Men's soccer / Year-round college soccer season?
July 21, 2014, 12:49:07 PM
SI is reporting that there is a very serious proposal to move men's soccer to a split fall and spring schedule. The advantages are argued to be that almost no weeknight games would be required, and players would have more time to heal. The earliest this could start would be 2016.

Two questions: would the women likely also make the change? Would the change likely be applied also to d3?

Pro ball / Scoring Questions
October 20, 2013, 07:24:26 PM
A head-scratcher to me: in the final Tigers game of the season :(, Drew Smyly threw all of two pitches. (I'm totally p.o.ed at Leyland's underuse of Smyly, who I think may be the most valuable member of the bullpen, but that is a different rant. ;)) The batter he faced reached base on a rare error by Jose Iglesias; later scored on Victorino's season-ending grand-slam. Smyly was charged with an earned run - how can that be? (If Iglesias makes the play, that would have only been the second out - no realistic chance of a DP - if that matters.) Since the error did not avoid ending the inning, I understand the runs being earned - except shouldn't it be 3 earned runs, 1 unearned on the Grand Slam? Seems totally bizarre that Smyly could be charged an earned run for a guy who reached base on an error (though if all 4 runs are earned, who else could it be given to?); can anyone clarify?

General Basketball / Best M/W combined teams
March 22, 2012, 01:09:33 AM
I had a thread along these lines for a few years, but no one posted for some time; it must have disappeared in one of Pat's occasional 'clearing out the cobwebs' moves!

Thread rules:

At least one of the teams must be IN the top 25 (so CNU, despite both teams receiving votes, is out).

MANY schools would outvote some of these teams, but if your 'other' gender received no votes, you don't qualify.

My thread; my rules! :D

But what sort of fan would I be if when IWU FINALLY tops the list, I don't resurrect the thread?! 8-)

1. IWU (men 551, women 625) 1176
2. Amherst (men 458, women 550) 1008
3. UWW (men 625, women 68) 693
4. St. Thomas (men 59, women 577) 636
5. Hope (men 469, women 51) 520
6. UWSP (men 41, women 313) 354
7. WashU (men 104, women 211) 315
8. UWRF (men 62, women 52) 114

General football / 'Bounties' for Injuries
March 09, 2012, 05:05:59 PM
I've finally gotten around to reading up on the Saints (especially Gregg Williams) long-standing paying of bounties for injuring opponents. This is WAY beyond appalling; it is, literally, criminal. Surely it is a major felony in every jurisdiction in the country to pay a person to injure a third person. Williams will (according to SI speculation) probably receive an 8-game suspension. May I suggest that he (and perhaps others) should be banned for life AND receive prison time.

I'm generally leery of legal authorities getting involved in sports (I make exceptions, of course, if MY guy gets assaulted! ;D), but this is a whole different animal. For a coach to pay for injuring opponents makes him no better than a mafia don. Where are the prosecutors?

General football / Title IX: Good, Good, but..., or Bad
December 27, 2011, 12:32:51 AM
In response to a drift from the 'Purple Powers' thread, I'm opening this new one.

I have only sons (and a non-athletic wife, and non-athletic daughter-in-law) so have no personal stake in this argument. But I DO think Title IX was one of the best things since, well, forever. From NO women's sports at all when I was in school, we now have national tourneys in many, many sports.

Pretty much my ONLY reservation would be not taking football out of the equation. Several decades after the rise of women's sports, I still see no real move towards women's football (still mostly derided as 'powderpuff football' and/or turned into a sexist fantasy: 'lingerie football' :P). Since football has a much larger number of participants than any other sport, the result (to balance number of participants by gender) has been the dropping of many (minor :P) male teams. (Here I DO have a personal interest: my older son was recruited by EMU as a scholarship soccer player, before they dropped the men's soccer team.)

I'm still very much a supporter of Title IX, but I'd have to go in the 'Good, but...' category. What say you all?

Anyone can start a new topic - you don't have to beg Pat! ;D

Have at it, guys!

Pro ball / Stephen Strasburg
June 08, 2010, 08:23:06 PM
He's lookin' like the real deal so far - in five innings, 4 hits and 8 Ks. Unfortunately, he also trails 2-1.

The OTHER game everyone is watching (Armando Galarraga's first start since his '*perfect game'), is just getting underway.

Today, in Big Ten play, Michigan fell behind Northwestern 14-0, and WON in the 10th, 15-14, on a walk-off homer!

Can anyone recall a bigger comeback at any level of baseball?

Men's soccer / CCIW

It was drivin' me crazy that the CCIW did not have a page of its own.

Jim, how could you?! :o ;D

Pro ball / MLB Topics
February 08, 2008, 06:32:15 PM
[Jim, the soccer board has a pretty active thread on the World Cup and European Leagues. If you'd prefer to keep this purely d3, feel free to delete this thread.]

Assuming they don't get picked up by anyone this season (seemingly increasingly likely), Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens will all first become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration in the December 2112 balloting.

a) All seem obvious first-ballot winners on the 'merits'; all seem doubtful based on the steroids allegations. What an election that will be! Predictions?

b) For other players on the ballot that year, are their chances increased, decreased, or unchanged?

Women's soccer / Women's World Cup
September 07, 2007, 10:03:18 PM
I thought that the retirement of Hamm, Foudy, Chastain, etc., after the Olympics would inevitably mean a rebuilding period. Silly me! If I recall correctly, they are undefeated since then (26-0-4?) and once again ranked #1 in the world. Obviously, then, they CAN win another World Cup - WILL they, and send the long over-shadowed Kristine Lilly out in a blaze of (well-deserved) glory?

Since this board has been pretty dead, I was tempted to post this on the Men's World Cup (etc.) thread, but thought I'd try to resurrect this board.

Multi-Regional Topics / Posters' Poll
January 06, 2006, 03:44:42 PM
As the (reluctant) tabulator of our first ever Posters' Poll, I thought I'd open a new thread so as not to overwhelm the Top 25 Talk (and to avoid possible confusion over which poll was being discussed).

The poll is initially open to anyone who wishes to participate. To maintain continuity, however, no new voters will be allowed after the second poll.

Voting will be weighted by poster status: HoF voters will be counted thrice, starters and above will be counted twice, all others once. Status is as of your first poll participation and will not change later.

Each poll will be for games through Sunday (beginning this Sunday, the 8th); ballots must be sumitted by 7pm Tuesday. Those wishing to be admired for their perspicacity (or mocked for their bone-headedness!) may post their votes here; those preferring a secret ballot should send to cabonney@netscape.net (or use the message service on this site).

Ballots which in my opinion are too quirky or 'homerish' will be questioned off-line, then either accepted or rejected. Anyone listing Caltech or Maine-Presque Isle on their top 25 will be summarily ejected! ;D

Anything I've forgotten to mention?

Crazy Carl (and others),

Big East MUST be the best - they finish with no one in the 'elite eight' (tourney record: 7-6).

Therefore the ACC MUST be the best - they had ONE team in the 'elite eight'!

OOPS! Wait a second, the much-maligned (this year) Big Ten (our motto: "So we can't count - you got a problem with that?") had THREE teams in the 'elite eight', and has TWO teams in the 'Final Four'.

For THIS year, I hope this will end your bickering - I'm sure you have MUCH too much pride (whether deserved or not!) to fight over SECOND place. http://discus.d3hoops.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0>

uh-oh -

Arseneault vs. Westhead?
jeff p vs. Sager?

Us mice are seeking shelter!!

In the great tradition of war, I shall return to shoot the wounded and suck-up to the victor!

Well, actually, cynical contrarian that I am, I'll probably end up doing the opposite.

Oh, what the hell - go at it, and who knows what I'll do?!! (I obviously don't!)

Multi-Regional Topics / Bumblin' B's

Yeah, but NJCU and Bethany both lost by MORE than 15 ... so mark TWO DOWN for the bumblers.

Maryville could usually compete straight up in pool C, but MOST of the pool Bs have been pretty pathetic over the years.

(Message edited by cabonney on March 3, 2005)
