Here's an interesting question coming from someone that has followed his own basketball team (the Johnnies) but not much else in the greater context of the national D3 conversation:

Are there the same regional disparities when it comes to D3 hoops similar to what we see in football? (i.e., the knock on the East is that they don't have as rigorous a path in the NCAA tournament because it is perceived as a weak(er) region than the West)

I can see that 10 of the last 12 national champions came from the west, but that doesn't necessarily paint the entire picture.

I'd say there's a similar issue, in that the majority of teams are concentrated in the East and this more eastern teams are less likely to face tough competition early in the tournament.  The biggest factor for basketball tends to be about size - the midwest teams generally are able to get more skilled bigs than those in the east, where a lot of scholarship programs throw money at those guys more readily.  Exhibit A is the last title game we saw, where the size of Oshkosh was more a factor against Swarthmore than anything else.  When NESCAC teams have won, its generally been teams with size to compete with the midwest contenders.  The reservations we have about teams like Randolph-Macon or Marietta this year tend to revolve around whether they can compete inside.

It's not a determining factor, by any means, but its very influential.  You've got a bunch of generally large midwest teams who beat the heck out of each other until one emerges.  It's a good recipe for championship success.

Johnnies won big, jumping out to a 49-37 halftime lead and never looking back en route to an impressive 87-65 win over Gustavus.

Augsburg took its frustrations out on Concordia in a 94-64 win in Moorhead.

Carleton locked up the #3 seed with a 68-59 win over Bethel in Northfield.

St. Scholastica led at the half, 35-34, but St. Olaf came out guns-a-blazin' in the second half en route to a 91-74 victory in Duluth.

Macalester moved up to the #6 seed with a 76-62 win over Hamline in St. Paul (and a little help from Carleton beating Bethel)

First round of the MIAC Tournament went according to the chalk.

Interesting matchup for Augsburg as they haven't seen Bethel since November (as their second game late January was cancelled due to COVID).

Carleton defeated Macalester in its first two matchups this season. With a win, the Knights would return to the semifinals for the first time since 2017. Macalester is making its first quarterfinal appearance since 2005, and are looking to make its first semifinal visit since 2004.

Gustavus is looking to make its first semifinal appearance since 2015, while St. Olaf is looking to make its sixth semifinal appearance since 2014.

Hamline looks to upset the #1 seed for their first trip to the semifinals since 2011. St. John's is looking to make its sixth consecutive semifinal appearance.

Is there another set of regional rankings that come out this week?

Yep.  Tuesday afternoon.  These will be the final rankings we see before selection, although the committee will do one more set on Sunday that won't be released until later that week.

Looks like we will have to wait another day for the MIAC Quarterfinals as winter weather has pushed back the tournament schedule by one day.

The final will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 27.

St. Olaf hits a buzzer beating three pointer in St. Peter to win 76-73 and will travel to Collegeville to face an Saint John's team that thumped Hamline by 21. The Johnnies dominated in the paint, outscoring the Pipers 42-18.

#6 seed Macalester went on a 19-4 run to end the first half to lead Carleton, 40-18, at the break. The hole was too big for Carleton to climb out of and the Fighting Scots are headed to Minneapolis to face Augsburg who beat back a resilient Bethel squad. The Royals kept the game within a single possession until the middle of the second half when Augsburg went on a run to keep the game at arm's length until the final buzzer.

What's at stake in the MIAC semifinals:

The Johnnies look to make their third consecutive MIAC Championship game appearance and avenge a 77-70 loss in Northfield on February 9 which snapped a Johnnies 7-game winning streak, and the Oles are looking for their first MIAC Championship game appearance since 2016.

In the other half of the bracket, the Auggies look to make their third MIAC Championship game appearance in the last four years. The Fighting Scots have an opportunity to go to the MIAC Championship Game for only the second time in their history. Augsburg won both matchups in the regular season, winning 92-55 in Minneapolis on January 8 and then squeaking out a 65-63 victory in St. Paul just ten days ago.

I'm excited for both semifinals matchups.

Also, Macalester is the first #6 seed to make the semifinals since 2015, and, if they pull the upset, would be the first #6 seed to play in a MIAC Tournament Championship Game.

SagatagSam, To make corrections, Macalester beat Augsburg to close out the regular season 65-63 at the Leonard Center. The Last #6 seed in the MIAC to make it to the Semis in the Playoffs was just 2 years ago with Saint Marys losing to St. Thomas.

txg

St. Olaf was the #6 seed in 2020.  But they did make the semis, upsetting Augsburg in the quarterfinals before getting blown out by St. John's.

Thanks for the help. I sacrificed accuracy for speed when going through things this morning.

Conference tournaments are fully on. It is time for upsets and great games happening at all times. The results will not only be conference champions, but NCAA tourney dreams realized ... and dashed.

Thursday on Hoopsville, we catch up with a number of teams which realize they have to keep winning this week if they want to keep playing next week. "There is no more next game ..."

There are plenty of guests to talk to, so we are jamming them into a super-sized show. Some have quietly emerged on top, or near the top, of their conference races and hope to use home court advantage to win an automatic bid. Others knowing they have to win to make sure to keep playing this season. And one coach who shows that there is a lot of things that are important during basketball season.

Guests include (order subject to change):
  • Chad Dickman, Hood men's coach
  • Sean Coffey, Utica men's coach
  • Pat McKenzie, St. John's men's coach
  • Jacey Brooks, SUNY Cortland women's coach
  • Christine VanHook, PSU-Behrend women's coach
  • Stephany Dunmyer, Oberlin women's coach
  • Todd Kent, UC Santa Cruz women's coach

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the NABC Studio. All guests appear on the BlueFrame Technology Hoopsville Hotline.

Just to keep things interesting... tonight's MIAC Tournament Semifinal game in Collegeville has been moved to Claire Lynch Hall on the campus of the College of Saint Benedict due to a broken water main and required power outage near the Warner Palaestra (which houses Sexton Arena).

Could be a crazy atmosphere as it is not hard to pack CLH (cap. 1,100), which is not even half the size of Sexton Arena.
