Is it just me or does Concordia and Horan have an unusual amount of weird and heartbreaking losses over the years? I can think of several against BU and SJU alone.

SJU has had the most headflippers with Concordia by far! I felt for Aurora yesterday, because that ending was so reminiscent of a few Johnnie victories clutched from the hands of defeat versus the Cobbers over the years. The only Bethel trainwreck I recall was the lost interception and TD due to CON players going on the field (penalty) to watch the end of the pick-six run, only to have Bethel score for the victory in the following closing seconds. Were there others versus Bethel I am not remembering?

In 2007 Concordia lost heartbreakers to both Bethel and St Olaf. Bethel game was a 45-48 3 OT heartbreaker in Moorhead. In 1st OT Bethel had a 4th and 9 where QB scrambles right and just before he is brought down he heaves it across the field for a first down. Game against St Olaf they lost 48-49. QB Jesse Nelson got stopped on the 1 inch line for the 2 point conversion with 30 seconds left. I am still convinced to this day he got in. That was a really good Concordia team that if they just make 2 plays they are 9-1 and a likely playoff team.

Can someone explain to me why this scheduling model was even necessary? Why can't there be a 9 week conference schedule with a round robin format. Everyone plays everyone. Champion gets the automatic bid. It truly does not get easier than that.

With this format, we are going to have the "championship" be 2 teams who have just played each other within the last 2 weeks essentially rendering the first game meaningless. This is coming up with a solution to a problem that doesn't even exist.

The bottom of the league should just put out a joint statement saying "We have no desire or intention to compete at a high level. Nor do we have a vision or plan to do so. This scheduling model gives us the opportunity to prop up our football program and give the illusion of success."

It can't be about the money.  They would have surely offered a pay-per-view option by now if that was the case.  They're afraid of giving potential playoff opponents more game film to review.

I think that's a really dumb premise for them to follow.
It's not very difficult to get film on any game if you ask around.
Besides, the opponents would have to PAY to get that feed!
All this would do is make it a little easier for opponents to get their hands on the game tapes.
The trade off would be more exposure, and it could make recruiting easier.

For any playoff opponent to get film would violate conference bylaws or any non conference agreements.

Russel, you might be able to defend Jim's knowledge of X's and O's, but there is more to being a successful head coach than that.  John's got charisma and the utmost respect from his players (among others)--Jimmy doesn't have those.

I am well aware of Jims strengths and weaknesses. And no he is not his father. No one is. John is a dynamic and special leader. There is a reason the man has nearly 500 wins. That doesn't mean Jim isn't qualified to be the next HC. I will support whomever is the next HC whether that be Jim, Gary, Brandon or someone else.

From the SC Times:

Quote“It comes down to execution,” defensive assistant Gary Fasching said. “We need to start executing better. It’s really that simple. The coaches need to coach better. The players need to play to play better. We have a lot of talent. We just need to start doing things better.”

And this is why Gary has 2 state championships and a national championship. Simple, direct, and true.

Whenever Coach Gagliardi decides to step aside, and I believe it's his decision to "retire" when he wants to, Gary Fasching is my choice to lead the program.
Now let's go take on the day!

... and by the way, it will pleasure me to no end when we get back to kicking the crap out of UST, Bethel and the rest of the MIAC.

What???  Jimmy G is my choice!! ;D

I know everyone likes to take their shots at Jim for various reasons, but make no mistake about it Jim Gagliardi is a very good football coach. I learned an incredible amount of football in the 5 years that I worked with him. He is more than qualified to be the next HC at SJU.

What would a win over SJU mean for Ramler should Gags ride off into the sunset? Or has the heir apparent in-house already been decided?

I'm told that a couple years ago when SJU was replacing Harrington as hockey coach John was questioning why they had put together a search committee to find a new coach.  I'm even told that John asked why the old coach couldn't just pick the new coach.  Gee...I wonder who he would like to appoint as his replacement?
What does that tell ya?  As great and successful as John has been it would appear he is lacking a little perspective.

I have a hard time believing that story considering I was on the staff at that time. Who would John say that to and who is your source? I can imagine him saying that tongue in cheek, but not being completely serious with either Tom Stock or another member of the athletic department.

Before this conversation on trick plays being put on film for Linfield to prepare for goes much farther, people need to understand how the film exchange in the playoffs works.  Linfield will not get the UST/Benedictine game due to the one game lag that exists on exchange after the first round.  The NCAA Games Committee rep assigned to each playoff game is given 3 game films from each of the teams playing the opposite game; as an example the rep at the UST/Benedictine game had the last 3 Linfield games and the last 3 Cal Luth games.  When Linfield won, their 3 films were given to the UST staff by the rep.  Obviously the game being played the same day is not available or provided, thus the one week lag.  So if Linfield is preparing for trick plays it is doing so without the benefit of seeing the film.

This process continues throughout the playoffs; if you are fortunate enough to make the Stagg Bowl (which we were able to do twice at SJU while I coached) you don't get the semis film from your opponent.  In our case, not seeing Mount Union totally destroy teams in the semis did not hurt us.

Redtooth -- I am not sure if this is accurate anymore now that teams can exchange video over the Internet. I know that when possible, teams exchanged video on Sunday night last week, when the bracket was announced, rather than by Fedex.

That is correct Pat unless something has changed in 3 years. Previous 2 games are given to the winner at the site and then the teams are to find a mutually agreed way to exchange previous game. Really pretty simple with todays technology.

Re video exchange: All games are on a conference server via dragonfly storm software. All conference teams have access to all the games at this point in the season and will for the duration of the season. You can bet that the week 11 opponent has all 9 prior games being scouted.

Re playoff video exchange: Last 3 games are traded via method approved by both teams in first round. 2nd round and beyond the two previous games are given to the winner at the conclusion of the game. The most recent game is typically overnighted.

Re getting extra video: Conference teams are not allowed to share ANY video outside of the conference of any playoff teams.

Re holding plays or schemes back: Doesn't happen. Not at this level. Teams are too good to hold things back. Maybe a coach can get away with it at the HS level but not at the college level. It is hard enough to win games with the whole assortment of plays and schemes.

Pick'em's are up..

a couple of notes:  I put the line at 4.5 as I see the Tommies winning 24-21 on a late field goal, or 28-23 with the Johnnies kicking 3 field goals and a too little too late TD.

from Gene's blog over at tommiesports.com yesterday "St. John’s doesn’t permit live videocasts of football."  We had a discussion with VOJ less than a year ago, and he was under the impression that the radio contract did not prevent video webcasts, so maybe something has changed?  Or maybe the Johnnie administration is worried about losing attendance if they were to videocast?  Does this policy make sense to anyone?

My opinion on the video webcasts has a couple parts to it.
1.  I think there is a concern about a drop in attendance.
2.  I think John and the coaching staff are worried that it will allow teams to get additional scouting on them and are also worried that teams might have way to record the live stream.  I've got to believe that there is a way to record a live stream although I don't know if MIAC and other D3 teams would have software or technology to do it.
3.   I also believe that live video streams could be a fabulous marketing tool and revenue stream for SJU.  I gotta believe that people would pay up to $5 bucks to watch a game.

Again...these are only my opinions.

Wow. That's a rare bit of paranoia coming out of the Johnnie camp. I thought they were immune to such feelings.
1. Fact
2. Fact
3. See reason #2. The potential $3000 made from the video stream isn't worth letting the whole west region gain access to every single game come playoff time.

Not a whole lot to gain for the program to stream games. Some may call it paranoia, others call it being protective of the program.

The problem is the weight room.  Look at the transfers. The kicker went from 170 last year to 210. The receiver from 175 to 190.  What if a DB goes from 170 to 185, a QB from 190 to 210-220 and offensive lineman picked up 30 pounds.  They need to incorporate what these kids are doing to prepare for a year from now.
[/quote]

I don't quite understand your assertion here. If you are saying the coaching staff needs to take a look at where some kids might grow and develop and anticipate position switches then I can assure you that already happens. At least half a dozen kids every year switch positions in order to try and get them on the field or provide better depth. The gaining of 20-30 pounds in between seasons also has little to do with whether or not someone can play.

Since 2003 we've been an above average to good team.  Where are the athletes?  What has happened?
Now to truly answer your question, part of the "problem" lies in recruiting a national championship level QB to SJU. There are one of two ways that it is going to happen. Either 1. A DI or DIAA bounce back kid ala Ryan Keating or 2. Getting a great local kid to spurn other scholarship offers to come to SJU ala Linnemann, Denne, Koefed. All 3 of those guys grew up within 30 miles of SJU. There has not been a great local kid for SJU to even go after the past 5 years. Hence the QB debacle of 2008.

There was a QB in the MIAC that some would consider pretty good from Watkins, MN (~20 miles from SJU, according to Google Maps) that was a senior in '08.

Shane Henfling was a nice MIAC QB who was from the area you are correct. He did not have a desire to sit behind Koefed for 3 years and ended up having a good career at Carleton. That being said he was not an elite level QB.

SJU fans are so spoiled it is incredible. They do not realize just how hard it is to maintain the level of success that the program has over the last 15 years. Lets recap 2004-2009

2004- 7-3 with those three losses by a combined 5 points
2005- 11-1 MIAC champs. 2nd round playoff loss to UWW
2006- 11-2 MIAC champs. Lost in West Region Finals to UWW
2007- 10-2 - Lost in 2nd round to Central
2008- 8-3 MIAC Champs. Lost in 1st round to UWW
2009- 10-1 MIAC champs. Lost in 1st round to Coe

By my count that is a 57-12 record with 5 NCAA playoff appearances, 4 MIAC championships, and 1 West Region finals appearance. Not too bad my friends. Ask PLU of Rowan if they would like to have such a terrible drop off from their national title runs.

The other "problem" is that Blake Elliott no longer wears a SJU uniform. He was that good. Now had Eric Decker not gone to that Gophers camp and gotten an offer we most likely are not having this conversation. One elite level skill player hides an awful lot of mistakes and inadequacies.

SJU vs Northwestern is happening. Mail it in. I 100% guarantee it.

As much as we might lament this "soft" type of schedule, the reality is that there isn't much benefit to playing 2 tough non conference games. The NCAA has made it clear that it won't really reward teams that play a difficult schedule. It is much more important to go 10-0 or 9-1 with a "soft" schedule than to risk being 8-2 with a more difficult schedule.

SCSU will never be on the schedule. There is nothing to be gained from that matchup for either program.
