Trinity beats TLU in game 1 of the SCAC championship 9 - 3 to force final winner take all game 2. TLU still has the edge in pitching depth but Trinity got 8 innings out of starter Arjun Thakar which should even up the pitching match up a bit.

I would think that both TLU and Trinity should qualify for a regional spot based on previous rankings.

Got to hand it to Schreiner this year, a very small school beating nationally ranked TLU and almost beating nationally ranked Trinity last week. Congrats to them.

If both Trinity and TLU make it to the SCAC championship game they both should make a regional, which is good to see.
If Chapman wins SCIAC it might be tough to see two SCIAC teams in regionals.
NW conf ....smh

I had lots of friends at the game but could not make it this year. I watched some of it on the video feed and love their new three camera webcast, quality announcers. Top shelf. Cortland is a young team but look very talented and I would expect them to be in the mix later in the season. Trinity has the talent to make another run this year with better pitching and a more seasoned team. Not as much depth as previous teams so as long as injuries don't happen they should again be a favorite coming out of the West. Pretty special seeing TLU, and Trinity ranked in top 10.

Happy New Year to DIII baseball fans.

Wow, what  a start for Trinity this year. First series Cortland 3, then BSC 3, mid-week MHB, then Endicott 3, Babson 3, Rochester 3, then midweek Millikin. So much for Regional rankings; it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out at the end of the baseball year.

....and were not anywhere in the top 25 at the end of the season. .

They are now! Congrats to the players, coaches and families. Well done.
Nice to have the championship trophy back in Texas.

I have been so busy at work I have not been able to post but picked up the last half of the WR championship game.

I am so happy for TLU program to represent the West (maybe two teams if UTT can win tomorrow!) They have been playing this year for their team mate who was killed in a tragic accident and I am very excited for the Bulldog players and their families. Bring back the bronze and walnut to the West and SCAC boys. I will be a Bulldog fan for a few weeks.

Since explanations are the order of the day, who can explain how a conference runner up who didn't finish in the top 25 gets seeded higher than two conference winners and one of which was ranked 6th? Is SOS that big of a decider?

I do find it kinda funny that TLU and Concordia get to travel over 2000 miles to play each other when they're only 50 miles way from each other.

Yes, SOS really is that big of a factor.  TLU's SOS is 119, while CTX is 31, thats a pretty significant difference.  When it comes down to it, I think everyone is seeded right where they should be.  Take the Top 25 rankings out of the equation, they mean nothing.

This would have been a great year for the West to be played in TX as you could have put 4 TX teams there, the NWC and 1 SCIAC and fly the other SCIAC somewhere else.
I am glad that they are flying a Texas team to another region.  I will be very upset if UTT goes 2 and BBQ (again).

Since 2010, here is UTT's record in the West Regionals

2010 1-2 (eliminated by Mississippi College, which was still a member of the ASC)
2011  0-2
2013  2-2
2015  0-2
2016  2-2
2017  0-2 *0-3  Forgetting to tarp the field on Saturday night should count as a big L
2017  0-2 *0-4  Wearing the Astro's 60 jerseys and expect to be taken seriously...

I asked someone who was a bit closer to the team and said Flores got Mono and was not available. I did not follow the team that close but it looked like they stopped scoring runs. I am always leery of a team that starts out hot early, I actually prefer if there are struggles during the season as it builds character and toughness in a team; which prepares players for a tough playoff run. This team just seemed to fold under the pressure at the end. All speculation on my part as I never actually saw a game other than a few video webcasts.

TLU wins their first SCAC championship!
I did not realize it was their first. They will represent the SCAC well in the Regional.

Trinity laid the biggest egg in end of season play in recent memory losing 5 of their last 6 games and going 2 BBQ in their conference tournament....very un-Trinity like. They certainly will not be in Spokane next month regardless what they have posted on their website. Very disappointing end to what started out unexpectedly strong season start. Just shows how important it is to improve during the season and to be playing well at the end. TLU or Centenary will represent SCAC in the tournament and both are playing good baseball right now.

Most teams go through a funk, however Trinity's timing is not great heading into a conference tournament with 2 other very competitive teams. They better win the conference if they want to be in the West Regional. Scannell is as good as any coach getting a  team ready, but I am not sure if they will have one of the their top pitchers back for the tournament or not. By the nature of the program they tend to have more depth than the other SCAC teams so they can, and have , come through a loser bracket, as they will face one of the top pitchers in the SCAC this afternoon. Going to be a very competitive conf. tournament.
