My prediction for Pool C bids. This is organized by Region just to keep things easier for me.  Total of 23 bids available.
Region I (4):  Conn, Middlebury, Tufts, Bowdoin
Region II (1):  Babson
Region III (3):  Oneonta, Rochester, Brockport
Region IV (2):  Franklin and Marshall, Washington College
Region V (1):  Rowan
Region VI (2):  Christopher Newport, Washington and Lee
Region VII (5):  Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan, Case Western, John Carroll, Otterbein
Region VIII (2):  Chicago, North Central
Region IX (2):  UW Platteville, Carleton
Region X (1):  Colorado College

CSO, honestly, I am not picking on you, but wanted to clarify the number at-large berths (see red bolded statement in quoted post above).  This is very important for trying make predictions and which bubble teams will make it or not.

There are 1 Pool B at-large berth and 22 Pool C at-large berths.  Pool B consists of the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) teams and UW-Eau Claire and maybe Maranatha Baptist.  So you need to pick one of these teams for the Pool B at-large berth and then drop one of your other at-large selections.

I think it's pretty safe to say that UW-Eau Claire will get the Pool B berth.  The only competition is the CCS #1 seed and tournament champion Covenant.  Despite similar W-L-T records, Eau Claire has a much better SOS (.561 vs. .513 last week).  Neither beat a ranked opponent.  Eau Claire was ranked in the first weekly rankings but missed the past two weeks.  Covenant wasn't ranked in any of the three weeks.

Borrowing from content I produced for D3soccer.com, this might be helpful for some new to this whole process.  Granted this has all already occurred behind the scenes.

Following the release of the third weekly regional rankings the process is as follows.

  • Conference championships are completed by 6:00 p.m. ET, Sunday, November 5.
  • The NCAA compiles the data corresponding to the at-large selection criteria (win-loss-tie percentage against Division III opponents, results versus ranked Division III teams, Division III Strength-of-schedule) and provides it to Regional Advisory Committees.
  • The Regional Advisory Committees do their fourth regional rankings in the same manner as the previous three weeks. The results versus ranked Division III teams (RvR) criteria is based on who was ranked in the third regional rankings that were released on Wednesday, November 1.
  • The national committee makes adjustments to the regional rankings as they see fit but does not publish them until after they have announced the tournament field (including the at-large berth selections).
  • An updated RvR is developed based on opponents who were ranked in either the third or the just completed fourth regional rankings. This is the RvR that the national committee will use when comparing teams across regions on a national basis.
  • The highest ranked Pool B candidate from each region, if any, is placed "on the board", the teams discussed, and one team is selected.
  • Pool C teams (teams who were not awarded their conference's automatic berth and unselected Pool B teams) in the final regional rankings are identified.
  • The highest ranked Pool C candidate from each region is placed "on the board", the ten teams discussed, and one team is selected. The next highest ranked Pool C candidate from the selected team's region is added to the board and the process repeats until all Pool C at-large berths have been awarded.

This was our understanding of the process at D3soccer.com. And I highlighted the one step to draw attention to when in the process we understood that the Results versus Ranked Opponents got updated to reflect the fourth/final rankings in addition the third rankings.

With the demise of d3soccer.com, I miss the extensive work that Cristan did prior to the tournaments.  Here is my effort at showing who has captured Pool A slots, who has been knocked out of conference tournaments, and who is still playing.

Records are current as of last night, as are the R v R numbers.  I did not update the SOS numbers, so I used the ones from the last regional rankings.

Teams highlighted in red have clinched a Pool A.  Basically, among ranked teams currently this only applies to Emory.  Teams in yellow have been eliminated from Pool A consideration and will need Pool C.  Teams not highlighted are still alive in their conference tournaments and some of them will wind up earning Pool A bids.  Remaining games for each of the non-highlighted teams are included.  I will update at the conclusion of each day, wrapping it all up on Sunday night.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e8PonooxY65NqKqnOoR4CBGGXoAYFYv7Tb88ZXrLf-k/edit?usp=sharing

This document is a sanity-helper, College Soccer Observer!!

Quick question: for the updated RvRs, did you also factor in changes in ranked teams for the current week?  So, for example, if a team had a win (loss) against a team that was newly ranked this week, did you add that win (loss)?  (And conversely, if it had a win (loss) against a team no longer ranked, does it get that win (loss) removed?)

Case in point:  Region X - with Southwestern entering the rankings and MHB/Pac Lutheran leaving, I think some of the RvRs would need to account not only for their conference playoff results but also the changes in their prior results?

That's a lot of work obviously, so if not no worries, but it would be good to know in order to mentally note these changes in RvR.
I took last weeks r v r and added in the results this week against teams who were currently ranking. Nothing is included involving teams who were ranked in week 3 but dropped out.  For Redlands, they had no r v r listed, but given that they have played and lost to Occidental 3 times, I put them down for 0-3-0.

Well, I know I am late to the party, but in catching up I saw this (the red bolded part in the quoted post above) and didn't see a direct correction made although Coach Andrew did allude to it.

If you took the RvR shown in the Third Rankings, that RvR was based on who was ranked in the the Second Rankings which does not apply when doing at-large selections.  So in additional to adding results versus new teams in the Third Rankings, you also need to remove any results versus teams that were ranked in the Second Rankings but dropped out for the Third Rankings.  Maybe you are doing that, but your post that I quoted didn't mention that.  So just wanted to point that out for everybody, especially those new to this whole process.

That said, I am happy to see posters like you taking the initiative and putting in the time to try to make up for the absence of D3soccer.com this season.  For the first time in over a decade, I personally am going to simply check in later today to see who gets the at-large berths without trying to figure it all out and prognosticate, but I love seeing that there is discussion and predictions happening here.

Cristan, you may have posted about this 50 times before, but is the language or practice around counting BOTH 3rd and 4th weeks results for RvR purposes definite (as in must be applied that way) or could there be discretion there...like a team shows in hindsight that they really weren't a ranked-quality team, and so assuming if in the last spot anyway, maybe a W or L versus that team shouldn't count as much?

Well, I got to tell you, it was nice to be be relatively relaxed and stress-free this weekend and getting good sleep. It's been over a decade that I couldn't say that about this particular weekend. I do miss doing it on some level and, like many of you have expressed, I definitely miss not having the information available to me as a fan that we at D3soccer.com were able to provide surrounding the at-large selections and everything else throughout the season.  But my four soccer-playing kids (not to mention nieces and nephews) with their soccer and non-soccer activities (dance, gymnastics, field hockey, etc.) keep me so busy that I really don't have time to miss it too much.  And last night I was happily compiling video highlights from the weekend's games instead of trying to figure out who the 22 Pool C at-large berths and 1 Pool B at-large berths will go to.  That was very nice and the best part: I didn't feel guilty about it!

OK, that's not answering your question, so . . .

First, for the benefit of "the whole class", I'll just recap how the Results versus Ranked Opponents plays out.

"Results versus ranked teams" criteria spelled out
For the . . . first weekly rankings:
N/A (no previous rankings)
second weekly rankings:
results versus teams ranked in the first weekly rankings (10/18)
third weekly ranking:
results versus teams ranked in the second weekly rankings (10/25)
final rankings:
results versus teams ranked in the third weekly rankings (11/1)
at-large selections:
results versus teams ranked in either the third weekly rankings (11/1) or the final rankings (11/6)

To your question, as I posted previous in this or another thread, the committee seems to have a lot of latitude in how to consider results versus ranked opponents.  Our understanding was that they can weigh a result versus a team at or near the top of their region differently than a result versus a team near or at the bottom.  That result versus at lowly ranked team would still be a part of the criteria being considered, so it can't be erased and disregarded, but not all wins (or ties and losses) need to be treated as equal.

Teams ranked in the third weekly rankings, that will count toward the final RvR, were ranked based on 90% of the season already being in the books. So it would not reflect well on the committee's own work if last night they all of a sudden in hindsight didn't think a certain team was worthy of ever having been ranked. One result during conference playoffs should not change their opinion that drastically about a team.  Can it drop them down a few pegs and out of the rankings, sure.  But if the season was extended another week, a team that was in the third rankings but out of the fourth rankings would seem a strong candidate to push back into the rankings if they would get the right result in that extra week.

Probably doesn't answer your question really, but I'm not sure there is a clear cut answer.

Does anyone have any information on the host site selection? I understand you must apply and have adequate resources to host three teams. But is ranking accounted for when selecting the host site?

2023 Division III Soccer Pre-Championships Manual

from page 25 . . .

Section 2.6  Site Selection

PROSPECTIVE HOSTS
Any institution or conference interested in hosting a preliminary round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's and/or Women's Soccer Championships must submit a proposed budget and a safety and security form, respond to sportspecific questions, and ensure the institution's key contact and facility information are up to date via the Championships Bid and Host Profile portal. Please note that in order to submit a bid, you must first locate the desired championship in the championships "Available for Bid" section and select "Start Bid." A separate proposed budget must be submitted for each round that an institution or conference is interested in hosting.

Member institutions can regularly and easily access their profiles by visiting championships.ncaa.org. For profile issues, user access or to reset a password, please email championshipbid@ncaa.org or contact the respective  championship manager.

The deadline to submit all materials for hosting preliminary rounds is Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.

CRITERIA
The Division III Championships Committee has prioritized the following site-selection criteria for all championships:
  • Quality and availability of the facility and other necessary accommodations;
  • Geographical location (which may include such factors as rotation of sites, weather, accessibility and transportation costs);
  • Seeding; and
  • Attendance history and revenue potential, which shall be considered necessary to assure fiscal responsibility.
In addition, the soccer committees include the following site-selection deliberations:
  • Preference is given to grass/grass-like surfaces; and
  • The potential host must have played the majority of its home games on the field it is submitting for consideration.

A competing institution that cannot charge admission at its home facility and/or cannot establish a barrier to separate the spectators from the field of play, and/or does not have a field that meets minimum-size requirements (70 yards x 115 yards) may not serve as host.

An evaluation will be made of institutional facilities to determine if they are acceptable for championship play. Selection of host sites will be based partly upon the quality of the playing facility. A facility evaluation form must be completed online with a deadline of Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.

from page 26 & 27 . . .

JOINT HOSTING INFORMATION
The NCAA Division III Championships Committee has approved a recommendation from the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Soccer Committees to establish hosting guidelines for institutions whose men's and women's teams earn berths in their respective championships. The committees established these guidelines to eliminate potential conflicts created by hosting both championship events, to assist institutions in preparing for hosting opportunities and to ensure the opportunity of providing a quality championship experience for all teams involved in both championships.

Institutions with both men's and women's teams in the championships will follow these hosting guidelines:

1st/2nd Round
Sectionals
Even Years      Men host           Women host
Odd Years      Women host           Men host

If conflicts prevent another institution from hosting while following these guidelines, the combined men's and women's committees will determine which team will play first at the same site.
