Coincidentally, he passed at the same time the conference was celebrating it's 50th anniversary at a gala outing in Lake Placid.

Was privileged to see him play, just an unbelievable athlete, who had all the physical tools, and skills as well.

In today's SI, there is an article about Randy Smith.  Having played in 906 straight NBA, he had to have been a special player.  To come from a d3 school and achieve this make it more remarkable.

Actually to clarify, Buff State when Randy Smith played was a "College Division" team.  This was before the D-II/D-III split in 1975.  There were scholarship players at the "College Division" teams, and many of the college division teams from those days are in the marginal (& not so marginal) conferences of today.  For example, Siena was a college division team, but with many scholarship athletes, LeMoyne, & Hartwick were also College Division powerhouses, with rosters loaded with scholarship players.

Just to put things in perspective, The final four that Smith led the Bengals to in 1970 was the equivalent of a combined D-II/D-III national championship.

Still amazing that he was an All-American at any level in three college sports, basketball, soccer, and track & field (he high jumped 6'10 or 6'11 in college.)  What is sad is that he played in the "no dunk" era of college basketball.

The only other person I know of who did this was Jim Brown at Syracuse, who lettered in football, basketball, lacrosse, and track & field, and was national class in all four sports, and arguably the best college lacrosse player of all time, and in my mind, the greatest pro football running back of all time, when you consider the size of the league, and the length of his playing career.

Word is that over the weekend, Coach Tom Curle quit Plattsburgh for a job at Marymount in VA.

Coach Tom Curle seriously considered the Marymount position but in the end decided to stay at Plattsburgh State. Cardinal fans are relieved and looking forward to this season.

As you can see from my name I might be a little bias but what about Fredonia.  The coach of the year     In the Sunyac and they r returning 4 starters that went to the confrence championship.

True indeed the Fredonia coach was voted coach of the year. But I would note that that  was somewhat unfair to the coach of Buffalo State (IMHO). I point to..

A - In 07-08 season Fredonia finished 6-10  and qualified for the playoffs.
     In 07-08 Buffalo State finished 5-11  and did not make the playoffs.

B- In 08-09 Fredonia finishes 10-6 and ties for 5th (and makes the playoffs)
    In 08-09 Buffalo State finishes 11-5 ( 6 games turnaround which has not happened in SUNYAC in nearly 6 years) finishes tied for 1st...and yet Fredonia's coach is selected "coach of the year"??

   Mind you "Coach of the year" and SUNYAC conference players are based on the regular season performance only. Votes are submitted prior to the playoffs. 
   Having said that. coupled with the fact that I am biased towards the BENGALS...I would say that the B.S.C. BENGALS should be the team to beat this year in the SUNYAC.
  With 2 starters, Junior-Glenroy Carr and Senior-Antonio Samedi, returning and a seasoned point guard in Sophomore- Norman Simmons, the BENGALS should be a favorite once the smoke clears around the first of Jan! They join Sophomores Ahmed Nagaya and Mark Gross as returning members of the "turnaround" team of 08-09.
    Newcomers Todd Jackson, Jake Simmons (no relation to Norman), Craig Elston, Yuseke Omote and Tyler Eustace add some serious firepower to this years BENGALS.
   A freshman class with the likes of Tyshieme Barfield (Syracuse), Seth Runge (Springfield), Anthony Hamer (New York City) and Justin Mitchell (Buffalo) add some serious BENGALS depth for years to go!

I'M SURE THAT THIS TOPIC WILL BE DEBATED FOR MONTHS TO COME AND I LOOK FORWARD TO BEING PART OF THIS DEBATE

True good argument for Buff state and Buff st coach but Fredonia beat you guys TWICE and by 20 the second time hard to argue with that and hard to justify voting for Ansari over Moore.  But enough about the coaches, I just think Fredonia plays better defense than just about anyone else in the league (ranked 14 in the country in points allowed) and has a playmaker in Cooper to lead a very experienced team that has been within 10 points of being SUNYAC champs.  Its very hard for teams to play Fredonia's style of play.

Cooper is a hell of a talent, but again Chris Ruiz is looking like he might be the best player in the league. Last year he had games of 41 and 39 in the same week. Sadly I'm very worried about my Potsdam Bears as we only have one player on the roster over 6'5" in Tom Kelso (who might be the biggest hot head in the conference ) and word on the street is Kelso might not even play this year because of legal problems.
