Graczyk over Locastro for NY player of the year? Interesting call.

Graczyk: .408/.464/.516 1 HR, 1 3B, 15 2B, 31 RBI, 17 BB, 13 steals in 20 attempts
Locastro: .424/.539/.625 2 HR, 6 3B, 11 2B, 32 RBI, 15 BB, 36 steals in 37 attempts

Graczyk is a CF, Locastro is a SS, so both of them play premium defensive positions—though Locastro's 19 errors would seem like a lot for a SS, and Graczyk made just one (though it tells us nothing about his range)

But these offensive numbers aren't even close. 100 points in slugging? 23 additional steals AND a nearly perfect percentage? Yes, the caliber of competition may have been different, but by how much? The teams played three times, and shared several opponents.

The defense may have been a check in Graczyk's favor, but Locastro's advantage in hitting and baserunning make him the better pick IMO.

bombers,  according to the d3baseball.com blurb on the all-american teams, Locastro is credited with only 11 stolen bases (probably confused with doubles).  Locastro also was beaten out by a SS from Manchester with slightly lower numbers.  I hope the voting staff got the right stats!
Corrected. Thank you.

This year will likely not be warm. Excepting one day last week when it got to 100 in Minneapolis and 93 in Fargo, it's been a cool spring and continues to be.
Mother Nature is giving the field a good watering today.

The Linfield vs. Ithaca game in round one is an interesting one.  These appear to be two very good baseball teams.  It's almost a miscarriage of justice to have those two meet so early, but you have to play the team in front of you, and the field is not "seeded."

Curiously, why isn't it?

Interesting, but I don't really agree with his logic. If the seeds in the regionals don't hold, that doesn't mean the seeds (or process of assigning those seeds) were flawed. And yes, you're not going to seed it perfectly, but that shouldn't be a reason not to try. He's right that you have to beat teams sooner rather than later, but why shouldn't the best teams have the "reward" of, in theory, waiting until later?

But, it is what it is. Linfield vs. Ithaca should be great.
I think the most important part of his response related to the championships committee. It's not a baseball issue. It's an NCAA issue.

As far as naming multiple players to the same team, my preference is seeing one at each position and accounting for ties at the end. There are pluses and minuses to both schools of thought.

Then I guess you could forget that Murphy bats and put him on as first-team reliever?

As it is, he's punished because he does more (and well at that). He's a better pitcher than Etscheid, and he's also a better hitter. Yet Etscheid was first team and Murphy wasn't. I don't see a way to make sense of that.

And this would be a direct refutation of 2001's previous incorrect assertion, if anyone hadn't noticed. Murphy isn't a starting pitcher.
He may have been nominated at a position other than relief pitcher.

Ricky,  any chance you can expand on this?  How does the process work?  Does a player have to be nominated for consideration?  If so, who typically nominates and what do they provide the committee that selects the players?  Thanks
SID's nominate players by loading stats and bios. Many are rather elaborate and thorough, which is fantastic. It's been the site's policy that players must be nominated. It's rare, but sometimes nominations are received from SID's at competing institutions.

As an anecdote, I voted on the D-I baseball All-America teams this year. Last week I received some fancy promotional materials for some players. It hasn't reached that level in D-III.

Perhaps if there were separate considerations for "a little under half the at-bats of a starter." D3baseball.com chose to consider relief pitchers in its postseason awards.

Like I say, I know I lost that argument a long time ago. I think it's ridiculous and it's how you get bad choices like Bryce Murphy on second-team all-region. He actually is a relief pitcher -- the best in the region I'd venture -- but because he plays another position as well he gets DQed from first team because Meadows is the first-team utility player. Would have made much more sense to me to pick two utility players.

There's no separate position on the field for a relief pitcher...you're a pitcher. You toe the same rubber that the starter did. And if people are are going to consider BA againstm K ratios and such and such for 25IP pitchers vs. 60...well then I wonder what about batters with 75AB vs. 175? There's no difference...yet they're treated much differently.
Recognizing relievers is definitely not standard. Some conferences recognize them, some don't. There are arguments for and against, but I like seeing relievers getting recognized, especially when there are several fantastic candidates.

is that a serious question...what is different for pitchers and hitters?  Pitchers dont play in every game, that is why.  If a starting pitcher had 20 innings, playing in only 5 games, he wouldnt be up for discussion.  You must play, in my opinion, in a certain numbers of games to be up for an award.

Wow, talk about missing the point. No one was talking about starters...

But I'll go with it...relievers may be in more games but they still pitch far fewer innings than starters in most cases. Up for discussion are guys that have 25-35% of the innings that starters are pitching on most teams (Minnesota and Wisconsin excluded in this atypical season there).

So if those numbers I posted were put up by someone with a little under half the at-bats of a starter, should they be considered for All-American status?

Yeah. Clearly it was stupid to put another Pool B team in the field via Pool C.  :-\
Or two (WUSTL. SJF), if it pleases the court of public opinion.

Should be an awesome championship tourney. The polls agree. My final regular season ballot had:
2. Linfield
4. Ithaca
5. Kean (TBD)
6. Southern Maine
10. UW-Stevens Point
12. Keystone (TBD)
13. Manchester
14. Webster
18. Millsaps

Can't wait. Hope to see you there.

How about Kimberly's head baseball coach?
How about Kimberly's head baseball coach?

"Scooter" McGinnis??? He is also the AD at Kimberly. I am guessing he'd have to take a big paycut to make it happen. I was thinking of another former Appleton West Terror in either Matt Erickson or his father Bruce...

I am guessing that having that much tradition at UW-O, there will be a lot pressure to hire a Titan (Which does not bode well for McGinnis who played collegiately at Xavier, or Erickson who played at Arkansas).

Thoughts of either Jarrod Washburn or one of the Jorgensen brothers taking the reins ?
Yes, but that thought came from me. I had other thoughts, but that was one of the first. I doubt Sims cares about my thoughts.

Why would I have anything to explain? I didn't make the decision. I didn't write that I agreed with the decision (although I may have done the same thing at the start). I wrote that my guess was that UST would try to save a rested Thomas for the next game.

I doubt it was a matter of St. Thomas underestimating Case more than it was a gamble to gain a later advantage.

Sure this question will be posed over the next few days. Here are the predetermined matchups at Appleton.

G1 New England vs. South
G2 West vs. New York
G3 Mideast vs. Midwest
G4 Mid-Atlantic vs. Central
