D3 Football Map

I am a parent of a future college student.  He is looking at DII and DIII schools across the country.  I have used the maps at Wikipedia to help locate schools.  The site did not have a map of DIII schools.  I found it very helpful, so I created one.  I am attaching it.  It is your to use on your site if you wish.  Other parents and students may find it useful. I used the programs listed at Wikipedia for the source of information.  The exact locations are approximate, but should be helpful.

Thank you so much for compiling this.  This is one feature about the NAIA site that I admired.

Realizing this is only football, and maybe we can start working on basketball and then baseball, let the proofreading begin.

McMurry is on the south side of town in Abilene, TX.  Our rivals, Hardin-Simmons, are on the north side of Abilene!   

May I make one suggestion?  Is it possible to add a mileage scale at the bottom of the chart that has the approximate distances of 200 and 500 miles?

Outstanding job. I am amazed at the number of states that don't have DIII schools and/or the ones that only have one or two. Particularly Florida.

My method for placing the icons was similar to "pin the tail on the donkey".  I copied the format used at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football#Team_maps.  I wasn't shooting for accurate placement.  It just helps me visualize where I might be sending my son (and my hard earned cash).

I am in Florida.  We have no D2 or D3 Schools and only 2 NAIA.  So maps are needed for us down here.

I hope this is useful for others.

if he wants some sunny southern weather .. come and check out the Huntingdon campus in historic Montgomery, al.... a place where the history of the Confederacy and Civil Rights struggle come together.... we accross town from Dr Kings old church (Dexter Ave Baptist), The Southern Poverty Law Center, The State Capital, The First Capital of the Confederacy, the birth place of Hank Williams ( not junior..he was  born in shreveport, but calls north alabama home), a bunch of pro athlete, artist, musicians, and politicians (US Senator jeff Sessions-and Huntingdon graduate being one), next county over where the black panther party was started (lowndes co, al) and a plethora of good hunting and fishing   (note: the term 'a bunch' of is more alabaman than 'plethora'...but both r acceptable terms down here, depending on the company u keep)

the state that produced Harper Lee (to kill a mocking bird- who attended Huntingdon...but left due to ...uh... we can't speak of why...but her sister is a Huntingdon graduate) Joe Louis, Leroy Jordan, Barry Krause, Bo Jackson, Shug Jordan, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron (THE REAL HAMMER), Kenny Stabler-Joe Namath (from college), Pat Sullivan, Dieter Brock .....and on and on and on into the night..and where some feller they called Bear use to coach in tuscaloosa

Huntingdon is now in the SLIAC conference for football and GSAC for other sports...............and we can always use some more speed

Salem VA is the farthest logical venue south to the "population center" of D3 and farthest east that we can get to try to avoid the really yucky weather that can befall the midwest, northeast or Ohio River valley in December, without adding another 3-4 hours to the drive!

For those that haven't taken time to site see. On your next trip to Salem for the Stagg bowl, come a day early and go to Lexington and visit the campus of Washington & Lee and VMI which butt up against each other. Beautiful city and campus. Then if you have time visit Natural Bridge. And if you are in no big hurry, you are a short distance from Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Bridgewater and James Madison University. All have outstanding campus' and the mountain back drop on all is beautiful. Finally if you ever followed the Statler Brothers, their home town is Staunton (between Lexington and Charlottesville. Their corporate office is set up in an old school house and is open to the public.

OK, I am done being a tour guide. But if you want to come further east we have Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and the peanut capital of the world - Suffolk. (home of Planters Peanuts).  OK I am done. Nobody wants to talk on the USA South Board and I was bored.

old google map link .. not sure of the author, but it is a few years behind. I've tweaked a few things but it's in need of a major update.

Some of the logos are whacked out, i.e., an NJAC in SoCal, etc. If someone has the time, inclination and ability to fix it, message me and I open it up so they can edit it. I just don't have the time.

kickerdad - As someone who moved from Virginia three years back, you've made me a little "homesick" for the Old Dominion. My son went to a Lacrosse camp at Washington & Lee, and I concur with your assessment. UVa, and the Charlottesville area is also very scenic and tranquil.

Some Midwest schools also are having trouble filling their schedules.  Eau Claire and Whitewater are still looking for a third nonconference game.  Whitewater is already travelling to Puget Sound on Sept. 27th.  If someone has an open date on Sept. 13th or Sept. 20th, Whitewater is willing to play you!
