Week 8 Flyby Distractions
NCAA Regional Rankings, winning streaks, and regular season titles being clinched
were enough to distract our “eye-in-the-sky” from completing his routes.
What were the attention-grabbers? Have a look and see!

By Christan Shirk

It's that time of the season when things get very interesting. Conference races are heating up or are being decided with the conference tournaments just around the corner.  The NCAA breaks out their pre-tournament regional rankings which always provide a different (and sometimes controversial) perspective on the proceedings to date and frame the final days and weeks leading into the tournament.  The number of undefeated teams dwindles down and some teams find themselves peaking at just the right time while others take a late season stumble with little time to right the ship.  It's exciting, and it can be easy to get caught up in some stories while missing others.  Here are some of the attention-grabbing distractions that kept a thorough set of flybys to be completed this past week.

Fram! Fram! The battle cry of the ram-paging Luther Norse is heard far and wide!  The IIAC regular season title belongs to Luther who struck down the highly-ranked and IIAC favorites Loras midweek and completed the feat with an emphatic 5-0 victory over third-place Simpson on the weekend.  The Norse played . . . According to Appendix C, Section C.1 of the Division III Soccer Pre-Championship Manual, the strength-of-schedule (SOS) calculations will take account home/away this year by applying home and away multipliers.

Quote
Section C•1 MEN’S STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE MULTIPLIER
Beginning with the 2011 season, the calculation of strength of schedule for Division III men’s soccer will include a statistical
component giving more value to away games (i.e., games played on the road). A multiplier of 1.25 will be factored into the
opponents’ average winning percentage (OWP) and opponents’ opponents’ average winning percentage (OOWP) for away
games and a multiplier of 0.85 be factored into the OWP and OOWP for home games.

A SUNYAC Tale: The Times They are a Changing
The men's SUNYAC has something old and something new this season.
Here is our snapshot of the league.

By ManI Tafari

The SUNYAC season has been filled with excitement and surprises, and while nothing new in this action driven league, 2011 has brought a few changes to the traditional line-up of the top teams.

Da Bears
The conference has its usual line up of Regional powers who are almost guaranteed to make the six team playoff this season; Plattsburgh, Fredonia, Geneseo and Brockport.  Yet this year, new head coach Adam Parker has put his Potsdam Golden Bears in the thick of SUNYAC conversation by clinching a playoff spot with two matches to spare.  Unfortunately for Parker’s men, their regular season performance will negatively impact their ability to sneak up on adversaries come Tourney time.

“The Rankings that Matter”
The low-down on the NCAA Regional Rankings to be
released today: how they work, why they matter.

By Christan Shirk

Today the NCAA Division III men’s and women’s soccer committees will release their first of three weekly regional rankings leading up to “selection Sunday” and the release of the tournament brackets.  Those new to the D-III soccer scene (and maybe some not so new) might be confused about what these rankings are since we already have the NSCAA regional and national rankings and the D3soccer.com national Top 25.  Even though the NCAA includes them on their site, adding to the potential confusion, the NSCAA (note the “S”) rankings are not the NCAA rankings but rather rankings done by the National Soccer Coachers Association of America.  You may have heard long-time fans chide that “the NSCAA and D3soccer.com rankings don’t mean anything; it's the NCAA rankings that matter.”  And they are right in that the NSCAA and D3soocer.com rankings do not play any part in the process of selecting teams for the NCAA championship tournaments; the NCAA's own rankings do as will be explained below.

However, I think it’s unfair to say the NSCAA and D3soccer.com rankings don't mean anything.  They are . . . MORE

The Flybys are back for a conference edition.  We are in the heart of conference play and the races are starting to heat up.  We'll take a quick look at the results and developing payoff picture in many of the conferences across the country.

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC)
10/11: Penn St.-Behrend 2, Pitt-Bradford 0  |  Penn St.-Altoona 2, Franciscan 0
10/15: Medaille 5, Pitt-Greensburg 0  |  Pitt-Bradford 4, Franciscan 1  |  Penn St.-Behrend 2, Penn St.-Altoona 0
Snapshot: Penn St.-Behrend (7-6-1 / 5-1-0), who lost to leaders Medaille (13-2-1 / 6-0-0) early in conference play, is making a charge for the top with win over second place Pitt-Bradford (5-6-2 / 5-1-1).  Due to the head-to-head loss, it’s improbable that Behrend can overtake Medaille for the #1 seed even if they’d get help in the form of a Bradford home win over Medaille this Wednesday, but . . .
