Rhodes wins 66-64. Tremendous b-ball game with many big plays. Avant was the star for sure, even on a bum foot! ;D

Classic basketball @ Millsaps this afternoon. Both teams - Millsaps and Rhodes - played at a high level which made it exciting for the pure fan. Stats were nearly identical for both teams except for rebounds, and the defense was intense throughout. Each team got big plays at monumental moments of the game.  Even when Rhodes got 2 huge free throws from Sarah Johnson with 4+ seconds left to extend the lead to 4 Millsaps never gave an ounce as they got a successful deep three 2.5 seconds later to close the gap to one before one more foul led to a final free throw to close out the Lynx win. Lauren Avant helped tremendously make the late game conversions for Rhodes that kept the Majors slightly behind.  I thought Millsaps' Morton played an outstanding game as well. She has a flair for the big dramatic play. But in truth all of the players in this game raised the level of their play for the spectators. This game was a beautiful wrapup for the opening SAA basketball season.

Great for the Rhodes Lynx being chosen to host this weekend against Lousiana College with Wash U and Texas-Dallas in the other Friday night game.  Know the folks in the American Southwest Conference are surprised they are sending two teams to Memphis, and not getting to host in LA. :o

So did the NCAA as the two ASC schools get sent to Rhodes - RHODES? - and Trinity's stuck with a trip to the west coast  :o
Incredible ain't it!  I had asked this question last night during Hoopsville as to whether Rhodes had a chance at hosting as a result of geography.
Geographic proximity.  It saves the NCAA flights because my favorite is Wash U, with LaCollege as the #2.

Rhodes:  from Wash StL   - 299 miles
              from LaCollege   - 394 miles
              from UT-Dallas   -  460 miles

IMHO, since HPU did not make it a Texas/Louisiana Thing (with UT-D, LaCollege, Trinity and HPU), they flew Trinity out.

The other limiting factor is who submitted a bid to host.  ;)

Congratulations to Rhodes on their victory over La College!

Great win for your program, and you get the the Lady Bears tomorrow night.

That WUStL/UTD game was a great one too!  The biggest lead by UTD was 6; WUStL was 5!

Saw both games @ Rhodes tonight. Two tremendously exciting 1st round games and it's certainly special for the host team to live to play another night!  Think both Texas-Dallas and Louisiana College represented their respective schools well tonight coming out on the short end. I really was impressed with the Comets and point guard Katie Korioth.  Natosha Gottlieb of Louisiana College was  outstanding at getting off her shot against Rhodes all evening. Louisiana College expended lots of mental energy to grab the reins from Rhodes in the latter stages of the 2nd half.  I honestly thought they had completed the victory  task when they went up 6 points & held Rhodes scoreless for 7 minutes.  Must also applaud the victors as both Wash U and Rhodes had the gumption and drive to get it done. Lauren Avant literally willed her Lynx squad to victory in the last 4 minutes. If I recall correctly it was Lauren 7-0 over La College in those critical 4 minutes.  The Lynx have shown tremendous resilience in both last Sunday's win over Millsaps & tonight in the late going against La College

It is always more enjoyable for a true basketball fan to witness games that are competitively played by all of the participants.  That was certainly the case tonight at Mallory Gym in Memphis.

One stat last night that helped Rhodes - turnovers committed.  Rhodes won and committed 15 turnovers; Louisiana College had 18.  Something had to give in this game as Rhodes came in as one of the better teams in D3 at avoiding turnovers while Louisiana College might be the best at forcing them - nearly 30 per game.

The Lynx' opponent Saturday night is totally different than LC. Think we'll see more of the true bigs playing tonight with 6'2" Barber and 6'3" Handelman who both played sparingly Friday against the smaller quicker LC team. Rhodes will probably pick up the game's pace a bit against Wash U.  The Bears will seriously defend and  out-muscle most teams in the paint.  Avant particularly and Johnson are quicker players than the Wash U guards and they will need to exploit this to their advantage.  The ability of Wash U to exert patience on offense and get 2nd chance points is a key to their style and success.  It will help Rhodes if they can effectively spread the floor and knock down some 3's because the Bears appear to be very stingy defending inside.

Look for a defensive, physical game played in the 50s.

Well earned Bears win tonight in Memphis 78-75 against an undersized but tenacious Rhodes team.  Good luck Washington University as you advance.  Congratulations Rhode Lynx on a fabulous season.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game @ Rhodes tonight.  Rhodes did a fine job hosting this weekend of games, and the Rhodes Women gave an admirable accounting of themselves in an entertaining game with Wash U.  I was surprised by the amount of scoring but I knew Rhodes would increase tempo to attempt to snap the Bears out of their comfort zone.  In the end, the Bears' superior size, solid defense and decent offensive balance earned them the win.  The Lynx never quit but they simply couldn't drain enough 3's to overcome Wash U.  Rhodes senior Sarah Womack went out on a high note with a 16-point effort.  Lauren Avant and Sarah Johnson were key contributors as well.  Avant had quite a weekend pouring in 59 points and pulling down 17 boards in the 2 games.  The SAA can be proud of the effort put forth by the Rhodes Lynx.

The 2 D3 tournament games @ Rhodes and the final game @ the SAA tournament the previous weekend truly showed what a talent Lauren Avant is on the basketball court. Congratulations to Avant & Rhodes.
