Kudos to the committee for swapping UW-Stevens Point with Carthage so that we don't have regionals with three CCIW teams or three WIAC teams.

I like seeing as many conferences represented at a regional as possible.

Seeing as IL Wes has always had NAthCon's number, that's who I'm pulling for in this regional.

I hate to say it (I hope coach Augie Schmidt forgives me), but go IWU. It will be nice to see a CCIW team in Appleton. Hopefully, Carthage can join them there. I cannot even imagine what will happen if they actually meet in the first round.

Van Cleave(Linfield)  .367/.438/.594     4 HR  38 RBI
Fuiten(Webster)       .451/.564/.782   12 HR  52 RBI
Raetzloff(Webster)   .390/.495/.786   11 HR  42 RBI

To me, this seems to be a very competitive regional.  I think any of the top 5 can win it but I definitely wouldn't put it past Webster to pull an upset or two.  IWU has a great pitching duo that could put them in a great position after two games.  What really stands out to me were the stats on the top 4 Linfield starting pitchers.  Without knowing the strengths of all the schedules it's hard to completely compare these numbers but I just though they'd be interesting to look at and give us all a few names to keep an eye on while following the games.

Linfield is coached by former Yankee 3rd baseman Scott Brosius.

I think the biggest problem with this team doing anything is that their hitters haven't faced real game situations since April 28th.  They've been off for just over two weeks.  It's kind of tough to play 2 and 3 times a week and then take a break like that and have to bring your "A" game right away.

I do like their pitching staff though.  They could surprise.

We need an on-site poster with internet access to give us some scoring updates!

This just sucks!  How can a school be awarded a regional tournament and have no live stats???  From what I can tell, this is the only D3 regional without live updates.  Shame on Augustana for not providing the service, and shame on the NCAA for not requiring this from the host school.  If the link is out there, please someone let us know (and then I'll apologize to Augustana for ripping on them).

I agree with everyone else, I really thought Augie would come through with some sort of a feed (if nothing more than score updates through D3baseball.com).

They have the capabilities to do it on-site and should have even resorted to "renting" IWU's system if they had no other options.

It is going to be a long night tonight if I have to wait until the game is over around 10:30 to get the first update!

Knarocky-

When there is baseball to keep track of, I become an awfully good multi-tasker.

Since you are still in school, and all you have is free time on your hands, why dont you make the short little drive out to Rock Island and keep us updated!

A triple play to end the game???

Illinois Wesleyan 9th - McIntosh walked. Goshorn singled to center
field; McIntosh advanced to second. Huppert pinch ran for Goshorn. Garvey lined
into triple play 2b to ss to 1b; Huppert out on the play; McIntosh out on the
play. 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 LOB.

I hate to say this, but this is becoming an embarassment for Augustana.  Apparently their game with Wartburg has been over for quite awhile, and still not even a score posted on the website.  I hope they pick up the slack tomorrow with the live stats or at least updates.  I know Augie has a beautiful facility, but this is still an embarassment, especially because they have the capability to do live stats...........

I have been following Augustana for 5 years now and have been frustrated almost every game day as the stats/game summary are never posted.  I usually find the game results from the opposing teams website way before it is even posted on the Augustana site.  Exactly, NO excuse for this in today's world.

I think they must like to group 2 or 3 games into one posting on the website.  The made some changes this year to their website and it runs very slow which is also very frustrating at times.  OH WELL!  Life goes on and so does this years Augie Baseball Team!  Great come from behind win tonight!  Going to get exciting there tomorrow night.  GO VIKINGS! ;)

not sure who was announcing the Linfield / SP game... it was painful to listen to... aside from the Cats leaving the bases loaded in the 8th (1-1 tie with no outs), and then popping up to 3rd in the 9th on the suicide sqeeze (inning ending double play)... the announcer covering the game sounded like he had never seen a baseball game in his life

"tagged out at home base"  ....   "the batter gets a hold of that one ... and the second baseman picks it up and throws to first for the out"...  He may have even been a Linfield guy... but anyone that heard the broadcast has to back me up on this...

Well I found out why Augie is not doing live stats or posting updates.  Apparently they have been trying to get cable internet installed at the field for the last two months.  Every time they make an appointment, Mediacom (the cable provider out there) cancels.  Needless to say, it didn't get done.  Dave Wrath is having to go all the way back to campus between games to post the box scores.

I feel for them, when things don't get installed when you expect them, but that's why you make Plan B's.  They've known they were hosting for two months.

This is the response I got from the Augustana's webmaster:

Our sports information team has posted the results on the tournament website (http://www.augustana.edu/x8780.xml) immediately following each game and we regret that they may have been missed by some.

In order to make these results easier for our site visitors to find, we have added links to the tournament results page from our athletics home page and our baseball home page. We hope this will help visitors find this information in a more timely manner.

Thank you for your feedback and please let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you.

Last year, despite going an unprecedented 20-1 in the CCIW and hosting the regional, IWU also went 2-and-out (including a first-round upset by Webster).  I'm afraid the Titans' postseasons are starting to be spelled "p-a-r-o-d-y". :(

Just a little more on the augie game now that the box score is out...

Soph Matt Erickson threw 8 innings giving up 1 ER.  Erickson started the year in the rotation but did not pitch much in-conference all season.  He picked the right time to have a huge game.

UWSP scored 1 in the top of the 1st.
Augie came back with single runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th to go up 3-1.
UWSP scored 2 in the top of the 9th to tie it...all with two outs.
Augie led off the 9th with a walk and then it looks like Blakeley scored him from 1st with two outs.

Got to hear parts of the Linfield/Wartburg game (I thought the announcer was fine!) Found the Webster/UWSP results on their site way before Augustana posted them.

The only details I have heard from the game are that Webster scored 5 in the 2nd inning.  Then it was 9-6 in the bottom of the 6th.

Hear the ball is really carrying, but 13-6 is a pretty deep hole to crawl out of in less than 3 innings.

Yes, Linfield, Augie, and Webster.  Neither D3Baseball.com nor the Augie regional site has Saturday's matchups yet, just the start times (noon and 3.30).  I imagine Webster will meet Linfield and the winner will play Augie (the highest remaining seed).

Engle started and worked only 1.1 innings.  He was relieved by Carlson, Dencker, Pankau, Knott, and Kulig.

Tough loss for Augie.  As I thought, their bats would play the part, but the pitching just couldn't get it done.  An impressive 5-run 9th fell just short with Blakeley stranded on 3rd.

Today will be a tough match-up for the Vikings now as they have used most of their pitching.  I would expect freshman Adam Doyle to get the start.  Doyle has had a few really good outings this year mixed into a few average ones.  Depending on how their arms recover, Mike Pagano and Eric Knott might be options after their relatively short Wednesday outings.  For Linfield, however, it looks like they have a 4th regular starter which should give them a slight advantage in that regard.

The Vikings fall 10-1 to Linfield.  Pagano got the start and lasted 3.2 innings. Augie was outhit 15-5.

Regional pairings are out. Carthage is the 1 seed in their regional at Moline, Il., which is Augustana's home facility.  Very nice field.  It is a six team regional, with Millsaps as the 2 seed and Whitewater the 3.  Concordia River Forest also made the tournament, and is in the regional in Michigan.  Former Carthage 3rd base coach of 8 years Adam Smith is in his first season as the head assistant at CURF

Fontbonne outhit Carthage 14 11. But they couldn't get hit #15 that would have tied the game.

Millsaps gets 3 in the first for a 3 0 lead after 2. Millsaps third basemen scored from first on a single to left center. The wartburg outfielders and catcher expected him to stop at third but he never even hesitated.

Unbelievable melt down by Wash U.  I've been watching WARHAWK baseball for 41 years and this was one of the strangest endings I've ever seen.  It was so bizarre I had to check play by play to remember how it happened.

Carthage was cruising and then changed pitchers.  Fontbonne nearly pulled it out.

Millsaps looks pretty good.

Unbelievable melt down by Wash U.  I've been watching WARHAWK baseball for 41 years and this was one of the strangest endings I've ever seen.  It was so bizarre I had to check play by play to remember how it happened.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 9th -
Wong reached on an error by ss.
Millar out at first 1b to 2b, SAC, bunt; Wong advanced to second.
Trepanier singled. Leavitt pinch ran for Trepanier.
Wessels fouled out to 1b.
Wong advanced to third on an error by c, scored, unearned.
Rechlitz reached on an error by cf;
Leavitt scored, unearned. 2 runs, 1 hit, 3 errors, 1 LOB.

...and remember, the play-by-play doesn't include the fact that Trepanier's hit should have been caught (miscommunication bewteen CF and 2B) and there was also a foul pop-up that, although it was scored a no-play, should have been caught also.

That one of the toughest-luck losses I've ever seen for the Wash U. kid. He was outstanding.

Wartburg won today to stay alive.  It looks like they won't play again today so I expect them to bring back Jerrold Martijn Sunday morning and that's going to be a tough matchup for someone.

Carthage and Washington are playing now with Carthage up 3-1 and Washington batting in the bottom of the 2nd.  Live Stats can be like watching paint dry when they are keeping up from batter to batter.  This deal about posting after a half inning is complete is unbearable.  I don't recall ever seeing it done that way in the past so it must be done this way by choice--a poor choice if you ask me.

It sure has been a long time since they have posted a half inning.  Has Washington retaken the lead?  Did we have a bases loaded, two out situation?  It really takes out the drama when you can't follow the play by play.  At least that won't be a problem in the 4:00 game with both teams providing coverage.

Ahh, Washington scored one to cut the lead to 3-2.  I think I'll go out for a walk.

Impressive showing by Carthage today.  21-3 final score.  Carthage had 21 runs on 21 hits, Wash U. only had one error and Carthage only had 1 HR.  Now THAT is getting it done offensively.  Carthage had 14 different guys get ABs.  Perez must have had a heck of a game too with a low pitch count as he pitched a complete game, while the offense was having long innings almost every inning.

Carthage has scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th to go ahead 6-5.

Millsaps had an uncharacteristic meltdown.

They gave up 8 runs on 5 hits and 3 errors.  There was one man LOB in Carthage bottom of the 8th.

Going to the 9th, Carthage leads 12-5.  (Six runs are unearned.)

Millsaps fails to score in the 9th.

Final -- Carthage 12, Millsaps 5.

It's my guess that Millsaps will have Drew Maddox and Tait Hendrix as the starters tomorrow.  Don't count them out on getting to Monday and in a one game situation anything can happen.

One has to wonder if things would have been different if Millsaps had played at 1 and gotten extra rest.  Maybe that had nothing to do with the meltdown at the end or maybe it was the deciding factor, especially with Aaron and Boomer coming back in to pitch after splitting the duties of the 4 o'clock game.  However, if it made a difference, it was extra rest earned by Carthage during the season as they played well enough all year to be a #1 seed.

While this now puts Millsaps on a more difficult path to the World Series, they still are capable of coming all the way back and winning three straight.  For now, they just need to win tomorrow at 1.

The winner of the first game (UWW vs Wartburg) has to win 3 on Sunday just to make it to a final game on Monday, winner getting their ticket punched to Grand Chute.  What could be more difficult than that?  :-\  Playing without a shortstop? or the centerfielder?

On the Millsaps webcast last night they mentioned the schedule and how it conflicted with the rulebook for an NCAA Regionals.  It was just a brief mention so this might not be exactly right, but they said a team can't be made to play 3 games in one day.  The impression I received was that if the winner of the 10 o'clock game won at 1, then they could choose to play a DH for the championship on Monday instead of having to play a third game of the day on Sunday.

I don't know the specifics on this and it wasn't discussed in great detail.  It what they said and what I think I heard are accurate, then Carthage may not play today unless it is Millsaps that they are playing at 4.  If the rule does say that a team has such an option, it would be stunning if a team would elect to play 3 on Sunday while knowing that to win the regional they would still have to play on Monday.

From Augustana web site:

NCAA rules do not allow a team to play three games in one day during the NCAA Baseball Tournament. If the winner of Game 8 between Wartburg and Wisconsin-Whitewater should beat Millsaps on Sunday afternoon, the Game 10 matchup with Carthage will be pushed back to 11 a.m. Monday morning, with Game 11, if necessary, to follow at 2 p.m. If Millsaps wins Game 9, it will face Carthage as scheduled at 4 p.m. Sunday.

That would be Aaron Dott, who GBMAN speculated on earlier.   ;)  He shutout Carthage 9-0 on 4 hits back in March.  I believe Carthage also had something like 11 errors in the two games these two teams split in Florida...

Regardless who the pitcher is for UWW, he's going to have to do a yeoman's job as Carthage is really swinging some hot lumber!!

Thanks for the info.  If WW wins the first game, it'll be interesting to see who Carthage throws the second game.  Jordan threw 6 innings Thursday, so I'd assume he could be ready today on 3 days rest.  Who knows though, the top 3 have gotten a week off between starts the past 2 months.  I'd have to guess that's who they'd go with.  I believe the plan is to start freshman pitcher Rohe in game 1.  Now that its 9 and both teams are probably at the ball park already, it should be fine to share this information  :P

Well Whitewater leads 4-2 as they head to the bottom of the 8th inning.  I will say that if Whitewater can hold on, I am not surprised that Dott was able to beat Carthage.  However I can't see Whitewater winning Game #2.  Carthage will be able to come back with one of their studs on the mound, while Whitewater will be short-handed.

1-1 in the first with BV and IWU.

Can Pankau shut down the BV bats today? If IWU can steal a win today, I like their chances the rest of the way.

Middle of the 4th - still 1-1.

Titans have only 2 hits, but one was a HR by McIntosh.

Pankau has held BV to 3 hits thru the first 3 innings.

Another 1,2,3 inning for Pankau in the 4th.

I like what I'm 'seeing' so far - Pankau yielded 2 hits and a run in the first, 1 hit in the second, has retired everyone since then.

Now if the Titan bats can wake up!

"Ask and ye shall receive!"

Titans get a run in the top of the 5th - on ONE single.  (single, sac. bunt, BV error)

At the end of 8, still 2-1 for IWU.

Pankau has not yielded a hit since the second inning!  C'mon, just three outs to go!

Final:

IWU 2
Buena Vista 1

Time of game = 1:37 (wow)

A big-time performance by IWU ace Jason Pankau - 9 IP, 1 ER (4 hits, 0 BB).  That makes 3 complete games in a row for IWU pitchers (Kabbes, Sweeney, now Pankau).

Great win for the Titans.

The Titans win game 1 2-1 behind a tremendous outting by Pankau.  He has been great all year and continues to be great going 9 innings allowing 4 hits, only 1 after the 3rd inning, striking out 6, and leaving the tying run on third base in the 9th.

IWU, with a deep rotation, puts themselves in a good spot for the rest of this regional.  Another note, with Pankau only allowing 4 hits and 0 bb, I would assume his pitch count remained low and should be able to come back later in the week if they would need him.

Great start for the CCIW-been a few years since IWU won a playoff game.....maybe being a 6 seed really took the pressure off of them and let them play relaxed.

Titans will play the loser of tonight's game (Ripon vs. Webster) at 3:30 tomorrow.

Considering the circumstances, that has got to be Pankau's best game ever - ONE hit after the second inning!

Titans are staring down the barrel of a 2-0 start in the regional. I'd take them over either team tomorrow.

I am not a SLIAC hater. I am a realist and IWU is really playing well right now. They just knocked off the #1 seed... why wouldn't I take them to beat the #3/4 seed tomorrow?

Just because I do not stroke the ego of the SLIAC does not mean I am a hater. I am a CCIW guy, plain and simple. In fact, read my Central Region preview and you will see that I listed Webster as the Conderella of the Central Regional.

True. But I am very happy to be wrong. Pankau stepped up today. IWU needs to get the bats going if they want to stick around until the weekend.

Here is what I said about IWU:

Most likely to disappoint:: Illinois Wesleyan. How is it possible for a No. 6 seed to disappoint? Then Titans have underachieved all season long and appear to have finally put things together. They have very good pitching, but have been hamstrung by the CCIW's worst batting average (.285). IWU has had a bad habit of wasting great pitching performances by scoring very few runs for their pitchers.[/b]

IWU got a great pitching performance and scored few(2) runs. IWU did what I said they would and almost wasted Pankau's gem.

By somewhere around 2 tomorrow, the game intended to kiss goodbye to the 5th or 6th seed will mark the end for either the #1 or #2 seed.

Crazy tourney, yet most posters (unlike the NCAA) foresaw IWU and RHIT going deep.

Just wanted to post some players stats from yesterdays Webster vs. Ripon game.
Webster:
 Will Savage: 9.0IP  4H  0R  0ER  3BB  6K - Pretty good day for him. He now posts a 9-0 record.

 Victor Valdez 2-5 3rbis
 Zach Little  2-2 2runs scored

According to the tourney website, the IWU/Ripon game is currently on hold due to rain.  Anyone know more about the weather there?

According to Yahoo Weather, things don't look real promising for resuming today, though rain should end by tomorrow afternoon.  If the tourney gets pushed back a day, the players are in for a shock on Sunday - sunny and 93!

If I'm interpreting (and correctly predicting the make-up schedule) correctly, looks like, win or lose, IWU has a day-night DH tomorrow (game 5, then game 7).  If so, I sure hope game 7 is the 'winners showdown' to be in the driver's seat! ;)

I assume they will just go for games 5, 6, and 7 tomorrow, or will they try to get in four games to begin catching up?

If they are starting at noon, there's no way they can get four games in. I'd guess just 5, 6 and 7 tomorrow.

I hope the NCAA realizes that they can't possibly cram the rest of the tourney into 2 days.  As the schedule reads now, if IWU wins tomorrow to eliminate Ripon, then the BV or the Webster/RHIT loser would have to win 4 games on Saturday to advance to the World Series.  That is completely unfair when there is a built-in rain day for these tournaments.  I can't think of any reason to at least delay the "rematch, if necessary" game till Sunday.....well, I guess except the hotel rooms for the two teams so that must be the reason.

Sunday's looking pretty likely, because I believe the NCAA doesn't allow a team to play more than twice in a day. Not positive, but I think that's the rule.

Looks like the regional website is mistaken.  According to that schedule, a team could possibly play 4 consecutive games tomorrow at 10:00, 1:30, 5:00, & 8:00.  I thought that sounded absurd.

OUCH!  IWU has reverted to the sloppy team of most of the season instead of the dangerous team of late.

Ripon scored four unearned runs in the top of the second on two walks, two errors, and ONE hit - a 3-run HR. :(

Now 5-0 going to the bottom of the second.

The tourney site has been updated.  The schedule dansand posted is correct - IWU vs. the Webster/RHIT winner is tomorrow at 11, not tonite at 7 as earlier listed.  This makes more sense - what used to be Friday is now Saturday, and Saturday has been moved to Sunday.  (While us retired guys could care less, I bet many of you wish Mondays could so easily be moved! ;D)

"Game of a lifetime" may be a little of an overstatement.  If he had 1 or 2 HR's on the seaon, it would be a little more surprising.  Valdez had 14 HR's coming into today's game.

Picks for tomorrow..

Game 1- Webster (This really goes against all my common sense (IWU is much deeper in pitching) but I picked Webster to the win the tournament and they really need this win if they want to win the whole thing.)
Game 2- Buena Vista
Game 3- BV over IWU (Again this goes against common sense, but I picked BV to finish 2nd.)

I am NOT taking the game for granted (even the best pitchers get 'lit up' now and then), but I like our chances.

Here is the explanation of the mascot name Gorlok. (http://www.webster.edu/southcarolina/gorlok.htm)   It's the combination of two streets that intersect on campus -- Gore and Lockwood.

I wonder what North Park's mascot would be if we used the same logic (Foster & Kimball Avenues) -- the Foskims?  The Fosballs?  I'll stick with "Vikings," thank you very much.

* John DuHadaway (Webster #3) - 4-1 (8 starts), 6.16 ERA, 38 IP/36K, .270 BAA

* Brent Kulavic (IWU #3) - 4-2 (10 starts), 5.37 ERA, 68 IP/73K, .330 BAA

(Both are seniors.)

http://www.iwusports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1172&path=baseball

Webster is coming off 2 complete game pitching performances.  Their entire bullpen is fresh, including their best reliever, Bryan Stanley.  He has great numbers:

8-2 (0 starts), 2.08 ERA, 43 IP/52 K, .192 BAA

DuHadaway does not pitch deep into games at all.  It's probably safe to say the Titans will see a lot of Stanley.  On paper, I really don't see a pitching advantage for IWU (Kulavic pre-Tommy John surgery, absolutely).  Seems like the starters are pretty even, but Stanley could be the X factor for Webster.  I'd bet IWU has more bullpen depth, but Stanley might be the best bullpen arm of the two teams.

Bigpoppa good to see you FINALLY cheering for a SLIAC team.. You cant honestly say they were your cinderella.. Espically with a CCIW team still in it. and Ypsi, I would take Kulavic pre tommy john. POST TJ will hands down go to DuHadaway.. I will tell you right now he will not throw websters 3rd complete game, but count on stanley to come in and slam the door shut.  I would also like to say, I called Webster destroying the competition in this tourney.. COUNT on them making their first appearance in appleton.

is it against the rules to cheer for a team you like on these boards? Why dont you just give them the national championship too? Well that would be great but there will be some good competition at the world series.. sorry that webster is doing work in the region and all the cciw teams have CHOKED except IWU... get over it.

I wouldn't say the CCIW teams choked. Carthage was beaten twice by the defending national champ and NCC just ran out of gas three weeks ago.

As for the cinderella of mine being Webster, if you'd read the Central region previe, I picked Webster to be the Cnderella (and also IWU to disappoint).

Webster is playing like they have all season and IWU is FINALLY playing to its potential.

Webster draws first blood in what is looking like a pitchers' duel.  4 singles in the top of the 4th (after only a lonely single in the first 3) produced 2 runs.  IWU has but three singles in the first 3 innings.

Going to the bottom of the 4th, Webster 2, IWU 0.

DuHadway's day is finished; a single, walk, two fielder's choices, and another single have produced one run and men on first and second with two outs.  As predicted, Stanley is the reliever.

Webster still ahead, 2-1.

Despite the rude greeting by Zach Scott, it looks like Stanley is as advertised.  Titans go 1,2,3 in the 5th.  After 5, IWU 4, Webster 2.

If Scott keeps it going, the Titans need some 2008-vintage Kulavic!

TITANS WIN!!!  Final is 8-3, but without that 8th inning cushion, I would've been VERY nervous.  After getting the first two batters easily, Sweeney yielded two singles and a walk to load the bases, before striking out the final batter.  Can't the Titans ever do things the easy way?!

Now to sit back and rest while BV, RHIT, and Webster eliminate each other.  Does anyone know if Pankau will be available tomorrow?

IWU will send senior Paul Kabbes (2-4, 4.22 earned run average) to the mound today with ace Jason Pankau ready for relief or a possible second game. IWU and Pankau beat Buena Vista, 2-1, in a first-round game on Wednesday.

IWU missed out on a HUGE first.  A single, walk, and two more singles produced a run and the bases still loaded with no outs.  But Hopp hit into a DP, then Grodecki popped out.

Still, they got as many runs in the first as they got the whole game on Wednesday!

IWU 2, BV 0, end of one.

A walk and four singles in the bottom of the third, and IWU takes a 5-0 lead.

Kabbes has only yielded one hit (a single in the first) in three innings.
Title: Re: BB: 2010 Rock Island IL (Central) Regional

Kabbes mostly escaped his first jam.  A walk and a single put runners at the corners with no outs.  An infield pop-up followed by two flies, got one run in, but that's all.

5-1 going to the bottom of the 4th, and Probasco has been chased - what a differnce from Wednesday!

Johnston didn't get started much better than Probasco, yielding a double and an RBI single to the first two batters he faced, but then BV got the DP.

6-1 after four.

Cool.  I hadn't even noticed yet that they were at IWU this year.  With H-to-H tie-breaks against 3 of the other 4 contenders (haven't played the 4th yet), I'm hoping IWU will also host the conference tourney.

Not that that helped much in 2007! :(  [For those for whom that was too obscure (or in case I got the year wrong! :P), IWU went an all-time conference best 20-1, hosted both the conference and regional tourneys, and went 0-2 in each! :o  Last year they barely made the conference tourney, and won the CWS.  I'm having serious doubts as to the importance of the regular season (as long as you get a chance to MAKE the postseason).

Looking it over:

Thomas More is loaded with bats. .351 avg, 38 HR, a guy with 17 HRs. They look like they can hit with the best of them.

Coe has 90 SBs to this point. WOW!

IWU's Jason Pankau has two losses (how?) with his 1.48 ERA.

Here are my players to watch:

Buena Vista:            Brad Blum (.378, 18 SBs)
      Michael Hoffman (..327, 16 2B, 44 RBI)

Carthage:    Will Hodges (.399, 14 2B, 8 HR)
      Danny Dahm (4-0, 3.36 ERA)
      Joey Aiello (.357, 35 runs)

Coe:       Nick Stein (386, 8 HRs, 15 2B, 23/24 SBs)
                                Wade Morris (10-2, 2.47 ERA).

Illinois Wesleyan:    Kevin Callahan (.405, 14 HR, 49 RBI)
      Jason Pankau (7-2, 1.48 ERA, 82 K)

Ripon:                   Nick Beaman (.407, 12 2B, 44 RBI)

Thomas More:         David Kennett (.435, 7HR),
                               Sam Schmeltzer (.422, 49 RBI)
                               Andrew Thole (.401, 17 HR, .918 slugging, 52 RBI).

Coach Martel has done this in the past and it has back fired big time.  I do not see him making that mistake again.

In 2007 as the #1 seed, he started Jesse Foster instead of All American Matt Aronson and they lost 11-7 to # 6 seed Webster.

The problem with not using your best arm in round one is this: Many lower seeded teams are average at best but only get in invite because they have one stud arm that rarely loses(which makes them an above average team when he throws). The top seeds generally run into that stud arm in round one and need to bring their best right back at them. Now... in rounds two and three, this may be a different story.

Coe can stick it with the best of them.  Nick Stein will be one of the top 3 players at this tournament, covers ground in CF with a plus arm, has great speed on the bases, and hits with great pop.  Coe will struggle because their pitching is very average.  Morris is by no means a shut down pitcher, Baranowski is a thumber, and Raisch struggles to throw strikes at times.

I love Coe, but don't think they will be able to get through a regional field due to a lack of arms.

Buena Vista is as cold as any team in this.  They lossed to Wartburg (with Watson), snuck by Luther, and lossed to an average Simpson pitching staff.

As ridiculous as this might sound Buena Vista is a very dangerous team.  They have got to be feeling lucky to even be invited, but are capable of throwing a lot of good arms on the hill.  Their lineup is top to bottom respectable (besides Case in the 9-hole) but lacks the star player.  Kloewer is very good, as is Blum, but Hoffman and the rest of the squad did not surprise me too much.

Good luck to the Central Region teams.  I'll be pulling for the IIAC, but wouldn't mind seeing another central team take it.  Rooting against the non-central squad from Thomas More.

Ironically, quite similar to my regional preview set to hit later today/tomorrow. I see Coe struggling, even if they win their first game. And BV is a SCARY team if they ever put it together. Carthage bullpen has been inconsistent and IWU has a stud arm, and a few others a bit above avg one. I think Ripon will be overmatched from the start and  Thomas More is scary-good at the plate.
Title: Re: BB: 2011 Central Regionals (Bloomington, IL)

There are two reasons why Buena Vista is scary.

First, they play well in the field.  While their fielding percentage may not suggest it, they are solid all around, with players capable at every position.  Their biggest hole in the field is on the mound, with some poorly fielding pitchers (11 errors from pitchers)

Secondly, they can run a lot of different arms to the mound.  They had 9 pitchers throw at least 20 innings, almost all capable.  It should be mentioned that the injury to Wuebker hurts their chances of winning the region. (no pun intended)

Looking forward to the Thomas More vs. IWU game in round one.  Classic case of good vs. evil (and by that I mean hitting vs. pitching).  I have to agree with the above that there's no way Pankau doesn't pitch game 1.

If More can get past Pankau, who will stop them??  Don't know a lot about them, but any team that's hitting .350 as a unit has to be taken seriously.  They didn't really play anyone all season so that might come back to haunt them in this regional.

I am sure a fan of every team might say this, but I think IWU has 0% chance to win the regional if they are unable to win the first game against Thomas Moore.  This is a team that has very little pitching depth after Pankau.  Sweeney is a good #2 option, but after that, it is a severe drop off.  Again, I am sure a lot of teams could say that, but this Titans team is not a team that has typically put up a lot of runs.

While I largely agree with your post, I think you are being a bit overly harsh - ZERO %! :o  Joe Sweeney was NATIONAL pitcher of the week two weeks ago; Nick Mehn is 6-2 with an era under 4, and even Eric McCollough is 3-0 despite an era over 6 (which kinda negates your 'problems scoring' point).  NCC was in first place in the conference when IWU swept them by a combined 31-2 - good pitching AND good scoring. :D

They're in deep doo-doo if they drop the opening game (as would be anyone ;)), but they would not be utterly hopeless.

BigPoppa:  First, a slight correction.  This is not Coe's first trip to the NCAA playoffs.  They went previously in 2006 as the AQ from the IIAC.  They went to the Regional and beat St. Thomas, before falling to the eventual D3 runner up Stevens Point.

One thing I will say about Coe that most people probably don't know.  They have and OUTSTANDING record against teams that were ranked in region throughout the season.  They went 3-0 vs BV, 4-0 vs Simpson, 2-0 vs Bethany Luthern, 1-1 vs Wash U, 1-1 vs Aurora for an 11-2 record against ranked teams (which is one of the secondary criteria for Pool C discussions and probably a final nail in the discussion for the regions #1 seed).  Throw in going 5-0 against a very good Wartburg team this season and Coe is as prepared as anyone for being here.  They have three very good starters and one of the best closers in the country.  We'll see if that is enough.

I wasn't trying to be inflamatory with my post, I just figured it was an oversight.

Either way, the main point for me, that while not having a stable of flame-throwing arms, Coe has a good enough staff to have an .846 winning percentage against the kinds of teams they are going to face in this regional.

At this point, if you are left standing, you have a pretty solid pitching staff. It is hard to make it through the season without it. Many of the regionals come down to who has the best 3/4 starter to get them back to their #1 on Saturday.

#2 Carthage vs #5 Buena Vista- 3:30 (Carthage wins 9-3... Redmen bats are rolling right now)
#3 Thomas More vs #4 Illinois Wesleyan- 7:00 (IWU wins it 4-2... One word, Pankau)

There are a couple of problems with having pitchers that pitch to contact and do not strike a lot of guys out. One is that it puts a significant amount of pressure on your defense, often in high pressure situations. Two is that there is a large element of luck that can go in your favor or against (ground balls that find holes).

All teams need to play exceptional baseball to win a regional, but eliminating those things I mentioned can only help your chances.

I think Baranowski was the #1 going into the season, but Wade Morris has been their best most of the season.  Wonder if they wanted a Sr. on the mound in game 1?  Judging by the box score it would have been fine if the Kohawks could have put more then 2 on the board.  Loosing 3-2 is not a pitching and D  problem, the Ripon pitcher just must have been better because he shut Coe down.

Coe doesn't have an ace.  Baranowski, Morris and Raisch are all pretty equal.  None of them are dominate enough to be called an "ace"

Kohawk is right.  Coe does not have an ace, with that being said, they threw Baranowski in round one of the IIAC tournament as well I believe.  I would have been surprised if anyone other than Baranowski threw round one

Answer: No, Coe did not throw off.

Still scoreless after 5; each team has 2 hits.

The bottom of the 5th was scary.  Pankau finally gave up his second hit, he was bunted to 2nd, a passed ball got him to third with only 1 out.  Jason walked the next batter, and got the following batter to hit into a double play! ;D

Bridgewater State in New England. Their ace had the best numbers of anyone in the tournament coming in, and shut out Tufts.

The Titans finally broke through in the top of the 6th.  Aaron Carmack got the first two batters, but Kevin Callahan went long!  Czarnowski followed with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on McDermott's single.  Titans up 2-0.

If Pankau can keep it going, that may be all they need (not that I would object to a bigger cushion)! ;D

Dang - TM comes right back in the bottom of the inning.  A single, double, single results in two runs.  Another single led to the man on second getting greedy and being thrown out at the plate for the third out.

At the end of six it's a new game - 2-2.

We'll see if the sixth was a blip and we go back to a pitchers' duel, or if the floodgates have opened.

For now, back to the pitching duel - Carmack yielded two walks, but no hits or runs; Pankau gave up a single, but he died on second.

Still 2-2 after 7.

Carmack left after 7, but Etscheid is continuing the magic - yielded a walk and a HBP, but no hits or runs.  Pankau allowed singles to the first two batters, but nothing further.  Still 2-2 after 8.

I'm getting nervous, though - for the first 5 innings, Pankau yielded 2 hits; the next 3 he's yielded 7 (and his pitch count must be getting way up there).

Bad news: Etscheid goes another hitless inning.

Good news: a walk, another walk, a throwing error, a passed ball, and an intentional walk to Callahan, yields a run anyway (and leaves the bases loaded)!

Going to the bottom of the ninth, IWU up 3-2.  Pankau still in - hold 'em, Jason!

IWU WINS!!

That got scary: after getting the #7 hitter to ground out, Pankau yielded a single to #8 and hit #9 (you do NOT hit the #9 batter in the bottom of the ninth in a one-run ballgame!), but he then got the lead-off man to hit into a game-ending DP! ;D

IWU completes the day's sweep by lower-seeded teams.

I am sure Buena Vista is very excited to matchup with the Titans in order to get some revenge for last year.  IWU was able to defeat Buena Vista twice in the regional in 2010.  I hope Sweeney is up to the task today.

Worth noting, BV did face Sweeney for a couple of innings in the Regional Championship game last year.  I would assume it will be Sweeney on the bump for tonight's game.

Carthage's loss last night was painful to "watch." Terrible defense, lack of hitting and Perez did not bring his best stuff to the mound.

I'd guess that Carthage turns to Danny Dahm today, who, to me, looks like their #1. Perez has thrown all of the big game series openers, but I think Dahm has been much more effective on the season. With their backs against the wall right now, Carthage needs to come out with an attitude right from the start.

Not really.  Maybe a grounder off the pitcher's glove that the second baseman picked up and threw to first.  The pitcher gets credit for an assist on the play.

The winner of that game would move to game #11 which is the Championship game.  The winner of game 8 (Carthage v Thomas More) would play the loser of game 9, which under your scenario would be Buena Vista.

BV by virtue of being the last unbeaten.

BV by virtue of being the last unbeaten.

From the manual:

If five teams remain after Game 6, the following procedure will be observed:
Game 7—Loser Game 5 vs. Loser Game 6
Game 8—Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5   (Carthage v Thomas More)
Game 9—Winner Game 6 vs. Winner Game 7   (IWU v BV)
If two teams remain after Game 9, the following procedure will be observed:
Game 10—Winner Game 8 vs. Winner Game 9
Game 11—If necessary, same teams as in Game 10
If three teams remain after Game 9, the following procedure will be observed:
Game 10—Winner Game 8 vs. Loser Game 9
Game 11—Winner Game 9 vs. Winner Game 10

Carthage moves on to the final day of the regional with a 10-4  win over Thomas More.

Rohe went 8, giving up 10 hits, 3 ER, and striking out 9
Hodges and Soderlund both went 4-5.  Hodges had 3 RBIs.

Two wins to get to Appleton for the 3 teams remaining in the region.

Very surprised to see Martel go with Kerber to start this game.

Freshman with only 4 appearances and 10 innings is not normally his style.

Kerber looks up to it so far.  He gave up two singles in the first, but no runs; he went 1,2,3 in the 2nd.

Going to the bottom of the 2nd, still scoreless.

Titans draw first blood, lead 1-0 at the end of two. :)

Titans scored again in the third, but BV got 4 in the 4th (knocking out both Kerber and Hayn - Frueh is now pitching).  BV up 4-2 after 4.

It's looking grim in B'town. :(  Frueh got roughed up in the 6th (Kopp now pitching).  BV up 6-2 at the end of 6.  Titans still have only 4 hits - bad time for the bats to go cold.

After 7, still 6-2.

Final from Bloomington: BVU 7, IWU 6

The Titans rallied for 4 in the bottom of the 8th to tie it, but the Beavers scored one in the ninth and held on for the victory.

Alas, the season ends. :(  Anthony Kopp deserved better - he was the most effective of the Titan pitchers today, but he takes the loss.

BV is now 3-0, with all three wins against the CCIW. :o  Revenge is sweet, Carthage - go get 'em twice!

I confess that I underestimated BV (like the selection committee ;)); I am having trouble registering that we lost to them twice. :(

I'm baffled by the choices of some starting pitchers.  Thomas More started their best reliever after he'd pitched 1+ innings in the previous two games.  IWU started a pitcher with 10 innings of work (instead of McCullough, who had several starts during the season).  Of course, I don't know all the thinking that went into these moves -- match-ups, injuries, hunches, gambles, saving your ace for the next game, etc.  But it would seem that you'd go with proven starters at this point of the season.

IWU used 4 pitchers, none of them McCullough.  I don't know, but I'd guess he must be hurt.  IF they had prevailed today, I assume Pankau would have returned tomorrow.

Kerber looked like a good choice for the first three innings.

Nice season by the Wesleyan 9.  Too bad they couldn't pull it out today.

Ypsi- I guess since the "world is ending tomorrow" it is just another sign of the end of times ;D

If the world ends, does the regional winner still get to go to Appleton? ;D

(Alas, the question is irrelevant for my team. :()

With no outs in the bottom of the third, BV takes a 4-3 lead with two singles and a HR.

No further damage by BV in the third; in the top of the fourth, Carthage ties it at four, but squandered a golden opportunity: with the bases loaded and 1 out, Joey Aiello hit into a DP. :(

A good omen for Carthage?  After four innings in the field, BV has 3 errors; after 3, Carthage has none.

It's the top of the 8th, and BV just brought in their third pitcher of the half-inning!  BB, HBP, BB, and fielder's choice, means a run in, men on first and third, and only 1 out (notice NO hits required!).

BV's 4th error of the day brings in another run, still 1 out, men at first and third (STILL no hits!).

WOW!  BV's 5th error brings in two more runs (and STILL not hits; 4 runs!).

OMG, after 3 days of near perfect baseball, BV has completed imploded!  Their SIXTH error (3 on consecutive plays), brings in yet another run - now 12-7!

After all that, BV gets a DP to end the carnage.  How often have you seen 5 runs on no hits?! :o

We'll see if Luke Watson can make the lead stand up.

Let's play two!!

Luke Watson finishes off an heroic performance - he pitched the last four innings, yielding two hits and two (unearned) runs.

The final is 12-7.

I'll be missing the final game (alas) due to a prior commitment.  Since BV was the home team for the first game, will Carthage be home for the final, or do they flip a coin?

Coin flip...team who was home team prior calls it.

Carthage puts up 5 runs in the top of the first on 3 hits.  BV started a sophomore, but after a couple of hits and a couple of walks, they went back to Probasco who held Carthage to one run in game 2 of the regional.

Freshman Sam Wilhelms on the bump for Carthage.
