Championship Selections

The Selection Criteria are found on page 22.

Section 24 Selection Criteria

The primary criteria emphasize regional competition (all contests leading up to NCAA championships); all criteria listed will
be evaluated (not listed in priority order).

● Win-loss percentage against Division III opponents.
● Division III head-to-head competition.
● Results versus common Division III opponents.
● Results versus ranked Division III opponents as established by the rankings at the time of selection.
● Division III strength of schedule.
● Win-loss percentage last 25% of the season (if applicable).

Contests versus provisional and reclassifying members in their third and fourth years shall count in the primary criteria.
Provisional and reclassifying members shall remain ineligible for rankings and selection.
Weighted Scale. Once the OWP and OOWP are calculated, they are to be combined on a weighted scale (e.g., 2/3 weight
for OWP and 1/3 weight for OOWP) and this combined number becomes the strength of schedule.

If the evaluation of the primary criteria does not result in a decision, the secondary criteria will be reviewed. All the criteria
listed will be evaluated (not listed in priority order). The secondary criteria introduce results against out-of-region Division
III and all other opponents, including those contests versus opponents from other classifications (i.e., provisionals, NAIA,
NCAA Divisions I and II).

● Non-Division III win-loss percentage.
● Results versus common non-Division III opponents.
● Non-Division III strength of schedule.

Let's start the National Tournament board.

There is a great Hoopsville show going now.  For Newbies, the Mock Selection by D-Mack, Titan Q and Hoops Fan is very instructive the nature of the selection process.

My first thought on the bracketing.

Schreiner (SCAC Pool A bid) is within 500 miles of both ETBU (if ETBU gets a Pool C) and Sul Ross State.

If they put in a bid to host, then only one team would need to be flown to that bracket, unless LeTourneau gets off the table (almost last) and have a complete Texas bracket.

I am assuming 2 flights to Washington state in another bracket.

According the Hoopsville, Hobart came off the table for bid #21.  So Sul Ross State, probably the #2 ranked team in the South, gets flown somewhere!

Historical/statistical archive / Triple Plays
« on: May 12, 2014, 09:50:11 pm »
There were 6 triple plays in D-3 this season.

One poster on another board wondered if one player has ever hit for the infamous "Cycle", i.e., a triple play, a double play, a single out. One might add a strikeout to make it a "quadricycle".  Two players hit for the "tri-cycle".  I don't know what other name we can give it, but please make suggestions.

In the first game of the DH with North Central IL on March 21, 2014, St Norbert 3B Derek Klegin hit into the triple play plus 2 K's and a single.

On April 2, 2014, Plymouth State catcher Dan Armstrong went 2 for 4 against Babson but hit into a triple play and a double play.  (He came close to the "cycle".)

Baldwin-Wallace 2B Mark Zimmerman went 2 for 5 scoring 2 runs and 5 RBI.  He hit into a double play in the first, 6-4-3. Zimmerman grounded to second in the 3rd.  He walked and scored in the 4th. He hit a 2-RBI single to right in the 5th.  He hit a 3-run homer in the 6th. The 5-4-3 triple play occurred in the 8th.  Final score Baldwin-Wallace 16, Wooster 12.

On April 27th, Piedmont dh Patrick Lyons went 0 for 3 with an RBI in the Piedmont 5-4 victory. He walked in the 2nd inning and was out on a SAC bunt. He struck out looking in the 4th. He was given an RBI on a 1-6-3 double play in the 6th. He hit into a 6-4-3 triple play in the 8th.

UW-Stout C Jared Francois went 0-3 against UW-Stevens Point on May 9th.  He flied to CF in the 2nd.  He had the 5-4-3 triple play in the 4th.  He was out 6-3 in the top of the 7th, in the 13-3 loss in the WIAC Tourney.

On May 9th, LeTourneau DH David Perkins went 1 for 4, including  home run, hitting into a 6-4-3 triple play, ground out to SS, and  struck out looking.;board=1563.0
