I seldom like new mascots, especially those which are influenced by PC motives.

However, Peace has done a great job with their new mascot (to alleiviate any confusion with the other "Pride").

Greensboro is predicted to finish first in the conference.  Any bets on POY?  My pick is Tia Saunders at Peace. She is a dominant player.

I think that you are right Ruthanne...Enoch was the best player in the conference.  However, she missed 4 conference games and that is probably what killed her chances.

It's time for the Big Dance... the teams are selected... the games are scheduled... and now 48 men's and 50 women's teams will take to the court this weekend with the same goal... a national title.
But who will win? The tournament previews are tonight on "Hoopsville"!!!

Sunday night we were live when the teams were selected and we found out who was in and out. The women's bracket was done relatively well... the men's bracket seems to be a bit of a disappointment.

But now we are looking ahead at the big games this weekend. From now on its win or go home.

One of those men's teams that is one of the hottest in the nation is #17 Gustavus Adulphus... who is riding an 18-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. The Gusties now will take on Lawrence on Thursday and could face the defending National Champs, UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. So, what might Mark Hanson be thinking. We will hear from him tonight and how his team has recovered from their 4-5 start to the season.

Now... the NCAA doesn't seed the Men's and Women's Brackets... but we will!
Tonight, live on the air, we will seed the men's and women's brackets according to how we see it and how we think the NCAA was thinking. So you can get an idea of who the NCAA thinks are the top teams and who might be hosting games in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 (Regionals).

And there are new #1 teams in both the Men's and Women's Top-25 this week... but barely. UW-Stevens Point is just points ahead of Amherst on the men's side. And on the women's, it is just a point between Scranton and Bowdoin.

We will breakdown the final regular season Top-25 and try and figure out what the voters were thinking. Along with pointing out how not all of the Top-25 made the tournament.

And of course, we will have live regional reports from around the nation and take your questions and comments live on the air.

So come join us online and LIVE from 8PM - 10PM Eastern!

"Hoopsville": only place where you can listen or chat about Division III Basketball in the nation.

Go to the "Hoopsville" page for information on how you can listen in and chat with us live!

missing basketball- A final thought regarding a player who did not receive Player of the Year honors. Kim Enoch's individual accolades  for 2004-2005 season are as follows:

18 points per game

13 rebounds per game

double-double for points and rebounds in 17 of the 22 games she played

D3HOOPS.COM Team of the Week {Jan.24-30,2005}

USA South Conference First Team

Conference Tournament MVP

D3HOOPS.COM All-South Region First Team

Complete Package...I totally agree that Enoch was the best player in the league.  But, when you miss 4 conference games it does hurt your chances.  I don't think that anyone disagrees that she's the best player.

Hey just joined up here.  Well GO Pride!!!! Anyway so the preseason poll came out, and tell ya'll the truth i see some problems with it.

2005 USA South Women's Basketball Coaches Poll
Rank, Institution (1st place Votes), Pts.
1. Greensboro (3) 40
2. Christopher Newport (1) 39
3. Peace (2) 36
4. Methodist (1) 31
5. Shenandoah (1) 28
6. Averett 22
7. Ferrum 16
8. N.C. Wesleyan 11

I think that the top 3 are right, but 4-7 can be in any order.  Ferrum is underrated. yeah they lost Toland but they have just about everybody else.  Methodist is a bit overrated.  They are a good team, but there really isn't any super-stars, but they won't finish anywhere below 6.

I made my pre-season USASC First Team Predictions

Tia Saunders-Peace
Sirlena Moore-GC
Candace Bryant-CNU
Aline Alzine-FC
Staci Humprey-GC

Player of the Year-Tia Saunders
Anybody disagree?
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: 2122rspc on October 27, 2005, 04:58:06 pm
I don't see how Greensboro will be #1...they lost a lot of their offense.

As far as Tia Saunders, I definitely see her being POY...she's the most dominant player in the league.
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: PrideSportBBallGuy on October 27, 2005, 05:16:05 pm
True Greensboro did lose a lot of there offense, but they did get Staci Humprey...look at her stats from last year she played with the team early on.  GC...I think the offense will be there, the coach is a good coach...don't be surprised if one of the Fr step up.  the coach has one coach of the year 2 out of 3 years he was there.  No expected them to do as well has he did his first year there.
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: 2122rspc on October 28, 2005, 07:52:53 am
Agreed, no one expected him to do that well.  But, would he have done that well if all of those transfers hadn't come in a Christmas of that year???

Will Staci Humphrey make it through a season? ...first NC Wesleyan then GC...she's yet to prove that she can make it through a season.

i think the monarchs could be better than predicted - they've installed a new offensive system to better suite the players and from what i'm hearing, it's looking pretty nice - time will tell, but i think that mc could really make some noise again this year...they did play some pretty good ball toward the end of the season with a very young team last year...who knows
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: narch on November 19, 2005, 10:57:34 am
it looks as though "the system" has gained another convert, as the ehc women beat mc 114-94 last night, in regulation - ehc took 45 threes in that game - i wonder if the monarch coaching staff was ready for ehc to play that way, as it doesn't appear that the wasps were running "the system" last year  ???

Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: narch on November 30, 2005, 01:48:03 pm
insideoutside - nice win for gc last night - looks like the pride women are at least 25-30 point favorites against the monarch ladies based on comparative results :)

any word on the roster changes that we discussed in august...what happened to enoch and the others?  will there be some additions at mid-term (ie: anybody who played last year who will be back 2nd semester)?
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: 2122rspc on December 01, 2005, 01:52:52 pm
I have a feeling Coach Tuggle will manage some roster additions over the break.  Every year he's been there he's found some people to add from somewhere.  Will Enoch be back or will Christina Daniels make another second semester appearance?  Will Staci Humphrey make it through a season or will she make a second semester disappearance again?  However, I do see Alison Blackmon coming on a little stronger soon.  She has a great shot and it will start falling for her I'm sure!

Methodist looks to be much stronger than last year and looks to have a lot of offensive fire power.  They also seemed to control Meredith's Nicole Hall pretty well  last night considering she's been averaging well over 20 points per game and she only scored 14 last night.  Coach Jarman always manages to get the best out of her talent.

Meredith is not the same since Coach Hatchell left.  It's too bad that he's not still there to keep Meredith as the same dominant team that they were year in year out under his direction.

Peace...they have been fairly quiet so far in their 3 and 0 start.  They have beaten consistently strong teams (as of recent years) in Hood and Chowan college.  They have the best player in the league in Tia Saunders and one of the best coaches in Coach Johnson.

wow, isn't college basketball the best?

Dont count out the Lady Captains. Transfer Nikki Rowland (from Marymount) is leading a well balanced offensive attack at 18 ppg and 8 rpg. Candace Bryant, despite missing the first two games for disciplinary reasons is back with avengence. She dropped 24 and 9 at Mary Baldwin and is averaging 15 and 8. Samantha Davis' play has improved with the arrival of Rowland, she's averaging 13  and 6. Five players averaging 6 rebounds or better and seven players averaging 7 points or better. Other transfers include Jessica Carmon from Catawba, a 5-10 post player from Stafford, VA, Dee Luck, a 5-9 post player from Charlottesville who was previously at Peace and Shantel Burwell, a 5-8 jr. guard from VA Beach who came in from Elizabeth City St. Colandra Rollins returns for her sophomore season, she missed the final 8 games due to a knee injury. Should be an interesting year as they Lady Captains develop. They have VA Wesleyan Friday and at one point, nationally ranked Catholic on Sunday.

And your point is?? She has never had this many transfers in her 7 + years at CNU. She had two from the 01-02 season thru 03-04. Im just curious as to what you meant by lots of transfers?? Is there something wrong with that??

my point is...LOTS of transfers...it's a simple observation, don't read anything into the comment that isn't there - some coaches choose to build programs differently...cnu has apparently decided to go with "LOTS of transfers", at least for this year...am i wrong??
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: cnufan on December 15, 2005, 10:09:45 am
I think she chose to build around transfers while adding five true freshman to the fold of a team that returned just FOUR players from last year. So she had to do something. Transfers was one way to go, so was bringing in 8 freshman, she chose to go both routes, bringing in both transfers and freshman. I think she didnt want to take her lumps again for a second straight season. She knows she has to win every year and I think in order for her to compete with the Randolph-Macons, the Marymounts and the Mary Washingtons (who have improved significantly over the last couple seasons), she had to go out and bring in some seasoned players rather than 8 or 10 true freshman.

I dont know about all of you on here but I know that I am ready to get the conference stuff underway. I know that the top 3 spots this year are going to be really close but I do think that GC will pull out top. Staci Humphrey, Serlina Moore are carrying the team yes, but they have alot of good freshmen and returnrs that are carrying alot of the weight also. It will a really good conference battle but in the end I think it will come down to GC and CNU with The Pride coming out on top. What do yall think?

Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: narch on February 16, 2006, 02:13:13 pm
i'll try my hand at this...i think this is how the weekend will turn out

cnu will go 1-1 (loss to gc, win vs. mc)
gc will go 2-0 (beat cnu and su)
pc will go 2-0 (beat au and fc...although the ferrum game is tough)
mc will go 1-1 (beat su, lose to cnu)
fc will go 1-1 (beat ncwc, lose to pc)
au will go 1-1 (beat ncwc, lose to pc)
su will go 0-2
ncwc will go 0-2

final standings/seeds will be:
1. gc 12-2
2. cnu 11-3
3. pc 9-5
4. mc 8-6
5. fc 7-7
6. au 5-9
7. su 4-10
8. ncwc 0-14

if ferrum beats pc this weekend AND mc goes 1-1, it could really make the #3,4,5 seed interesting...i think that pc would get the #3 seed, fc the #4 seed and mc the #5 seed if pc goes 1-1, mc goes 1-1 and fc goes 2-0...should be interesting

Those predictions look pretty good.  I saw the Greensboro/Peace game on Tuesday night and although Peace lost, they could beat GC.  GC played well though, especially Staci Humphrey.  I thought Tia Saunders would be POY but I think that honor will definitely go to Humphrey now.

It looks like i was about right on these picks at the beginning of the year.  I was off with Peace, but they did have the same conference record.  I knew Ferrum was underrated. I think my first team all-conference is dead on.  POY has to go to Staci Humphery.

:)Congratulations GC women's basketball on yet another out right regular season championship.  And to have accomplished this feat with only one starter from last season that  played the entire season is a testament to Coach Tuggle and his coaching staff.  And to think three freshman starters with three more years to play.  Is this the beginning of a conference dynasty under the direction of Jason Tuggle?

Title: Re: USA South Conference

Absolutley, congrats to the Pride for their regular season championship. They are a tough squad, but watching them play at CNU and then at GC, if Staci Humphrey is the least bit off, so is GC. She makes that team that much better when she is hitting her shots. I think she is definitely a lock for POY. I think your first team is right on as well. Tuggle should be COY in my mind, especially the job he has done with what returned or didnt return from last year's NCAA team. ROY, well, I dont think there is one frosh in the top 20 in scoring, then its Kristen Whitehurst, I think she's a frosh from Methodist, Mary Porter from GC and Brittany Lynn from PC. Should be interesting. But the quarterfinals are first on Tuesday and then All-Conference comes out Wednesday.

goose - i meant to ask this over the weekend, but forgot - i arrived just as the ladies game ended on saturday, and saw the cnu women doing a chant at mid-court at mc - sounded like "whose house? our house!", or something like that...did you catch that? it looked pretty bush, to me, and i heard they did more of the same through the halls of the riddle center as they were heading back to the locker room...whatever happened to winning with class?

it also seems that the lady captains have a bit of a short memory...the last time they won in the riddle center was the 01-02 season and that was a 1-point overtime victory - furthermore, the lady monarchs won two games in freeman last year, so is freeman the lady monarchs house?

congrats to gc on another conference championship...impressive

Here is Staci Humphrey's stat line from GC's loss at CNU

FG-A    3FG-A  FT-FTA REB  TOTR  TP      A       TO    BLK    S       MIN
7-20     4-13     6-8     1-1     2     24     3     8     1     6     40

35% from the field, 31% from behind the arc.

Here is Staci's stat line from GC's win vs. CNU

7-21      3-11      8-10      2-4      6      0      25      8      5      0      3      37

Difference here, she shot the same, but grabbed more rebounds and didnt turn the ball over nearly as much and also passed off a ton more assists.

To me, when she plays better, GC plays better, I know its only one game, but someone from inside the GC realm even agreed with this.

I dont think that's what they were saying, but I cant be certain as I wasnt paying attention to what they were saying. But I do agree with you that that place is the last arena our women need to be talkin smack in. We have always have a tough time playing there, you are correct in that statement. I dont think that's what they were saying, but I cant be certain as I wasnt paying attention to what they were saying...But I cant say for sure if that's what they were saying or not.

at least 3 other observers, as well as a number of the women's team members that i've talked to thought they were saying the same thing, for what it's worth...it's not a big deal, just another reason to want to beat cnu :)

on another note, i was looking at staci humphrey's numbers yesterday...she is ranked nationally in something like 5 categories, including #1 in ppg and #5 (i think) in apg - i know the girl at rmc (silva) gets a lot of publicity (and rightfully so), but humphrey's is putting up numbers that are every bit as impressive...it's good to have that kind of talent in the conference, even if she isn't a monarch :)

her history is interesting...plays as a frosh at ncwc and puts up nice numbers (15.3 ppg), presumably sits at gc the next year, plays the first semester last year (17.1 ppg) at gc but not the 2nd, then plays all of this year (23.3 ppg) - brackett must have been sick having to play against and without her...right now she's averaging 19.8 ppg for her career...wow

more importantly, does anyone know how much eligibility she has?  i'm pretty sure she's got 2 semesters, but does she have a 3rd semester to play since she didn't play last spring?

Welcome to Meredith and to Mary Baldwin!

Is there any thought to the Women's side breaking into Divisions?  There are now 5 Virginia schools and 5 NC schools on the Women's side.

Shenandoah might like the fact that they could cut their travel budget.

I think that could be a great idea.  The last I heard well mostly a rumor.  SU was trying to leave.  Maybe now they won't have too. Two divisions should be a thought.

It is about time that Meredith joined a conference.  This is something that they have needed to do for years.  Former Coach Hatchell lobbied for so long to get Meredith in a conference and now that he's gone, they join.  But, I'm very happy that they are finally in!

I am glad they will be joining and will save on the budgets for schools will it not.  If with the new teams playing each other twice will lead 18 games in conference play. Budgets won't be saved at all.  I hope they do divide it into divisions.  Adding teams should better the conference.  I don't know how the other sports competition for those schools.  It doesn't help with basketball.  They aren't the best teams in basketball.  I hope they get better though.  Any team that gets AQ for this conference now might be stuck playing a tougher team come NCAA's, and it won't help any team in this conference to get top 25 votes.

Pat-

I am agreeing with Ralph on that aspect.  I think it is a good way to cut budgets.  I ran some mileage numbers and saw the situation that SU is in currently.  The only feasible way they could cut the travel budget though is playin VA schools twice and playing every NC team at home. Thats of course if there was a balanced schedule.  A 18-game conference schedule doesn't benefit any team in the conference in terms of milage.  Keeping it at 14-game conference schedule when MB and MC join, will leave two teams out every year. If every team is played twice.  It won't really determine a conference champ.

SU's current situation on mileage is 1660.49 miles conference.  18 games would make it obviously higher at 2001.  Even if SU played (GC, NCWC) the two closest schools to their school, every year on what a proposed 13-game conference, that makes sense, (playing VA schools twice and NC schools once and vice versa for NC schools) the milage is 1536.81.  Thats if they played those two on the road every year.  I am sure it would be more fair to alternate Home/Away.  Thier mileage would be more any other way.  I am still in the middle of putting the numbers together.  I will show you my results a little later.

In general this won't help SU cut travel budget.  Adding the two teams will hurt SU.

I won't debate about top 25, but you said before.

"This is no snub. This is reality. Who is the Top 25, or even Top 50 team that Greensboro has played and beaten, exactly?"

Adding those teams will make it worse.
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: Pat Coleman on July 21, 2006, 04:42:45 pm
Agreed that those two teams do not help the USAC women's basketball teams' competitiveness nationally.

And also, yes, two new conference games increase Shenandoah's conference-game travel. But those are two games (or however many depending on your proposed conference setup) that they don't have to play non-conference. No more home-and-home with St. Mary's, doesn't hurt there.

Unfortunately for Shenandoah, this is what life is like as a geographic outlier.
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: PrideSportBBallGuy on July 21, 2006, 06:28:32 pm
I have looked at just about every possibility, no matter what SU is an outlier.  I think a NC and VA break up helps NC teams because they are all close to each other for the most part.  VA they are much more spread out.  An somewhat unfeasible E and W will have to work out.  With all VA teams in one division for instance CNU will have 911 division miles.  What I think it should be they have 837 miles. AU 661 miles in VA and E/W division  they only have 458 miles. So here is what I think the confereces divsions should be. (Numbers represent miles

Division           1
Peace          558.2
Meredith          558.11
Ferrum          571.32
Shenadoah     1091.71
Averett          458.28
TOTAL          3237.62

Division           2
Greensboro    710.26
CNU          837.36
Mary Baldwin  1000.02
NCWC          622.83
Methodist          758.09
Total          3928.56

No matter what USA South decides having SU and Methodist together should never happen as it is the biggest trip in the conference.

This way if there is a 13-game conference play.  SU will never really exceed the amount of travel they have already.  Even though they probably will.

And get this! They have to play all 18 of their conference games between Jan. 9 (I think) and Feb. 16 or 23. There's a spell where CNU could be playing four games in 8 days a couple time and four games in 10 days. I still think they need to move at least two and maybe four games to December or end of November, much like the ODAC and Capital do. Spread things out a bit so they arent playing seven non-conference games from middle of November to Jan. 9.

Guilford published their schedule last Friday.  There are some games of interest versus the USASAC.  The women open with Bennett in a home tournament.  McMurry (TX) and SUNY Oneonta are the other bracket.  Other non-conference games are Greensboro at home plus Ferrum and Methodist at a tournament in Fayetteville.  The usual 20-game ODAC schedule completes the 25-game regular season.

Preseason Poll 2006-07

1. Greensboro (5) 46
2. Christopher Newport (3) 45
3. Ferrum 34
4. Methodist 31
5. Shenandoah 24
6. Averett 19
7. Peace 14
8. N.C. Wesleyan 11

I agree a little more with this poll then I did last year.  I think Methodist can finish as high as 2nd.  They had a young team last year so the experience might play a role.  Ferrum nice spot, but I think they might finish lower as low as 5 or 6th.  AU made a solid run last year, I thought.  Possibly as high as 4. Those are my thoughts.  As soon as all the rosters get up.  I will put in my words in for preseaons 1st all-conference.  (Which was right last year)

As the season starts Greensboro has three returning starters and 2 that were role players last year.  Staci Humphrey (23 ppg) is back for her last year and it should be a good one.  Also back are Jamie Motsinger (8 ppg) and Katie Freeman (6 ppg).  Both who were freshman last year and starters.  The other third starter last year as a freshman, Mary Porter is not back.

CNU- Candace Bryant
Gboro- Staci Humphrey, Jamie Motsinger
Ferrum-Aline Alzime
Shenadoah- Alicia Sanders

2nd team
CNU- Nikki Rowland, maybe another player
Methodist- Stacy Williams, Lisa Jackson
Wesleyan- April Wilson

1st team preseason all-conference, not much change from last year.  Would have been up sooner but again CNU roster wasn't up when I wanted to make this list.

G Staci Humphrey
G Nikki Rowland
G Aline Alzime
F Candace Bryant
F (April Wilson or Cassie Womack)...leaning towards Ms Womack.

After a few weeks I believe that the preseason rankings may be a little off.  Shenadoah and Ferrum could do better then expected.  New coach at Shen. looks like he has his girls playing well.  Looks like Greensboro is having a little trouble.  They need more help than just Humphrey and im not sold on the coach.  Averett and Peace look really down.  I dont believe anyone will dominate the conference this year and first place looks like it is up for grabs.

Now if they can only win a quarterfinal game and get to the semis this year. Since they have lost two years in a row in the quarters, I think they have the talent to reach the semis and being that its on their home floor, it could be a CNU/FC title game. CNU drops a tough one at home to Mary Baldwin....after the Squirrels recently defeated Methodist as well. Capts didnt play nor did they shoot particularly well either. Two toughies to close out the regular season, on the road at G'boro and Methodist. Two places they usually do not play very well. They are assured of a quarterfinal home game and can finish anywhere from first to fourth! Should be an exciting finish, just like the men.

Not many posters on this board. I'll start some conversation and see what picks up. CNU has a pre-season All-American in Chelsea Schweers. She is the only Sophomore named. Her first game this year she drops in 35. I don't see many Lady Captain games but will make the effort to see a few games. I doubt I can see any weekday games due to working in Norfolk which can be an hours drive during rush hour. Plus, the fans sitting near me prefer I go home to take a shower before coming to games. I finally got around to looking into the CNU Lady Captains team last night. I see they have 3 new players added since the break. This is an interesting team. I'm going to definately make it to a few games this year.

If I counted right from the men's game day program...the Lady Captains have 16 on the team....2 transfer juniors, the only two returning players in sophomores Moore and All-American Schweers, and 12 Freshmen......and they are 6-2, 1-0 in conference play.

Pat Coleman - keep an eye on these ladies....could be an interesting story down the line!

CNU85,

My daughter plays for Averett and we got to see the game today.  I am extremely impressed with the CNU team.  They definitely have more than Chelsea Sweers.  She is fantastic but I was very impressed with number 5 and number 22 before she twisted her ankle.  I thnk that CNU is much harder to defend than Greensboro because you have to have 3 to 4 defenders that must defend a player who can beat you on the dribble.  I have not seen any other team in the conference with that many weapons.

The 20 yr old, my son - played high school baseball. I was proud watching those games. My 18 yr old is a senior loking at colleges. Maybe not after this weekend.  I guess this means Methodist must be the favorite to win the conference, they beat CNU.  Then again maybe it is still GC.

I don't think Greensboro had a hard time shutting down the weapons of CNU.  Although it could be that Greensboro has too many weapons for CNU to defend. I could be wrong though.

Greensboro is definitely the best team in the conference.  It is nice to see them get some top 25 votes.   GC has many talented players.  The past few games GC has definitely kicked it up a notch.  The conference looks like GC and Ferrum then a fight for 3-6 then a dangerous Peace team and then the rest will contest for the last tournament spot.

CNU wins again with Schweers leading the way with 28 pts, 11 boards and 8 steals.

If I did my mental math right - she has made 126 three pointers in 46 games. The CNU career record is 156.

Congrats to Greensboro, #20 in the polls.

I was a little surprised to see York(PA.) "SOS" numbers, I thought that number would have been a little higher considering they are #10 in the polls.  I only mention York(PA) because I know one of the players there.  :P

Congrats to Schweers! Scored 34 to break 1,000 pt mark for career. She now has 1,017 points in only 48 games!!

Schweers is talented no doubt.  I think 48 games and 1,017 points is impressve for any level.  Except the NBA, players can do that in 10 games, lol.

However when you average 36.5 minutes per game (#4 on the list all time)  I think someone of Schweers ability, 1017 points is very reachable in 48 games.  Karen Barefoot, is #2 and #6 on the list (mpg)  I believe that might have something to do with her school record in points.

If I did the math right Schweers should break Barefoot's record after 97-98 games.  I guess within the last few minutes of the 97th game.

If my math is right if she plays as many games as Barefoot did, Schweers should finish with 2288 points.

I hope someone from The Daily Press reads this. Your coverage of CNU basketball SUCKS!! Tracy McGrady's knee received more coverage than CNU. The main office for the Daily Press is just down Warwick Blvd from CNU. Technically, CNU is the only home team for The DP. I know there is HU and W&M - but they are in other cities. I had to hunt for CNU Lady Captain's news. Obituaries have more info. HELLO - CNU Lady Caps have an All-American!!!!

HELLO - CNU men's team is in first place in the conference with a huge game coming up against Averett.

CNU had great coverage with Jennifer Williams on the job. Put her back covering CNU athletics!!!!

Well,  I guess you will just have to create CNU blogs to get the coverage you want.

At my current location, newspaper staff is being cut.  They have also moved to just an online version of the paper.

Maybe the DP is trying to save a few bucks.

Are the games still well attended?

CNU85,

There is a possible three way tie for fourth at 10 - 8.  If all three teams split do you know the next tie breaker to determine 4-5-6?  Congrats to CNU on the road win at Ferrum.  They had a good weekend with long road trip.

USASouth Tuesday Games:

Game of the Night:
Methodist(PK)@Ferrum:  Only one team can make it to the conference semifinals.  Both teams have been there the last few years.  I think the higher the score Ferrum wins.  The lower the score Methodist wins.  If the game remains in the low 70's high 60's Methodist really has a shot.  I think Ferrum is looking to rebound after the loss to NCWC. My Pick: Methodist

Averett(+2)@Shenandoah:  I think this game will be low scoring in combined points.  Averett does travel to Winchester and will face a rowdy crowd.  If Averett is able to control the tempo they have a very good chance of winning this one.  I don't think either team will shoot very well.  My Pick: Averett

Peace(+8)@CNU:  CNU played very well this past weekend and are looking to continue that this weekend.  Peace has played very well at times.  Nearly beating Methodist twice.  If Peace shoots well tuesday this could be a very interesting game.  I think Schweers will carry CNU to victory. My Pick: CNU

NCWC(+17)@Greensboro:  NCWC has played Greensboro tough both times.  NCWC led most of the way in Rocky Mount. GC just has too much height, depth, experience, speed and all the intangables working in their favor. My Pick:Greensboro

Congrats to Shenandoah Women's team.  They totally outplayed the Averett Women yesterday evening.

After seeing all of the teams this year I think it would be a big upset if anyone beats Greensboro.  CNU is very talented but unless they are shooting extremely well I don't think they can play well enough post defense to handle Greensboro.

Greensboro will be tough to beat. I went to the CNU game Tuesday night against Peace. While I was very impressed with their play, I still have to keep in mind that CNU is VERY young. They have a strong core with Hopkins, Moore and Schweers......but that's 2 sophs and a freshy. I'll say it again....1 transfer JR, 2 returning Sophs, and the rest Freshmen. To finish second in conference with that roster....Hunter deserved to be COTY.

CNU85,

I agree that the CNU women's team finished higher than expected during the regular season.  The pressure they put on teams when they can put 5 ball handlers on the floor at the same time and still defend is noteworthy.  They certainly will be the team to beat for the next couple of years.

I am usually the guy that would rather give the COTY award to the team that finishes better than expected.  With that logic the award should have gone to Katrina Williams.  They had a very sucessful year.  However Greensboro did finish with a perfect record in the conference therefore Coach Tuggle deserves the award again.

CNU85
Last year, Greensboro down the stretch did start 4 freshman and 1 junior and I think Tuggle did deserve the COTY award.  No disrespect to Coach Hunter because I think she is a great coach, she needs to find some help for the rest of her squad too many players playing too many minutes down the stretch.

Great game for CNU today. Wow.....they were on fire.

PSBBG....were you there? Where were you sitting?

Schweers could make some men's teams! She has potential to be one of CNU's greatest players ever. Just keep working hard!! Jessica Moore is a very strong player. And then add a bunch of Freshmen, none of whom were playing like freshmen, and CNU can do some damage. This team is good this year, and will be fun to wach for years to come!

Congrats to CNU and Greensboro for making the NCAA (ok CNU got the pool A bid) Tournament.

Good luck to CNU and Greensboro in the NCAA Tournament.  I hope with a few wins between them, they can raise the profile of the conference.

I will be interested in seeing how Chelsie Shweers does against York.  York is having their best year ever but they did not win their conference tournament.  The conference they play in is strong with Mary Washington and Marymount being the stronger teams in the past.  Greensboro has the ability to win in the tournament but they must shoot better and play with more intensity.  They seemed to be a little flat and overconfident during the first half last Sat.  During the last 5 - 8 min they really picked it up defensively but at that point they were too far behind.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond about Greensboro.   The high school team I am an assistant for was playing in regionals.  We were the #8 seed and we knocked off the #1 and #4(Regional champs in 2008) as we made it to the regional final.  Lost by 7 in the regional final.

Anyway Greensboro had a great season and they should be proud of that, I know they wanted to get further but thats the luck of the draw.  Oglethorpe is a really good team I wish them the best of luck all the way through.

Yep, certainly an interesting question -- same question could be asked in reverse: How can a person be named the region's player of the year when she wasn't the conference's player of the year?

Different groups of voters have differing opinions, the coaches, SIDs and our staff chose All-USAC, All-South and All-American.

I bet there were more anomolies than the one I mentioned. I guess it is bound to happen when there are different voters for the various awards and thousands of players. There is no way the voters could possibly see all the players they voted for actually play. Especially since the games are not televised.

No matter the outcome - I bet any set of those teams could really play some ball if you got them on the same court!

It will take a very complete effort by all players to give CNU a battle.  They were very skilled with adequate size at each position with good depth last year.  And they were mostly Freshman and Sophomores.  If there were no academic or financial casualties they should be very good again this year.  The pressure that they put on is that they have very good ball handlers and players that can penatrate at each position so which ever player has the mismatch gets the ball the most.  Just good sound basketball.  It will take a balanced team or one that plays great on the ball defense to stay with them.

Didn't Greensboro split with CNU last regular season?  They had a good team but that shows that CNU is beatable by a good, not spectacular team.  I thought that CNU was built around their guard.

Greensboro was the best team in the USA South last season.  However CNU did beat them for the tournament championship.  Greensboro lost at least 4 Seniors off of last years team and CNU did not lose anyone.  CNU does have a very talented guard in Schweers but the other players that they added last season really make them hard to defend.

ODAC will only have it's tournament champion in the NCAA's this year again, but USA South may get two in if CN is upset in it's tournament.

Mary Washington is more physically impressive than CN but they play within themselves very well.  (MW is in different conference than USA/ODAC)

There are good students in all the conferences...but...it is what it is..when you put on the shoes and cross the lines to play the game, then it's who plays the game the best.

Schweers named to d3hoops team of week 4 or 5 times this year. She should be named to all-american team when season is over.  Great video clip on "buzzer beaters" link on front page of d3hoops.   Schweers poty. Hunter coty. Moore and Hopkins also named to all conference team.

Scary part - only 1 senior on this team. And some really good freshmen!

C.J. Woollum remembers the brush with the unthinkable.

Standing outside his team's locker room, Woollum, Christopher Newport's men's basketball coach, heard one of his players say something unfathomable: "We're going to lose."

The "we" in question was the CNU women's team; the verb harder to identify. Lose? That hadn't happened in 22 games.

It didn't happen on this day, either.

"Next thing, I hear this eruption," Woollum said. "You would have thought the world had blown up."

Chelsie Schweers' last-second 3-pointer had tied that Feb. 14 game against Ferrum and forced overtime, leading to an eventual 86-80 CNU victory and the unshakable conviction that the season was going to be something incredible.

Congrats to CNU, no doubt they are a really good team.  I really don't think a team of Top 25 quality would be outscored 53-9.  I hope for the sake of the validity of the polls that Messiah is dropped with zero votes for the top 25.  I mean they lost to Johns Hopkins too. CNU is a top 10 quality team, it would be interesting to see what the future lies ahead for them with the "weak" USASouth.  I am not sure they will still be at 4 when the new poll comes out.

CNU is an excellent team.  They beat W&L in a close game.   They are well coached, deep and they do have Schweers.  I do think their conference has 2 other good teams in Greensboro and Ferrum.  Danielle Duncan, Greensboro's center will give CNU real trouble.  That being said, I do think that you go undefeated in conference and far in the NCAA.  The second half by Schweers against W&L saved them from an upset.  She is so sound and such a smart player.

she only needs 631 points with a guaranteed 23 games left (and that assumes a first round loss in conf tourney and no invite to NCAA....so if you add 5 more games - that's 22.5 ppg which is below her career avg and well below her avg the past 2 seasons). I love stats! :P

We have AU who is off to a good start, not historically a strong basketball team, but has improved rapidly over the last couple of years.
NCWC already matched their conference win total from last year.

That is just the start of the stories.

Fastest start in Greensboro history at 6-0.

Made 14 3's on a 87-42 win over Mary Baldwin.

14 3's made according to the record book is tops in program history and 3pt% is #2 best in  program history at 43.8%

#14 for Meredith should have been ejected and also suspended for a few games. Also, she thought it was funny and laughing. Not sure about you, but when I lose by almost 20 points, that's not very funny!

Nice job, Melinda. I was hoping someone would bring the subject to light.

Interesting, although I wouldn't really think its something Schweers could expect on a regular basis as the article eluded too.

A similar foul happened to Greensboro over the weekend, sounds like this one was worse.  The foul was a push, a little less than this grab and tackle.

Greensboro looked pretty good in beating Maryville last night.  Danielle Duncan in particular was hard to handle inside and the team kept its composure after being behind for much of the game.  The vaulted 3-point barrage was not there for the Pride but Duncan was.

I think that is what could make Greensboro dangerous, good inside and out.

I watched a little bit of the game online, Maryville should roll through the GSAC they have a very deceptive team speed.

I agree that Maryville seems to have a pretty good and deep team...and most of the GSAC is not very strong.  Maybe the Scots will meet the Pride again.

CNU 67, McMurry 57 (http://www.cnusports.com/custompages/wbball/Stats/2010-2011/cnuwgm08.htm).

The game was tied at 59 with 1:59 left in the game.  CNU pulled ahead 60-59 with 1:18 left.  McMurry committed 3 turnovers the rest of the game and committed three fouls.

The McMurry women look like a solid 3rd place team in the ASC-West. They need to gain confidence, and the younger players need to develop for me to rank them higher in the ASC-West.  Besides, the ASC-East may be stronger than the ASC-West this year.

Respectfully, CNU may not be even a Top 20 team.

After closer review of the boxscore, I see that CNU only went 7 deep.  CNU only got 36 minutes off the bench, including a 21 and an 11 minute performance from the bench.

The strong teams that made runs from the ASC (the early decade HSU teams, the 2006 Hardin Simmons Final Four, 2008 Howard Payne Championship team, and the Tarra Richardson years at McMurry 2004-08) could go double digit minutes for 8-10 performers regularly.

As a critical opinion from tonight's game, I wonder if CNU has the depth to make a deep run in the NCAA's.  Those legs start to get tired by the 29th and 30th games of the year.

Another question is whether the USA South will provide enough in-season competition to toughen the team.  Tough divisional and conference races were key to the strong teams in the ASC.  In fact, the 2006 HSU team was a Pool C bid and was eliminated in the Conference Tourney Quarterfinals.

I hope to see CNU in the tourney.

30-1 last year with only loss in Sweet 16. Returned all 5 starters, top 9 scorers and added Fr that are playing, including the Va High School State player of the year. Add in 3 time All-American Chelsea Schweers who went over 2,000 career points in first game of season and I guarantee they are a top 20 team and will be in the tourney.

7-1 this year with only loss to a top 10 team in Hawaii. Outscored #15 team 53-9 in second half of game. I think they will be around this year...keep looking!  ;D

That #15 team is now 4-5.  Looks like that team was overrated to start.  They had most of their team back too.

Ralph, I've mentioned before the lack of depth of CNU.  I have to agree with CNU85 on this though, they do have what he said coming back this season.

However, I would also argue I don't think their sweet 16 run is as impressive as many other teams sweet 16 runs.  I think it was the weakest region last year.

If the team was able to win without depth last year, they should be able to do it this year.  However, I don't think they will go undefeated in conference play this year.

CNU85,  Let me be politicially incorrect towards my own team.

CNU did not stomp us, as I would expect a Top 20 team to do.

HSU stomped us earlier that week.

I think that CNU has one of the easier roads to the tournament.  I will not be surprised if CNU goes undefeated and gets a high seed, just because their in-region won-loss percentage will be so high.

I expect them to host a sectional, and maybe host a regional, but the next true test of this CNU team will not occur until the Sweet 16 game.   :)

I saw Danielle Duncan throughout high school.  Also after seeing W&L play CNU, I believe that Duncan is the type of player that will cause foul problems.  She could have a big game.  When they play in Greensboro, I don't want to miss the game.

UMW did not do well at CNU today. Started off the game well but their shooting went cold again. Scored 21 points the first 10 min. of the game but could not score again the rest of the half. Not great defense by CNU as we had many good/open shots just did not hit them.

In the second half CNU continued to score and UMW keep up the misses. It was more of the same open/good shots just could not get them to go in. CS of CNU started getting her shots to fall and the game just got away from UMW. CNU is a good team and is deserving of the #7 ranking (Might be even higher) but I was at the game and it was more UMW not shooting well Vs. CNU playing great defense.

If you look at the play by play you will see CS had 14pts. the last 4:45 of the game to get her total up to the 27 she had for the game. So she had 13 pts. the first 35:05 of the game. UMW did a good job on her till the last 4:45. She is a very good shooter and you have to play good defense for 40:00 on her or she will end up with the points at the end.

Teams go cold when they play CNU. Looks like a lot of just plain old missed shots, since CNU's D isn't all that good.

Three games in a row CNU opponents get cold and shoot less than 30% from the field

My favorite part of the article is this...."The win gives CNU it's 29th straight home win, the longest active streak in Division III and third behind only UCONN (69) and Stanford (52) at all levels."

Pretty impressive.  Exactly the reason why conference tournament shouldn't be played there.  Although if CNU wins the conference teams will still have to travel there.  :P

USASouth Game of the Week(end)

8-2 Ferrum @ 5-6 Methodist

Summary:  Ferrum has rallied around 8 straight wins after starting the season 0-2.  One loss was against D1 Radford, and the 2nd against ODAC conference leader Roanoke.  Ferrum goes with a balanced scoring attack with 4 players averaging in double figures.  They are led by All-Conference C, Kristen Keith, nearly averaging a double-double.  Impressively, Ferrum has been able to pull out a few close wins.  Notably 1/3 where they overcame a 17 pt deficit to pull away from NCW.

Methodist may be 5-6 but it truly doesn't represent their record.  5 of 6 losses are against teams with winning records.  Those 5 teams are an impressive 37-11.  It doesn't get any easier with another tough team, Ferrum coming into town this weekend. They are led by Dawn Sanderson, at C averaging nearly 11 points and 6 rebounds.  Methodist has 10 players that averaging more than 10 minutes a ball game.  Methodist is 3-1 in conference play.

Why Ferrum Will Win:  Ferrum is 8-2 and can put up points in bunches. Ferrum has shown some grit pulling out close games.  They are an efficient team at just under 1 with A/T ratio.  If recent success in conference play is an indicator, if the game is close they want it more.  Ferrum has won 3 straight against Methodist.

Why Methodist Will Win: Methodist is a very tough team to play at home.  They have played a rather tough schedule and should be ready to play Ferrum on Saturday. 4 of 5 Methodist's wins this year have come on the weekend. Methodist is 4-3 at home against Ferrum back to 2003-2004.

Outlook: Very tough to call this one. Initially I thought Ferrum would come in here and have no trouble with Methodist.  If Ferrum is able to jump out early on Methodist then Ferrum will take the W.  However, that rarely happens when Methodist plays at home.  If it is close game,  Methodist has the edge at the line. Rebounding margin is rather close,  I think the edge does belong to the home team, they understand the rims better than the away team.  Its very hard to see a blowout in this one. I am going with the upset in a close game.  Methodist wins 65-59.  Ferrum had to overcome a 17 point deficit to a team that won only one conference game last year.  They get a tougher conference team on the road this time.  Ferrum is only 10-9 against Methodist the last 19 tries.

USASouth Game of the Week:

11-0 Greensboro @ 9-2 Ferrum

Summary:  Ferrum's women's basketball team should get the nickname used for last year's NFL's Cincinnati Bengals team.  'Cardiac Cats'  They rallied this past weekend at Methodist to bring home the W.  Ferrum trailed by 7pts at the half and didn't take the lead until 7 minutes left in the game. Of note congratulations are in order for Coach Harvey, on picking up his 100th win with the team.  Congratulations!  Nothing new with this team, they succeeded this past weekend getting balanced scoring with 4 players in double figures. Ferrum improved to 5-0 in conference play with the win.

Greensboro comes into this game with a 11-0 record and 6-0 in conference play.  They come off a great weekend sweeping the USASouth conference awards.  Duncan (player of the week) Pickard (rookie of the week) Greensboro is lead by experience and with talented fresh faces that provide excellent depth.  Greensboro's defense has been stingy all year.  They have held opponents to below 40% shooting all year and opponents only manage to average just over 50 pts per game against them.

Why Ferrum Can Win:  Ferrum has a talented all around team and handle the ball well.  They shouldn't turn the ball over as much as the other teams Greensboro has faced this year.  Greensboro rallies around points off TO's (56 pts the last 2 games)  The starters average an A/T ratio over 1 (1.02)  Ferrum will be playing at home a tough place to go play (24-5) back to 2009.  With Ferrum's starters they are a solid shooting group as a team they shoot 2nd best FG% (44.3%) in the conference.  At times watching the Greensboro games there has been some slow help defense and wide open looks at the basket.  This cannot happen or Ferrum will put on points.

Why Greensboro Will Win: Having followed this team for what seems like a long time now, quite frankly this group has the potential to be something special.  This team's athletic ability and depth is solid. They are a very quick team and I don't think Ferrum has the size and athletic ability to consistently keep up with Greensboro. (Ferrum was out rebounded this weekend to Methodist, even though statistically they had the edge. Methodist typically has very athletic teams.)  Greensboro does a very good job of getting to the line and they make them when get there, especially Duncan.  I think she will draw some double teams down low in an effort to help out on defense and force her not to shoot and get fouled.  The guards are good for Ferrum, but they are young and Greensboro could force close to 30 TO's in this game. (G's that get the most minutes for Ferrum actually have an A/T below one)

Outlook: Greensboro should be able to come out with the victory if they continue to do what the coach asks of them and they play within themselves.  They need to know that what they are doing is best for the team and not try for themselves.  Ferrum may be struggling, but they are pulling out wins.  Neither team should get comfortable with any type of lead.  Greensboro wins 75-60

USASouth Game of the Week:

14-1 CNU  @ 15-0 Greensboro

Summary:  History is already being made with this game, this will be the first time two ranked womenís basketball teams will take the court at Hanes Gym.  I believe this date has been circled on calendars of the coaches for quite some time now.  Some may argue who the conference rivals for these teams are within the conference, but with the level of play these teams have brought over the last few years, there is no doubt this is a conference rival game.  USASouth must have known something when the schedules were created.  This game will mark the 2nd half of Greensboro and CNUís conference schedule.  This game could mean who will get home court ďadvantageĒ for conference tournament (new rules higher seed hosts each round.)

Why CNU can win: CNU is led by All-American Guard Chelsie Schweers currently averaging 24.9 pts/g and newcomer Tiffany Davis freshman transfer from Delaware State.  CNU comes into this season as the conference favorite, for good reason.  They returned all of their starters from a sweet 16 team.  They have the experience to match-up to a very important game.  This team leads the conference in numerous categories, including PPG and FG%.   They commit the fewest amount of TOís and are #2 in A/G.  They have scored over 80pts in nearly half their games.  As of late Greensboro hasnít played very well, despite the record.  Last game at Peace they turned the ball over 31 times over the last 4 games averaging more than 6 above their season average.  When you give a good scoring team like CNU extra chances, you will make it very difficult for your team to score.  Not to mention CNU does press and could get even more TOís and easy baskets.  CNUís defense has been stellar all year long, allowing teams to shoot around 34% and score just under 55 pts per game.  Greensboro isnít the most efficient scoring team in the conference shooting just under 40% at 39.5%.  Overall with CNUís ability to score and play defense this could go into their favor.

Why Greensboro can win: Greensboro has shown some grit and found ways to make close games into routs.  Greensboro is lead by Danielle Duncan inside averaging 22.1 PPG and 7.7 REBG.  CNU and many other posters on this board seem to think CNU will struggle against Duncan inside.  I tend to agree with them on this, but it isnít Duncan, I think they will struggle with; itís the board inside presence Greensboro brings.  There are rebounding teams and then there are athletic rebounding teams.  Greensboro is the latter; they are a very hard team to get a body on, because they are quick to the glass.  Greensboro may not be the most efficient scoring team, but they are #2 in scoring team (behind CNU) lead mostly by their ability to get to the line and make their FTís.   CNUís depth is a little deceptive, 10 players averaging more than 10 minutes per game, but when the game/level of play has been closer CNUís starters play between 10-15 more minutes per game.  CNU will have to rely on the bench, and commit few fouls to stay on track.  Greensboro will continue to come after you from start to finish.

Outlook: I had a dream about this game the other night.  Neither team really shot well until I woke up. I didnít see a winner.  Greensboro is 6-1 against CNU at home going back 7 years, losing only last year.  They did play CNU tough last year despite their record.  Of Greensboroís 15 wins this year 10 have been away from Hanes gym. They will be ready to get some home games under their belt.   The game will be a Greensboro pack the gym night.  It only takes about 25 people pack that gym.  (If Greensboro really packs the gym, CNU players will be able to feel the breath of the fans they are that close.) CNU's only real test on the road so far has been W&L which they squeaked out 81-76.  CNU I think should be coming in here with a little more confidence sine they have been playing top-10 caliber basketball as of late.  Greensboro has been played some tight games (pulling them out on big runs) as of late, to teams not expected to win or compete for conference title.  CNU is not a team you can fool around with, CNU will not go away.  I donít think Greensboro has been tested like CNU will test them on Sunday.  All that said I am going to masseyratings for a score.  Massey says 74-68 in favor of Greensboro.   I will take 5 points of both teams (my dream says they didnít shoot well to start) Greensboro wins 69-63.

CNU's only real test on the road so far has been W&L which they squeaked out 81-76. I don’t think Greensboro has been tested like CNU will test them on Sunday.  All that said I am going to masseyratings for a score.  Massey says 74-68 in favor of Greensboro.   I will take 5 points of both teams (my dream says they didn’t shoot well to start) Greensboro wins 69-63.

Whats up man, to be honest with you I dont know what to say on this game. Overall, I think that bothe of these two team have thier strong points. The big thing that The Pride have going with them is that they are playing on thier home court, it will be a game for the ages I do belive. GULLETT'S outcome guess Greensboro WINS in a very hard faught game 61-59. It will be fun to be at this game so if you are in town, come on out to Hanes for a doozy @ 2:00 PM!!!!!!

Wish I could be in town for it.  I expect a huge number of people to be watching the game on video, so get that video working right.  Play by play mic is perfect, color mic needs some fine tuning (very fuzzy, scratchy at times)

I want to be up there for the conference tournament, and as always willing to lend a hand.

Congratulations to Greensboro for a big win over CNU.  I bet that the rematch at CNU will be a spirited game.  It is hard to get road wins over good teams.  I thought that Greensboro would win because Duncan would cause too many problems.  She had a good game and she opened up open looks for open 3 pt shots.  Wonder how these 2 teams will be ranked now?

Congrats to GC. I tried to follow video on my ipad. But I had family over and also had football games on. Last time I checked GC was up by 10 or more and it didn't look like CNU had any steam left. I was surprised by final score. I missed a good one.

No 1 is Jeannie Devers of Buena Vista with 3,171.
No 4 is Laurie Trow of St Thomas (MN) with 2,607.
C. Schweers is 168 points away from the next spot, or exactly 24 points per game for her remaining 7 regular season games. She is averaging 24.7 ppg so far this season, so I'd say she has an excellent chance to move into the No 4 spot before the season is out.
BTW, all the records can be found at www.NCAA.org. If you enter "records" in the seach box, you'll see a list of all the record books for the different sports.

I knew there was a reason my gut told me to watch Meredith game today.  Schweers, way to go (sorry to steal your thunder CNU85 :) ) 45 points today.  I can't believe this according to CNU's record book, most points in a game.  I thought Schweers would have broken that already.

I hope the SID's from Greensboro and CNU both nominate their school's players for the d3hoops team of the week.

Schweers for her performances this week.  Duncan for her 33 pt 11 reb game.  I hope they both get it.

Although the seeds have yet to be determined:

Greensboro, CNU, and Ferrum have all clinched spots in the USASouth Tournament. (ok not really news)

Methodist will clinch a spot with a win and a Meredith loss.

We will have a pretty good idea after this week is finished the field for the USASouth tournament.  There are tons of conference games this week. (Actually I think the 8 teams will be decided this week, with seeds to be TBD)

I didn't think it made sense. Why CNU would exclude the 35+ point performers from the actual record book seems odd.

Understandable.  The Super Bowl is over now, no excuses :) .  Headline: "Super Weekend Wrap-up" [Insert Greensboro Story] [insert other strong performances by other teams/players]

Duncan had more points than the Steelers in 20 less minutes. Had more "int's" than the Steelers too. :)

I didn't even watch the Super Bowl this year.  I felt if I watched the game the Steelers would win, it would ruin the good weekend I had. Youtube will have the commercials I missed

Big game tonight Greensboro wins, they return as conference champs, regardless of the game on Saturday. If they lose the worse they can get throughout the weekend is a share of the title.  I believe they would still be the front-runner to get the number  #1 seed if the weekend is a "bad" one.  There is still a small chance that they can lose the #1 seed if they lose both games.  (It would depend on how SU and AU finish in the standings)

As a critical opinion from tonight's game, I wonder if CNU has the depth to make a deep run in the NCAA's.  Those legs start to get tired by the 29th and 30th games of the year.

Another question is whether the USA South will provide enough in-season competition

CNU85, don't let the haters spoil your moment- you play who you play. There won't be an asterisk in the tournament record books. Great season, I for one am proud of you representing the South region. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing all of the teams in the Final Four, because each has a unique ingredient that it will bring to the Final Four soup.

Wash-U brings the national championship trophy that it has defended very well, getting through arguably the toughest quadrant of the overall bracket.  Plus, it was able to do so without its top two post players, who were injured during the past two games.  A very tight-knit unit (a pair of sisters in the backcourt, and two starters back) with a very deep and productive bench, some of whom were on the team last season.  And, Nancy Fahey has won 85% of her games in 25 years of coaching, along with a record five national titles.

Illinois Wesleyan has had a great season, capped to this point by a comeback for the ages...down 23 points at one stage in the first half, and down 9 points with 3:00 to play vs. George Fox.  The team willed it way to victory, to secure the cherished home court advantage for the Final Four...something that has eluded many hopeful hosts (no pun intended) in the past 5-10 years.  The Titans hope to continue its role as Wash-U's kryptonite, defeating the Bears in 4 of their last 5 meetings--including a 63-58 victory early this season on a neutral floor at DePauw.

Amherst returns to the Final Four after the disappointment of losing in OT to Wash-U last season, but seemingly brimming with confidence, a swagger, and a chip on its shoulder after bringing back everyone from last March.  Jaci Daignault and Sarah Layman will be tougher to beat, with last year's experience seared in their minds...and I wouldn't be surprised if every player was secretly clamoring for a shot to gain revenge and dethrone Washington in the title game.

And, then there's Christopher Newport.  I am eager to see Chelsea Schweers in action...anyone who can put up Pete Maravich-type numbers and an insane 2800+ points in a career, is worth five times the price of admission.  Pouring in 129 treys at a 51% clip this season?  Mind-boggling.  And, hey, so what if the Captains may have had the weakest quadrant?  They dispatched their first two opponents by an average of 24 points, and pulled out their last two wins against teams who were a combined 54-6.  No one handed them a free pass, so the Captains are deserving of a trip to the national semifinals.

So, let's stop sniping at every little perceived blemish of these teams, and get out and watch the games in person or watch and listen to your preferred choice of play-by-play accounts.  It should be a very memorable Final Four.

I can't wait to call the Wash-U games...and it's only Monday!  I'll be ready to leap out of my skin when Friday rolls around...

It's been a great 4 years watching this version of the Lady Captains. While it didn't end in a national championship (neither did it end that way for Wydown Blvd - just sayin) - it did end with a 60-5 record, a National Player of the Year, a 4 time all american and Barbara Davis won the d3 women's hoops Elite 88 award. This award goes to the athlete in each championship (final 4 in hoops) with the hghest GPA. Davis will graduate with a 3.92 in pyschology.

Next year we will miss the big three....Scwheers, Jessica Moore and Davis. However, the bench is tremendous and recruiting is always a strength of coach Hunter.

Congrats Lady Captains. Looking forward to next year.

Huh? In all that goodness about CNU, a small poke.... lol

Only two teams "end with a win" so I am extremely happy for CNU. Beating IWU was also a great last win for both the WashU and CNU programs.

I'm still in shock that this year's Bear squad made it to the Final Four. I said this on the UAA board, but the Bears peaked at the right time.

Newspaper article on Coach Hunter's resignation is here:
http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt-cnu-hunterresigns-0902,0,6305459.story

The abruptness of it all, along with the AD's "we never dicuss personnel matters" and his admonishment to not believe all the rumors, doesn't make it sound voluntary. I am also struck by the lack of praise and expressions of gratitude and sadness that one would expect if it were a simple retirement. That's too bad, after all Coach Hunter accomplished...

GC VS GC Tonight!!

Greensboro is the favorite in this game, but I wouldn't count anything out in a GC vs GC game.  Guilford was picked to finish to finish 2nd this year in the ODAC.  They were young last year and competed in the ODAC last season.  I think that added experience will give them a boost in this game. I wouldn't expect a score to be as one sided this year as it was last year.  However Greensboro is playing at home, if the fans show up in full force for the women's game it can be a very tough environment.  It will be the first time these Guilford players will see Hanes Gym. If Guilford can knock down a few 3's then this game could get very interesting.  I think Greensboro will be too quick tonight for Guilford.  Final score 78-62 Greensboro.

Anyone have any thoughts about how Piedmont, Maryville and LaGrange will stack up next year in the USA South Conference? I know Maryville will have all but one returner, Lagrange will probably have everyone back and Piedmont will lose Wheeler. How about Greensboro and C-N next year?

It's hard to compare strength of conference unless there is a history of cross conference games, which there hasn't been between the USASouth and the GSAC in women's basketball. However, all three teams won at least 20 games last season, and between them had only one losing season in the past 3 - and that belonged to Piedmont, currently ranked #24 by D3hoops, in the 2008-2009 season. If I had to guess, all three will be be competitive in the top half of the conference, and quite possibly immediate contenders for the conference title. Piedmont without Wheeler might even  be the weakest of the three next season...

I have watch over 100 games in this conference the past 4 years.  This conference faces some real challenges in women's basketball.  The officating in this conference is worse than high school games in Virginia.  They have some real good young female officials but the bulk of the officiating in games that do not involve the top 3 or 4 teams is just bad.  They just do not take pride in the craft.  They want to manage the outcome of games by blowing a key whistle or not calling obvious things.  I really felt bad for the players.  These players get games called more fairly in AAU or high school.  They are college athletes.  They deserve a conference that takes fairness and consistency seriously.  The USA South needs to improve by not continuing the employment of officials that time and again are not up to the task.

Some of you may already know about this. I thought I would pass along the very sad news about former CNU basketball coach and AD...CJ Woollum. I made sure I had permission from CNU before posting this. I am also posting a link for anyone who wishes to sign his guestbook. From the website Caringbridge.com I quote.....

"On July 23rd doctors found a tumor in CJ's brain. It was later identified as glioblastoma multiforme - an aggressive type of brain cancer. Surgery was completed on July 27th to remove the bulk of the tumor." A subsequent journal post indicates that CJ is now in rehab.

There is not enough room on this board to post all the accomplishments of Coach Woollum. Over 500 wins in 26 seasons. Numerous All-Americans. A player drafted by the NBA. Golf Coach. Mentor to the entire CNU Athletic department. CNU athletics grew to national recognition in just about every sport under his guidance.

Please take a moment to pray for Coach Woollum and his family!

Next week the season begins. Kind of surprise Maryville was picked second in the preseason poll. I realize preseason doesnt mean a whole lot. Just have to wait and see how it holds up. Maryville will definitely get tested early. Center is up first and #14 Thomas More folows that. Interested in seeing what anybody else thinks.

Maryville Friday night beat Covenant, which had lost once, and on Saturday beat Emory, which had not lost and is ranked #18.   Pretty impressive team, with good defense and lots of depth...playing 10-11 people in tight games.  It will be interesting to see how the Scots stack up in the USASouth but I think they will do fine.

In their most recent again, at home against St. Mary's (MD), the Captains shot better than 50% from the floor. (http://cnusports.com/news/2012/12/6/WBB_1206120525.aspx)

Maryville defeated #27 Centre in their first game, and #18 (0r #14 depending on which poll you look at) Emory yesterday. As someone previously stated, they are playing 10 or 11 deep and with not too much of a drop off. They did lose one of their post players against covenant but not sure for how long. She was on crutches at the Emory game. January will be an interesting month because the scotts will face both Ferrum and Christopher Newport at that time. Will be fun to watch.

I am new to the USASouth board, coming from the GSAC, and am a bit surprised at the lack of traffic here about women's basketball in the league.  There are three teams getting votes nationally and two of them are undefeated and nobody seems to be paying attention.  Is this the norm?

Great win by the Ladies in Silver and Royal Blue tonight. Downing undefeated Montclair St. was no easy task. But boy the 50-point second half against the nation's stingiest defense was awesome to see. Looks like a date with host and top-ranked DePauw looms on the horizon.

Interesting that CNU now gets DePaul at DePaul where DePaul beat Maryville by about the amount DePaul just beat Wash U.  CNU should be able to do a better job on the boards than Maryville did and that could help a lot.  Good luck to the Captains and the USASouth!
Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: scottiedoug on March 12, 2013, 10:12:24 am
CNU did about as well with DePauw as Maryville did.  The USASouth had three pretty good teams but is not nationally competitive yet.  It does seem stronger in women's basketball than the ODAC, which is clearly stronger in men's bb than the USASouth.  It has taken the ODAC a long time in men's to get as strong as it is, so there is always the possibility....

Maybe next year there will be a little interest on D3Hoops in USASouth women's basketball?

If you're passionate about it, just do your thing. If people don't come by, that's okay too. At least you can provide a little more information for the lurkers

I wish we could get some discussion on this board. This has been one of the strongest conferences in the South Region the last two or three years. A league that got three teams in the NCAA tournament last year. Let's get some discussion going on this years teams. Who are the best teams in the league? Maryville, Peidmont, Huntingdon, Ferrum, Greensboro, Methodist, NC Wesleyan? Any predictions? Let's see if we can't spark some discussion on this board.

Either Methodist had a really bad day or Maryville is way better.  MU comes in at 7 - 1 and has no chance against the Scots.  Looks to me like a Maryville-Ferrum league.
Title: Re: USA South Conference

I think it may be Ferrum's league in the North. I'm curious to see what happens with them and Piedmont on the 24th, Lady Lions young but never underestimate what coach Purdy teams can pull off.

I think the unexpected slide at LaGrange with abrupt coaching change and no freshman (another story or another chapter from football?) leaves the South to Maryville or Piedmont.

If Ferrum holds serve out of conference and builds up a good T25 resume, maybe get two teams in tourney this season. Three would require a lot of breaks I think but isn't impossible.

Scottiedoug,

LaGrange is a good team and I give them a very good chance winning this weekend. Remember, LaGrange is the only team to beat Ferrum and that game was at Ferrum.  It is extremely hard to play the USA South Conference schedule when you are only playing with 8 players.

Sorry for the delay this season. Here's the nonconference game stories on the four home games for Maryville College women so far this season.

For those who have had troubles with our website in the past, we upgraded at end of last basketball season to a new provider that works much better. Its a paywall but the first 20 stories in a given month are free to nonsubscribers.

Last night's game we also got a great interview with first year Sewanee coach Tom Campbell on some of his Knoxville area players, and about his thoughts following Sewanee's conf game with Centre, where he was an asst, over weekend.

Scots seem pretty solid and deep enough to compete even if someone like Mackenzie is out or having a bad day.

Maryville named pre-season # 16 by Small College Hoops D III News (whatever that is) and Mackenzie Puckett of the Scots named as one of three "Top 24" national players from the South.

Eastern Mennonite is the only other southern team named (@ # 18) and their Jess Rheinheimer named as one of the other top 24 players from the South.

Danyel Bradley of Howard Payne is also named a top 24 player from the South, never mind whether Texas really is in the South.

She should be in a good mood, having beaten Maryville last night.  She does have to visit Methodist, Greensboro, and Maryville shortly, however, and maybe that clean record in the conference will not stay that way.  Or so I hope!

IMO if she doesn't win COY it will be a shame. There are no stars on this team. Yet she finds a way for her team to win. It will be difficult to finish the regular season unscathed. IMO with no disrespect to Methodist, Greensboro & Maryville are the two toughest places for women to play in the USA South. Good Luck to the ladies from Demorest.

I think Piedmont is the toughest place for women to play, at least it has been for Maryville over the years.  I am hoping Greensboro derails the Lions and both Maryville and Piedmont win out and settle it at Maryville on the 17th.  Lots of ifs there.

If Maryville and Piedmont wind up with the same record, including having beaten each other, who hosts?

Thanks, Pat.

My understanding of the answer to my own question about who will host the USASouth women's tournament:  If Maryville and Piedmont wind up with the same record, a coin flip determines.  If Maryville and Piedmont wind up with the same number of losses, Maryville would have to play a game that was cancelled because of snow (Mary Baldwin), because otherwise Piedmont's winning percentage would be slightly higher.

So I am for Greensboro and/or Methodist beating Piedmont so when Maryville does the same, Maryville would host.  Of course Maryville needs to win every other game, too.

Greensboro beat Piedmont so Maryville and Piedmont each has lost one in the conference and play this Wednesday.  Most likely this will determine who hosts the tournament.  Should be fun.

Well, if Maryville does not pay close attention at Covenant and Piedmont wins out....   I expect the latter but think the Maryville seniors will not mess this up.   That was a very good game.  I see why the Lions have had such a good year.  They play hard and smart and clearly are well coached and motivated.  A rematch would be entertaining.

Maryville did the conference proud by defeating the winners of two conferences to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since the 1990s.  Too bad the prize is to play Thomas More, with its 62 game winning streak on their floor.  No good deed goes unpunished.

Does anyone but me think the greatly expanded USASouth makes no sense for scheduling? 18 women's basketball teams, going on 19.  If it is about travel time and distances, the conference should just say so and not pretend otherwise.

Scottie:

I assume you read our interview with Commissioner Wiggs posted off the front page but, if not, it's worth a look. It sounds like the conference is going to split into two divisions next year with eight teams on each side. It'll increase to 10/9 split in 2017-18.

My guess (and it's only that) is that each team plays the others from its division twice .  Then they'll try to find the right number of cross over games where teams play across divisional boundaries in games that count in the conference standings. But each team won't play all the others from the other division.

Depending on how many cross over games are scheduled as conference contests, there will still be room for non-conference games. Those inclined to fill those slots by leaving the area will be able to do so, while those who'd rather stay close to home can play teams from the other division can do so as non-conference games.

So in a totally hypothetical scenario...

* Team A is in the eight-team North Division this year. They play each team in their division twice (14 games) and four scheduled crossover games against teams from the South Division (18 total conference games).

* Team A then has 7 non-conference slots to fill. They could play more teams from the South Division or the same South Division teams a second time, to fill some of those slots. Those games wouldn't count in conference.  Or Team A could play someone outside the conference or region entirely.

* In 2017-18 the Conference could adjust the number of scheduled cross over games to accommodate the addition of Berea, Brevard and Pfeiffer.

I think there's enough flexibility to make it work.

I am ready for the USASouth split back into North and South conferences.

Can you imagine Agnes Scott or Wesleyan GA ever adding men? (I cannot.)

But Faulkner? Point?

Have Football affiliates from the South Conference to the "North" (USASouth) Pool A and make the split.

And how was it, Ralph?
The Division championship was something to hang a banner for.

The tourney was 4 and then 8 teams.

We were getting access to the NCAA's which has always been a steep price of admission.

(We kinda feel like red-headed step-children in the ASC.)

I wish that the NCAA had permitted us to "MAC-ify" like the Middle Atlantic Conference did in the last decade.

Maybe this is the step that the USA South takes before it does split.  You might only need 1-2 more men's schools to split and then keep the affiliate in those sports that you need.

Ralph - no chance to get the same treatment as the MAC... they have been two conferences for as long as I can remember ... and possibly far longer. Also, the NCAA has cracked down on the MAC to make it more like two difference conferences than two divisions - more and more steps are taken to make that a reality to the point that the future of the MAC is always in question (frustrated schools and other things). But no conference in the country has ever had two actual conferences inside of it's make-up with two AQs (when AQs were a little easier to acquire), so wishing the NCAA would treat another conference like the MAC is more than wishful thinking. MAC has been grandfathered into many things, but they have also been told to change their model quite a bit to fit more into what the rules of Division III really are.

Hello Dave McHugh - my husband and I will be following the MAC, specifically Delaware Valley University for 20 years.  I wish you knew how very much we've appreciated our associations with all our MAC teams, both sides.  Those six schools that left, I'm fairly sure, did so with the "grass is greener on the other side" attitude.  Now, with Catholic and Goucher, they are on that other side.  We hope that they're enjoying their league. We are still very much enjoying our MAC Freedom!

Title: Re: USA South Conference
Post by: Dave 'd-mac' McHugh on June 30, 2016, 03:14:22 pm
kate - why are you surprised? Outside of the MAC, the view of that conference is not always in a positive light. Many feel it has taken advantage of situations and the NCAA has not been stringent upon forcing the MAC to conform with the rules of Division III per two conferences. There is no other place where two conferences have one overlying executive in charge (though, the ECAC hockey conferences might have had that set-up... but they were truly different conferences with no common conference for other sports; ECAC only existed for those schools for the sport of hockey).

Wasn't there a time when the Commonwealth and Freedom sides would have their division champions play each other for the overall MAC title, yet still have two AQs? I might not be remembering that incorrectly.

Yes, the six schools who left probably did think the grass is greener, but to be honest, I am not hearing them complain in the Landmark Conference. I think they got the situation they actually wanted. The one thing I have not heard is they want to go back to the MAC (while there are schools who want out of their situation and think the MAC will take them). Only two schools have come and gone from the Landmark (Stevens who spent a hot minute in the conference and Merchant Marine) and those reasons were far more internal than conference-wide. Also, the MAC has been a turn-style for schools and programs for much of it's lifetime. Yes, there are a few originals left, but the history and number of teams that have come and gone from the MAC is extensive - granted, being around for 100 years is certainly part of that conversation.

I am not against the MAC in anyway, but it has been a thorn for many outside of the conference. The decision to split the two conferences into two different regions, especially in basketball but also in other sports, was another sign from the NCAA that they want the conferences to literally be two different entities - not two acting groups that are really a single entity.

As it pertains to the USA South - the NCAA has on many occasions pointed out it will no longer give multiple AQs to conferences no matter how big they are or how split up they make them in sports. There are several who play with divisions where two AQs are out of the question. Those conferences do eye the MAC and wonder why they get to keep their two AQs. The NCAA has stressed the MAC conferences have to be more like two different groups, but when you have a common MAC for sports like football and a common executive in charge of the entire system, that becomes difficult. Not sure if the NCAA is done pushing the MAC to make further changes or if one last change may come once Ken Andrews steps down.

Good morning Dave!  Not really the proper board for this post, but just have to say that I'm tremendously proud of our MAC diversity, both sides.  The NCAA should realize that that is precisely what makes our League strong.  The fact that other schools want to join further accentuates that.  If we were all one conference, we wouldn't have time in any given sport's season to play out of conference teams.  The phrase "like minded", I feel, should never enter into a d3 league premise.  The only "good" that does is for me childishly hoping that we beat the devil out of the teams that have departed :(!  Told you it was childish.  Anyway, that said, I still miss those trips to Scranton.  Above all, no matter what the USA Conference does - GOOD LUCK and fun competition!!!

And for you democrats: the transformative power of reengineering a fan site for small schools is what brings people together and divides them from this hateful rhetoric.  If you aren't willing to stand up for your teams, what kind of Americans are you?

People are saying: Piedmont  College quietly having big recruiting year.  Details to follow.

The focus of Division III basketball now turns towards the second Regional Rankings. At the same time, conference regular seasons are wrapping up and the pressure of conference tournaments is increasing.

Teams are still trying to jockey themselves for the chance to keep playing in March, but sometimes focusing on March causes teams to lose focus of the next game. Upsets and trip-ups seem to happen often once Regional Rankings start coming out.

On Sunday night's Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave chats with teams who are hoping to remain on top of their conference standings and thus eventually punch their ticket automatically to the NCAA tournament. But what about the distractions? What about the pressures? Or has it become somewhat routine for some teams?

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio starting at 7:00 PM ET LIVE. Maryville is the only USASouth team regionally ranked by the NCAA.  If the Scots do not win the conference tournament, they most likely will get a bid to the NCAA anyway, but it looks like neither Ferrum nor Piedmont is on the radar.

Regional rankings, right? And sadly, that won't get them in the tournament.

I agree but, if Piedmont should somehow win the tourney Maryville could still get in.

I agree that Maryville is likely to get a bid whatever happens next and Piedmont has to win the tournament.  Which I certainly hope does not happen!!  It could, though, and there are a couple more teams (i.e.,  Ferrum) that could win it.  Maryville has some injury issues that will make this interesting.

I actually think Maryville is in trouble. Their resume is not that strong especially with a weak SOS and while the women tend to not be as harsh with sub.-500 SOS numbers, Maryville is in an area of the regional rankings were at-large bids do not look good.

Scots and everyone else in USASouth are handicapped in several ways by it's being a league with several poor teams. Scheduling Thomas More was an effort to help SOS but they guessed wrong about several other teams they scheduled who have been strong but are not this year.

I guess they should just win the tournament.

Piedmont as usual is a scrappy and well-coached team. Maryville could not buy a basket.  And I must say the refs were pretty awful.  I hope the Scots get to play some more, but with Madison Maples out, they really need another shooter!!

I understand the importance of SOS math, I guess, but it is disappointing that only Lynchburg from the South Region got an at large bid to the NCAA. I realize Maryville should have just won the conference tournament, but still...

There are always a lot of games on the opening weekend of the Division III basketball season, but that doesn't always translate into headlines. Not this season. There is plenty to talk about and  Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) is the place to find out what many of it means... if anything.

On Sunday's show, Dave will not only take a look at some of the incredible streaks that were broken. With the help of several guests, Dave will also get a look at who looked best at the Great Lakes Invitational while also talking to a few teams looking for solid seasons ahead.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the show LIVE starting at 7:00 pm ET be advised, the show will not feature video until after the Thanskgiving break): http://www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2017-18/nov19. Maryville starts out on the road and loses six pretty competitive games to teams that are doing well.  Now has won four against USASouth teams, including Averett and Ferrum, which are among the better USASouth programs.  Scots have had some key injuries and lost a returning senior in a traffic accident.  They seem to be getting things together with seniors and freshmen and may turn out to be pretty good!  Scoring a lot on assists.  Nice pre-holiday finish after a disappointing start for the Scots.  Clear evidence of good coaching under challenging circumstances.

Piedmont has lots of talent returning and are sure to be competitive.

Scots let one get away and now need Piedmont to beat Berea to even this division out.  Just did not make the plays and Piedmont did.  Shields and Sullens are good players and thankfully are seniors.

So, Pfeiffer joined the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) on November 15, 2017.  I will look at the declaration list on the ECAC website over the weekend to see if the Pfeiffer Falcons are on it.

Just a reminder, if Pfeiffer fans are reading this board-- the declaration deadline for the ECAC tournament is this Friday, Feb. 16 at 4 PM Eastern.  If you don't declare, you cannot compete.

I see on the Feb. 7 regional rankings that Pfeiffer has a SOS of .435. with a d3 record of 15-2.  I guess that Pfeiffer, if they can afford a trip to Pennsylvania or Maryland for ECAC play, will find it worthy.

Update-- Nov. 15 press release from Pfeiffer announcing ECAC membership:

It is down to the final week of the regular season. It is now or never. Win the conference tournament, earn the automatic qualifier, and a team will be playing in March. Don't win it and either hold out hope for an at-large selection or the season is over.

The season continues or ends on the bounce of a ball from here on out.

So who may be in jeopardy and who is sitting pretty? On Thursday's edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), we start to read the tea leaves while also chatting with teams who are hoping to punch their ticket for the Road to Salem or Rochester themselves. Plus, we get a preview of what could be a fascinating weekend of NESCAC tournament action at Amherst.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the show LIVE starting at 7:00 p.m. ET here: http://bit.ly/2BIbiUe

- Jamie Purdy, Piedmont women's coach
- Grey Giovanine, No. 9 Augustana men's coach

Each season there are a few teams that get out to starts that makes everyone turn their heads. There are always a few "wait, what?!" "They beat who?!" And even a, "are they seriously (say record)?!"

Yes, they are. And thus we should talk to them.

On Sunday's Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), hear from a few coaches who have their teams out to blazing starts. UW-Platteville women are undefeated with wins over No. 18 Chicago and No. 4 Wartburg. William Peace women have equaled their win total from last season and defeated No. 15 Christopher Newport. And Oberlin men started undefeated and off to one of the program's best starts.

Hear from each of their coaches on what is working so well early in the season and if they can continue to surprise and steal headlines the rest of the season.

Plus, Bob Quillman and Ryan Scott return with a look at where the Top 25 now sits with the first in-season poll coming up on Monday. Find out who Bob, Ryan, and Dave select for their Dubious, Deep Dive, and Debatable selections are ahead of the Week 1 poll.

The basketball season now finds itself square in the middle of not only the holidays, but also finals. Teams are taking breaks to focus on academics and either not playing until the new year or finding openings to fit in games here and there.

And while the tempo of games subsides a bit, there is still plenty of news swirling around Division III. Tune in as Dave and guests tackle all of the news this week in what should be a jam-packed Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) on Thursday night.

Topics will include the latest news of two Capital Athletic Conference members announcing they are leaving for other conference homes. What is next for the CAC which will be down to just three members by 2021-22 season. The rumors about St. Thomas's future continue to swirl, we at least try and put some of those rumors to rest. And a MIAC president finally speaks out about the decision to push UST out the door. Maybe he should have not said anything.

Plus, there is a new number one team in women's basketball, a team that nearly completed an undefeated season has reemerged, another former champion is showing they may be back in the hunt, and a program we haven't talked about in a long time has made it known they are ready for the season.

If you look at the calendar, we are midway through the 2019-20 regular season. While there are probably more games ahead than behind for many teams, we now find ourselves looking at the half of the campaign.

What have we learned so far? Anything?

We may not be able to answer all of those questions, but we will see if we can turn over a few more rocks to find more clues on Thursday night's Hoopsville.

We will chat with a men's program that has gone from obscurity to at least being in the conference and regional conversation (if not national). Another men's program is about as high as they can go in the national convo, but do we really know how good they are and is there pressure to win it all? Plus a women's team many of you might not be talking about now, but probably will be chatting about come tournament time.

Tonight is also the season debut of the WBCA Center Court segment. We talk to Randy Tuggle, the head coach at Greensboro, on why the season is the perfect distraction for a far bigger priority. Tuggle chats with us about his battle with pancreatic cancer and how his team (and family) have been there every step of the way.

In two weeks, the regular season will be over. If teams want to still be playing in March, the time to get it done is now ... including conference tournaments, some of which start for some this week.

This week will also bring with it a better understanding of which teams are in position to be playing in the NCAA Tournaments.

Monday on Hoopsville, we will chat with several programs which have positioned themselves atop their conference races and hope home court will help them punch tickets to the NCAA tournaments. However, they also know the difference between playing at home or in the NCAAs could be a single game still to be played.

Guests Schedule (order subject to change):
- Charlie Averkamp, Benedictine women's coach
- Trent Milby, Berea women's coach
- Jake Ross, Springfield senior guard
- Dean Burrows, Wesley men's coach
- Bob Quillman & Ryan Scott, Top 25 Double-Take
