Paul Heering suggested this last year

my friends and I do a Masters pool for golf every year and you get too pick one guy from three different polls and their total score counts for you.  pool are the best guys, pool b are pretty good, and pool c is everyone else.

how about this?  each person picks 3 teams from any four regions, one from each pool.

Pool A--2007 NCAA playoff qualifiers
Pool B--Teams with a winning record last year but did not qualify for the playoffs
Pool C--Teams with a losing record last year

point system

Each win = 1 point
NCAA birth = 5 bonus points
NCAA regional win = 10 bonus points
National Championship = 50 bonus points

For example my entry last year:

Region:Pool A, Pool B, Pool C.
Mid Atlantic: Kean, William Paterson, Lebanon Valley College
South:  NC Wesleyan, Virginia Wesleyan, Averett
Midwest: St Thomas, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Beloit
West: Chapman, Cal State East Bay, La Verne

anybody interested?

Not that I've got a big problem with it, but why limit to 4 regions?

Edit: another idiot nitpick, but which group is a team that was exactly .500 in?

Limiting it to 4 regions allowed one to keep in the regions they might know better.  Few people will admit that they know all eight regions well.

Put a team with a .500 record in Pool B.  0.500 is obviously not a winning record but it is generally viewed as a positive.

Oops...didn't mean to delete my original post. Thanks for the clarification.

Paul Heering

When I originally proposed it I went with four regions because (selfishly) that is about all I could make educated picks on and (unselfishly) it would open it up to more people that may not know enough to pick all the regions.

But yes, four regions was somewhat arbitrary.

Spence

Are we still doing this?

I'll start, y'all better not cheat off me.

Mideast -- Marietta, Mount St. Joseph, Capital
West -- Chapman, UT Tyler, Trinity
Central -- Carthage, Illinois Wesleyan, Aurora
South -- Emory, Rhodes, Catholic

Ralph Turner

I like the four regions, too.  It requires a fan to follow more than his own conference, but doesn't overwhelm the fan with the usual bookkeeping activities.

OshDude

I'll give it a go.

Midwest: Oshkosh, Whitewater, Augsburg
West: Chapman, Linfield, Trinity
Central: Illinois Wesleyan, Wartburg, Central
Mideast: Wooster, Transylvania, Capital

Would like to cheat off of you, but if I understand the rules, I think you have two illegal teams. Both were in the playoffs last year.

Spence

OK I think I need to start over then.

Mideast -- Marietta, Transy, Capital
West -- Chapman, UT-Tyler, Trinity
New York -- Cortland, Rensselaer, Old Westbury
Mid-Atlantic -- Johns Hopkins, Keystone, Messiah (does that conference still get an automatic berth? If not I probably want to change this one).

Spence.....

Just curious, why did you pick RPI for one of your New York picks?  That's right, the topic is Fantasy Baseball 2008.    ;D

Spence, as everyone probably knows, I'm a diehard Titan.  But I'll argue you 'cheated' on IWU only on a technicality: anyone who blinked might never have even seen that we were in the playoffs (and we were hosting)!

Man, do we have unfinished business this year! :-[ >:(

Confused as to the humor, but the answer is because I couldn't pick Ithaca. Rensselaer is who I thought was probably the most likely team to make the field up there that wasn't in it this year. They were like 29-10 last year and their ace is back.

I needed to find a new region if I couldn't pick IWU. Too many contenders in too few conferences in the Central. Couldn't find a good non-tourney team in New England, and wasn't sure if Catholic's new league had an automatic berth (if it does, I might have to change again lol) to go with the South.

The Carthage nation is hoping that the business remains unfinished this season.
Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.
