Title: South Region Rankings and Playoffs
Post by: Ralph Turner on January 06, 2009, 07:53:22 pm
The South is so geographically dispersed that it is hard to assess the various teams.  We are still four weeks away from the first release of the Regional Rankings.

I have started this thread to give us a chance to learn what is happening in the various conference races. As the Regional rankings are released, then we can comment on them.  When the playoffs come, we can continue the discussions here, also.

Great idea. I hope the ASC gets some respect when the rankings do come out.

The ASC has one more weekend (1-2 games) of full inter-divisional crossover play.

On the East, UT-Dallas, UT-Tyler and LeTourneau have joined Mississippi College as the premier teams.  UOzarks has four solid seniors, each of whom scored in double figures in a 82-79 loss.  Even Louisiana College has a great contender for player of the year in Josh Johnson.  Finally, ETBU lurks in the spoiler role.

Current records in the ASC-East...  Key games are noted.

Ralph, I'm not sure if Trinity's loss to UW-Stevens Point is an in-region loss.  I had Trinity with a 6-0 record against other South Region Teams.

Yes, Trinity and UW-SP are in Administrative Region #4 (TX, OK, MO, IL, WI and westward.)

There are four components to "in-region".

1) New legislation (later this year) will automatically make conference games in-region in all sports.  (This has been an issue in some sports for multi-region conferences.)
2) In the respective Evaluation Regions (TU is in the South).
3) The 200-mile radius rule.
4) Administrative Regions.

As always, check the Handbook (http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/champ_handbooks/basketball/2009/3_mbasketball_handbook.pdf).  ;)

Awesome, that clears things up. Thanks!

Not nearly as much as dumping the increasingly irrelevant "in-region" v. "out-of-region" distinction.   :P

I don't know much about some of these teams.  I've heard that LeTu is pretty tough this year.  What's their story?  I don't remember the last time LeTu was one of the top teams in the region.

Cut and pasted from the Top 25 Board...

A word about the South region...

I have started a South Region Rankings and Playoff thread to tide us over until the Regional Rankings are released on February 4th.  South Region Rankings and Playoffs

As I researched the rankings, I found these "criteria" gems.  (W/L Records are listed by overall/ in-region/ conference.)

1) RMC (ODAC 10-3/9-0/4-0) undefeated in-region but non-region losses to W&J and DeSales.  Has most of the "meat" of the ODAC schedule ahead of it, but RMC only plays Guilford, Roanoke and EMU once in conference play...easier than expected!

2) Trinity (SCAC-West 12-1/10-1/5-0) beat rival Southwestern on the road on Friday night; must go to Centre and DePauw but catches Oglethorpe at home (crossover single round robin).  OT loss at home to UWSP in November, but has home win over ASC-West foe UMHB.  TU might easily go 23-2 overall/20-2 in-region!

3) UTD (ASC-East 12-1/10-1/7-1) destroyed Guilford 64-48.  That was the lowest Guilford offensive output that I could find this decade (corrections appreciated). The Comets play a beautiful brand of half-court ball.  Very smart, mature players.  They do not beat themselves.  Have a crossover win over UMHB and a road loss to McMurry.  The ASC-East is very tough and balanced this season.  (ASC-East perennial power Mississippi College is tied for 4th this morning after crossover play!)  I think that UTD will lose two road games in the East and go 10-2.  The ASC-East winner hosts the 8-team post-season tourney!  In-region record might go 20-3 and 22-3 overall.

4)  Roanoke (ODAC 12-1/8-1/4-0) has an in-region split with Muskingum (OAC).  Plays Guilford tomorrow night at home and goes to the Quakers on Jan 28th.  Other ODAC games include hosting VWC and going to EMU whom they beat last night.  Currently 12-1 overall /8-1 in-region /4-0 conference with 12 conference games remaining.  ODAC fans...any prognostications on Roanoke in their next 12 games?

5)  Guilford (ODAC 10-2/ 9-2/ 3-0 ) has an in-region win over UT-Tyler (neutral floor) and the loss at UT-Dallas.  They also have a loss in December to NCWC, but wins over Averett, Greensboro and Methodist.  The Quakers have a non-region win over McDaniel.  The ODAC schedule includes the Roanoke game tomorrow night, the Roanoke road trip on Jan 28th, and at EMU on February 11th.  Comments ODAC fans.

6T) NCWC (USAC 9-3/4-1/0-0) has 12 conference games to play.  Their non-region losses include home loss 87-96 to St Vincent, and at mediocre Neumann, 71-73.  NCWC lost to the Marlins at Virginia Wesleyan 59-84.  The in-region wins include HSC, E&H, Guilford and Mary Washington.  Who gets into the rankings from the USA South is still up for grabs, as USAC play begins on Tuesday.

6T)  LeTourneau  (ASC-E 9-4/8-2/7-1) is in a 3-way tie in the ASC-East.  LETU has a very athletic team with in-region losses to UWW 58-69 and McMurry 63-65.  The LeTU in-region (non-conference) win was over Lake Forest. The ASC-East is so strong that Mississippi College, who has an exhibition win over D-1 Alcorn State, is tied for fourth.  ASC-East double round robin play begins this week. The one (UT-Dallas, LeTourneau, UT-Tyler or Mississippi College or even UOzarks) who  earns the conference post-season tourney by winning the division will have been battle-tested.

8 ) McMurry (ASC-West 8-4/7-2/7-1) has a 3 game lead on UMHB (which beat UWW 73-67 in December) and Concordia-Austin in the ASC-West.  Non-conference games were at D-1 UTSA and at D-1 Texas State and then in Las Vegas with a 66-69 in-region loss to CCIW's North Central and a win over St Vincent PA 82-78 (common opponent with NCWC).  After a 3-3 start, McMurry has gone 5-1 (loss to D-1 Texas State).  The in-region loss was at UT-Tyler in the 4th game of the season.  McMurry has in-region wins over LeTU, UT-Dallas and Mississippi College. They have thirteen regular season games remaining.  In the conference tourney, West #1 will open against East #4, which could be anyone of five strong teams.

Comments are appreciated.

Roanoke 80, Guilford 76 (http://www.roanoke.edu/athletics/mbball/0809box/rc-guil1.htm)

Roanoke's in-region is now 9-1  (.900).

Guilford drops to 9-3 (.750).

The ODAC should wreak some carnage!

Hey Ralph,

Talked to Patrick Stewart tonight. He said hello and only had good things to say about you. And I verified that he was one of the best hockey players to have lived in Abilene.  Plattsburgh had a big win tonight(much needed) as they beat the conference leaders, Oneonta St 71-59.

RMC in-region wins include the ODAC wins plus Messiah (195.0 miles), Piedmont,  Methodist and CNU. Frostburg (Great Lakes Region, Admin Region #1 and 232 miles away) does not meet criteria.  RMC is currently 10-1/12-4.

As CNU enters conference play, they begin to add to the win column, and in turn, to improve their in-region percentage!

CNU's having an in-region W/L of 16-3 (regular season) is possible.

Ralph, you've done a fantastic job with this.  Hopefully as soon as the rankings come out, we get some great discussion on this.

It's great to see Trinity back at #1 in the South.  It's been a few years since they were last up there.  This weekend is a big regional weekend for Trinity as they visit #9 DePauw and #5 Centre.

Thanks.

As it is looking, Trinity is in line to host first and second round games.

The rest of the South is chasing Trinity, especially the Pool A bid (and possible Pool C bid) from the ASC.

We might get 3-team bracket in this part of the country, if the ASC (other than Mississippi College gets a Pool C), i.e., Away/Home/Bye.

Looking at the Pool C "table" that is posted by pabegg, if everyone wins out, and UTD meets McMurry in the
ASC Finals,  we might get a McMurry-UTD matchup on Thursday and the winner going to Trinity on Saturday.

As this is rolling out, I think that Centre needs to beat Trinity this week to stabilize their chances of a Pool C bid, if they don't win the SCAC tourney.

As pabegg has outlined, the first 10-13 Pool C bids go to strong teams that are runners-up in good conferences.

That leaves about 5-8 Pool C bids for strong teams that get upset by Cinderellas in their conference tourney.

Not unless all the majority of teams are within driving distance of ol' TU.  The NCAA places more importance on cost reduction than giving the top seed home games.

Trinity can be the #1 seed in the entire tourney and only get a bye and a second round game out of the whole deal!  >:(

I think that there will be one pod down here.  Mississippi College is > 500 miles from Wash St Louis and Maryville MO, but is less than 500 miles to Oglethorpe and UTDallas.

As pabegg noted, Trinity UT-Dallas and McMurry can all connect by bus.

I anticipate 2 Pool A bids and maybe a Pool C bid.  There may be a Pool B bid at Chapman to go with the SCIAC Pool A Bid.  The NWC Pool A bid is also a travel orphan.

I should amend what I said earlier.  If the NCAA has to fly everyone (or the same number of teams) regardless of the host site location, the higher seed will indeed host.  That rarely happens here in the South Region, however, thanks to the 'pod' effect Ralph mentions.

TU is no risk to be the #1 overall seed in BB, but its men's soccer team has travelled as #1 overall seed thanks to this policy at least a couple of times over the years.

Walter, McMurry dropped from "C4" to "C19"  and from #19 to #45 overall with two losses to UMHB, no slouch of a team.

As I look at the Pool C bids, I think that Trinity can go 3-1 in the regular season and 2-1 in the tourney and still sneak into Pool C.  TU is currently #15 (down from #14 two weeks ago) in the rankings.

Do you want to speculate on Centre as well, Ralph?  DePauw is probably Centre's potential biggest obstacle to making the post season in a Pool C classification.  One of these teams will be left behind I would image.  If Centre wins out the remainder of the regular season, and gets to the final of the SCAC tournament, what do you think?

I think that Centre earns a Pool C bid, if they win the last 3 regular season games, and then lose in the tourney finals.

No way the 3rd place team in the SCAC (a quarterfinal loser) is in the tourney. Maryville College wins its last 16 STRAIGHT with a youth movement after playing nine of first 11 on the road. Scots are a perennial tourney invite and this year should be no different. 16 straight wins to end the season should get you in.

Welcome to the boards.

The FAQ on the front page gives the mechanism by which Maryville can earn a Pool b bid.

Averett's win over CNU helps Maryville TN. That might be the little extra that the committee needs in the criteria.

16 straight wins is not one of the criteria that the Handbook designates.

I always encourage fans to look at the Handbook.

Thanks for the post Ralph. Sad to see that 16 straight wins is not a criteria for being in. Maryville's win over Averett is reflective of the youth movement this Scots team had. In the past Maryville has been upperclassmen heavy and were early season road warriors. Once our freshman got acclimated this was a good team-NCAA worthy. I appreciate your post and will check out the criteria.

I emailed a big time, well-known, greatly admired, Scots fan that Averett's winning, combined with all of the losses in the South Region, makes for some interesting changes.

I think that Maryville might even sneak into the 8th slot of the regional rankings.

I need pabegg to do his most recent run.  (The GSAC competition does not help the Strength of Schedule numbers.)

Guilford, Randy Mac, Depauw and Roanoke, all of you should be staying home. Losing in your conference quarters illustrates your level TODAY in comparison to tournament ready teams. Those guys aren't playing in the Big East. Those teams needed to win one game to get in and they could not. Those four teams got what they deserved-a SEASON ENDING LOSS. Hard to believe we are saying sneak in when Maryville has won SIXTEEN straight.

The difference between D1 and D3 is that the last ten games is not used as a primary criteria in D3.

A game in November counts the same as a game in February.

Post by: Big Dog on February 28, 2009, 08:38:44 pm
Ralph, I coached in both the D-3 and D-1 tournaments, and I can tell you that teams that win sixteen straight are more prepared for the post season than a team that can't win in a conference quarterfinal. I mentioned the Big East only as a reference point in that the SCAC and ODAC aren't power conferences. Maryville has gone ON THE ROAD in the NCAA TOURNEY and beaten conference champions from both these leagues under the Lambert watch. A loss in November may count the same as a loss in February, but not to anyone who has ever had a young team that got better and better and won their last sixteen straight with freshman and sophomores. Guilford, Randy Mac, Depauw, Roanoke, had the easiest road into the tourney. They did not take care of business and no way should their season's be extended when they can't win a conference quarterfinal game. I may be a loss, but it says a great deal about a teams readiness and sense of urgency when they can't win a first round confreence tourney game. I'm sorry-those guys need to call Panama City and get a condo. Spring break for them started with a first round conference tourney loss.

Big Dog,

You may or may not be right in the abstract, but you are definitely wrong by d3 selection criteria.  Despite the potential for abuse, I'd like to see somewhat more 'subjectivity' in the selections, but the criteria are fairly specific.  When you win, by how much you win - these are irrelevant.

IMO DePauw and Roanoke are toast, Randy Mac is bubble, but Guilford is fairly safe for a C.  Though the way presumed AQs are falling, even the Quakers may get bumped by higher-rated upset victims.
Title: Re: South Region Rankings and Playoffs
Post by: Big Dog on February 28, 2009, 08:57:40 pm
Mr. Ypsi,

I agree. Depauw and Roanoke will be building sand castles. Mcmurray loses their slot by falling to Miss College. Randy Mac I agree is bubbling-while Guilford-if they are the best ODAC after the AQ, should get in. The criteria is fairly specific, but when coaches are involved subjectivity, at some point, and basketball knowledge, will come into play. To act like Southwestern might get in with a 7-8 conference record is absurd. If Southwestern wins the AQ, Trinity should join the Ballers Gone Wild Spring Break for non-NCAA tourney teams. Nice post.

Trinity is a great school-fine university. One of the nation's best. The Scots belonged in the dance just as much as Trinity. If you noticed my post, it said "If Southwestern wins the AQ," and of course they did not as they lost to the Centre. No way three SCAC teams deserved to dance-just infeasible as we both know Centre and Trinity are the best of that league-and they both are in. Maryville College has played Trinity before in the NCAA tourney, and traveling for the Scots is no big deal. Far better to be in San Antonio this time of year than in any other place MC could have landed. Look forward to being in San Antonio to see the Tigers for the first time since the Charlie Brock days. Thanks for your post.

From the Handbook

Selection Criteria.

Primary Criteria

The primary criteria emphasize regional competition (all contests leading up to NCAA
championships); all criteria listed will be evaluated (not listed in priority order).
• Win-loss percentage against regional opponents.
• Strength-of-schedule (only contests versus regional competition).
- Opponents’ Average Winning Percentage (OWP).
- Opponents’ Opponents’ Average Winning Percentage (OOWP).
[See Appendix B for explanation of OWP and OOWP calculations.]
• In-region head-to-head competition.
• In-region results versus common regional opponents.
• In-region results versus regionally ranked teams.
Note:
• Ranked opponents are defined as those teams ranked at any time of the rankings/
selection process.  [Note Once ranked, always "ranked".]
• Conference postseason contests are included.
• Contests versus provisional and reclassifying members in their third and fourth
years shall count in the primary criteria. Provisional and reclassifying members
shall remain ineligible for rankings and selections.

Weighted Scale. For a minimum of two championship seasons (2009-10 and 2010-
11), a weighted scale will apply. Once the OWP and OOWP are calculated, they are
to be combined on a weighted scalre (e.g., 2/3 weight for OWP and 1/3 weight for
OOWP) and this combined number becomes the strength of schedule.

Home/Away Multiplier. A multiplier of 1.4 shall be added to the OWP for those
games played away from home. In addition, the same multiplier (1.4) shall be included
for those games played on the road for the OOWP. A multiplier of 1/0 (no positive
or negative effect) will be included in the OWP and OOWP for all neutral games. A
multiplier of 0.6 shall be included in the OWP and OOWP for all home games.

If we (the South) are to get 2 Pool C bids, it looks like that CTX must win the tourney to get in.

Emory is looking strong for a Pool C.  They have 4 games remaining, including one with Rochester.

Seems like there would likely be 3 Pool C bids from the South, if CTX wins their tourney .... VWC/HSC, Emory, and MH-B.  ??

In the ASC, East #1 UT-Dallas hosts the tourney.

Also CTX is the travel partner for UMHB and a strong division rival.

I always greatly honor and respect any team that can beats its rival (like ASC West #1 UMHB beating ASC-West #2 CTX) all three times, or rarely all four times, in a season!

I think that Emory can "lock" its Pool C bid by beating Rochester.  They will not get another loss after the regular season, and they have plenty of results versus in-region foes, and other South Region teams in the Regional Rankings are likely to take a minor hit with a conference tourney loss.
Title: Re: South Region Rankings and Playoffs
Post by: Ralph Turner on February 23, 2013, 10:21:33 pm
VWC is a lock and can get the #1 seed in the region.

UMHB can move to the #2 seed with a win over RR CTX in the ASC Final.  I think that they are vulnerable for Pool
C if they lose.

CNU is a lock.

HSC moves to Pool C.
Emory is probably next on the table..
CTX probably has to win the ASC tourney to get into the tourney.
Coloardo College plays Trinity TX for the SCAC bid.  The bean counters are hoping for a UMHB-TrinityTX first round game.

Yes, they are South Region.  I usually "lump" them into the Midwest with the rest of the SLIAC.
Denny, they might play Centre, if the Colonels get the Pool B bid.

That would be a good match-up for D3 fans in Kentucky!

I see Pat has projected UMHB to host the first weekend pod again ... why not CTX, with a similar record and the H2H in the conference championship?  The SOS difference isn't THAT great, and besides, CTX is much closer to my house  ;)

I think that UMHB gets the bye in the first week, and TU goes to CTX.  UMHB hosts in the second week.

UMHB beat CTX 2-1 in the season and has had a higher Regional Ranking all season.

13 days off!  Wow!  That might be tough.  I think that I would rather be CTX!

Is UMHB on Spring Break that weekend?

When did we change to not having first and second round games in the initial weekend?  That was certainly the case last year.

CTX goes to Trinity, winner goes to MHB the next week.  All I can think is that CTX didn't file paperwork to host.

This year alone for the men. The D2 and D3 finals will be played in Atlanta during the Final Four.

FYI in case you missed it... Concordia did NOT put in to host... thus why they are traveling to Trinity and on to UMHB if they win. Only 37 schools put in to host potentially 30 games.

I am not sure... their coach said on Hoopsville yesterday they chose not to do it because it could be a distraction on getting the job of winning games done... not sure that is a real answer or just what they are saying... they could have missed the deadline since they didn't think they would be in this boat to begin with... which has happened before.

The curious thing is that only 37 schools put in to host when so many schools could host this time around.

Ralph - Just wondering. Do you think Spalding ever received votes in the South Regional Rankings? I know SOS because of the conference they play in. But still. Their in-region record has to count for something.

I don't think so.  The SOS was weak, and the RRO was 0-2 (Results were losses to Transy and to Thomas More.)

Try to get games with Centre.

   South
1   Randolph-Macon   23-2   23-2
2   Centre   19-4   21-4
3   Emory   19-5   19-5  Hosts Rochester on 02/23 for the UAA Pool A bid. NO tourney in the UAA
4   Washington & Lee   18-7   18-7
5   Guilford   18-7   18-7
6   Lynchburg   20-5   20-5
7   Roanoke   18-7   18-7

8   Mary Hardin-Baylor   20-5   20-5

My prediction is that Randy Mac and the survivor of that ODAC logjam at #4-#7 make the tourney.

If Centre wins the SAA, then the ASC, SAA, SCAC, and USAC appear to be one bid conferences.

With 20 bids to give over 8 regions, I want to see if the South is held to only 1 Pool C bid.

UT-Dallas (24-4/23-4 with a win over Whitworth at Trinity TX, neutral floor, 1-0 vRRO)  is in for the ASC. HSU knocked off UMHB last night, so the ASC is probably a 1- bid league.

Emory is in for the UAA Pool A bid. (No bubble bustin' there.)

Centre lost to edged Oglethorpe 75-72 and play Sewanee today. On to Pool C for the Colonels.

SCAC final tomorrow.  TLU vs #6 seed UDallas (6-10/ 11-16). Remember when UDallas was the Pool B bid with a 13-12 record in 2004?
