Title: What's The Call?
Post by: JFPIV on June 19, 2018, 01:17:10 PM
This happened in my son's little league game last night.

Bottom of the 6th (which would be last at bats) in a tie game.  One out.  Runner on third.  There is only one umpire.

Batter hits a dribbler to first.  Umpire comes from behind the plate up the third base line to get a good look at the play at first.  As he does so the runner from third is coming down the third base line.

First baseman fields the ball and tags first (second out).  The runner collides with the umpire and stumbles.  First baseman throws home, catcher catches throw and tags the runner (third out).

Umpire lets the play stand.  The parents go BONKERS!

I can not find a rule anywhere, but I think this was the right call.

Correct?

I could be wrong but I agree that it is the right call.  Something about the umpire being part of the field and play continues, unless a liner hits them and causes a dead ball.  Interesting play.

Sounds right but the only person in the wrong was the umpire for being in the baseline.  If he was outside the baseline then it is the runner fault but I have to guess that the ump was the obstruction from the clues.

This is a case where the ump has to take the abuse as he (and I am assuming fa ts not in evidence) could have been a non factor if he was well positioned.

The umpire walked up the third base line, but I can't recall if he was in fair or foul territory.

I am not sure he knew as his attention must have been getting the call right at first.

That is the correct call. An umpire is "in play" when it comes to runners... they are both expected to avoid each other if possible.

The play sucks, but it's the rule.
