Well, here is the first regional ranking for the Great Lakes Region:

GREAT LAKES
1 Carnegie Mellon 13-0-1 (UAA)
2 Thomas More 12-0-1 (PAC)
3 Case Western Reserve 7-4-3 (UAA)
4 Denison 12-2-0 (NCAC)
5 DePauw 8-5-1 (NCAC)
6 Franklin 11-1-0 (HCAC)
7 Capital 9-4-0 (OAC)
8 Ohio Northern 8-6-1 (OAC)

Only "surprise" may be DePauw at #5, though with the third strongest SOS in the region and 4 of its losses against other regionally ranked teams, it shouldn't be a shock. Besides, its early and things may shake themselves out.  Any omissions?

The second regional ranking for the Great Lakes Region is our:

GREAT LAKES
1 Carnegie Mellon 13-0-1 (UAA)
2 Thomas More 12-0-1 (PAC)
3. Denison 13-2-0 (NCAC)
4 Case Western Reserve 7-4-4 (UAA)
5 Hanover 10-5-0 (HCAC)
6 Franklin 12-2-0 (HCAC)
7 Capital 11-4-0 (OAC)
8 DePauw 9-6-1 (NCAC)

DePauw's loss to Denison and Hanover's win over Franklin certainly caused a bit of a shake-up. The rankings did not pick up Denison's loss to Wittenberg on Tuesday night, so there may be some movement next week, depending on how the week goes.  Kenyon and ONU are knocking on the door, though I suspect that their SOSs are holding them back. Anyone else?

Here are the third and final public regional ranking for the Great Lakes Region. There will be one more as part of the process of building the tournament bracket but it is not released:

GREAT LAKES
1 Carnegie Mellon 14-1-1 (UAA)
2 Thomas More 15-0-2 (PAC)
3 Denison 14-3 (NCAC)
4 Hanover 12-5* (HCAC)
5 Franklin 14-2* (HCAC)
6 Capital 13-4 (OAC)
7 DePauw 10-6-1 (NCAC)
8 Wittenberg 10-5-2 (NCAC)

* This is the teams record against Division III opponents. Both have an additional win against a non-Div. III opponent.

Since the rankings were posted, Thomas More, Denison, Hanover, Franklin, Capital, and DePauw have all won. All are playing in the finals of their conference tournaments. Carnegie-Mellon plays Case Western today and with some help from the University of Chicago (who plays Washington University at St. Louis today), CM can win the UAA automatic bid.

I suspect that Carnegie-Mellon and Denison will be in the mix for Pool C bids if needed. If Capital, Hanover, Franklin or DePauw lose and fall into Pool C, I suspect they have a harder times getting a bid, especially Franklin, Capital or DePauw.

With yesterday's results, we know that the teams in bold have an automatic qualifier into the NCAA tournament:

1 Carnegie Mellon (UAA)
2 Thomas More (PAC)
3 Denison (NCAC)
4 Hanover (HCAC)
5 Franklin (HCAC)
6 Capital (OAC)
7 DePauw (NCAC)
8 Wittenberg (NCAC)

My sense is that Carnegie Mellon and Denison will receive Pool C bids while the Grizzles and Tigers miss the tournament. Any other sleepers in the Great Lakes who have a chance?

Congratulations to Carnegie Mellon and Denison on receiving Pool C bids to the NCAA tournament.  Here is the first round pairing for teams in the Region:

Carnegie Mellon (15-1-1, Pool C, UAA) vs. Cabrini (11-5-3, Pool A, CSAC) @ Carnegie Mellon

Thomas More (17-0-2, Pool A) vs. Piedmont (20-1-1, Pool A USA South) @ Thomas More

Denison (15-4, Pool C, NCAC) vs. DeSales (14-5, Pool A, Freedom) @ Denison

Hanover (15-5, Pool A, HCAC) vs. Capital (14-4-1, Pool A, OAC) @ Centre

DePauw (12-6-1, Pool A, NCAC) vs. UW-Oshkosh (14-4-2, Pool C, WIAC) @ Calvin

Two interesting observations--first, Carnegie Mellon, Thomas More, and Denison all are hosting first and second round games; and, second, two teams from the Region (Hanover and Capital) square off  in the first round. I will post predictions later in the week.

With the first and second rounds rapidly approaching, here are my projections as to how the Great Lakes Region teams will do, with the winner in bold:

Carnegie Mellon (15-1-1, Pool C, UAA) vs. Cabrini (11-5-3, Pool A, CSAC) @ Carnegie Mellon

Thomas More (17-0-2, Pool A) vs. Piedmont (20-1-1, Pool A USA South) @ Thomas More

Denison (15-4, Pool C, NCAC) vs. DeSales (14-5, Pool A, Freedom) @ Denison

Hanover (15-5, Pool A, HCAC) vs. Capital (14-4-1, Pool A, OAC) @ Centre

DePauw (12-6-1, Pool A, NCAC) vs. UW-Oshkosh (14-4-2, Pool C, WIAC) @ Calvin

Good luck to all of the teams this weekend and hopefully we will have exciting and safe matches.

Congratulations to Carnegie Mellon, Thomas More, Denison, Capital, and DePauw on wins in the first round of the NCAA tournament. A strong showing by the region's teams, especially since Hanover played Capital, making sure that a team from the region would lose in that round.

The DePauw's 0-1 second round loss to Calvin yesterday leaves the region with the following teams still in the tournament:

Carnegie Mellon vs. Oneonta State @ Carnegie Mellon

Thomas More vs. Chicago @ Thomas More

Denison vs. Washington University at St. Louis @ Denison

Capital vs. Centre @ Centre

My prediction is that Carnegie Mellon and Thomas More go through, while Denison and Capital join DePauw and Hanover in the ranks of those finished for the year.

Good luck to all of the teams this weekend and hopefully we will have exciting and safe matches. Also, congratulations to Hanover and DePauw on good seasons and best wishes to the seniors who have finished their college soccer careers.

Congratulations to Carnegie Mellon and Thomas More on making it to the Sweet 16. Best of luck to them next weekend as Carnegie Mellon faces Calvin and Thomas More plays Centre. Both games are at Carnegie Mellon on Friday, with the regional final on Saturday.
