Centre got a scintillating performance for sure from frosh star Blake Scinta on Sunday as he scored 22 and recorded 7 rebounds coming off the bench as the Colonels' 6th man in their 71-60 win over Berry. Senior Bryon Ellis dropped in 21 as well, scoring 5-9 from behind the arc.  Scinta seems to have made a complete recovery from an early season injury as he fully dominated the Vikings in the 2nd half with 16 points scored in a full range of ways.  The 6' 9" power forward has the complete offensive package as he wore out Berry shooting 6-9 from the field, hit both of his 3's and all eight of his free throws.  As good as Scinta was in the final 20 minutes, Ellis literally kept Centre competitive in the 1st half by knocking down 4 threes and totaling 14 as the Colonels led at the break 29-21.  The Colonels had a tough time all game long breaking away from Berry but really never accomplished it as the Vikings hung tight nearly until the final whistle by getting to the foul line and converting most of their free ones.  Centre did a stellar job holding Berry to 33% shooting, but struggled a bit to get loose balls and consistently rebound on the defensive end. Tyler Wesley pulled down 12 rebounds for Centre.  Berry was led by guards Mac Whalen with 21 and Jonathan Abrams with 15.  Centre heads back to Danville for its final home series of the year next weekend against Millsaps and Birmingham Southern.  Thanks to Rhodes' last second win at Birmingham Southern Sunday, the SAA race now has three teams with identical 8-2 records leading the conference - Centre, Rhodes and Birmingham Southern.  All of this makes for an exciting final 2 weeks of conference basketball.

Now there are 2 top dogs in the SAA lead with Rhodes and Centre winning their respective games tonight against Berry and Birmingham Southern. The Colonels exploded for 45 points in the 2nd half after trailing by 2 @ the break to win 72-62. Freshman Blake Scinta scored 20 and Bryon Ellis had 18 in leading the Colonels. Tyler Wesley finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds.  Donavan Whiteside filled the stat page as well with 8 pts, 7 rbs, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Colonels play Millsaps Sunday in their final home game of the season.

Big game today on the Mountain as the Tigers take on B-SC.  A win today scores a new record for longest winning streak.   Then, we go on the road at Rhodes and Hendrix.

Sewanee gets record 8th straight win by beating B-SC 71-69; travel to Memphis to take on the reviled Rhodes Lynx on Friday.

Saw an exciting one @ Rhodes this afternoon as the Lynx got an Andrew Galow 3-pointer @ the buzzer for a 52-49 win over a tough-minded Oglethorpe bunch.  This one was a defensive tug-a-war most of the way.  Rhodes led much of the game but could not shake the Stormy Petrels as OU's zone wreaked havoc on the Lynx getting off clean looks offensively, and when they did, many shots didn't go down.  Each team had long possessions in the 2nd half and Oglethorpe enjoyed a few moments in the last five minutes with small leads.  This one truly stayed in doubt until Galow dropped in the winner.  Rhodes got very strong performances from Galow (15 pts) and Theo Hartwell who had 13 points and 10 boards.  Tyler Courson came off the bench to lead Oglethorpe with 15 on 6-9 shooting.  Both squads shot below 40% in this one.

The Centre Colonels won their final home game of the season over a gritty Millsaps team 60-46 behind 16 points from junior Donavan Whiteside.  Whiteside knocked down 3-4 from behind the arc to record one of his better outings this season.  The Colonels and the Lynx go into the final weekend of action with identical 10-2 league records.  While Rhodes appears in the driver's seat for capturing the SAA crown, next Sunday's finale between Centre and Rhodes in Memphis potentially could decide the winner.  :)

Sewanee I understand pulled out another impressive win today over BSU 79-61.  Maybe they'll be a serious challenge to Rhodes on Friday night ???

We'll be coming to Memphis on a eight game winning streak with one of those games being a thriller win against Rhodes on the Mountain.   Very good chance that the Tigers would get the win if the Lynx are downplaying Friday's game.   Don't think it'll happen given just how much bad blood exists in this rivalry.   I'd give the advantage to Rhodes given the home court.  But it's a case where I hope I'm wrong...

Centre drops a tough one @ Hendrix to a determined young Warrior group 59-58. Hendrix overcame 58-54 deficit in the final 23 seconds to win a big one. Centre heads to Rhodes Sunday knowing it is win or no 1st place.

Good game in Memphis last night as Sewanee kept the game tight with Rhodes to the end.

Game summary from sewaneetigers.com: http://sewaneetigers.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/releases/20130216xrz5n0

Interesting question:  Suppose Centre does beat Rhodes on Sunday... both teams finish with the same conference record.  Who hosts the conference tournament since the #1 seed serves as host?

Centre has a 39-23 halftime lead on the strength of 9 threes and a great matchup zone defense which has neutralized Galow for the most part.

Centre hung tough to defeat Rhodes 76-74.  With the Colonels leading 75-74 with 10 seconds remaining, Chris Taylor split a pair of free throws giving Rhodes one final crack at winning or tying the game.  The Lynx launched a three ball just before the buzzer that clanked off long giving the visitors the victory.  With the win, Centre earns hosting rights at the league tournament next week by virtue of 2 wins over Rhodes this year.  Both teams finished at 11-3 in conference play to share the SAA regular season title.  This game saw two great sophomore performances as Drew Miller nailed 27 with 5-9 from long range for Rhodes, and Josh Karsner hit 7-13 from outside the arc for 26 points in leading Centre.  Both teams sizzled from long range today with Centre getting 12 and Rhodes 11.  Rhodes nearly pulled this one out with a great display of offensive basketball in the 2nd half by scoring 51.

Centre is featured in this week's ATR:  http://d3hoops.com/columns/around-the-region/great-lakes-south/2012-13/centre-looking-for-redemption
Thanks Ron!  Centre opened up the SAA tournament this afternoon with a 74-58 win over Berry.  Not a pretty game, but the Colonels got good performances from 6'9" freshman Blake Scinta (18 points) and sophomore Josh Karsner (18 pts).  Karsner continued his three point assault by knocking down 4-9 from behind the arc.  Senior Matt Griggs came off the bench to get 11 points.
