Welcome to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference message board.  history major has volunteered to help with this board.

The SCAC is a multi-region conference in baseball in the eyes of the NCAA and as listed in the 2005 Championship Handbook.

http://www.ncaa.org/library/handbooks/baseball/2005/2005_d3_baseball_handbook.pdf

Centre, Millsaps, Oglethorpe, Rhodes and U of the South are located in the South Evaluation Region.

DePauw and RHIT are located in the Mideast Evaluation Region.

Hendrix, Southwestern and Trinity are located in the West Evaluation Region.

Welcome aboard, SCAC.  The nice thing about the southern latitudes is that we have games starting in 4 weeks!

PLAY BALL!

You're the man, Ralph!  I'll try to keep the discussions on this board going.  Of course TU Tigers RULE, but there's always good competition from Millsaps and Southwestern.

Anybody out there got predictions for this season?????

historymajor

Any reason that no SCAC teams got any love in the first pre-season poll?
Trinity was 32-12, Southwestern 29-12, Millsaps 27-17, and DePauw 29-14... come on somebody deserves ranking!

SCAC should be very competitive this year.

East:

RHIT is always good and will look to end their SCAC run on a high note. Return a wealth of talent on the offensive side and on the hill.

DePauw returns basically their whole team and has something like 10 senior starters! Has to be the favorite to win the East.

Centre made huge improvements last year and with added pitching can surprise some people.

Sewanee has some good seniors but the loss of Shackleton will be tough to deal with...

Oglethorpe was a disaster last year but has some individual talent.

West:

Millsaps was loaded last year and with the loss of Wetzel (Draft) and Garner (Graduation) it will be tough to repeat. But they always seem to have some of the best athletes in the SCAC.

Trinity is loaded with pitchers...some which won't see the hill until tourney time and they could crack any rotation in the conference.

Southwestern has talent all over the field...draw out of a hat between the big 3...

Rhodes is competitive but will find it tough sledding to crack the top 3. Move to the east next year will help.

Hendrix is young and is in the same boat as Rhodes...

Thoughts....???

Dirty... nice job summarizing the SCAC!  Glad to see someone (else) is that interested.  Do you really think that RHIT will get some sort of bounce out of the their lame-duck season?  It would be interesting, but I think DPU will have something to say about that.  I, too would think that that div would be between the two of them.

I don't have a real good read on the TU (pitching) situation....  I think Millsaps will be tough if they can replace the studs.... and SW is always solid...

You comments?

Dirty_South

RHIT will look to 'STICK' it to the SCAC since Coach/AD Jenkins is the man responsible for getting them out the SCAC. He has been complaining about the conference the day they entered. But I agree DePauw is probably the favorite to win the East.

The West is a crap shoot between the top 3 teams....They'll battle it out for the regular season crown and then anything can happen in the Tourney. I have been following SCAC baseball for 5 years and Trinity has always had the best pitching top to bottom, But with the 6-team bracket in the tourney sometimes they have had the matchups work against them. I would say TU is the preseason favorite to win the West and the SCAC with SW right behind them...

Its amazing b/c basketball season is just starting to get good and baseball starts in about a month....gotta love DIII athletics...

historymajor

Hmmmm... interesting take on coach/ad at RHIT... I had heard that he was the guy behind leaving the SCAC, but you're the first to confirm it.  Seems he felt that RHIT would never 'dominate' the SCAC with the likes of TU, SW and MC... so he opted to go find greener pastures... all that crap about extensive travel bothered me anyway... now I get it.
Do you think that rumors of Hanover joing the SCAC have any credence?

Ralph Turner

Dirty South, that is a pretty strong allegation you make about the RHIT AD.  Do you have any other documentation?  Are you an official at an SCAC member institution?

He is the baseball coach, but he is also responsible for the success of 19 other sports.  Travel may be a big concern for the coaches of the other sports, especially when competition is available without plane rides to San Antonio, Jackson or Atlanta.

Dirty_South

I don't think its a serious allegation. Its not like he did anything wrong. I'm just saying the AD is the man who makes those kinds of suggestions to the powers to be....right? Ultimately the President and Board make the final decision but the AD has to report about the state of athletics and I guess from his standpoint they would financially be better off and I guess be more competitive because they are palying teams in their region?. Yes, he is in charge of 20 sports and it makes sense that they play in a closer conference with less travel. The fact that he also coaches baseball and not basketball is why I brought it up in this forum.

I know from a baseball standpoint he is at a disadvantage from playing in Indiana. I mean TU and SW have decent baseball weather in Texas where he has to deal with frozen turf until March. He does not make that fact hidden....

Ralph Turner

Dirty South, I understand your point about bringing the discussion to the baseball board.

As for being an Indiana school, they are facing a cold weather disadvantage early in the season, but they should be in shape by the tourney in late April.  I looked at the schedule of Anderson in the HCAC.  They go to Port Charlotte FL for "Spring Training" 2 weeks later than RHIT does.

I do have problems with the huge gap between the post-season tourney, both the SCAC and the ASC, and the NCAA Regionals.  The ASC added another round of playoffs to decrease the time interval to 1 1/2 weeks from 2 1/2 weeks.

This should be another good season.

Good luck to the SCAC!

I wouldn't call that a confirmation. It's just a post, there's no reason to lend it any more credibility than your own posts.

Glad to see this board started in support of the SCAC baseball players.  I can't say that I'm an insider with all the scoops on Millsaps baseball but the impression I'm getting is that they will once again have a very solid team.  I thought they had a lot of talented younger players last year who performed well when they were able to get on the playing field.

One player they won't have to replace is Garner Wetzel.  SCAC pitchers will be disappointed to hear that he is back for his senior year.  I know I don't have the story exactly right but it was discovered that he needed surgery (on his throwing arm I think) so he never signed with Colorado.

Is that right about Wetzel??? If that is true I would say  they are the favorite to win the SCAC again....I know one man doesn't make the team but he makes that lineup scary, not mention his solid defense....

Can anybody also confirm this?

historymajor

Wow... some news about Wetzel....  hope that doesn't mess up his chances for going pro eventually...  Begs the question though...  when someone gets drafted and gets to the point of leaving the amateur ranks, under what circumstances can they 'come back' to play in college like Wetzel is planning to do?  In football and basketball when they 'declare', it's very difficult to get a 'do-over'... anybody out there that can enlighten me on how exactly this works???
