Very fair analysis of the GAC vs NPU match.

I thought the first 30 minutes was pretty even in play, but after NPU's goal they really took it up a notch and had the better of the ball throughout long stretches of the game. GAC did a very good job defensively, and really limited NPU in the final third. There were a couple of shots that looked close, but generally they were not getting clean looks at goal. It was definitely a physical match and a lot of fun to watch. Not having Cattelin this weekend was definitely a blow to the Gusties, as he has put up big numbers all year and seemed to always find a way to make an impact, especially in big games.

I was quite impressed with NPU's Barriga, who played out of left back. He was very sound defensively and made several greats runs forward both with and without the ball that were very dangerous and caused the Gusties problems.

Shootouts are a really tough way to decide a game, but definitely create some great excitement. I'm sure the Gustavus team felt pretty confident sending Schwartz to the PK spot. Both keepers were diving early and often guessing incorrectly...Not sure if he mis-hit the ball or was just trying to be cheeky playing it up with the middle of the goal, but I couldn't help feeling it was not a well taken PK. Kudos to the NPU backup keeper, who did a great job stepping up making the save with his feet after having already dove to the side. He's probably waited all year for an opportunity to make his mark in a game, and he did so in a big way yesterday.

The good news for the Gusties is they are a very young squad, having regularly started 5-6 freshman per game and getting a lot of young players minutes in big games throughout the year. I suspect they are only going to get better.

Congratulations to NPU on a successful weekend. You've got a impressive team and I'll be pulling for you to take it all.

Agree 100% Jim. All around great production value and announcing. Very impressive work by Greg and the NPU team putting this one.

Gustavus with a late equalizer against NPU to send the game to OT.

Wasnít Galvao the statistical leader for Wheaton this year? Didnít see them play much, but doesnít seem out of the realm of possibility...

I also suspect MOST D3 schools do not have separate fields for menís and womenís soccer, like described at Amherst. In the Midwest itís pretty common that the two share the same game field.

Add St Thomas to the list of pool C candidates.

Gustavus with a 3-1 win to take the MIAC AQ!

While I certainly agree that SOS is a very important factor, what nobody has yet to mention is the consideration the committee must make as it relates to travel expenses. This has traditionally been a pretty significant factor in determining 1st and 2nd round match ups, and the committee will likely need to allocate more than the suggested 4 Pool C bids across the North and Central regions to make it all work...

Between these two regions you have 3 conferences that will have representation in the tournament by way of their AQ, but they do not have  representation in the NCAA Regional Rankings - UMAC, SLIAC and NCAC. You also have the likely Pool B selection in UW-Whitewater, who is also un-ranked.

Right or wrong, the committee is going to need more Pool C teams from the North and/or Central regions to keep teams from flying all over the country. This plays into the favor or ARC and MIAC teams vying for Pool C bids.

That being said, I'm definitely nervous that Gustavus would end up on the wrong side of the bubble in the Pool C discussion, as I think its very likely that the ARC will get 2 Pool C bids.

In the North Region...

Central, who is ranked #2 in this weeks North Region Rankings was bounced by Luther, 3-0, in the ARC Conference tournament semi-finals. Central should be in a good spot and a near lock for a Pool C. Loras and Luther face off tomorrow to battle for the AQ with the losing team also likely to get a Pool C bid.

The MIAC looks pretty good to get 2 teams in the tournament, especially if Gustavus comes out on top with conference AQ. If St. Thomas wins the AQ Gustavus will be on the bubble and could be left out.

DiTomasso has a very poor reputation throughout the Chicagoland, both at the collegiate and youth club levels. I am not at all surprised by the reports above, as I've seen it first hand at the U17-U19 club levels. His sideline demeanor is obnoxious. I know several youth players that had a lot of interest in attending/playing at Elmhurst but become very disenfranchised as DiTomasso's true colors start to show throughout the recruiting process.  Hard to believe he's lasted so long at Elmhurst.

Spot on Rudy. Its due to the results vs. ranked opponents.

What is a bit baffling is that UST is still positioned above GAC and Dubuque, even though they didn't win a single one of those matches.

Gustavus needs to step up their scheduling next year, pretty disappointing Non-conference slate this year, IMO.

ARC having a great year, they should see multiple teams in the NCAA's.

When are the first NCAA Regional Rankings set to be released?

Men's soccer / Re: MIAC to vote to oust St. Thomas

That would be a particular coup for UST men's soccer, since the Tommies would be the only D1 program in the Land of 10,000 Lakes in that sport. The University of Minnesota doesn't have varsity men's soccer. (It does have a women's soccer program.)

Agreed. MIAC schools have been fortunate to pull in a lot of the states top soccer talent due to a lack of a D1 offering. This could have big implication in recruitment for the MIAC schools if/when St. Thomas moves to D1.

Agreed. GAC and Carleton in particular need to improve their scheduling. MAC, Augsburg and UST all did a fairly decent job mixing in some big non-conference games.

I havenít once said GAC should be ranked in the top 25. Frankly, they havenít earned it yet...their most notable win was this week against a St Thomas team that has also struggled to get wins. But hey, their schedule is really strong, so maybe they should be in the top 25 too.

To Chicagoís credit, they did pick up a nice win tonight over a strong Loras side.

What I'm really bracing for mentally is 3 hours from now if/when Loras fans (who were as quiet as church mice last season) come out of the woodwork to beat their collective chests about beating a Top 10 team and that they are destined for the Final Four once again ...

SPOT ON Blue jays! lol

U of C certainly has a great SOS - no argument here. But if you can't produce a 'W' in at least some of those games, are they really a top 15 team, or even a top 25 team? I'm not sold on it yet. This year's squad has yet to earn that distinction in my opinion. Doesn't mean they won't, just that they haven't yet...
