Most difficult schedules
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:39:11 am »
Which teams have the most difficult schedules? I will put my hat in for Johns Hopkins, whose out of conference schedule must be the best in the nation. This will more than balance out their below average Centennial Conference play.

On their schedule (non-conference):

Keene State
Eastern Connecticut State
Salisbury
Wheaton (MA)
Southern Maine
Western New England
College of New Jersey
Montclair State

Although they are not off to go good start, NC Wesleyan has a brutal schedule...

#1 Salisbury (twice)
#18 Marietta
#20 Christopher Newport (twice)
#23 Lynchburg
Emory (RV)
Rhodes (RV)
Piedmont (RV)
Ferrum (RV) (twice)
Montclair State (RV)

That's 12 games vs top notch opponents, that's not including games vs Franklin, Randolph-Macon, DII Barton, and DII Mount Olive.

The USA South might also be a morer balanced conference than the Centenial

I'd say Suffolk has one of the tougher schedules in the country.

Non-conference:

Eastern Connecticut
Southern Maine
2 vs. Keystone
Rowan
Ripon
Trinity
Wheaton
Western New England

Throw in probably 3-4 meetings with St. Joe's (ME), and I think they're up there, certainly.

Interesting article in last Sundays NY Times sports re UMaine Presque Ile Baseball team and how they play all thier games away due to being on the US /Canadian Border.  Spend thier spring on buses traveling to games as far south as Virginia.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/01/sports/baseball/01maine.html?_r=2&ref=sports

Now thats a tough schedule ::)

Great bunch of guys who have a passion for playing baseball!!!!!

Cool article!  UMPI actually does have a home DH scheduled for April 22.  Here's to hoping they actually get to play it.

St. Thomas probably has the most difficult non conference schedule from the midwest. They may not play many different teams for non conference but they play 3 teams that they will see in the regional tourney multiple times.

#12 St. Scholastica 3 games
#6 UW Whitewater 2 games
#23 UW Oshkosh 4 games
RV Depauw 2 games
University of Minnesota 1 game

I was going to mention Hendrix and it doesn't surprise me to see them at #4.  They went out west and played a handful of ranked teams and they also have played Millsaps 5 times, giving Millsaps 2 of their 4 losses.  I believe they have also played some of the better Texas teams.

I see that Millsaps listed at #13 on the list is only the 4th toughest schedule in the SCAC and Trinity gives the SCAC 5 teams in the top 22 on the list.  I find that impressive.

I think Wheaton (MA) needs a closer look. They always have one of the toughest schedules in the country. They have not reported and that is why they are not one of the top teams among that list. To name a few of the teams that they play this year:

#1 Eastern Conn.
# 8 Univ. of Southern Maine (twice)
Div. II St. Cloud State Univ. (Just missed the DII top 25 this week)
D.I Bryant University (23-9 w/ wins over Boston College and VT)

Suffolk
and
Curry (both of which will prob. be in the top 25 next week)

Included in the top 10 are 4 of the 5 teams in the SCAC West (Austin, Hendrix, Millsaps, and Trinity).  The 5th team, Southwestern University, would probably be up there as well except they haven't been on the Boyd list all year.

Count me among the Boyd's skeptics. I ran the first OWP numbers for the Central and Midwest regions. Don't know what criteria Boyd's uses, but they are not the same as the NCAA's. I know I don't have OOWP to make it definitive, but here some some contenders' unofficial (although confident I'm close) OWPs (through 4/20) from the C and MW.
