GoGheny,

I know that the Gators have been taking on a pretty brutal schedule the past few seasons and I was unfair to lump them into that group.  You are right about Allegheny taking on tougher non-conference foes.  And speaking of Westminster, that is my alma mater and I am glad to see them trying to rebuild that once proud program.  I was there in the early 90's when the Titans were an NAIA powerhouse.  I remember us playing Allegheny each year in what was then the battle of DIII's best vs. NAIA's best.  Those were some great games!!!

Anyways, the onus on making this conference more credible lies with the bottom 5 as Pat said.  Until they start becoming even the slightest bit competitive, I'm afraid our conference ranking won't improve all that much.

The karma is voted on by clicking applaud which gives positive karma or smite which gives negative karma.  Your karma rating is the number to the right.

My pre-season POY vote would have to go to Tristan Murray.  I know that Holmes has the ability to air it out, but I just think that Witt likes to pound the ball too much and Murray will have a big year.

I agree about the ranking of the NCAC.  With all of this talk about 'Gheny and OWU improving, they need to step up and start showing it in the non-conference games to start improving the respect given to this conference.  Still, the bottom 5 are no where close IMHO to competing with anyone outside of our conference and that will always hurt the overall appearance of the NCAC.

Wally, that is true about how we seem to never think a team will run the table every season and judging by how many times the champ actually does run the table in conference play, my money would have to go on Witt to do it.  Their game at Wabash will be the teller IMO.  If Witt gets by in that one, they should be in the driver's seat.  Wabash just has too many tough road games to get by unscathed and the same goes for OWU.  As for the COW, I definately don't see them winning in Springfield and other possible losses could easily come from the visiting 'Lil Giants (although I think this game will be a good one no matter who wins) and on the road @ Allegheny.  Wooster has had OWU's number the past few years and I don't think it will change this year either.  Allegheny is the wild card again.  When they won the conference 2 years ago, the schedule favored them then like it does again this year.

This year's  conference race has all the makings of being a dandy.  With 5 teams who could legitimately make a run at the title, I have a feeling that this thing won't be decided until late in the season.  Let's hope so anyways for the sake of keeping this board even livelier!

I would like to get back to talking about just who has the best chance of winning this conference.  Personally, I think that any of the top five in the coaches and media polls could make an argument in their favor.

I kind of agree with gobash83 with regards to Witt being the favorites.  Their offense is a scoring machine.  But BB90 also makes a valid point about the glaring weakness that is Witt's defense.

Looking at the conference schedules for the top 5, one would have to favor Allegheny.  They have Witt, Wabash, Wooster and OWU all at the swamp!  That could prove to be a huge advantage.  Out of the top 5 Wabash only has one home date vs. Witt and they are on the road @ 'Gheny, Wooster and OWU.  The Bishops also only have one home date against one of the other 4 and that is Wabash.  Wooster and Witt both have 2 home and 2 away.  Witt has Wooster and OWU home, while the Scots have Wabash and OWU at home.  The conference winner will definately have to hold serve at home, especially in the cases of Wabash and OWU and in their cases they will have to pull out at least 2 big road wins along the way IMO if they want any chance of claiming the NCAC title.  The Gators really have things in place, at least as far as the schedule is concerned, to sneak up on some again this year.

Agreed Seinfeld!!!

Posts like the battle at QB is a legit 4 deep and Lafitte will not be missed?  Wasn't it just 2 years ago when Lafitte was a true freshman, many Bashbackers were claiming that he had the potential to be as good as TS?!  And now that he's gone, its no big deal?!

You constantly nag about Schafer and how he is still unproven, yet, all Schafer has done in his first 2 seasons is garner all-conference honers in each of those 1st 2 seasons.  I failed to see any of the 4 legitimate Wabash QB's on the all-conference list.  Oh yeah, I know what is next to come out of the Bashbackers.  Schafer wouldn't have done it without Sutton.  And you know this how?!  So in the opinions of some Bashbackers, Wooster is returning a 2 time all-conference QB who is still unproven and Wabash is retuning zero all-conference QB's and yet they somehow have 4 legitimate starters.  Yeah, that makes sense?!

QuoteAnd geez, haven't we had this exact same discussion about Wabash fans every year for five years?
That's because you Wabash fans continue to act in this manner every single year.  You are quick to point out the weaknesses in other teams, but it seems like pulling teeth to get Wabash fans to admit weaknesses in their own team!

Just wanted to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Doug Schmeid.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you as you manage through these tough times.

What I can't understand is that it seems that every year Wabash faithful come into every season with unbridled optimism which is understandable given the recent success of your program.   This includes the year after you lost Knott and Short.  Those were huge losses and yet I still remember the Wabash faithful predicting that the defense would then lead them to a repeat of the conference championship in '03.  When that didn't happen, then it then turned to the senior leadership would bring back the title in '04!  So much for that as well.

My point is, the Wabash faithful seem to be never ending in their optimism entering every season and for some reason when supporters from other teams, heaven forbid, decide that they would like to show a bit of optimism towards their respective team, they are ridiculed about it by the ever optimistic 'Lil Giant faithful.

Wooster fans don't need to be reminded of the greatness that was Tony Sutton (Wally).  He was a talent that we may never see the likes of again and we, as Wooster supporters, were fortunate enough to enjoy watching his mastery on the field.  But he would be the first to deflect the praisie to the efforts of the team that surrounded him and that he might not have been as productive without every part of that championship team!

As for the optimism being shown on the part of the Wooster faithful, I say it is warranted.  There is no clearcut runaway conference favorite from what I can see.  Do the Scots have a lot of holes to fill?  Yes they do, but so do many other conference favorites.  Maybe not to the extent of Wooster, but that is what recruiting is for and an undefeated regular season and advancing to the 2nd round of the playoffs can't hurt in the recruiting process!  Personally, I think that Wooster will have a bit of a chip on their shoulders to go out and prove that there is life in Wooster football after TS!!!

krock,

I think you get funnier each time you do that?! ???

The Shafer comparisons never get tired!!!

Man, the '05 season hasn't even started and I already can't wait for Krock's lame imitation for the '06 Wooster player profiles!  After all, it will be the last chance you get to profile your favorite player!!!

According to Wooster's local paper, sophomore Amil Tinsley is leading the way so far to become the one to fill the huge shoes left by Mr. Sutton.  He isn't a shoe-in.  He has just performed the best through week one and will be playing with the 1st teamers to start the Black & Gold game tomorrow.  He is being followed closely by soph transfer De'Lano Boles (redshirted last year at Ferris St.), frosh Dustin Sheppard and senior Sean Anderson.  Looks like it could be shaping up to be running back by committee.

That's good to hear about 'Gheny going back to the traditional unis.  I always thought that the switch to the new unis was a mistake.

scotty and anyone else interested,

I was able to find a link to that article in the Wooster Daily Record archives:

scotty,

I had posted the link yesterday, but it was lost due to the changing of the Post Paterns forum.

One glaring thing that stood out to me in the article was the fact that Joe Kearney's replacement might be a freshman.  Either the kid is really good, or the Scots are really hurting at the defensive tackle position.

oldguy,

I believe that the NCAA did change the rules on 2-a-days to make it safer for the kids.  I'm not for certain, but I believe it's due to the increase in player deaths on the practice field over the past few years in all divisions.

Pat and staff,

I really like the new format.  It really looks top notch.  Nice job!!!
