Congratulations to coach Jim Miller and the Wartburg Wrestling team for their 21st consecutive conference title.  Most of these wrestlers weren't even born the last time some team other than the Knights won the conference title.
Amazing.  Congrats to the Warty Knights!

In doing some quick research I believe 21 straight titles is an IIAC record for any sport.  Both Luther and Central have had some long streaks in other sports, but I believe their streaks were snapped at 18 or 19 seasons.

And 165 straight conference dual meet wins.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

notlongago, how about suggesting another topic to talk about?

Old Dutch, I like your suggestion, I just don't think it's practical.  Big time athletic departments are technically non-profit.  Plus, I don't think we need additional laws.  We have enough government regulation.  I'm not sure I need more.

As far as giving in the IIAC is concerned...

2011 Giving - 3,477,265
2010 Giving - 3,938,196
2009 Giving - 1,881,338
2008 Giving - 2,616,028

Wow!  I always forget how solid B.V. is financially.  Dubuque and Central have come up a bunch since I last saw these numbers.

BVU has had the highest or 2nd highest endowment, along with Luther, in the conference every year for the decade I have been watching.  But, BVU has also had the lowest, or 2nd lowest amount of annual giving each year for the past decade as well.

Amazing.  Congrats to the Warty Knights!

It is amazing!  I still think back to my high school team going to Buzz Levick basketball camps.  Most of the trophies and teams on the walls were about the Buzz Levick era teams in hoops.  Wartburg had not started the turnaround in wrestling and football that seemed to launch everything else.

As a Luther grad, it always seemed to me that Miller and the 1990 Knights Football team changed that athletic department.  Maybe the department was changing because of others, but Miller and the football program were the clear signs to NE Iowa that Wartburg was changing.

21 straight titles is amazing, in any sport, but also in the toughest D3 wrestling conference its simply mind boggling.  Congrats to the Knights.  cough! cough! ('scuse me got something stuck in my throat there)

Lets face it Football talk is a big stretch right now, so how about a minor shift to politics for a moment.  In sight of  future tax reform our congress is diligently collaborating on  ;), how about a proposal to "narrow the base" of deductions AND support post-secondary education.  Chuck Grassley was spot on a few years ago when he criticized tax deductible contributions to big time athletic programs.  Who with a straight face can say these programs are non-profit?!?!

Lets make all donations to college sports departments be matched by an un-designated donation to the college's academic fund before any of it can be deductible.  Reduces the taxpayers indirect subsidy of the programs AND contributes to keeping tuition down for those hard working, studious college students like we all were back in the day.  whad'ya think?

Or just take contributions to any college for what ever reason non tax deductable.

Notlongago,  I see no political references here.  Mentioning Grassley is not a political statement.  Talking about what is taxable and what is not is not political.

I tend to agree with you doolittle there are enough laws out there.  If you look at some of the big money donors now if they have a pile of money with the new tax laws coming down the pike they won't be able to take a tax break anyway due to their income.

I think V-day is a crock.  That being said, I'm making crab legs for the Mrs. tonight along with a DQ Blizzard.

Put me in the "Like" category

I gave her a card...with a note about how lucky I am to have her in my life.

Gift certs to Starbucks and Barnes & Noble.

No chocolate or flowers...I suffer the rath if I get those.

She got me a "Home Brew 101" class at the brewery conveniently located across the street from my office.

IIAC football related story...a little while ago my wife showed me royal blue rain boots she had bought.  She then added "these are for the next time you drag me to a football game in the rain"  She is turning into quite the football fan now ;D

I liked Valentines better when they used to run more lingerie ads in the newspaper.  Seems like they’ve cut way back on that stuff.

I like Valentines day so much we went out to eat a day early to beat the rush.  Then found an interesting one on Thur. and were going to it until she found out the salmon stuffed with crab cakes cost $28.00 a head she decided the salmon with Jack Daniels sauce she made on Tuesday was enough salmon for one week.

It is getting slow around here. How many days till football starts?
