The Pre Season Coach's Poll is out!

http://www.northcoast.org/sports/wsoc/2015-16/releases/PreseasonPoll

Denison
Allegheny
Kenyon
Wittenberg
DePauw
Wooster
Oberlin
Ohio Wesleyan
Hiram

It appears that Denison's returning "recognized veterans" hold the most promise to win the conference. Never count out Allegheny with Thiessen on the roster and although Romaine graduated from Kenyon, she didn't leave - she's the new assistant coach!. Wittenberg & DePauw never rest on their athletic laurels and can be counted on to unseat any rival. Wooster has a very large incoming class that could surprise everyone. Oberlin, under Coach Palmer, is gaining ground. Hiram has a new skipper and OWU looks to build back to prominence.

Let the fun begin!!!   ;D

#1
Well, the fun has begun in the NCAC. Consistent with its pre-season #1 conference ranking, Denison went 3-0-0 with wins against John Carroll, Mt. Union, and Hanover. Witt held its own as well, going 2-1-0 with wins over Fredonia St. and Pitt-Bradford and a loss to Thomas More. Wooster was the only other NCAC school to stay at or above .500, going 1-1-1 by beating Mt. Union, drawing Baldwin-Wallace, and losing to Carnegie-Mellon. Neither Witt nor Wooster have anything to be ashamed about with those losses.

Two other NCAC schools did get wins this week, with DePauw (1-2-0) beating Kalamazoo though dropping matches against Hanover and Calvin and Hiram (1-2-0) defeating Thiel but losing to Gettysburg and McDaniel. Also earning points was Ohio Wesleyan (0-1-1), which drew Washington & Jefferson while losing to Centre.

Three schools are still looking for points, with Allegheny (0-3-0) being unsuccessful in matches against Fredonia St., Rochester Institute of Technology, and Nazareth; Kenyon (0-3-0) losing to Ohio Northern, Hanover, and Mt. Union, and Oberlin (0-2-0) not gaining results against Case Western or Mt. St. Joseph.

This week will be a busy one as NCAC non-conference play continues. Some games of note include Ohio Wesleyan facing Case Western and Denison against Otterbein on Wednesday and busy weekends for Allegheny (against Wheaton (IL) and Ohio Northern), DePauw (traveling to Transylvania and Centre), and Witt against Case.

Good luck to everyone this week and hopefully, the conference can improve on its current non-conference record of 8-15-2.

Denison continued their winning streak against Otterbein, Baldwin Wallace, & ONU and leads the conference. A big test for the Big Red will be at Centre on Saturday.  Wittenberg goes 1-1-1 with the L being delivered decisively by Centre. Wooster plays 4 games in a short stretch and ends up 4-0-0 with an ending win against W&J. DePauw claws back to .500 with a defeat from Centre (ugly trend).

Hiram 1-3-0 started strong but ran aground against Mount Union, John Carroll, and Heidelberg
OWU loses 2 tight ones to Baldwin Wallace & Otterbein.
Allegheny finally scores & wins, but drops 2 more (1-2-0)
Kenyon reverses course and wins 4 straight!
Oberlin gains some points with 1 tie and 2 wins (Defiance & Waynesberg)

All in all, a better round of 18-9-2!

This coming weekend could be season defining moments for NCAC as conference play draws near!

The Big Red continue roll on! The win at Centre has promoted incremental notoriety & last night's game at Capital was another notch. With NCAC conference play beginning this week, Denison has certainly generated a lot of momentum.  Wooster & Kenyon continue to move into positive territory. Oberlin, Wittenberg, & DePauw, round out the middle. Hiram and OWU are struggling for points, and the biggest surprise is Allegheny.

As the significant part of non-conference schedule has been completed, I think Denison has shown itself to be the leader of the pack not just by record but also through quality wins against perenial NCAA tournament teams Centre and Hanover and typically strong OAC teams as well. However, I think that the rest of the conference is a jumble and it will start to sort itself out in conference play. Speaking of which, conference play to begin today with Oberlin at DePauw, Witt at Kenyon, OWU at Denison, and Wooster at Hiram. I think DePauw wins 2-0, Denison wins 3-0, and Wooster wins 2-1. The interesting matchup is Kenyon/Witt and I think the Ladies win 1-0.

Let the fun begin!

It'll be interesting to see whether the Big Red can manage to overcome the challenges posed by a Romaine-less Kenyon and a still (?) tough but 2-7 Allegheny squad. The last time the Big Red managed to beat Allegheny was all the way back in 2012.

In any case, the Big Red's 9-0 start to the season is certainly impressive; however, as a Kenyon alum, I certainly hope that the Ladies manage to spoil their season.

Before the second day of conference play begins, we have Denison, Wooster, Kenyon, and DePauw sitting at 1-0, Allegheny with no conference results, and Witt, Oberlin, Hiram, and OWU at 0-1. No surprises with the results (at least based upon my prognostication) though with margins of victory were a little off.

This week, Allegheny begins its conference campaign at Wittenberg while Hiram travels to Denison, Oberlin goes to Wooster, and Kenyon hosts DePauw. OWU has a non-conference match against Rochester to round out Saturday's slate.  I think Denison continues its winning ways by handily beating the Terriers 4-0 and Wooster should beat Oberlin 3-1. The ALL/WITT and KEN/DPU matches will be the more competitive and telling. I think Allegheny, while struggling so far this season, opens its NCAC account with a 2-1 win over Witt. The last two Kenyon and DePauw matches have been very competitive and I think this season's one is no different. However, in a mild upset, I think the Tigers beat the Ladies 2-1.

Good luck to everyone and may be have competitive and safe matches this weekend.

As day 3 of conference play begins, Denison, Wooster, and DePauw are sitting atop the table tied with 2-0-0 records. Kenyon is next at 1-1-0, Allegheny with 0-0-1, Wittenberg at 0-1-1, OWU at 0-1-0, and Oberlin and Hiram at 0-2-0 complete the table.

Tomorrow Denison visits Allegheny, Kenyon travels to Wooster, DePauw hosts Hiram, and Wittenberg goes to OWU. The interesting match up will be Kenyon vs. Wooster and I suspect that Kenyon bounces back from the loss to DePauw and defeats the Scots 2-1. In the remaining games, Denison, DePauw, and Witt should all have victories by two goals or more.

Good luck to everyone and may be have competitive and safe matches this weekend.

Denison escapes from 'Gheny in double over time, Kenyon knocks off Wooster, DePauw remains unbeaten. Wittenberg knocked off OWU.

Denison (3-0) (Still to play Kenyon, DePauw, and Wooster)
DePauw (3-0) (Still to play Wooster and Denison)
Kenyon (2-1) (Still to play Denison)
Wooster (2-1)
Wittenberg (1-1-1)
Allegheny (0-1-1)
Oberlin (0-2)
Ohio Wesleyan (0-2)
Hiram (0-3)

So, it seems that Kenyon has the easiest remaining schedule, yet they will need to rely on results elsewhere to clinch at least a share of the title. Gheny could factor into the title race with matches against DePauw and Kenyon remaining.

I agree that Gheny is at least a spoiler if not a wildcard in conference race after a gritty battle against Denison.

This week's midweek matchups mark the midpoint of the conference schedule. On Tuesday, Allegheny goes to Oberlin, Wooster visits Denison, and Hiram hosts Kenyon. On Wednesday, OWU plays at DePauw. I suspect that Gheny, Kenyon, and DePauw all win by at least 2 goals. Wooster will play Denison tighter, but I suspect the Big Red will control the game and win as well.

Denison beat Wooster, Kenyon beat Hiram both by identical scores of 2-nil.

Gheny tied Oberlin despite firing 27 shots, 1-1.

As a cold front moves in and we enter the second half of conference play, Denison and DePauw share the top of table at 4-0. Kenyon trails by a game at 3-1, followed by Wooster (2-2), Witt (1-1-1), Gheny (0-1-2), Oberlin (0-2-1), OWU (0-3-0) and Hiram (0-4-0).

Today's slate has DePauw visiting Wooster, Wittenberg hosting Oberlin, Allegheny at OWU and, the game of the day, Denison at Kenyon. I think the Tigers (new and old) each prevail by a goal over the Scots and Yeowomen respectively. Gheny gets its first conference win by two goals and, in a close battle, Denison takes the points over the Ladies by a goal.

Safe play to everyone.

The Ladies continue to play the perennial spoilers, fittingly ending their rivals unbeaten stretch, 1-0.

Congrats to the Ladies on a strong performance...and making the conference race even more interesting. DePauw leads the conference race at 5-0 with Denison and Kenyon right behind at 4-1. Witt is next at 2-1-1, followed by Wooster (2-3-0), Allegheny (1-1-2), Oberlin (0-3-1), OWU and Hiram at 0-4-0).

A majority of teams still have an opportunity to make the conference tournament. In the middle of the week contests, the Old Tigers visit the New Tigers, the Terriers go to the Gators, the Battling Bishops host the Scots, and the Yeowomen entertain the Ladies. I expect the Gators, Scots, and Ladies to win handily and, in a closely fought battle, the New Tigers beat the Old Tigers.

The first NCAA regional rankings were released this week and Denison and DePauw made the top 8, with Denison at 4 and DePauw at 5.  Congrats to both teams.
