Agreed....So DeMello is still playing? I was hoping you would say that because the kid was a stud and he was one player I always felt bad for with that injury in 2012 in his Senior year...Really liked his game....How bout Ryan Caruth? Did he ever play....I can think of a few others...Cannot remember the kids name but the tall blond striker who was nasty...anyhow

DeMello is not paying anymore. Back stateside.

Yes it is time again for notes on a scorecard from a pundit who was 1 for 5 on his Saturday predictions.  Most important game for the LL and its NCAA prospects was a UAA game in Rochester between UR and UC.  Why?  Because it shows how far LL teams have to go to catch the elite this year.  UC destroys UR in first 20 minutes, a team that decimated RIT and tied one of the league favorites Hobart away.

This might mean something or it might mean nothing. Just to play devil's advocate, in 2010 we (SLU) beat Houghton. Houghton beat St. Bonaventure. St. Bonaventure beat Cleveland State. Cleveland State beat Akron. Does that mean we were better than Akron in the year that they won the NCAA championship? I don't think so. The results, while on the surface may seem troubling, aren't as clear cut as you make them out to be. That being said I do think the LL has gotten a bit weaker overall since my time. I might be biased though.

Do you think Wheaton will cancel their games this weekend or will they go on and play?

Slightly related to the UMB fiasco is something that illustrates the problem with PKs deciding who advances.

One of the philosophies behind a red card is to give the offending player's team a direct disadvantage in personnel for the remainder of the game. Does no one else find it incongruous that said disadvantage expires in PKs - especially in this specific case where UMB was playing TWO men down until PKs?

I can obviously see the counter-argument here; if someone's red comes as a result of a second yellow, should that team really have to go 5-on-4 in PKs? But perhaps in a situation where a team has drawn TWO reds, they ought to be at some sort of disadvantage in PKs, no?

The game is over at the end of overtime though. PKs are just a tiebreaker for tournaments. It goes down as a tie on the scoresheet. The disadvantages become irrelevant because the game is technically over.

Question for all the D3 historic junkies out there:

On paper, when was the last time we saw a team end the season with such an impressive on-paper resume as Chicago had this year? (Undefeated; .971 win%; .642 SOS; 8-0-1 RVR)?

SLU in 2011, 16-0-0 regular season, 4 top 25 wins.

Good times, good times.

They haven't been scheduling as much games in recent years.  I'm not sure why.  They've left UofR off the schedule the last 2 years, which was always an annual non-conference matchup.

More like UofR left SLU off the schedule.

ECSU continues to play a very poor possession game!!

That's because they don't play one. It's more of a soak pressure, play ball high and wide and whip it in for the cross with midfielders and forwards streaking in to get on the end of it type of system.
Yeah... so tell me something I do not already know!?

Your posts make it seem like you expect them to keep possession when they're explicitly told not to play that way by DeVito, that's all. While it would be better if they do that, he doesn't put in the players necessary for that to happen. He'll leave more technically sound players who can keep possession and hold it up in favor of players who can run around a lot, even if it means leaving the defense exposed. It's very much a work hard and play rather than a work smart, work hard, and play type system.

I'm sniffing a bitter parent.....

Nah. Just a brother that happened to play for SLU, which instilled a much different, and even antithetical, play style. While fitness was important it wasn't the main thing that would get us on the field of play. I don't think I'm spouting any untruths though, especially considering I've seen them in person and have heard first hand about the instructions they're given.

SLU and Oswego 0-0 at the half on what appears to be a beautiful afternoon in Canton, NY.  A few chances for both sides. The Saints seem to be resting a bunch of starters (Augustine, Bunton, Suitor, etc.) in anticipation of tomorrow's tilt with Cortland.  SLU had a couple of shaky passes in back, but Oswego could not capitalize.  I look for SLU to flip the switch and get it going in the second half.

I just do not agree with this approach by SLU's coach. You never rest starters before the game begins against anyone. That alone is sending a message to your team that you are playing a weak opponent and they might as well take the day off. Always start your starters and let them get a quick lead then you REST them. I believe he got burned doing this last year as well and he will get burned again doing it.

Normally I would agree, as I felt the same last year.  But in recent years SLU has been bitten by the injury bug pretty hard.  The last 3 seasons have seen players drop like flies.  I think this approach is two fold: keep players fresh for conference play and also reduce risk of injury come tournament time.  Last year Ryan Grant went down early in the season and didn't return until half way through.  Dede suffered an injury in the LL tourney and was largely ineffective throughout the NCAA tournament.  Let's also not forget that 2014's leading scorer, Rob Brandell, missed the entire season due to a broken leg.

Or way back in 2011 when 3 of our starting forwards had torn ACLs. Or in 2012 when DeMello got an injury which left him out of the NCAAs.

More of the same from Eastern! Unbelievable! They just cannot maintain any possession!  some of the more experienced players playing poorly!   Eastern was fortunate to hold a very good technical team to a tie.  It was the Cardinals first game of the season, if this Cardinal team had a few games behind them it would have been loss #3 for ECSU.

The problem is that DeVito doesn't play the possession game and has no desire to even try. He'd rather play players that can run forever and work hard. Working smart isn't something he seems to favor. Most of the time he wants the ball sprayed out to the wings by the center mids to eventually be swung in for a cross. If they try and play it around and end up losing it. He'll get angry about that instead of encouraging them to play it around a bit. Hes got some players that can play and possess a good touch, but he'd rather play inexperienced freshmen who can run around a lot instead.

9 straight shutouts(2nd longest streak if my research doesn't fail me)
I'm not sure that's correct.

Here is the article. It is Consecutive shutouts to start the season. Article is written in 2013.

Ahh well you should have specified it was shutouts to the start of season.

But that said, I know first hand that the vast, vast majority of these young men care far more about the relationships they've built with their teammates and overall team success.  I would bet money that any player who wins these awards would give up every single accolade in exchange for a national championship.

True. But damn it would be nice to tell people you were an All-American in college. First Team regional All-American doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
