Men's soccer / 2017 North Region
August 28, 2017, 12:33:53 PM
Games are just a few days away! Hearing exciting things out of the North Region. Supposedly UWW brought in the Raymond Twins (transfers from UW Parkside and UW Milwaukee). Who else has any reports?

One thing to point out about a potential UWW vs. Carthage rematch in the second round is that the first game was played at UWW. Not many times is playing away from home an advantage but it might be for UWW. They are built to slow the game down and pump every throw in, corner and free kick into three guys 6 ft 4 or taller waiting in the box. With Carthage's field being much narrower than UWW's field I believe this is an advantage to the Warhawks. Throw ins will go deeper in the box and cause problem after problem for the opposing defense and goalkeeper.

If both teams make it to the second round I believe UWW wins 2-1 in overtime.

A long drive can certainly impact a player when they have to play the same day as the drive. In the case of the NCAA tournament, teams arrive a day before, practice on the field and get settled in the hotel. Teams have a full 24 hours to stretch the legs and get comfortable with their surroundings.

From what I have heard UWW's grass field is in terrible condition right now. Many days of rain followed by games has caused the field to be the worst it has ever been in years. Also, the fact that Chicago, Carthage and UWW are logistically close to each other could be another deciding factor.

Chicago, Carthage, UST and DePauw could be the four "Midwest" hosts. Could see UWW being the #2 in either the UST or DePauw's group of 4.

NORTH
1 St. Thomas (MN) 13-0-3
2 Wis.-Whitewater 13-4-3
3 Dubuque 12-4-0
4 Luther 11-4-2
5 Wartburg 12-5-1
6 St. Norbert 14-3-0

These are a bit flawed since Luther should presumably drop out and be replaced by Loras after the result went in Loras's favor Tuesday night.

UWW season is over since they have no conference tournament. .587 SOS and potentially 4-2-2 regionally ranked record enough to host for the Warhawks?

Loras and Macalester were most likely was booted due to their 0-3 and 0-2 records against regionally ranked opponents.

Still seems like St. Norbert is dependent on winning the conference championship. .521 SOS and 2-0 record against regional ranked (if Loras gets added next week) seems like it might not be enough.

From what I saw I believe that the Warhawks are better off without him. He is not the same player as he was last year. Might have to do with the injuries he has been dealing with.

St. Norberts have done nothing wrong so I do not see them dropping out of the top 6. They also have wins over UWW and Loras. Macalester could be the odd team out as they are 2-3-2 in their last 7.

1. UST
2. Loras
3. Luther
4. Dubuque
5. St. Norberts
6. UWW

University of Wisconsin Whitewater is my dark horse. After making a couple brief appearances in the top ten this year they have dropped down a bit and have been sent to Wheaton for their first two games. This team has beaten tournament teams Loras, MSOE, St. Olaf and Carthage (all of whom won their respective conferences).

UWW plays a direct style that is ugly at times but frustrates the best of teams. Countless numbers of free kicks and long throws pumped into the box all aimed at 6' 7" center back Justin Stanko will give any opposing coach nightmares.

The real difference this year from past years is that UWW has someone to lead the attack. Dylan Hottsmith has been a breath of fresh air for the Warhawks up top. He has 7g and 7a on the year and can create something out of nothing. Just ask Loras fans what they think of him after he single handedly beat 3 defenders and won the game in the last five minutes at the dreaded Rock Bowl.

Rose Hullman cannot be overlooked by UWW. This will be their second time traveling to Wheaton this year and you have to think the familiarity with the location will help them out. Looking at the box score of their earlier trip they were completely outplayed in front of 1300 fans. I think there might be 130 in the stands for this first round match and RH's experience against quality opponents (Wheaton, Chicago, DePauw) will help them out in this game.

All in all though I believe that UWW should take care of business in this first game. They have showed they can make the transition from grass to turf (beating Loras at Loras) and their ugly style of beating teams to death with long throws and free kicks transitions very well come tournament time.

UWW 1 Rose Hullman 0

A win by UWW and Wheaton will set up for a rematch of the second round last year. Wheaton thumped UWW 3-0.

UWW beat the CCIW, MIAC, NACC and IIAC champions and they still do not host. Wheaton gets a gift after a sub par season.

If Carthage goes on to win the CCIW, St. Olaf the MIAC and MSOE the NACC. Then UWW will have beat the IIAC, CCIW, MIAC and NACC conference champions.

As for hosting a sectional I believe that UWW should get the nod over Loras. They have a grass field (like the final four is played on) and they have a soccer specific (no football lines). Add the head to head win at Loras and I think it is a no brainer.

Men's soccer / Re: 2015 POOL C
November 05, 2015, 12:09:28 PM
Macalester is not a lock. They have only played one game outside of Minnesota all year and if Loras loses to Dubuque they would be the 6th team from the North region. All of their regionally ranked games were at home and their .561 SOS is good but not great. If Loras wins then Macalester is in. If they lose they are out in my opinion.

How I see it:

Pool B: UWW

Conference Winners: MIAC Winner (St. Thomas or St. Olaf), IIAC Winner (Loras or Dubuque), UMAC Winner (CSS or UW-S)

At Large Lock:
- Loras is in if they lose

Bubble:
- Macalester like it or not is on the bubble in my mind. If Loras wins then I believe they are in. If they lose does the North get 6 teams?

Out:
- UW-O
- St. Johns
- UW-P
