Can anyone here help me settle an argument?
Did Phil Trier begin his football career at St Thomas before transferring to St John's? I have an acquaintance insisting that he did, but I think that's false and don't want to see a Johnnie's good name sullied by being associated with St Thomas.

It doesn't sully his name because he saw the light and came to the good side.

Itís down to seven days until the AFL season starts, nine days until the Hawksí first match in Adelaide against the Crows.  It was an interesting pre-season as the league introduced a number of rule changes to open up the game and they have had quite an impact, one in particularly is a horrible change and itís expected to be dropped before the season starts, but a couple others have really increased the speed on the field. More than ever elite fitness and ball skills, particularly accurate passing by kick to retain possession, will be critical to success.

Ever increasing fitness levels had changed the fabric of the game, oddly, as more players could cover more ground and what had been a traditional spread of players across the paddock had become more of an increasingly rolling pack of players following the play.  In a world-first development (rather than the usual hamfisted disasters that unwaveringly come from sports administrators), some surprisingly subtle rule changes have created an incentive to spread again and the pre-season games offered some really interesting play.

The Hawks are looking good. They showed some defensive setups that were very troubling for opposition sides. Itís difficult to see exactly whatís going on from the TV (you really have to be at the ground and see the whole field to understand the specific tactics in play) but it consistently choked opposition running lanes and always had a free man at the point of defense. It was utterly stifling and if that flows through to the season we may have a very interesting year.

Likewise, on offense they moved forward quickly and always had multiple options. They showed some great decision making and have the potential for some high scores if they get off the hook.

Basically, as with every season I reckon they are a lock to win it all.  :)

Yeah, and even more entertaining is how they got it.  South Australians (Adelaide's state) are often called "croweaters" (read as "crow eaters".
Australians speak so quickly and blur so many words together that they often spell them that was as well) in reference to the fact that when settlers and convicts first settled the colony they found food was very scarce and they ate crows to survive.  The nickname survives until today as an endearing reference.  Well, when the footy club started up and needed a name, the Croweaters is was although they settled on the Crows.

But it's a shame they didn't stick with Croweaters.  Would be just about the best name for any team anywhere.

EDIT: One of my favourite spell-it-like-you-say-it words is a town down Geelong way call Portarlington.  My Minnesotan has me trying to work that out and people laughing as I said "port ar LING ton".  Of course, it's really "Port Arlington" just spelled as quickly as it's said.

Although not a mascot name, one of my favorites is right here in Wiscy down near Lacrosse.

It's a combined school district of the 3 towns Gale-Ettrick-Treampealeau. For some reason in the past they decided to put those 3 town names in that order.

Therefore, the school is referred to and the buses all read on the side "G-E-T High."

And being good obedient Wisconsin teens, I'm sure they follow the school bus instructions! ;D

And nobody in the administration or school board sees that this may give the wrong impression of their school district.... ???
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
