Any predictions on how the Johnnies will do next season? Will they use the playoff snub, & loss to Gustavus, besides being absolutely embarrassed in the second half by Whitewater as motivation, or will a deep playoff run & Stagg Bowl berth remain a hope & wish?
Their place will depend entirely if 2023 can be used as motivation/ "wake up call"- living off the reputation of past teams success is not a viable strategy.

I just want to take a moment to wish all you great members of the mighty MIAC board, and your loved ones, a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank you for always being so welcoming.
You are most welcome Ice.
As dysfunctional as this group is it's kind of like a very extended extended family- we've got our cousin Eddie's and that's alright that's what make this group work.
Let's all remember 57 on this day and pour one out for him. He was a gem and will be missed. RIP 57.

The Johnnies were blanked on *OTY awards--I wonder when the last time that happened was?
Especially when we have the top record in the conference. That said, Syverson was the only player on either side of the ball who stood out. If Steve Johnson weren't retiring I might have a problem with Gary not winning COY. He is certainly deserving, having beaten the winner.
ROR you know I love you like a brother but, you need to take off the red blinders. Johnson did more with less this year and deserves the award. The Johnnies had 6th and in one case 7th year (regular red shirt D2, COVID year, medical red shirt D3) players and they laid an egg. With this much experience and talent the coaching staff, especially Head Coach, needs to find a way to win. Motivate, putting people in positions to succeed, situational football ie:attempting FG on days when offense not crisp instead of getting stopped on 4th and short. Steve Johnson deserved the award in 2023, Gary did not. 2024 will bring new challenges, perhaps Gary can be deserving of the award next year. Go Johnnies!

Since we got embarrassed by Whitewater, but thumped Bethel, I'd prefer to see Bethel win, however I don't think Bethel has chance.

I'm afraid that UWW is going to expose the MIAC
The MIAC did not deserve 2 in the playoffs this year. Learning from your f&C|% ups usually sticks with the subconscious a bit longer, hopefully lesson learned.

Well there have been rumblings that a few MIAC institutions could be danger of dropping a lot more than just football...I've heard from different people at different times that no less than 3 schools could potentially shutter their doors in the not too distant future.

I have no insight into any of this, of course, but there are many financial storms to weather over the next few years so I'm not surprised to find people are talking this way.

I hate to be in the minority, but I don't mind the division structure.  I don't think it has any bearing on national competitiveness and it lets the less competitive teams avoid horrendous stompings.  NCC rose from almost rans in a conference of perennial national relevance bridesmaids to take the country by storm and now look like goliaths.  UMHB did similarly.  MUC has operated without conference peers for ages.  Only the WIAC has offered a conference with unusual depth beyond the same two teams.  I don't think the conference is key to SJU or any other school's success.  Look at Wartburg now.  It's not like the same ol' ARC is pushing them to their current heights.

The program is the key.  And I don't think a conference change or division reorganisation will change the fact that the defence was unusually porous this season and that the offence was a little pass-dependent.  I'm getting "baby with the bathwater" vibes.  The program just needs to lift.  We had an off year.  Poor discipline.  Some failed execution.  Unusual scheme weakness.  Nothing in the conference structure will address that stuff.

Anyways, I guess one guy had to say the opposite to keep the forum hot.
The undisciplined play & stupid penalties are what drive me nuts! Yes, we also had some poor situational football decisions made along the way. If these things continue to occur next year then the rumblings from the Grumpy Old Men segment of the fan base (I'm talking about old guys like me) will get louder. Will that be heard? I doubt it. Go Johnnies!

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps not the laughing stock but at least made the conference as a whole weaker than it has been in years past. Who all was involved in making the decision?
Begin your search in Northfield. Follow the leads you uncover along the way. Don't forget that voting members included institutions which do not have football programs.

Just so I'm clear, am I correct in thinking that it is hypothetically possible that a MIAC team could lose both non-conference games and all 3 non-division conference games and still play for a conference "championship" if they win their 4 divisional games? So, it would be possible for the MIAC "champion" to make the NCAA D3 playoffs with a 5-5 record.

There is no other conference in collegiate or professional sports that uses this method to render it's "top" teams....No other competitive endeavor that neuters the full conference schedule and only with special new math is 7-1 considered a worse record than 5-3.....Congratulations MIAC you have succeeded in making us dumber and undermined football (which was always part of the goal).
I think what everyone is missing is the fact that all MIAC teams get to participate in "Championship Week" ;)[**this is known as sarcasm**]

What will be interesting to watch during the off season is who SJU schedules for non-conference opponents in 2024.

You know it's the postseason when oldsju67 crawls out of the woodwork!

I guess I could go watch the BBE Jaguars play in the state semis next Saturday...
Carve out time in your schedule to watch the Dassel-Cokato Chargers vs Annandale Cardinals- both from the toughest 3AAA conference in the state. Last year's 3AAA champions New London-Spicer plays in the same conference. Great small town football. You'll probably remember the Dassel-Cokato coach from 20 years ago at SJU  ;)

I was never convinced the jays were in...  Our sloppy and undisciplined play caught up with us. hopefully this "snub" makes the coaches and  players hungrier.
SJU wants to be viewed as of the great d3 programs in the county. Time to get to work figuring out how to shore things up for next season.
Let's call this a "teachable moment". There are plenty of problems to be addressed moving forward. A good chunk of the coaching staff, as players, were on teams that made deep runs into the playoff and/ or won a Natty.
Every team in the conference circles the date on the calendar when they play the Johnnies. Lesson learned, every team in the conference is capable of beating each other.....be prepared. Play with intensity every down. Eliminate mental mistakes and penalties.
Wipe the slate clean and play Johnnie Football moving forward.

Let's say the Johnnies beat GAC but lose to Bethel in the championship game. I assume Bethel gets the AQ. Johnnies still 8-2, but now with a "better" second loss. Still 8-2, probably an even better SOS, still have two RRO wins. Do they get a bid?
This year, probably not. Other years, probably yea. This whole Pool C situation is like an episode of The Twilight Zone.

I was never convinced the jays were in... a 28 point blowout in week 2 and losing to an average and unranked Gustavus did us in. Our sloppy and undisciplined play caught up with us. If this team had got a playoff spot i would have been surprised with a win...hopefully this "snub" makes the coaches and  players hungrier.
SJU wants to be viewed as of the great d3 programs in the county..too 4 is where they expect to be...this team wasn't close. Time to get to work figuring out how to shore things up for next season.
The MIAC did not deserver two teams in the bracket this year.

Bethel will stomp GAC.

Curious why you think this? These two teams played close in Arden Hills earlier. Looks like the Gustie passing game is still clicking with 2 guys over 100 yds with Breitbach 200+.
Answer: Would you want to be a 18-22 year old young man playing to send off Steve Johnson with his last chance for a MIAC Championship and fall short of that goal? The Royals will be laser focused and will prevail by two or more scores.

Greg's take on initial Regional Rankings and how they effect the MIAC.
QuoteEveryone who was quick to dismiss St. John's as a playoff contender after their loss to Gustavus Adolphus may have left the party too soon. St. John's has an excellent SOS and if they can hold on to their ranked wins versus Trinity (this feels very safe) and Bethel (which will require Bethel to win the MIAC championship), the Johnnies, incredibly look more likely than not to be in the field. How's that for Johnnie Magic?
...
Pool C Watch Alert: Teams in the at-large pool will be hoping that St. John's picks up another loss either this week against St. Olaf or in the MIAC crossover week, probably against Augsburg. The Johnnies beat Augsburg 27-24 earlier this year, so this could be within reach. The best case scenario for Pool C teams watching the WIAC race is probably to be rooting for La Crosse to run the table. That will get Whitewater in the field through Pool C, but that's better than a WIAC tri-championship, where River Falls qualifies through Pool A, and Whitewater and La Crosse are both viable Pool C candidates. Unless Eau Claire or Stevens Point can do the unthinkable and defeat Whitewater, the Warhawks are getting in to this tournament.

The rare scenario where SJU has to begrudgingly hope Bethel wins the MIAC Championship  ;D
We are in the Twilight Zone
