How did nobody mention Mount Union's new QB coach yet?! Lol
It's none other than Kevin Burke! I just noticed it when scrolling though Twitter news. That's great to hear for the future of the program!

Thatís awesome, KB seemed like a stand up guy and a great leader. He didnít have the physical gifts of some of the other great UMU Qbs but he could run a zone read offense better than anyone Iíve seen at the college level. It was amazing how well he could fake defenders and pull the ball or vice versa in that scheme.

MUC57 -- I think a month ago someone might have considered transferring to a school which was going to play this fall, but that would have been a fool's errand. Nobody is going to play this fall.

I'll be interested to see how many participate in actual spring competition. I suspect we see a lot of very short schedules, like 2-3 games. But that would be fun to follow.

Is there no chance of a full spring football schedule including playoffs?

A full season with playoffs?  Play would have to start in February.

Very good point, I suppose that would be very difficult considering weather

I was imagining starting in March but then the season would go all the way until June if you did a full playoffs, then thereís basically no off season.

And they don't have to leave the state, so they don't have to deal with the possibility of managing different regulations for opponents in/from New York, Pennsylvania, Iowa, etc.

I feel like out of state competition restriction would have been a good solution as well considering Mountís non conference opponent is in state, but then weíd have uneven numbers across the conference

Mount's non-conference opponent is in Pennsylvania.

Oh Iím sorry I thought it was Defiance, that must have been last year. My bad, good catch Pat.

Looks like finally some clarity from the OAC with an official announcement.  No OOC games.  Conference only football schedule beginning 9/19.  Raiders open in Berea.

Because everyone knows that OAC students are less susceptible than those in other conferences to viruses in general and Corona specifically.

Well itís just a way to cut down on travel right? They donít need to have students in hotels or anything with an all in conference schedule, plus theyíll know as a conference what precautions they are taking, playing OOC could be a crapshoot in terms of opponents precautions/ testing etc

From the release:
Quote
To that end, the OAC is preparing schedules that maximize participation opportunities that lead to Conference championships and subsequent NCAA participation.

Intent to participate in NCAA postseasons seems pretty clear.

Oh thanks, whatever I read must not have been the full release, I didnít see that part.

It didnít seem clear to me if that was regular season only or automatically eliminated OAC teams from post season play

Kicker had 3 tries to make 2 and there would have been no overtime (3 to make 1 with OT). He went 0-3 down the stretch. How should they have won by 2 scores exactly? Unless you are counting our DB's falling down on 2 long TD passes, something they didn't do all year. Doesn't matter, we didn't do enough to win.

Actually, I am counting all of it.  DBs falling down, missed kicks, six penalties (including a terrible one after the touchdown and a worse one on the first missed PAT), two fumbles lost.  Team effort.  I can't look at that game and pin the loss all on one kid.  The Crusaders had the better team, were at home, and let loose with a stinker.

I watched the Cru look very beatable against Hardin Simmons in the regular season, I know itís just one game but that just didnít look like a stagg bowl UMHB team like Iíd seen in the past.

Yeah I saw him listed at 6-1 on A ranking site, that seems more likely

Justin Hill:  My height is 5í11 Ĺ, weighed in at 191 pounds and I ran a 4.56 at the pro day last week.  It was at Miami of Ohio.

Oh thatís weird, draft scout.com referenced that pro day, but said 4.68. 4.56 makes more sense.

If Hill doesn't get a shot somewhere I'll be shocked. 4.56 is not a blazing 40, its not awful  I'm sure he can improve that a little. Hes got great hands , ball skills , willing blocker dude can catch anything just throw it near him. If Mount had not lost so early in playoffs he woulda went over 2000 yds and prob 30 something tds. What more can a player do really. Things would be totally different if he even ran a 4.49 . I think all scouts see is the 4.5 and think this isn't a 4.4 guy. Game speed is different, hes fast. Someone give this kid a chance.

Where did you see 4.56? The pro day results I saw said he ran 4.68.

Another school becomes a victim to the pandemic, Urbana has closed its doors.  What a shame for its students and athletes. My son was told that Kent State has lost 12 million room and board fees this spring.  I do not know if that is accurate, but I was stunned at the amount.

It's sad for the students, athletes and employees.  I feel for all the folks who work maintenance, housekeeping, food services, etc. because it's not exactly like Urbana is overflowing with jobs.

Places like Urbana or, in our D3 universe, Defiance are always barely keeping their head above water financially.  I'm fearful of how far up stream these issues end up though.  I was talking with a buddy in Boston.  Obviously New England is littered with small schools.  He said there is already rumblings of several closing up there too.

We had some speculation going in another thread. I think most small schools will make it to this Fall, but if they can't rebound next spring with admissions, Fall 2021 is going to be a big problem. Personally I think you will see 20-50 colleges collapse between now and Fall 2021. The headwinds were already strong for many schools, and the expenses of this Spring, the lost revenue of this summer, and the potential lost revenue of smaller incoming classes, plus damage to endowments, is a savage combination.

Urbana was in a pretty rough situation prior to the pandemic. They were purchased by nearby Franklin University in 2014 to try and avoid financial collapse so technically they were kind of an independently branded branch of Franklin. Iím not convinced that admissions are going to be that far down in the fall regardless of if classes are only  offered fully online or in person, kids have already planned to go to college, not sure why delaying would be a viable option even if they are getting a lesser experience.

Seeing rumors that YSUís new head coach is hiring JCUís defensive coordinator. I believe they worked together at Iowa State.

I heard this rumor, but never saw it anywhere. This would be a big loss for JCU. Their defense has maintained a high level for years!

The La Crosse Tribune reported that Schaefer was a Top-2 Finalist for the UW-La Crosse job before the Eagles decided to stay in house with their hire.

I missed that news about Pelini leaving YSU as I have been consumed of recent. However, what do you guys think about that, and the new HC hire there? Also, that obviously would be a great opportunity for Schaefer (and perhaps one of those situations in life where one disappointment turns into a different blessed opportunity), but I agree with you it would be a loss for JCU. I also wonder how many of those other assistant coaches at YSU will be looking for new jobs? Always a fearful time for assistants when a coaching change is made, yet they know that is just part of the game ( business.)

I have a bit of insight on this as Iím both a YSU and Mount Union fan. According to the YSU message boards ALL of the assistant coaches are out except for the o line coach and the strength coach.

The new hire has been a little controversial, us YSU fans are always hoping for a splashier name to come in because of the programs history, but overall folks seem excited about coach Phillips. The Pelini Era was incredibly disappointing. We got one national title run, which was flukey because we werenít even the best team in our conference that year, but since then itís been mediocrity. Plus Pelini gave us one of the most embarrassing losses in program history when we lost to non- scholarship Butler.

But anyway, Phillips worked with Matt Campbell at Iowa State and mentioned him a few times during his press conference which was very encouraging to hear and a cool.

Biggest problem with YSU recently has been recruiting and it sounds like coach Phillips is placing a priority on it, so we are hopeful.

Also I meant no offense in the losing to Butler comment, obviously I have a ton of respect for non scholarship football, It was just the biggest upset of all time for YSU.
