Just received a personal email from Jason Baribeau that he has resigned as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Blackburn....

I feel bad about this, but past conversations with Coach Baribeau indicated there were problems between the program and the Administration...  I'm disappointed because I saw Blackburn play their best game of this season or probably the last 7 years when they beat Greenville 90-87... in that one, 6,7,even 8 underclassmen showed the potential to return BC back to a top 4 position in the SLIAC in 2015-16... it was all pretty much downhill in February after that... Chris A Davis left the school right after that game, a kid with double double potential any night.... then word on the street funneled to me that 2 more starters were not planning on returning next year... it sounded ugly....  Can only hope that Coach Baribeau gets another shot elsewhere... it sounded to me like the deck was stacked against him at BC....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Blackburn is a very confusing situation. They had a good women's coach a few years back who had a full roster of players, including some very good ones who made the program competitive. I recall that there was a problem at a game between the Blackburn and Fontbonne women (played at Fontbonne) which I don't know the details of, but if memory serves me correctly it involved fans, at least in part. Coach Baribeau also had lots of kids on the roster this past season and, as hopefan suggests, it seems like they were beginning to show signs of improved competitiveness. If athletics are supposed to help enrollment, then both the coaches fulfilled that aspect of the job description.

Of course mine are only observations from an outsider, so there is no way to know what other factors led to the departure of these coaches. I hope things will get better for both hoops programs at BC.

Just a note that Reagan Gym is undergoing an exciting renovation.  EC hoops will be playing on a brand new floor amongst 1000 seat-back bleachers:

Wow... looks very nice... will we lose the 'balcony' seats at the end of the court? ;D ;D..... These will be the first seat backs in the SLIAC!!!!  Now it's going to be harder than ever to get on the pass list....

The balcony will stay and will connect to the top row of seating. Since the playing floor is being rotated 90 degrees, the balcony will be an even better location to watch the game.

The catwalk going down the middle of the gym was also removed, so the balcony will be continuous instead of being in two sections.

^^^Thanks for having a Twitter account and keeping us old folks informed. +1

BunchTime

Been away for a while but still reading.  Agree about the Twitter account.  Love it.  I think every coach should have one in this day and age.  Plus, particularly at this level, it's great to keep the fans and students informed of the happenings with the program and new recruits.

A couple SLIAC/Webster tidbits...

My former Webster teammate and all-conference player, Kaniela Aiona, recently was named Menlo College head basketball coach.  Menlo is a NAIA school located in Northern California.  Very happy for the Big Wave.  He's stepping into a pretty tough spot, but I am confident he can succeed. Kaniela was previously working as an assistant at D2 St. Leo's for Lance Randall, a former Webster head coach in the late 90s.  Here is a link... http://www.menloathletics.com/article/5937.php

Another one of my former Webster teammates, Marshall Newman, who has been the assistant for the last 10 years at Lindenwood is in limbo right now due to head coach Brad Soderberg leaving for Virginia.  LU plans to announce a head coach on May 11th.  From what I hear, a ton of highly qualified candidates are in contention for this job.  I am confident my guy Marshall will land on his feet when the dust settles either keeping his same job at LU or another job.

Just thought I'd pass along for anyone who was interested.

^^^^Thanks BunchTime. I started following Webster hoops when you were a freshman, so I remember both Aiona and Newman.

I didn't know Soderberg was going to UVA -- I see it is as an assistant. Hope Marshall Newman is able to stay at LU.

Greenville always does a nice job putting up info regarding recruits on their site.... here are 5 names as of May 6.... some nice sounding guards, but GC desperately needs to find a little size to the roster....

Elijah Shaw
Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado
High School: James Irwin Charter
Position Played: SG/SF
Height: 6'3"

Accomplishments: 1st Team All-Conference, 2nd Team All-Area, Defense MVP, Regional Champions (team), National Honor Society, CHSAA Academic All-State (team), Student Council President

Coaches Comments:

Elijah is a great addition to our program.  We have been impressed with him both on and off the court throughout the recruiting process. He is a long and athletic guard/forward who can guard multiple positions and really get to the basket well.  Off the court, he is an excellent student and is involved in school leadership, most notably, being named the student council president.  We are excited to see how Elijah continues to develop in a college program.
===================================================================
Ricky Dunnavan

Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky
High School: North Bullitt
Position Played: SG/SF

Accomplishments: 1000 Point Club, All-Region 2nd team, 2-Time District First Team, Junior of the Year in Bullitt County, Brady Bunch Invitational MVP, Homecoming King 2015, 2-Time Student of the Month

Coaches Comments:

We are very excited about Ricky's commitment to GC!  Ricky is a pure shooter with deep range and great confidence in his shot.  He has the size and strength to be a solid wing defender at the college level.  Coming off a great high school career, Ricky has potential to be an elite shooter in our conference.  Ricky is a great get for our program and will fit in well at Greenville on and off the court.
=======================================================================
Jake Vanwey

Hometown: Sesser-Valier, Illinois
High School: Sesser-Valier
Position Played: Guard

Coaches Comments:

Jake is a hardworking player that will bring energy and a great attitude to our program.  He has been a part of a winning tradition in high school, going to the final four in state as a junior and winning two regional titles.  Off the court, Jake is a strong student that will represent our program well in the classroom.

=====================================================================
Jaden Greenwood

Hometown: Springfield, Ohio
High School: Shawnee

Coaches Comments:

Jaden is coming off of a high school career where he rewrote the record book at Shawnee high school.  Jaden leaves as Shawnee High School's all-time leading scorer and 3-point shooter.  His on the court success is a product of his great work ethic and determination to continually improve as a basketball player.  Jaden's work ethic on the court is matched or exceeded by his commitment to excellence in the classroom.  We are very pleased to add Jaden to our team next year!

Alek is a great three point shooter that has played in a high level conference in California.  Alek's playing experience in high school will help him greatly as he makes the transition to the college level.  Alek has a great personality and will be well liked on our team and on our campus.

Some FU News. A campus wide email was sent out to announce Asst AD and Head Basketball Coach, Anthony Hall, had submitted his resignation. Coach Hall's wife was  Dean at St. Louis Community Colleges. Accepted a Presidents position. I believe it's a school in Kentucky.

Tough break for the program. Coach Hall got the Griffins to the SLIAC championship game. Best of luck to the Hall family.

DIII Blackburn College (IL) has named Steve Kollar as their new head coach.  He replaces Jason Baribeau who resigned back in April.  Kollar was most recently an assistant Benedictine University (IL), and has also been an assistant at St. Francis (IL).  Since 2014, he has been involved with the Mercury Elite AAU.

Not much interest on the 'Ol Sliac board. Also wanted to mention that former Webster Head Coach Lance Randle, was named to the same position at D2 Lindenwood. Was HC at D2 St. Leo in the Tampa, FL area. Had to be for the money and not the climate. ;D ???

On a road trip out east to see relatives and old friends, actually saw LaRoche north of Pittsburgh and signs for several other D3's in Indiana, Ohio, and Pa. including Haverford yesterday... Will be up at RPI and Union on Monday, and finish up all the way over in Maine (UM Augusta anyone?).  1400 miles so far and wife not kicked me out yet!

Disappointed regarding departure of Coach Hall from Fontbonne... He really got things turned around quickly... My SLIAC morale is really down with 2 good guy coaches departed and another wishing he was.. Hope it kicks back up come September!    (Ahhhh... I'm sure it will)
