If H-SC plays to their potential they should win. As for Bridgewater, they have played 4 teams that have 5 wins between them, mostly over each other. I don't think we have any idea if they are any good or not. Personally I think their schedule was so weak that playing H-SC is going to be the equivalent of getting punched in the mouth after a month of pillow fights. It could be very shocking. H-SC has to be angry after the last two weeks. I think they came in to the ODAC schedule feeling like, even with the loss to Huntingdon, this was going to be an easy year. I don't think that will happen again.

Records and strength of schedule can be thrown out in this one. Bridgewater dominated the Sydney series 2000 - 2005, just as Sydney has dominated it in the last 5 years. I just see this as a little crack in the Sydney armor. Mighty BC couldn't sustain it forever as I doubt Sydney will either. On paper Sydney wins, but we know what that means. It's Homecoming at BC and Hampden-Sydney week, every past Bridgewater football player knows what that means. The worm may be turnin' in the ODAC, come Saturday afternoon we will see if Bridgewater is for real or just playing inspired ball against inferior teams.

Allow me to be the ... fifth, I think ... to welcome Matt back to the boards! The ODAC has missed you.

My wallet has missed him and Mr. Cummings on poker nights at Stone Station!  :D :D :D

ps. talk about digging into the archives :o

Why here is the legend himself, far cry from playing poker at the Stone Station tent hours before a night game at Shentel Stadium. LOL!

Great points Abnrgr.  Hampden Sydney has played two option teams this year with varying results.  Sewanee is a weak team that HSC shut out.  Salisbury runs an option that is pretty strong.  They have large O-lineman and fast hard running backs.  The QB is a threat to score at any point on the field.  HSC gave up over 500 yards of offense but stopped them two times in the redzone without points in the 4th quarter in the close win.  Option teams present different problems that teams have to address.  A championship team must be able to win games where they don't play well and games where they don't matchup well.  W&L will present a huge problem if they are allowed to do what they want to do.  The key with stopping any good team is to take away what they do well or what they want to do.  Whichever team can impose their will onto the other has a advantage.  In the ODAC this year on any given Saturday anyone can win.  You better not overlook anyone.

It doesn't hurt to have your offense score a couple of early TDs and let that option team play from behind.

A change in the schedule allowed BC to practice 2 weeks prior to Ferrum's option attack so they will be working on a refresher this week for W&L. If I remember right W&L runs more of a "smoke & mirror" pistol attack. If you get penetration they are done. Well then again isn't that usually the case!  :o ;D

We got beat 42-28.....Hats off to W&L-they flat-out whipped our a$$.They're in the drivers seat: if they win out-they win the ODAC......Nobody has stopped that Option attack-we sure didn't even come close.......The only way we make playoffs now is to win out and hope Bridgewater,Catholic, or H-SC knocks off the Gennies.....and even then we need help....we have SURELY screwed ourselves today.....Good job W&L!

Should be interesting next week. Bridgewater has the best run defense in the ODAC. Will it hold up against the speed option? It did against Ferrum so I guess BC should have a shot?  ;)

Is SVU better than they've been in the past or did BC have a letdown?

that would be junior high mistakes per Coach Clark.  ;)  Up 21-7 and fumbled at own 15. Held to FG. Missed FG seconds before halftime and fumbled on 2 yrd line going in to score in 3rd quarter. Won by 9, should have been over by halftime. They had 1 receiver with speed but not a sole who would make a tackle. Athletic looking bunch though. :)

llama, am i to assume the there will be communion on saturday at some point before the game.  if so i will pick up a bottle, any color i mean flavor requests.  how about the game.  what chance does bridgewater have?  i watched the h-s game with catholic and they gave up plenty of yards to the pass.  at the least i will get to scout 2 possible playoff opponents for wesley.  only 3 more days.

My thoughts are HSC is the favorite but given a few turnovers, anything can happen at BC on Homecoming weekend.  ;)

I would hope you would get an ODAC representative in week 2 of the playoffs if the ODAC gets through week 1. An opening round meeting with the USAC looks like a lock if you guys secure the No. 1 seed, barring the USAC rep getting shipped out.  :o

Any flavor will do.

Cheers! I more day of real work then into tailgate mode.  ;D ;D ;D

i know i am getting ahead of this week, but i can not wait until next weekends homecoming game between bridgewater and hampden sydney.  making the trip to hang out with my stagg bowl family, stone station.  looking forward to some great grubb, pulled pork i hope from skoaltrain, chicken, and fried turkey, etc.  party on, i will bring some good micro brew beer to add to the festivities, see you in a week.

You will be welcomed with open arms!

We laughed yesterday as Skoaltrain & myself opened the Salem parkinglot at 2:30pm for our 7:30pm game. There was no 20 inches of snow, no Mt. Union or UWW rowdies, actually it was just us. Then about 30 minutes later a local pulled up and asked if there was going to be a party tonight. Our reply, "there already is one, Stone Station is in the house!" Two hours later after his buddie got off work they showed up with fire water and cigars. Gotta love the local Salem crowd.
Later, as we walked out after the game I mentioned how I couldn't wait to get back there in a few short months. Good Times.

We will be arriving at the usual location @ 4pm on Friday. Looking forward to a great tailgating weekend. Not so sure about the game but that is why it is not played on paper, "any given Saturday" you know!

WOW!!! I don't care who we play. this is big fun. Reminds me of BC football in 2000. The door mat rises up and gets it done. It must be the year for under dog karma.  Saints, EMU BB and Broadway BB. Whoda thunk it?

Llama,
you are correct Hasanova is a great host.  I haven't seen him yet this evening but he was dead on with the tip about Stameys BBQ.

KUDOs to the ODAC and go gobblers!
Was getting updates from afar but glad to hear the good news! Broadway has a shot so we will see what happens tomorrow evening. Guilford vs. EMU rematch, should be great fun. Enjoy it! I'll have an EMU alum named Guengerich with me in Richmond so I'm sure I'll be getting regular updates on the game.  ;)

Hasasnova,
Thanks for the warm welcome.

I wonder if you could offer some tips regarding parking. From the campus map it didn't appear that there was much parking around RB field house. In previous visits for Ftbl I ususally ended up near the baseball field. I did see large lots out along New Garden rd. but it looked like a pretty good hike from there.

About time you resurface xbcdad!  ;D You won't find a better host than Hasanova & Guilford college! Heck they even closed an entire "front-row" parkinglot for Stone Station and BC tailgaters in previous years in Greensboro! All we had to offer was a little grub.  ;)

I will be listening from afar but hope to hear about the EMU rematch come Saturday evening. JMU women vs. UNCW tonight at 5pm & of course will be in Richmond to watch Broadway play for their first state basketball title in the modern era on Saturday night. Enjoy the game and root for those Broadway boys on the EMU roster.  Take care Hasanova, after next weekend its time to start thinking football again! :o

I wouldn't sweat the ranking too much. Fact is, EMU wins out, wins a couple of games in the ODAC Tourney and they will be sitting pretty in the NCAA Tourney.

Yes, that's true.  If the Royals win out and just get to the ODAC Championship game, then I think that they will likely have an opportunity to host two NCAA games in Harrisonburg.

I'm basing this on NCAA Rankings, which are the starting point for making decisions about tournament pairings and the makeup of the bracket (along with the all-important issue of geography).  This is the Regional Ranking from last Wednesday, before EMU's BIG victory over Guilford ....

South Region In-Region Record Overall Record
1. Guilford                 19-1                 19-1
2. Virginia Wesleyan 16-2                  18-2
3. Texas-Dallas          16-3                 17-4
4. Eastern Mennonite 12-2                16-3
5. Austin                     16-5                16-5
6. Mary Hardin-Baylor 15-5                15-6
7. Randolph-Macon     10-4                16-4
8. Maryville (Tenn.)     12-3                17-4

Based on games through Sunday, February 14, the next ranking (tomorrow) may look something like this ....

South Region In-Region Record Overall Record
1. Guilford                  20-2                 20-2
2. Eastern Mennonite 14-2                18-3
3. Texas-Dallas           17-3                 18-4
4. Virginia Wesleyan   18-3                  20-3
5. Austin                     18-5                18-5
6. Mary Hardin-Baylor 17-5                17-6
7. Randolph-Macon     13-4                19-4
8. Maryville (Tenn.)     14-3                19-4

EMU jumps to the #1 spot in region. You are right on, keep winning and Yoder Arena will host several NCAA Tournament games.  ;)

If they have everyone come back in 2010-2011 they will be ranked in the Top 10 preseason as all those pollsters will have forgotten BC & HSC in 2010.  ;)

Sad to here about Austin Twine, I saw him coming back in from the hospital on crutches after the game and hoped it would only be a couple of game injury. It will affect the team for sure but more minutes for the best "6th man" in D-3, Eli Crawford, won't be devastating. Hoping for a miraculus recovery for Twine's sake.

I have to agree that EMU has been working on a back-up game plan for the off shooting night. In the 1st half they lost a 9 pt lead midway through as they went "o-fer" from 3. In the 2nd half they hit a few 3's got a double digit working margin, then Kirby went to a high post spread and either ran backdoor plays or posted up Eli Crawford and sealed the game with 10 minutes to go. EMU was clearly the better team on a night where 3's weren't falling, their point guard went down in the first 4 minutes of the game, and Phillips + their starting center were limilted due to foul trouble. EMU is deep and getting deeper as these freshman practice daily with the Juniors/ Senior on this team. They have a chance to go far if they learn to play wisely.

ps. I believe there were 76 fouls called in the game tonight. If it is remotely the same crew, it could be a foul fest again Wednesday night in Park View.  ;)

exodacer,

You said, "I dont think EMU has anyone who could be POY. Fields, Sanborn, Hinson, and Trawick are my top 4 but I dont think the Eagles will finish in the top 4 of the league." So are you saying it is just a two man race between Sanborn and Fields?

I read the article in the Daily News Record too this morning. I understand that BC has won 4 straight over EMU but, I don't see anything wrong with Johnson being confident about the return game at EMU in February. What do you expect him to say, well I think we'll have another poor shooting night and I'm afraid we'll be on the losing end. Plus, you don't really know how the reporter framed the question to Johnson during the interview.

Anyways, even though EMU lost at BC on Saturday the positives I see about the rematch for the Royals are it took a career night by Trawick (36 points) and about 10 points above his average from Jake Johnson (21 points) to win by 6. Plus I don't see the Runnin' Royals shooting that poorly from the 3 point line the rest of the season. In addition, it shows the depth EMU has this season on the offensive end that your First Team All ODAC player from a year ago as sophomore had an off shooting night and only lose by 6 on the road. As an EMU fan and looking at our  basketball history, it is nice to see our guys have confidence. Go EMU!

Lost by 6, but were down 14 with under 2 minutes to go. The game wasn't that close in the last 5 minutes. The only reason it was in the balance was due to a ton of foul shots missed by BC (30-48 made) and a late 3 by Crawford. I do like EMU's chances in the rematch for sure. Kirby graduated from my Alma mater so I will be pulling for him down the stretch in the ODAC.  ;)
