Capital is rebranding and they need a new nickname.  Do your thing.  Wrong answers only, please.

They won't be the only ones. We are working hard on the Lee part of W&L...

I think it's best that I sit out these conversations.  My 1st tag line indicates my position on most things these days....

Could be. I just know W&L can't recruit students or faculty of color right now. It's not happening. Something like 2% of the student body is black despite offering massive scholarships and those students mostly come from outside the U.S. There is a practical reason, and has been for quite a while, to change that association. But big and older donors don't like change, so it's a slow process. We had the same problem in '84 when the coed vote finally came down, but the University was better for it after. Not all change, even if driven by means we may not approve of, is a bad thing.

I have always been curious how much money it would cost to change the name of a university. Not saying that should be a reason to not do it, but it seems like these are usually all or nothing situations where you are going to need to change everything that has W&L on it in a fairly short amount of time.

I suppose you could do a case study using Rhodes and McDaniel (officially William McDaniel). They have both changed their names within relatively recent memory

Maybe they figure they can save enough on travel costs to offset the additional expenses of however many scholarships they offer, not to mention less time lost from classes. They are a lot closer to D2 schools in TN, NC and WV than to most of the ODAC schools, and the D2 results shouldn't be too much worse than what they've been getting in recent years at the D3 level, maybe even a little better if they can lure in some athletes with scholarship money.

In other news, the NFL declares open for business. Full stadiums, full steam ahead. Yeah, this is accurate, I’m sure.

https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/redskins/nfls-troy-vincent-were-planning-have-full-stadiums-until-medical-community-tells-us

The headline is more inflammatory than the quote:

“We also know that we have to plan for half stadiums. Three-quarters. So we're planning for all of these different scenarios. But first and foremost, we're making every effort, working with the medical community, if we can have those stadiums with all people until they tell us otherwise when that time comes, that's our plan. That's our plan of action."

Yeah, we'll see how that all plays out. I renewed my tickets a while ago because I didn't want to risk losing them, but the last I heard things were still up in the air. My wife say that if they do play I'm welcome to go and sit around with 70K other people, I just can't come home after.

Well, hell, then. No wonder Redlands ( finally ) beat LINFIELD! They had a pro playing on their side!

HSCTiger74... good to see you're around.

Thanks D O.C. You guys always keep this board interesting so I like to check in now and then to see what's up.

No way Jose! That's some great 70s bubblegum pop right there.  ;D
My vote is for "In the Year 2525" by Zager and Evans. My hand can't reach for the off button fast enough when it comes on the radio.

Folks, after nearly 10 years on this forum, this is my last post.

Who?
The Rev is dead, long live the Rev.

Not dead, just defrocked.
Maybe at some point he will see his way clear to come back.

No MLB games really sucks, no Masters sucks, but I did discover last night that Amazon Prime has the entire Andy Griffith Show available for binging. :D

Here's some relief.  Highlights of the season opening game between Richmond and Carlton.  It lacks all atmosphere playing in the MCG with no audience but it's something.  There is a growing push to have a lottery for one fan from each team entry.  Give them a 'Boo' and a 'Cheer' button along with a microphone to abuse the umpires.  That way even though the stadium is empty it still has the sound and atmosphere.  Maybe next weekend.

And MUC57, watch after yourself, whether it be regular flu or COVID-19.  Keep checking back here because I'll be posting highlights of all the AFL games.  And who's going to complain?   There's absolutely no live sport hardly anywhere in the world.

Great highlights Oz, thanks for posting. The empty stadium was pretty strange but it seemed really odd to hear what the umpires were saying to the players as play went along; crowd noise and the announcers usually block that out. Out of curiosity, is the Silvagni mentioned in the commentary any relation to Steven Silvagni who played for the Blues years ago?

Well, things may change but it looks like the AFL will continue on this year.  The opening round is this weekend and boy I hope we get to play Brisbane.

The league has taken some extraordinary measures to make it all work.  Players have essentially entered camp.  They are dorming together as well as with support staff.  Socially isolating the team.  Refs.  Administrators. The season has been shorted by over 20%.  Everyone has jumped on board trying to keep the virus out of the playing system.  And they will play to empty stadiums.  Players are taking 20% pay cuts and clubs are cutting football department budgets to finance it all.  Stadiums will be empty but broadcasts will go ahead.

I'm sure it will stop as soon as the first players turns up positive but until then they are living in a bubble to keep it going forward.  I hope it works.

Assuming they can play them all, are you looking at 16 or 17 matches? And how do they determine which home and home gets chopped to one?

We're doing a family trip to FL the last week of March, which we don't intend to cancel for all of the reasons that have been mentioned.

We're going to FL the first week of April, and we are going, even if I have to drive it.

Our normal Costco run this weekend found the store fully stocked on everything but toilet paper, which was completely gone...funny what people choose to stock up on.

I've been unable to find hand sanitizer anywhere.  I have big bottles on my desk at work and at home, but I'd like smaller bottles for our vehicles (this is not panic mode from me-->just don't want a cold/flu/corona prior to our spring break trip).

The Minneapolis Archdiocese put out the following guidance:
Quote
Meanwhile, if pastors judge it good for the well-being of their parishioners—psychologically if not also medically—they certainly can issue parish-wide guidelines for their community. Here are some precautions they may consider:
+Remind parishioners to stay home if they feel sick or have flu-like symptoms.
+Suspend the Sign of Peace or offer it without touching.
+Suspend Communion from the Chalice.
+Discourage hand-holding during the Our Father.
+Empty holy water fonts.
Any changes should be communicated with parish leadership, staff and parishioners. Parishioners are reminded to stay home if they feel unwell or have flu-like symptoms.

Our priest brought it up yesterday, and it was funny how automatic it is to extend your hand for the peace offering, even when advised not to.  ;D
u

We got the same spiel from the Milwaukee Diocese

Drank communion from the common cup on Sunday. I got first drink, so minimal risk. Afterwards, my buddy says "That's faith! Hope you took an extra big swig for the rest of us"  8-) ;D

The rector at our Episcopal church actually told us that sipping from the common cup might be safer than intinction because of the possibility of dipping our fingers along with the host. I guess I see the point, but it still sounds wrong.

My deepest sympathy to all you Johnnies on the loss of some of your favorite watering holes. It must have felt like part of you died.

But do the pubs really cease to exist? Don't they live forever in our hearts? Can we not still smell the beer we spilled on our shirts?  Can't we still hea the voices of the coeds, or whoever , resonating in the stillness of the night? Don't you recall the next morning when school didn't seem to really matter? Yes, Virginia, there really were places of happiness, forgetfulness and, oh yes, regret!
And they live on today, in a different place, with a different name.l
As long as all of us are still here, THEY will be here.
I close by saying, simply, "Noroc". That's the way it's said in Romanian. You may say "Skoal", "Salud", "Prost", many other ways or, just simply, "Cheers.".
Her's to all of us. ❗️🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺........................! 😎 🤕 😴 😵  ;D
As long as a brewery doesn't burn down.   :) :D ;D
That would be when someone with better computer skills than me would cue the John Belushi clip from Animal House.

Thanks Oz, that's the one.  :)
