You guys seem to have underestimated Berg. Beating JCU 10-0

Games are more than 11 minutes long, too, though. We'll see how it finishes.

Too bad for Heidelberg that the game wasn't called after 10 minutes, would've been a nice win for them.  Are they the Student Princes, the Berg, or another nickname now?

Wish I had everybody's hindsight. Was only making the point that several people felt JCU would dominate them again. Never said that was how the game would end.

They are still the Student Princes. It's you sMUg people who come up with other nicknames for them.

Actually, motorman, for a couple of years Heidelberg insisted people call its athletic teams "The Berg" -- that was not some Mount Union fan being smug. It was reality and part of the history of the department.

I knew that without the help, thanks. My son is a 2014 Berg grad. I was talking about "Heidi", "Wilma", and "Etta", not to mention them calling BW "the flaming pile"

Dr. Acula

I use Etta all the time.  It's not insulting.  Marietta themselves has long referred to their baseball program as the Etta Express.  Now flaming pile??  If the shoe fits...   ;D

reality check

Geez, I have used all those names at some point in posts and I'm not even from Mount Union.  I'm so conflicted.

Granted Heidi and Wilma are female names (which seemed to be the issue per your original post) but Etta is just an abbreviation. I would say that Heidi and Wilma are female names, they would also qualify as abbreviated names - its easier than typing out Wilmington or Heidelberg every time. What is the big deal with that? Besides you left out Jean Carroll.  8-) It isn't easy than typing out John Carroll - but it is more fun. ;D

And then there's Musky.  All you insensitive jerks shortening Muskingum to its female form.

And Crapital which we all know is the female version of Capital.

I actually forgot about Crapital! Was gonna toss in "ONU didn't get into (insert college here)" but left that off since I think ONU is a great school.

History time!
John Carroll, as a prominent priest in colonial America, was actually sent up to Quebec with Ben Franklin and Samuel Chase during the Revolution to try and convince the French settlers there (who were living under English control) to join the rebellion. While this mission ultimately failed, the people of Quebec marveled at the American priest, who they called Jean Carroll (the French version of John), and their support helped lead him to becoming the first catholic bishop of the US. Moral of the story, I take Jean Carroll as a compliment! ;D A way to honor the background of an important early American figure (And I'm sure the Jean part was honoring that, and not an attempt to feminize the name ;) )
The more you know!

a personal note of my visit to mt. last weekend. The game was a yawner but I had never heard the raider alma mater before and to say the least it was fantastic. I have heard lots of alma mater's the last 10 years, Akron's and Ohio's are pretty darn good and I thought the best. It is hard to beat "Men of Harlech" though. If that doesn't get you pumped for a game I don't know what will. I still remember the first time I heard that song. I am surprised more schools don't use that song, it is a great call to battle.

That's really their Alma mater?! That's awesome. The only place I've heard that song is the movie Zulu

You have 17 and a half hours to get your OAC Pick-Em selections in.

Let's pick careful out there.
Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

Bluestreak66 - I had never heard that before. It is very interesting (seriously). However, I am annoyed that a dig has been turned into a compliment! Back to the drawing board.   ;D

"Men of Harlech" is indeed a great Alma mater - and Zulu is the 2nd greatest movie ever (IMHO). "The army doesn't like more than one disaster in a day. Looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast." Don't know why but it is perhaps my favorite line from any movie.
