I have faith that Merle won't let the facts get in the way of his story.

I have faith that you'll say Mount has no chance to win a National Title due to OL and DL play the day before holding up another trophy next year.

I won't bring up SOS again....until late November of 2018.  I promise.  I hope Middle Georgia State football does well this year.  My mailman is such a nice guy and his wife and kids will be so happy to watch him play on Saturdays

Would I bash a D3fb school for playing a fake school if their SOS took a hit?  no.  I get that there are hurdles to scheduling games, but there should be a punishment for playing such games.  As long as the garbage team (Faith, Mid Georgia, etc) hurts team A just like garbage OAC teams (Wilm, Musky, etc) hurt Mount, then I think that would be fair.

I do agree that the NCAA avoiding dealing with these games in the selection/seeding criteria is not ideal.  It cuts both ways though- UWW didn't get appropriate credit for their games against NAIA's Morningside during that home and home series.

It's also not clear right now how the selection committee is using SOS.  Last year it seemed like they didn't pay much attention to it, unless it really underscored a decision one way or another.  But it was also easily brushed off when it wasn't supportive (say, like with Frostburg's at-large case).  The utility of that criteria is rapidly diminishing as conferences get larger and there are fewer and fewer out-of-conference games that create statistically significant SOS separation as it is currently calculated by the NCAA.

I don't think it's fair to say that Wilmington and Muskingum hurt Mount Union's SOS in a way that impacts Mount Union's selection (as an at-large in 2016) or their seeding (they were seeded fairly in 2017 and in every other year where they've hosted through the semifinals).  You're over-blowing that point.

I agree that UWW didn't get enough credit for scheduling Morningside.  SOS in D3fb seems like a flawed system to me.

This I agree with, especially in football, since there are so few games.

I agree the sos is flawed.
Specific to UWW though Iím not sure it hurt them in 2015. UWW lost a close game on the road to UWO in regular season, which I believe is the sole reason they had to travel in the playoffs to Wheaton, UWO and some D2 school in Alliance.
Can a reasonable case be made that UWW should have had home-field at least against Wheaton if their sos was properly boosted by the Morningside game?

The answer, I think, is no because if you somehow count Morningside then you'd also have to somehow count the game against Belhaven, which didn't count for SOS purposes in 2015.  Basically those games wash each other out and UWW doesn't see any significant boost.

I do think this underscores an important point though - even though the SOS metric is flawed, the people on the selection committee seem to be hip to it and aren't letting SOS drive obviously bad choices when it comes to selection or seeding.  So for the hand-wringing here about it, I'm having a hard time finding evidence that a suspect SOS has actually hurt a team that deserved better (or vice versa).  That's not an excuse to forget about trying to improve the utility of that metric, just noting that it hasn't led to catastrophic selection/seeding decisions.  Yet.

Well put Wally, doesnít seem like SOS has mattered for elites like UMU and UWW. I could understand being upset if I was CSWRU last year, being unbeaten and having to run into the Alliance buzz saw so quick, but it seems weird than anyone on this forum should really be upset about it.

My only question is that an "L" or an "i" at the front of his surname??

I don't know the answer to that question.  However, I will add that even I forgot that he played at Albion and then later coached at Michigan Tech.  Did not know that he was at U of Florida either.  Anyway, perhaps he can (hopefully) get Muskingum back to a respectable level and that next level for them.

I've seen a couple on twitter, including Scott from Frostburg, DiNardo from Catholic and I believe a LB from Buff St also. Joseph from Otterbein is at OSU pro day today.

with whats happened to Capital, and Wilmington is still in conference, that should be two wins on the year for a decent team.  Schedule yourself a D3 cupcake in OOC and you're up to three.  If Marietta can get a winning season, then Muskie could maybe, perhaps work their way to that with the right coach.  Seems like a lot of parity in spots 2-7 in the OAC.  Get Muskie into that group and you can bounce to a better job

Nice to see you back. I've missed your wisdom. I have posted from time to time but mostly on other boards. Been very quiet here, as you pointed out .
In this off season, I have been following the Mount Union women's lacrosse team . Good stuff. They're very good. And baseball is here now.
Have been to a few of the football team's practices. Can't wait. No one beats them this year.
I'll look forward to your posts. I usually learn something.  ☠🏈🇷🇴

Mount picked up a 6'5" WR from Parma, Dylan Herb.  Future redzone nightmare for opponents.
