First game that counts is tomorrow night with Kzoo hosting Grace Christian.

Nov. 8 is the first date for countable competition, so that's looking like an exhibition for Kalamazoo (and they have 24 games that count). Unless they somehow have an exemption?

Honestly it doesn't matter though, since it's an out-of-division game, it won't count for or against anyone's tournament resume.

Calvin's Jalen Overway has been named to the 2nd team of the d3hoops dot com preseason All America list

Thanks to a note from OC_SID I now know that Olivet does have a JV roster (guess I can't trust my old eyes so much anymore).  I have updated the two posts about the recruits and unknown newcomers to reflect that.

So no Vince Overway for Calvin on Friday?

He played in the final 10-minute segment but not in the first two 20-minute halves.

Calvin 'won' both 20 minute periods tonight in the scrimmage vs Davenport. The first period was 42-27, and the second was 41-38. Calvin went 11 players deep in both periods.

Overway, Bult, Varnado, Egekeze, and Riemersma were the starters. Ressler, Winkle, Harvey, Ewing, Ambrose, and Scott came off the bench. Logan Van Essen is in a walking boot.

There was a final 10 minute segment in which both teams only played the guys at the end of the bench. Davenport won that.

Calvin will start the season ranked #10. Hope and Trine are also receiving votes.

Grunder has no eligibility left.  He didn't play his first year but was still enrolled.  I believe he took the covid year off which wouldn't give him an extra year of eligibility, but he was a HS class of 2017 graduate and had already taken the year after graduating off from enrolling. I am surprised I haven't seen his name pop up as an assistant coach somewhere yet as he's said he wants to get into coaching.

It sounds like he should have 1 year of eligibility left. The NCAA Division 3 rule is still 5 years (10 semesters / 15 quarters) of enrollment to play 4 seasons of the sport. The years he was not enrolled in school do not count against eligibility.

Conference Changes Starting in 2024-2025

Texas-Dallas leaves the ASC for D2 (application process pending)

This move is supposed to happen in 2025, right?
As I understand it, they apply in February 2024 and the acceptance decision is Summer 2024. If accepted the provisional period would begin right away in Fall 2024. As things went with Sul Ross, there's likely to be a waiver allowing them to count for D3 opponents for one additional year and they're likely to play essentially a D3 schedule that year, but they won't be eligible themselves.

Here's Regent's press release about exploring NCAA D3 membership. It doesn't mention anything about an invite from any D3 conferences. Isn't that a requirement to join D3 now?
https://regentroyals.com/news/2023/9/18/general-regent-university-athletics-pursues-ncaa-division-iii-membership.aspx

Yes, that is a requirement for the application to join D3, but my understanding is that application happens after the exploratory phase and before Year 1 provision begins. You can enter the exploratory process without a conference. So Regent essentially has 2 years to get a conference figured out. They will need an invitation from a conference by 2025-26 to being the actual membership process.

I only attended Calvin for 4 years so I believe I could play 1 year of college basketball, but so far Coach Sall has not dialed my number  :'(.

So what you're saying is not only do I need to worry about a slew of graduated and former Brits joining Trine's team, but I also need to worry about KnightSlappy showing up on Calvin's roster?!  :o

As a non-Calvin fan you would be overjoyed if that happened. I happened to observe a bit of Calvin's first practice today; I would be bent double over winded, vomiting, and probably injured in under 10 minutes.

If I can lift the veil here, Cortez Garland is apparently using his COVID year now after not playing last year and is joining Fred at Trine.

Looking like Trine will be very good.

Bingo!  It appears that Cortez Garland indeed will be on the Trine roster this season.  I did see something on Cortez's X (Twitter) account a few months ago that was re-tweeted on the Trine MBB account, but didn't put two and two together until I saw a photo of Cortez, Brent Cox and Ryan Preston participating in a student Read A Thon celebration at one of Angola's elementary schools.  My first thought this past summer was that Cortez was going to go to grad school at Trine and was going to be a student assistant coach, had no idea he had basketball playing eligibility remaining.  There is also a short clip of practice on the Trine Thuder MBB X account, and if you slow down the video frame by frame there is one spot where you can catch both Fred and Cortez on the court together (I beleive they were the only guys wearing warm up pants).

Good for Cortez for finding a way to play another year and for both for getting another year together.

Is the COVID year rule allowing 4 playing years (not counting 20-21) in 6 time years?  I think I'm past having to worry that Jamezell is going to show up on Trine's roster, right?

Who boy that game up in Albion January 13th is going to be heated!!

I choose to stay optimistic about the Brits, so I sure hope so!

I believe the rule (before COVID through a wrench into everything) was 4 seasons of eligibility to use in 5 years of enrollment. The clock paused if a student is not enrolled. I believe Jamezell Davis played three seasons at Albion (didn't play the COVID half year), so as long as he didn't stay in school for 2 more years, he is probably eligible to join Trine's team this season  ;D.
