NPU assistant coach Joe Fano has just been hired as the new head coach at St. Mary's (MN).

Good luck to Joe. He's stepping into a tough situation, as the Cardinals haven't had a winning campaign in over three decades, and they've suffered through 20-loss seasons in five of the last seven years.

Including L 24 and 3-37 over last 40 games

Change on the way in Winona.

The timing is odd, AD also stepped down recently, and there may be more to the story than the 24-101 record over 5 years.

ShineTime:

Did you watch the game? River Falls got shots they normally take and make, they just didn't fall last night.

Like others mentioned, maybe the 2OT game Friday took too much out of them and they didn't have their legs and came up short on some shots.

River Falls finished 25-4. Won Regular season and conference tournament championship. FredFalcon can correct me if wtong, but I believe Friday was first ever NCAA tournament win in program history...I'm guessing coaching played a part in that as well.

As Roy Williams said "I must have the easiest job in America, because everyone else can do it better than me"

Kilroy - noticed a few rotation guys from last year missing on the SMU roster, mainly Ronnie Ortiz. The freshman from Washburn you referenced may get thrown to the fire right away. Back to back years losing Pederson and Ortiz who had the ball a lot for Coach Rusthoven's squad.

I've heard some good things as well about the Mac combo.

Per Hoopdirt yesterday, Bethel coach Doug Novak is involved with the opening at The Citadel. Novak was an assistant there for 4 years. Something to keep an eye on. May or may not affect recruiting.

AO - don't think MIACMIAC will be back for awhile. Congrats.

I will not run or hide from comments I made earlier this year. I thought the tommies may be coming back to the pack but I was wrong. They haven't been the consistent defensive juggernaut they'd been in the past, but they did what was necessary to lock up #10. Congrats to them.

No doubt JT is a good coach and good psychology teacher, but let's call it what it is. UST 1-18 has more talent than the rest of the league. Fritz didn't win all those games late in his career because of psychology, he won with talent. 2011 they had talent.

St Thomas as a school also has a tremendous brand. Kids grow up wanting to go to The U, but after that, UST has a brand right on par or better than just about every other school in the state. I'm not saying just anyone could win either. They have great coaches that could be at higher level jobs (softball coach turned down Minnesota). They understand the importance of athletics and financially show that.

SJU has a good brand and gets lots of legacy kids, also not afraid to spend on upgrades for facilities, but UST has better location.

Carleton has a brand with high academic kids in the state, so they get the talented high academic kids. MAC doesn't anymore.

Bethel has its niche, GAC as well. SMU doesn't have a good brand. Had some success in some sports but in basketball they have struggled. For a long time.

It all comes back to talent. Congrats to the Tommies and Coach Tauer for the national attention, his use of psychological tactics just works much better because of talented players.

St Olaf and Coach Koz deserve a ton of credit too. That matchup of top 15 teams is great for the league. Round 3 should be fun between those 2.

As the final week closes I'm curious to hear others thoughts:

Does Whittle survive at MAC?

Does MAC get the sweep of SMU on Saturday?

Hamline seems to be moving in right direction but loses some key pieces and size, but Coach Hayes in 2 years has done a nice job getting Hamline past the incident a few years back.

Who retires first, Guy Kalland or Jim Smith?

Bethel coach has done a remarkable job in his first 2 years. I think he'll continue to do well.

SMU needs a lot of help and talent. They talk about being young and next year "could be special", but I just don't see the talent level there compared to rest of the league. Lost 7 of last 8 by 19+ and probably looking at 7 wins in 2 years.

Completely agree with previous two posts. SJU needs to get rid of baseline cameras. Not only does it make you sick while watching, it goes to baseline cameras at wrong times of the game and you can't see what's going on. Tough loss for Hamline though last night. Made some shots and had the ball up 3 with 11 seconds to go.

Nice win for Augsburg last night. Coach Griess can flat out coach. I know that's not breaking news, but to start the year most would agree this is the least amount of talent he's had in past 6 years or so.

Oles handled SMU, especially the last 12 minutes when SMU only managed 6 points. While having upperclassmen is usually a plus, it doesn't always mean more wins. But something that wins is talent and guys who can make shots. Olaf just has more of both, not just older and stronger. Will be interesting to see how long Figini is out.

Hello All,

My name is Matt Christensen. I've been following the Board ever since my brother,Scott, was playing at Carleton. I am an Ole Hooper Alum '09. I was an assistant at Carleton for 4 years. I am currently helping out in my second year at Rochester Community and Technical College with the Men's Program.

I look forward to contributing to the Board.

Let's get to it!

Bethel- Bridge will make a significant difference to Bethel on both sides of the ball. Bridge's aggressiveness suits perfectly with Coach Novak's style of play.  Paired with Wojta (former AAU teammate- I coached them with the MN Fury), these two will reek havoc on opposing guards.  In fact, these two are so competitive, and so skilled, they may help Bethel contend for a conference crown in the next couple of years. (Not easy for an Ole to say).

Speaking of Oles. The biggest disappointment from watching them last year for their NCAA appearance was that the Ole's got a little gun shy from 3. Their opponent continually went under the ball screen, and they didn't punish them for it. I thought it would be guns-a-blazin'.

With that being said, I am extremely happy for Coach Koz and the program, and am looking forward to watching St. Olaf make another deep run this year. Justin Pahl is taking a big leap forward, Sterling Nielsen is Mr. Cool at the point, and the big X-fer Figini could make all the difference.

St. Thomas is loaded with depth. We all know they are good.

Coach Hayes will have an improved Hamline squad, as he is one of the best recruiters in the area. I'm curious to see how the talent he has brought in pans out this year.

I heard from a lil birdie that SMU is working diligently to bring in talent, and has been hitting the recruiting trail hard. I look forward to watching their progression this year in terms of implementing the system Coach R wants. If SMU can have a competitive season, it could give Coach R the recruiting power he needs to get SMU over the playoff hump.

Gustavus. Do you know I can always spot a Gustie alum hooper when playing pick up ball? The solid defense, disciplined shot selection, tough screening, and they always hustle. It was annoying to play against then, and it's even worse now (c'mon man, it's men's league!). These staples are why Gac is always in the mix, especially for a motion offense that needs time to gel, by the end of the season.

Macalester. They have an underrated coaching staff. They got a few talented players. Depth is always the issue.

Carleton. I coached and recruited a lot of these kids, so I'm rooting for them. As much as the Knights use the 3 ball, post play is really the core of the program. You know McSparron will have a big year if healthy, and Biewen is lights out from 3 (despite the 1-10 game).  I think the season hinges on the growth of John Eckert on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

Couldn't tell ya a lick about Concordia this year. Anyone have insight?

Augsburg. Is it not great seeing Parker Hines healthy and on the floor? Gotta love that. Holy Collin Olmscheid. This 6'7" Buffalo FY seems to be stuffing the stat sheet. Anyone got a scoop on him?

The Johnnies. While I have not watched them this year, they changed up their offensive style of play a couple years back, and I think they may beginning to see some fruits of their labor. A nice 3 point "W" over St. Cloud St certainly is noteworthy. Man, can Mitchell Kuck put the ball in the basket! His quick release from 3, and ability to put it on the floor makes him one of the most explosive scorers in the league.

I'm looking forward to others insights after the first MIAC match ups tonight.

MC

No offense but a little birdie told me every coaching staff in the league is working hard to bring in talent. SMU has more bodies this year for sure, but that was expected. New coach selling his vision. Year 2 and 3 recruiting is when things come back to a more normal number.

Coach Hayes at Hamline will have his team defending, their key and a key for all those battling behind the top couple teams is taking care of the ball. Self inflicted missed opportunities to get a shot are killers.

Watched bits and pieces of Bethel this week, man do they move the ball. Really fun to watch. At times it's like watching an international game.

As you said, great to see Parker Hines playing. One of most complete guards in the league.

Got a good laugh at your explanation of a Gustie...but all true.

Although I disagreed with some stuff, enjoyed your input.

Tommies have certainly made a statement in last 10 days or so. I was one who questioned if they were coming back to the pack, and I still believe this is unanswered, but very impressed with exhibition win especially.

Good win for Hamline over UMAC favorite Northwestern. Pipers shot it well in 2nd half. Cobbers and Oles also handled their UMAC opponents.

Bethel opened with a win over UW River Falls. UWRF comes back to play Hamline this week. Good matchups at multiple positions in that one.

Falcons fall to Division 2 Augustana, SD, 81-69 in an overtime exhibition game in Sioux Falls. Game tied 65 all in regulation. Augustana picked to finish 2nd in NSIC. Falcons looked better than predicted 8th place finish tonight with several good transfers and freshmen. One transfer, Jon Christensen from St. Scholastica, had a dbl/dbl w/17 pts., 10 rbds.

Christensen is a D2 transfer from St Cloud St, not St Scholastica. Should be one of Falcons best players this year. Tough one for the Falcons opening at a very much improved Bethel squad.

From what I've heard, Tussler will be suiting up for Bethel. The Royals could be really tough this year.

Only 2 freshman for the Oles, but transfer Ben Figini should provide something positive on the inside, or on the glass going after all those 3's thrown up.

Mac...who knows. Should be more of the same.

I've heard also some good things early on at Hamline, from both freshman and underclassmen.

SMU...Kilroy should be able to provide more info. That's his school and he's the Northstar guru.

SJU will have 40 guys on the roster I'm sure. Always have talent to choose from. How will they all fit together???

UST...obviously has talent. They've come back to the pack a little. I'm just guessing here, but I wonder if sense of urgency and chip on the shoulder that Schnettler, Ike, Lonnie Robinson, Al McCoy had has worn down .

Concordia is always an interesting one. They'll have size. Can they make shots on the road?

GAC will be GAC. Tough every night regardless of who's out there. Move the ball. Switch a lot on D, which is tough to play against when you don't see it every day.

Heard nothing on most of the names and specifics of recruiting classes, anxious just like you Drake to see them slowly appear.

Board is dead and has been for quite some time.

Thought I'd break the silence and throw some info out there.

Bethel has a chance to give UST a run next year. Addition of Bridge Tusler and Kyle Zimmerman getting another year gives them a boost inside and out.

The following players will all NOT be returning to SMU next year
Evan Pederson
Trent Vix
Johnny Spillane
Ben Meyer
Brandon Larson

The loss of Pederson and Vix is huge to the backcourt. Lots of minutes there. 5 guys leaving after year 1 for Coach R is not a great sign. Also heard there may be a freshman or 2 not return.

SMU will bring back Mark Schumacher after a year hiatus. Be interesting to see how long it takes him to get his legs back. Was a very good high school player and had some good games as a freshman.

Johnnies will have 40 guys on roster to choose from, so they'll always have talent.

Gusties were young last year and will have some key guys to replace but Hansen and his motion O will always shoot a good percentage and guard you.

Kilroy -
How's recruiting for a couple of the new coaches in the league at SMU and Bethel?

I've heard Hamline has about 5-6 commits and they're pleased with what their class could end up looking like.

Interesting... I don't remember this in the past... Per the WIAC conference tournament page:

*Conference policy indicates there will be no live video streaming of any WIAC Basketball Championship games

Personally I think this is just stupid and makes no sense.  There are followers, like myself, of the WIAC but happen to live in other parts of the country and I am not able to see the high quality basketball that is the WIAC Conference Tournament.

Very disappointing.  Not having live video will not result in more people coming and watching live.  It will result in less people watching d3 basketball at its best in any form.

Coach Juckem has not a nice job of getting Oshkosh back in the playoffs and there seems to be some renewed energy and excitement in Oshkosh and in Kolf.
