The guy grabbing his crotch should be, at a minimum, not allowed to travel to NC.

As others have said, there is something going on at Amherst that isn't "normal." Even if the opposing fans were giving the players the business, it's a very strange reaction after punching a ticket to the F4 to go over, as a team, to the opposing fans like that. It's definitely a culture thing. Us vs. Everybody, chip on your shoulder, constantly chippy in your style. That's all fine... Until you channel that into highly inappropriate and unsportsmanlike behavior.

With all of that said... I know folks feel strongly on here, especially those that have noted this culture and its problematic (at times) results. But I don't see a coach getting fired for that display. First off, there's another side to this in terms of what was going on with those fans. This wasn't done in a vacuum, I'm sure. There's no excuse for it, but I'd appreciate hearing what sparked that stuff.

Agreed.  I don't there is any chance Serpone gets fired or even "a stern talking to"....as though he doesn't absorb and dismiss the latter multiple times a game.

And you're also right that they likely were responding to some stick from the Midd crowd.. But the risk with that is each and every instance gets explained away.  There's always an apologist at the ready to compartmentalize anything negative as aberration and collude with a narrative that Amherst actually holds the rightful grievance as the ultimate victim of unfair targeting.  Rapal was cited for his behavior in the 1st round match.

400+ programs....and we're supposed to believe that it's a total coincidence or unfair targeting that we're yet again talking about Amherst coach and player behavior.
somebody had posted NCAA rules on straight reds for players abusing officials- not sure how this hasn't carried over to the sidelines

The bench decorum was a point of emphasis for officials this season... we really need to hold these programs accountable.  Not even sure what the governing body will do in this case, but something needs to be done.  This year was a chance for us officials to curb this mindset/behavior.

Coaching and Team Area Decorum. Coaches, players and bench personnel must behave in a responsible and professional manner. Officials will focus on enforcing good sportsmanship and a high level of decorum within the coaching and team areas. "Over the top" unprofessional behavior includes actions which show a clear lack of respect for game officials or the opposing team. Officials are reminded that they are expected to punish this type of behavior.

Hopkins92 might be able to answer this one...

What was the OT format in 80s and 90s when tournament games went to 4 OT?

Was it 2 5min OT fully played and if no winner a second set of 2 5s?

Luck absolutely plays a role; hosting/playing surface, potential paths to the final 4, injuries, weather,  etc.

Throw in late equalizers/winners and even officiating (human error).

Several posts about officiating and quality or lack there of; most of the officials at this time of year are D1 or very high level D2/D3 with decent resumes.

However, much like national powerhouses, they too, are prone to an off day...

Williams 6th 0-0 tie on the season sets an NCAA record. (previous was Drew in 2014).

Not surprisingly, they have also passed the record for ties in a season (9), with 11.

Chicago
F&M
Kenyon
Amherst

Chicago over Amherst

Won't be shocked if Rowan beats Stevens or Catholic over CNU

NJAC still gets minimal love, but they need to stop playing bottom of the barrel schools that bring down their SOS/OWP.

Wonderful finish for the winner. The moment the ball sat up for the Amherst player I was like "he's gonna drill that far corner."

The build up by Chicago just moments before...

Great winner for sure

At what minute was the play that some have claimed to be an intentional handball? I'd like to take a look at it for my own curiosity.

35th min... you're going to get a massive split in terms of a live time ruling.  Center ref could justify his decision either way.  Is it by the book? is it game management? Is it ego? combination?

We have the benefit of replay and terrible angles on live stream.   Definite potential for DOGSO-H, but this should only called when the ball is actually going in the goal.   NCAA does not differentiate for "last man", and even in this case, the GK is still in position to make a save.  This is such a grey area and VERY close to the 4Ds.  Is it in fact, OBVIOUS?   Refs are mic'd up and have 4 various angles on open communication with time to discuss to get it right before the restart, but it ultimately falls on the center official from the information collected.

When you get to Elite 8 at D3 level, most officials are D1/Pro/Semi-pro experience.   Have faith they will get it correct.

I only caught the second half of the Tufts/CONN game.  Is this archived anywhere to watch in its entirety?

St. Olaf has a very cool hype video.

It's brilliant!

If only it opened with chants of OLAF OLAF OLAF  OLAFFFF and continued throughout...

The RC would've been for DOGSO ... but defenders in front of him.

By definition, DOGSO would not have defenders in front of him.  You take into account, the number of Defenders, Distance to the goal, Distance to the ball, and Direction of the play.... also known as the 4D's

There was maybe 1 or two defenders behind the ball.  Think one may have been tracking another player, but nonetheless.

Keep in mind that the foul occurred within Messiah's half.    Where DOGSO is committed matters as well.  If everyone was where they were but 25 yards out, then I think a case for a red would be legit. So think this fails the distance test.

The man was on the dribble, and he may have been trying to pass the ball.  Or it could have been the result of the foul.  Going by memory now.

And finally, yes it was going "toward goal" but as I mentioned ... distance.

By the Law, if anyone one of those is in question, there can be no red card.  Think the first two Ds would fill me with enough doubt.

Yes, yes, yes but what makes this so interesting is that the 'keeper is behind the player in possession. If a player gets dragged down from behind at midfield with no defenders to beat except the 'keeper it's a RC, even though the distance is great. So what happens when you drag down a player from behind with only one defender to beat, and not even beat, just hit a decent ball on frame over his head when the 'keeper is behind you?

Even if this happened in Kenyon's half, there were about 3 defenders within close proximity to the ball.
I do not understand why the ref stopped the clock.  In that situation, you don't award the losing team the benefit of time.  You simply keep it running (at your discretion) under 5 min mark.

Note: Unfortunately, I didn't get to officiate any tournament games this season due to injury, but was on the 2019 Elite 8 match crew; Tufts v Conn...

POOL C is already filling up quick.

Amherst, W&L, Montclair St, Ohio Wesleyan
Three NESCAC (likely)
Washington/Chicago/NYU/Emory - Washington could finish as low as 4th with a loss to Chicago.  Remaining 3 are locks)
Two Centennial (likely)
Otterbein (I believe JC had tie-breaker, but even so, JC would be a lock as well).
WPI

Going to be rough for the last 4 in

Goal kicks changed a few years ago and it is working it's way through the levels. I know at the youth level they have toyed with adding it (tough, because one year I am begging my players to get out of the box and we have numerous delays when the kick is touched inside or doesn't get outside; suddenly the next year we tell our players to ignore everything we have taught them).

Goal kicks can be touched by the defending team inside the box, but NOT by the offensive team who must remain outside the box until the ball is initially kicked (if I remember the rule well enough; I think I am going to try and use this "free" time to start getting some of my coaching certifications).

Keep in mind, if the GK or defender plays the ball quickly while the attacker is in the process of retreating but has not yet left the penalty area... the ball can be intercepted.

Ratzan with a great cross which was completely missed by the Amherst CB, Jacobs all alone in the middle with the finish. 2-0 and that seems to be curtains with 16:59 left.

Questions over handball, and it looked like it was from the video. What's the "review" process if they don't check the goals when they go in? Seems like a gap in the process if I'm understanding this correctly.

It's not quite VAR for clear and obvious errors.  You only check for 3 things on video replay, and I'm not certain any d3 schools utilize this even after inception from a few years ago.
-Goal in or out
-review for a fight to identify players involved
-identify players for discipline
