Calvin's game on Saturday really demonstrated the problem with the lack of depth in backup players.  After playing really well against a good team on Friday night (with the starters as usual this year playing almost the entire game), the players appeared to be just about exhausted soon after the game started on Saturday.  I fear that the pattern of games alternating between well played games and games in which the team looks really bad may continue with the starters playing so many minutes.  One encouraging thing on Saturday is their freshman big man, De Krygter, looked more active and more aware of what was expected on the court in only his second game.  It was interesting to see a larger number of guards have a shot at playing time, but most did not seem to be able to score.  They did fine setting up others.

Agreed. Which would you rather win? Regular season or Tournament?

A short bench definitely hurts when playing back to back games.  With Wed. and Sat. games in the MIAA that should be minimized, and will also give the younger players time to develop.  By the time the tournament rolls around the bench will be longer.

How often are players added at the semester? ie. Jimmy Schipper

Calvin lost to Wheaton 76 to 67.  After taking an early lead, playing even for much of the game, Calvin fell behind and could not catch up.  The lack of scoring depth really shows up in the box score.  Two players scored 47 points.  No other player scored more than 6.  Reserves totaled 4 points.  It will take some seasons to rebuild to the point of being really competitive.  De Vries and Shymanski are outstanding scorers and Bos is really key on defense, rebounding, and some additional scoring.  De Witt can hit some threes, but he is not getting the percentage I would wish to see.  Subs do a good job on defense and rebounding.  But we need more scorers.

Cam Denney is the last semester break addition for Calvin that comes to mind.   It probably has happened about once a decade.
I really was pointing towards the non starters to step up into the college game, and begin playing some minutes.  After last night I agree it is going to take several years for Calvin to regain what it lost over the years with lackluster coaching/recruiting.

Goknights2017

After a good start last night, the knights fell to a very beatable Wheaton team. Other than the lack of depth that has been mentioned already, the defense was particularly bad. Wheaton shot nearly 50% from the field. There also were countless back-cuts that led to uncontested layups or fouls and free-throws. If this team wants to win the MIAA, they have to improve the defense.

I noticed during the UW-Oshkosh game that the back door was wide open. That was indeed a big issue again against Wheaton.

I read the response first and assumed the original post would be about some opponent trying to use the winter temps to make one side of the court much colder.  That would be a fun wrinkle.

Anyone who's been to DeVos knows very well cold air sinks.

TUAngola

Adrian wins 2 games and Trine loses 2 games this weekend in Angola vs Hiram and Loras.  The good news for Trine is that Maurice Hunter is back from his injury suffered in the 1st game of the season.  The bad news is we didn't play very well at all this weekend, especially defensively and rebounding in either game.  If we don't play defense and rebound consistently then we won't win many games.  Hiram hits a 3 pointer (and 1) with 1.7 seconds to win yesterday and today Jake Daniels misses a wide open 3 at the buzzer that would have won it against Loras.  Jake had a miserable shooting day, conversely Langston Johnson dropped 38 with 28 coming in the 1st half.  If he wasn't on then this game would have been a romp.

Adrian looks to be better than the preseason MIAA coaches poll predicted.  Harris and Kalonji are 2 of the better gifted offensive players in MIAA.  They both can get their shots whenever they want.  They were hands down the 2 best players on the court this weekend of the 4 teams.  But it's the role players on their team who played well too, they hustle and rebound.  They definitely looked much better this weekend than Trine.

Albion 69  Rose Hulman 64

Little different Albion team than last year.  More post depth, less guard depth but maybe better in both areas.  Albion didn't have its best night shooting but they outworkd RHIT for loose balls and rebounds and that was a pretty large reason they walked away with this W.  Albion was pretty tough down the stretch and pulled away a bit in what was a pretty close game throughout.  Caden Ebeling had some first half foul trouble that limited his night.

MJ Barnes is coming off the bench the last couple games, noticed he had a brace on his left wrist which disappeared at halftime.   I believe Fr. Josh Palo has moved into a starting role.

If you don't have good PG play you're going to have a hard time beating the Brits.  Jamezelle Davis was so smooth tonight, exactly 1 turnover and really good command of his role, absolutely lethal on the few fast break opportunities this game afforded.

At this point d3hoops.com needs to do an expose on Davis's incredible ability to hit the big shot, yet another buzzer beater this one a 3 at the end of the first half.

Albion is off until the 17th when they play DePauw at Transylvania , then they get Marietta or Transylvania.  Either one a really good Great Lakes pairing.  They could certainly have no more than 2 or 3 losses by MIAA play.

Looked at his games played this year, and shots he has taken with less than 30 seconds left till the end of the period (half, game, OT).  He is 3-5 from the field including 2-4 from 3!!

He did it again.  Albion was down (versus DePauw) with under 1:30 to play, and were something like 0-10 from 3 as a team.  Davis hits a 3 with 1:06 left to tie the game, then hits a deep 3 with 0:11 on the clock to give the Britons the lead for good.

Live stats (and thus the MIAA website) have the score backwards - Albion 63 DePauw 61 was the final
