turn the tide on this night.

The Black and Orange's 67-47 victory was fueled by the dominating interior play of Rowe (14 points and, a game high, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots) and Makenzie Brandon (19 points, a game high five assists and nine boards).  The Tigers dominated the glass, out rebounding CMS 52-33.

Laura Mohler chipped in with 10 points, one of 11 Tigers who scored at least one point tonight, as all 15 members of the squad saw action.

Frannie Hemmelgarn led CMS (15-5, 5-4) with 11 points while still recovering from a knee injury she suffered during a clash with the Whittier Poets.  Her squad is now tied for fourth with Cal Lutheran and Whittier for the final SCIAC playoff spot.

The Tigers (12-8, 7-2) kept pace with the University of Redlands (13-7, 7-2) who also won tonight, 68-31 over Caltech.  Both squads still sit atop the conference with identical 7-2 records, with the University of La Verne in third place at 6-3.

Oxy will travel this coming Thursday, February 10th, to face those third place Leopards with tip off scheduled for 7:30pm.

I watched Oxy's "YOUNG" Lady Tiger team control Chapman in Orange earlier this season. They are a very well coached team and did not succumb to Chapman's full court, high pressure defense. They are a young team that is blossoming quickly. If not this year, they will definitely be a team to reckon with in the future. I wish them the best of luck, and am following them closely now.

Oxy won the regular season SCIAC title. The No. 1-seeded Tigers (17-8, 12-2 SCIAC) will host No. 4 seed La Verne (12-13, 9-5) in one semifinal of the SCIAC tournament. In the other game, No. 2 seed Redlands (16-9, 10-4) will host No. 3 seed Claremont (19-6, 9-5). The winners play Saturday for the conference AQ; highest remaining seed will host the final.

The schedule on the SCIAC web site says that the semifinal games begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. How they expect fans to get to a game at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday evening is anyone's guess.

First Round Predictions
-Oxy at NWC Winner
-Chapman against NWC Pool C bid @ NWC Winner

Second Round
-NWC #1 hosts NWC #2

Reasoning for predictions are simple...
-GFU and L&C are regionally ranked ahead of Chapman. Oxy isn't ranked.
-Both remaining NWC schools will get in, regardless of championship outcome.
-Chapman played two games against teams with poor records in the D3-I tournament, whereas GFU and L&C have played solid teams in the NWC tournament (L&C beat Whitman, and Fox beat UPS which was regionally ranked for two weeks - once ranked...). As a result, both NWC SOS go up, Chapman's goes down.

Chapman will move to #2 or #3, but will not impact who they play. Chapman and Oxy both play a fast paced game, but will be hard pressed to win against the bigger, more physical NW teams. But....I can hope and pray, can't I?

Congrats to the Occidental Tigers on winning the S.C.I.A.C. tournament final, and to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripts Athenas for giving them all they could handle. Great game.

S.C.I.A.C. will be losing a number of fine student-athletes to graduation, but every team in the league seems to have a lot of youth and some veteran leadership coming back. Next year should be very competitive and another exciting season for the fans.

Thanks, ladies.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 55, Claremont 49

Oxy never trailed in the game. Both teams played tight and very deliberate in the first half. the Tigers led 22-12 at the half. In the second half Oxy led 39-26 at 10:00. Claremont tried to chip away, but Oxy thwarted the Athenas every time.

For Oxy, Makenzie Brandon led the way with 22 pts and 7 rebs, and Laura Mohler scored 10. For Claremont, Frannie Hemmelgarn played a fantastic game with 19 pts and 14 rebs, Aria Krumwiede and Madeline Barnes each scored 10.

Good luck to the Tigers in the NCAA playoffs.

I don't think GF and LC would mind a trip to California!  Just kidding, I would expect Chapman and Occidental to go North.  Nothing against Chapman and Occidental, but I would imagine it to be a NW dual for a trip to the sweet 16.  But, it is almost March, so anything could happen!

NOT ONE, BUT TWO CINDERELLA'S GO DOWN TO DEFEAT !!!
IF ONLY IT WERE A GAME OF HORSESHOES, BOTH COULD HAVE HAD SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT !!!

Georoge Fox and LA College came into Chapman's Hutton Gym tonight as would be heavy favorites of Southern California rivals Occidental College and Chapman University. But both teams walked away with close wiins that were not decided until the end.

In addition to playing to keep alive in the D3 NCAA National Tourney, both teams were playing for some respect representing the SCIAC Conference (Oxy) and Independent Chapman .

The Oxy game was close until the end, with George Fox leading most of the time, but Oxy kept it close by stopping George Fox's scoring runs with a run of their own. I said it earlier iin the season after Oxy beat Chapman at their own game on Chapman's own court,
I observed that this was going to be a team to be reckoned with, I just didn't think that it would be this year. But, Oxy earned a ton of respect tonight by keeping with GF, stride for stride. GF is a very good team, and tonight beat another very good team that would not be intimidated.

Oxy had a good following and their noise was a factor, fueled by their awesome three piece drum pep band and the ever boisterous football team guys.

Congradulations to Oxy on a great season. You "dun" good and should be proud of your accomplishments.

The LA College/Chapman game saw the lead change several times throughout. Chapman's intense defense, and strong board play kept an outstanding LAC team off guard. The size advantage was definitly LAC's.

With LAC trailing Chapman by one point, and Chapman at the line with 5 seconds to go, Chapman missed the front end of a one and one. The ball bounced off and LAC had the rebound in the corner. At 3 seconds, LAC was trapped, but Chapman fouled and LAC sank both pressure filled free throws to win the game, as Chapman's last second heave was way off target. What a heartbreak for the scrappy Panthers.

Chapman also had a strong following the the stands.

George Fox and LAC meet Saturday night to see who advances to the sweet 16. The game will be video stream fed by George Fox. Check the D3 scores area for links for tomorrow's game and box scores from tonight. See  chapmanathletics.com   for a game write-up for the Chapman/LAC game.

It may not be horseshoes, where close scores, but both teams won respect tonight.

I am totally heartbroken for both teams.

LaCollege faces full court pressure at various times in the season in the ASC.

McMurry was able to beat LaCollege with full court pressure at home this season.  In fact the Chapman game reminded me a lot of the McMurry win.

The block of Givens' shot in the last minute was beautiful.  The in-bounds error was something, but the blocking foul was just as improbable.

I look forward to the GFU-LC game.  Californians may remember the late Louisiana College head coach Janice Joseph-Richards, also former Fresno State coach, who died of Breast CA earlier in the year.

The Lady Wildcats have done Coach Joseph-Richard proud.

Ralph:

We had a slight power failure in the press, audio and video area of the gym. I hope you did not miss much action. I was at the Chapman end of the court along the baseline
looking down the court when Brandi Hood blocked that shot at the end of the game. If she had not have blocked it, a charging foul could have been called. On the foul with 3 seconds to go, I was standing only a few feet away amd knew then that Chapman was goiing to win, only to have my heart stop beating when we fouled...probably the most difficult loss I have ever witnessed. I was so disappointed for our girls. They played their
hearts out...only to come away with a loss.

On the positive side (I like making lemonaide from lemons), our girls will come back stronger next year. Our coach knows how to use the talents she has to get the most of it.
I often ask her how she gets so much juice from a turnip. You guessed her secret, she presses and runs the whole game. That makes up for the lack of size. FYI, you may have noticed that our center was subbed for quite a bit. She has been playing all year on a weak leg. But she always gives 100%. I know most of the girls, and they are good students, fine athletes and all are the kind of people that parents would like to have their sons bring home.

QUASI - resembling; seeming; virtual. Having some resemblance usually by possession of certain attributes :o :o :o

NEWSFLASH......

Chapman transitioned from an independent athletic program to becoming the ninth member of the SCIAC in joining last year.

As a new member of the SCIAC, Chapman is now able to send a representative to vote on NCAA legislation on the conference's behalf,
Brett Halvaks, assistant coach for the cross country and track and field teams, will travel to the NCAA convention in Texas next month to vote on legislation that will affect Chapman and the rest of the Division III athletics.

Halvaks, who has been the Northwest SCIAC representative for three years, traveled to Indianapolis in November with the rest of the 22 national Division III Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representatives to discuss the legislation that they will vote on in Texas when they convene with the rest of SAAC representatives within NCAA.

"We just want to help each other's schools get better," Halvaks said. "Off the playing surface, we all have the same goals. I think we're all trying to make a close-knit community within the student-athletes."

Halvaks takes all the votes on the pieces of legislation from the nine schools in SCIAC and compiles them to decide how he will vote as representative. There are 13 pieces of legislation this year, such as deciding whether student-athletes should have mandatory sickle cell testing.

Cal Lu wrapped up the conference title on Saturday via its win at ULV on Saturday and will host either Oxy, if it wins
against Whittier  and ULV loses to PP. Cal Lu will host ULV if it wins against PP and Oxy
loses to Whittier OR if both teams win or lose.

Chapman will host Redlands in the other game.

Tie breakers galore this season.

Wrong.

Oxy beat Whittier 76-62, led by Makenzie Brandon, who scored 38 points, her 4th 30+ point performance of the season. La Verne destroyed Pomona 111-69; 6 players scored double figures for the Leopards.

Both teams are 11-5 in SCIAC play. They split their two head-to-head games. They have identical records against every other conference opponent. To break the tie SCIAC commissioner Lorin Huffman will flip a coin Tuesday morning. The coin toss winner will be the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will play at No. 1 seed Cal Lutheran on Thursday.

If the conference would schedule its regular-season finale for Saturday, like most conferences do, then it would have time to let the players settle this tie on the floor rather than at the toss of a coin.

Eyewitness report from Thousand Oaks:

Cal Lutheran 69, Oxy 67 OT

Great game between CLU and Oxy. Large noisy contingent from Oxy complete with the Oxy Drumline in attendance.

Very close game throughout. Starla Wright's layup atthe buzzer gave CLU a 30-27 halftime lead. In the second half, the Regals' biggest lead was 8 at 46-38 with 13 minutes left. The Tigers chipped away and tied the game 60-60 on Marquisha Corley's layup with 14 seconds left. CLU couldn't knock down a winner, so the game went to OT. Keely Anderson made 1 of 2 FTs to give CLU a 69-67 lead with 12 seconds to go. Oxy's Liz Little tried for a game-winning 3, but CLU's Alex Nelson got her hand on it, and CLU got the win.

CLU: Starla Wright 20 pts and 13 rebs, Channing Fleischmann 17 pts and 13 rebs, Keely Anderson 11.
Oxy: Makenzie Brandon 20 pts, 12 rebs, 5 assists, 3 steals, Elizabeth Messick 15 pts and 7 blocks.

Oxy finishes the season 16-10. CLU improves to 22-4.

Farewell to Oxy seniors Makenzie Brandon, Liz Little, Stephanie Scamman, Marquisha Corley, and Katelyn Rowe. You will be dearly missed!

Whitman 61, Cal Lutheran 37

Game played at Lewis & Clark. Cal Lutheran was quickly bounced from the playoffs in Round 1. The Regals shot 17.4% in the first half on 4-for-23, trailed by 15 at halftime, and never got back into the game. One and done for the SCIAC again. Whitman moves on to play L&C for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.

In other news, the SCIAC announced the all-conference awards:

QuoteThe SCIAC is proud to annouce the Women's Basketball All-Conference Awards.

Athlete of the Year – Makenzie Brandon, Jr., Occidental College

Brandon won the award for the second straight year.

At least they spelled her name right. They couldn't get Josiah Brensdal's spelled correctly. One thing wrong, however, Brandon is a senior, not a junior.

The all-conference teams:

Quote
First Team:
Starla Wright, Sr., California Lutheran University
Kimi Takaoka, Jr., Chapman University
Erica Whitley, Sr., California Lutheran University
Marika Stanton, Jr., University of Redlands
Megan Musashi, Jr., University of La Verne

Second Team:

Maddie Barnes, Jr., Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Brittany Oster, Jr., University of Redlands
Channing Fleischmann, Sr., California Lutheran University
Stephanie Wong, Fr., Caltech

Chapman had a tough scrimmage against Hope International the other night.  McCoy and Yoshimura experience will be missed at the outset but they return a solid nucleus led by Kimi Takaoka 1st team All-SCIAC.  Andrea Villanueva moves to point guard and Lauren Sato moves to the shooting guard.  Sandra Gao, last season SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and an improved Laura Johnson gives Chapman some solid post play.  What will the bench bring....hard to say right now.

Good start for Panthers.  Hoops_lover, looks like they might have a bench with Nicole Moy, who just finished volleyball and Natalia Ebrahimian, a post player who's been solid.  Lynne Higashigawa has really stepped up starting for injured Lauren Sato. She's been a pleasant surprise.  Have a home game Saturday vs. George Fox.  Chapman beat them last year.  Kimi Takaoka is FIVE points from 1,000 in her career.

Congratulations to Kimi Takaoka for reaching 1,000 points vs George Fox two Saturday's ago.
Tough loss for the Panthers last night.  However a good game for Andrea Villanueva with 30 points and six rebounds, three steals.  Looks like she came out of her long shooting slump.  Hopefully this is a confidence builder for her and when Lauren Sato returns, the Panthers with these two, Takaoka and Gao, pretty nice firepower.  BTW, Gao fouled out with four minutes left.  If she would stop committing "silly fouls", she'd stay in the game longer.
Gotta hand it to Redlands, they made the plays down the stretch and Chapman did not (missed free throws).  love teams that show resiliency.  Very, very interesting game this Saturday with Chapman hosting Cal Lu.

Chapman struggled a little but defeated Cal Lu 81-72.  Regals without their three Al-SCIAC and seniors from last year are a different team.  Jessica Solottolo, Sofia Cruz and Chelsea Jacoby were the only firepower they had.  Jacoby is a player and Chapman was lucky she was in foul trouble.  I think they were missing someone else but for the life of me I can't think of who it was.
Gao, Takaoka and Villanueva combined for 59 of Chapman's 81 points.  But for a team that uses high pressure defense to create turnovers and easy scores, it's not working!  Cal Lu had one more turnover (19-18) than Chapman but outscored them 21-12.  They better tighten up their defensive rotations and keep the offensive players in front of them or when they really get into SCIAC play, they'll lose games they should have won.  They also need to get Takaoka more open looks at the basket, like with screens or pick and pop.

I've been MIA the past few weeks but now return to talk about the Chapman women's team who I try to see play ever chance I get, live stream or in person.  To me I think this team is the lukewarm favorite to win to finish first and host the SCIAC playoffs.  I say lukewarm because their size will be an issue for them.  An athletic post player gives them some trouble.  As hard as Gao plays, she tends to get in foul trouble albeit she's doing better than last season not committing silly fouls.  Takaoka and Gao should be under strong consideration for POY because they've been on every team's game plan. Takaoka has carried the offensive load for the majority of the season.  She hit a big three pointer with 22 seconds left in the game against Oxy last Saturday to put them ahead for the first time since early in the game.
Villanueva and Higashigawa have been playing better and better with each game.  Higashigawa who's used mainly to guard the opponent's best scorer, has now been contributing offensively hitting some clutch shots in the second half of the La Verne and Oxy games.  Villanueva has really settled down at the point.  She's personally responsible for the team's wins against Messiah, Claremont and La Verne.  Johnson played an outstanding game vs. Oxy and her two free throws sealed the win.  Moy and Ebrahimian and freshman Krysl are contributing positive minutes.  If they had Sato, who's injured, Chapman would be pretty tough to beat.
At this point of the season, the contenders are: Chapman, Cal Lu, Redlands, La Verne and CMC.  I give Chapman a slight nod to win the league and host the playoffs with Cal Lu 2nd, Redlands 3rd and CMC 4th.  I think Oxy is going to be a spoiler.  Thursday, Chapman goes to Cal Lu and one might think if Chapman wins, they'll have a stranglehold on first, I don't think so because somebody will knock them off.   This is going to be a GREAT GAME.

Cal Lu got revenge on Chapman with a ten point victory.  Cruz and Salottolo score 21 and 25 respectively.  Cal Lu took control of the game when they held Chapman scoreless for about eight minutes in the first half and turned a nine point deficit into a ten point lead.  Chapman tried to mount rallies but either Cruz or Salottolo hit a basket to increase the lead back into double digits.
Villanueva (Chapman) was incredible with 27 points on 12-19 shooting.

Saw last night's game, CMC vs Chapman.  I was ready to anoint Chapman as the team to beat in SCIAC after a MAGNIFICENT 1st half.  I don't know if you could play any better.  Supan, Chapman's back up point guard, has been playing much better; looks like she figured it out.  She makes quicker and BETTER decisions handling the ball and works harder on defense.  Prior to this, she held the ball to long and defense seemed to be an afterthought.  Hallstein, Chapman's tallest player has played well lately.  She's tough minded and aggressive and passes very well.  Where has she been hiding??
The second half was much different.  CMC's press was slowly affecting Chapman and when they got it to six points with under 4 minutes to play, this became anybody's game.  The confidence and swagger that Chapman played with in the 1st half was gone.  Very impressed with CMC's Scamman.  She would not let her team lose without a fight.  Barnes and Brackman rose up in the second half t help CMC's comeback.  What puzzles me is why do you call off your press when your down by three?  The other thing I couldn't figure out was why foul when Chapman had the ball and the shot clock was at 12?  A defensive stop would have gotten CMC the ball back with about 10 seconds left in the game.  Takaoka and Villanueva were amazing down the stretch.  I can't anoint Chapman as the team to beat, but if they win against Redlands Saturday, they're in the driver's seat.

Strong 2nd half leads Chapman to 59-41 victory over ULV and win #1 seed in SCIAC tourney, and will host CLU who takes 4th place tie-breaker with ULV. Chapman finished 2-0 against CMS and 1-1 against CLU.

CMS took down CLU 62-52 to capture #2 seed and will host Redlands, who finished third.

Other action saw Oxy down PP 71-58, and Whittier over CIT.

SCIAC Playoffs begin tonight:
Redlands @ CMS:
I see this one as an all out war.  For me, Redlands has the edge in rebounding (almost 100 more than their opponents) and defensively creating just over nine steals a game.  CMS has the unflappable Scamman, who will keep CMS close and find a way to win the game.  I think Redlands has a little more depth and will end up winning in OT by three points.
Cal Lutheran @ Chapman:
Chapman was terrible in the first half at La Verne, but OMG they dominated La Verne in the second half to pull away.  They cannot have a mediocre game tonight because Cal Lutheran is a tough match up problem for them.  I think this game for Chapman will be tougher than the championship game (if Chapman wins).  If they play like they did in the 2nd half of the La Verne game, Chapman wins by 14-18 points.  If Chapman does stay focused the entire game, the game is close and Cal Lutheran may squeeze out the win.  Close game, I'll take Chapman by five.

CMC @ Chapman:
Chapman is 2-0 vs. CMS this season.  Third time the charm, but for which team.  For CMS to win, they'll need to not allow Chapman to control the boards.  Gao, Johnson, Ebrahimian, Moy, Hallstein and Villanueva average over 3+ boards a game.  Who else will rise to the occasion to help Scamman, Barnes and Brackman.  Perhaps it could be Ray?  Chapman CANNOT ALLOW Scamann to get to the paint as she easily does.  She's the reason why the Chapman games against CMS are close.  Scamman is unflappable and sometimes unstoppable as she proved against Redlands the other night.  If someone else doesn't step up for CMS, Chapman will win by 12-16 points.   I still like Chapman to win if the game is close.  Takaoka and Villanueva are clutch players.
I don't like to individualize the great team sport of basketball, but the winner of tonight's contest could determine the SCIAC POY: either Chapman's Takaoka or CMS's  Scammann.  I think Takaoka should get it because her team lost two starters just as the season started and she's put the team on her back in several games this year when her teammates play was sometimes inconsistent.  Scammann has kept her team in games, but Takaoka has been very consistent.

Congratulations to CMS for winning the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.  Tough game vs. DePauw, but Chapman has a tough one also vs Whitman.  Hey but we got two teams in and I see the conference to be stronger top to bottom next year.
I just want to say how well the Athena's played Saturday night.  The coaching staff did a nice job implementing their game plan to NOT ALLOW Takaoka to get the ball and smother her when she got it.  It was mostly Barnes did a fantastic job shadowing her.  I mentioned in my previous post who else would step up for CMS and it was a trio of players, Dobbert, Dungca and especially Ray.  Ray controlled the game and made big play after big play when needed.  CMS also shot very well and seemed much more in sync.
For Chapman, it was a lesson learned on how to handle adversity.  The greatest coach in the world can't teach it because it's an individual as well as a team thing.  When Takaoka was having a difficult time getting open someone else had to step up other than Villanueva and Gao.  Higashigawa did, but the bench didn't produce as they had in the past and there were some costly turnovers form the starters as well as the bench players.  As the lead grew, Chapman mistakes rose.
I believe the Al-SCIAC teams will be announced shortly.  I said previously that Takaoka should be selected as POY.  I also think Coach of the Year should go to Jue.  She did a masterful job guiding this team through the multitude of injuries (two starters out for the season) but it helped develop a deeper bench and lack of experience in some positions.

The opening day of the 2015-16 basketball season started with a bang. The NCAA announcing major violations by Thomas More which resulted in vacating the entire 2014-15 season including the national championship - the first time in the history of Division III basketball, men or women. Tonight on Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), continuing coverage of the fallout of that decision including an exclusive one-on-one interview with Coach Jeff Hans of Thomas More.

Plus we take a look at the start of the season and talk with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball who is no longer flying under the radar. We also talk to the Trine women who want to take control of the MIAA. Plus we hear from two men's coaches starting anew at Case Western Reserve and SUNY-Canton.

The saying in the NFL is: "on any given Sunday." The idea being that anyone can win a game no matter the match up because, well, things happen. The same could be true in Division III basketball. On any given night, someone will pull off an upset. And in some weeks we see multiple upsets.

What to make of it all? Tune into Sunday's edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) as Dave tries to make sense of most of it with guests from around the country who can provide their insight.

Also on tap for tonight, can Amherst women run the table? What to make of William Peace men's basketball. And why one coach is highly regarded in the Chinese-American culture.

Tune in starting at 7:00 PM ET here: http://www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2016-17/jan15 - or via Facebook Live. If you can't watch the show live, you can catch up On Demand once it is off the air or download the podcast via SoundCloud or iTunes.

Guests scheduled (in order of appearance):
- G.P. Gromacki, No. 2 Amherst women's head coach
- Claude Shields, William Peace men's coach
- Carol Jue, Chapman women's coach - WBCA Center Court
- Mark Beinborn, Augustana women's coach
- Ira Thor, New Jersey City SID - Atlantic Regional Reporter

And don't forget about the Hoopsville Mailbag segment! Email questions you may have to the show at hoopsville@d3hoops.com and we will answer them tonight or on a future show.

Last night I went to the CMS game vs U Texas at Dallas in the first round of the playoffs.  CMS had a very nice victory.
CMS has an exciting team and played swarming defense.
I was especially taken by the 4' 9" point guard  from CMS.

Try to watch this live on your computer tonight,

CMS will be playing Trinity.

That 4'9" PG played a fine game.   I thought the two bench players, Young and Love, were going to win that game for them the way they played in the fourth quarter.

Yes they did.
Love is just a freshman.
I had a nice talk with the mother of #10, Kris Brackmann.  She is from Washington state.  Her mother says a lot of kids head south because of the weather.

I like 3#15, Holland on Trinity.  Another first year.

Chapman is a recent member of the SCIAC and the conference made them jump through a few hoops to get in.  They were an independent out there for a long time, which is, I assume, why the thread title is as it is.

The SCIAC awards need to be selected by the conference officials themselves not the coaches.

CMS has won outright or shared the conference title for 6 STRAIGHT seasons:
- 4 tournament titles
- Only 2 Players Of Year (not since 16')
- Only 1 Coach Of Year  (not since 15')
- 3 outright titles/ 3 shared
- the only team in the conference to compete & win any NCAA tournament games (2) & the games lost were all close except one 2nd round game.

I honestly can't understand what criteria these coaches use to select these awards.

Just wanted to share my opinion with facts.

If you look at the calendar, we are midway through the 2019-20 regular season. While there are probably more games ahead than behind for many teams, we now find ourselves looking at the half of the campaign.

What have we learned so far? Anything?

We may not be able to answer all of those questions, but we will see if we can turn over a few more rocks to find more clues on Thursday night's Hoopsville.

We will chat with a men's program that has gone from obscurity to at least being in the conference and regional conversation (if not national). Another men's program is about as high as they can go in the national convo, but do we really know how good they are and is there pressure to win it all? Plus a women's team many of you might not be talking about now, but probably will be chatting about come tournament time.

Tonight is also the season debut of the WBCA Center Court segment. We talk to Randy Tuggle, the head coach at Greensboro, on why the season is the perfect distraction for a far bigger priority. Tuggle chats with us about his battle with pancreatic cancer and how his team (and family) have been there every step of the way.

Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch Sunday's show LIVE in the following ways:
- Main page: www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville
- Show page: http://bit.ly/2QZpezb (or www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2019-20/jan9)

- Team1 Sports app (https://team1sports.com/) (Android TV, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Roku) - you will either find it under the "live" section or search for the Hoopsville channel

Thursday's show primarily covers the East, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and West Regions while also featuring a women's coach in the WBCA Center Court segment. All men's coaches appear in the NABC Coach's Corner. And all guests are featured on the BlueFrame Technology Hoopsville Hotline.

If you have questions about Division III basketball, feel free to send them and we will answer them on a the show. Email them to hoopsville@d3hoops.com or use any of the social media options.

Guests Schedule (order subject to change):
- Rich Murphy, Redlands women's coach
- Randy Tuggle, Greensboro women's coach (WBCA Center Court)
- Sean Coffey, Utica men's coach
- Matt Croci, No. 2 Wittenberg men's coach

It seems that I have been the only member of the only (unofficial) fall sport at WashU, with my 100-mile ultramarathon attempt earlier this month to promote the fight for a cure during Rett Syndrome Awareness Month.  That attempt fell a bit short in miles and fundraising, so I'm going into overtime to try and reach $5,000 in donations.

Rett Gets Rocked 50K for $5K will commence Friday, October 30 at 8 pm Central, and end at 8 am Halloween morning.  Counting donations received (thanks to retired WashU men's basketball coach Mark Edwards and his wife Mary, and to Mike McGrath and his  University of Chicago men's basketball program for their donations!) and those yet to be sent and processed, I am at $4,440.53.  Very, very close to my goal...which will fund a researcher's work for a month.  Wouldn't it be cool if he or she cracked the code for a cure of Rett syndrome, on our dime?!

I reached 86 miles in my "Rett Gets Rocked Virtual Ultra Weekend" October 3-4.  I'm very proud of that result, but there's more work to be done.  Proceeds from the event will be split between Rettsyndrome.org (the only national organization spearheading research and providing resources for affected patients and their families) and the Rett Spectrum Clinic--a collaboration between the WashU School of Medicine and St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Rett syndrome is a rare, non-inherited neurological disorder that is caused by a gene mutation in the brain.  It primarily affects girls (1 in every 10,000 girls develop Rett).  It strikes typically when a child is 6-18 months old, and it has the characteristics of ALS, autism, epilepsy, and Parkinson's...all rolled into one sinister disorder.  It takes away the child's ability to move and communicate.

In essence, Rett does to a child what Lucy in the "Peanuts" comic strip does to Charlie Brown when he tries to kick the football that she is holding.  The only difference is that Charlie Brown can get back up to try again.  Those who are afflicted with Rett syndrome don't get another chance to enjoy a vibrant life.

Researchers are working to re-engineer the gene mutation that turns on Rett, so it can be forever turned off.  Four drug therapies are in the FDA review pipeline, with one (trofanitide) one level away from review.  And, iPad tablets with retinal scan technology are giving those with Rett a voice they haven't had since they were toddlers.

The full court press on Rett is paying off.  You can help keep the pressure on Rett, by going to my Rett Racers donation page:  https://rettracer.everydayhero.com/us/rett-gets-rocked-2020

Thanks for your time and consideration, and hopefully there will be basketball to play and broadcast at the start of 2021!
