Rhodes' double dip wins this past weekend @ Sewanee & Centre have moved them to 19th in D3 Top 25 heading into the SAA tournament which they will host beginning Friday. Matt Dean's Lynx might just be a leg ahead of last year's squad - stay tuned. Rhodes got a hard-fought win against Centre in OT. While squandering a double digit halftime lead, Rhodes showed grit & determination down the stretch with several of their top scorers on the bench after fouling out in regulation. Johnson & Smith made big plays in the OT to help the Lynx get their 21st win on the season.

Rhodes won rather easily tonight against Berry with Lauren Avant leading the way with 24 points. The Lynx will face Centre in the SAA final tomorrow based on the Colonels' strong 2nd half against Millsaps.  Rhodes and its talent, athleticism and the friendly home court would seem to put them in the driver's to win on Sunday. These 2 teams have played two close games with the Lynx winning both. Centre played a tremendous final half of basketball tonight & will hope to carry that momentum forward. Expect we will see some strong defense played by both squads in the final; maybe a game played in the 50s.

Rhodes advanced easily to round 2 tonight with an 83-59 win over Spalding University. Avant had 29 with Daniels getting 20. Rhodes coasted after building a 53-26 halftime advantage. The Lynx will match up Saturday (6 pm) against Texas-Tyler who looked sharp in their 1st round win over Maryville. Rhodes got the better of Texas-Tyler in an early season tilt at Mallory Gym. I believe Saturday's game will be competitive. Texas-Tyler has good athletes and 2 solid low post players who will present a challenge for Rhodes. A nice attendance turnout for Rhodes tonight should be equalled or exceeded tomorrow.

Tremendous pleasure to attend D3 tournament games again this weekend @ Rhodes. The Rhodes ladies did themselves proud again in playing exciting basketball while finally falling to a strong University of Texas-Tyler team by 3 points Saturday night.  Rhodes' Lauren Avant finished a stellar career by scoring 37 points in a dazzling array of moves & shots to keep pulling the Lynx out of a deficit against the physically intimidating squad from Tyler. While Avant was fabulous, my hat's off to UT-Tyler on their effort. Brittany King, the team's imposing post player gave a stupendous performance in her own right as she tallied 33 points and pulled down 17 key rebounds.  She knocked down several key free throws in the closing minutes to hold Rhodes at bay in their comeback
effort.  Have to give King Player of the Game though Avant was a close second. Rhodes looked to be down for the count several times in the 2nd half but on each occasion they erased double digit leads. The Lynx actually had one chance to take a lead at the tail end but were unable to take advantage of a turnover to get a final basket. Congratulations to both teams on having tremendous seasons.  Good luck UT-Tyler next week.

Trying to remember the last ASC team to get to the Sweet 16.  National Champion HPU in 2008! Just as I thought.

Season ready to start. Anybody have anything to add? Rhodes still the favorite even though Avant has moved on? Sewanee and Oglethorpe have new coaches. Sewanee hired long time assistant while Oglethorpe went for an alum with only a couple of years experience.
Anybody know anything. Almost time to get going.

Expect Rhodes to  field another good team; however there will be a drop-off from the Avant days.  Symone Daniels can be electrifying for the Lynx but she does not bring it consistently night in, night out.  Sometimes she gets tired, takes off plays and commits foolish fouls.  Still she is the go-to-player for offense on this squad.

With my allegiance to Centre, I hated to see their assistant coach Tom Campbell leave.  It will take a little time but Campbell will help return Sewanee to competitive basketball again in the SAA.  Centre has  the Guy sisters and Hartlege back this year; they won't be able to easily replace Baechle in the post and her routine double-double nightly but the Colonels have enough talent and depth to be solid in this league.  They have some tough games on their early season schedule including Thomas More.

Looking forward to SAA basketball!

Centre's soph forward/post Michele Judy has the size and skill to be a solid contributor, if the Maryville game is an indication.

Getting my 1st taste of d3 ball this season watching both Rhodes & Centre play in a tournament in Mallory Gym. Rhodes is deep & looks like a league leader. Centre has some talent but is missing 2 starters right now.  Both won opening round games Friday night with the Colonels defeating Rust on an Alexis Guy buzzer beater. Augustana is up 2 @ the half on Centre this afternoon.

Centre ladies kick off conference play on the mountain this Sunday against Sewanee. This could be an emotional day for the women as they are pitted against their former assistant coach Tom Campbell who is now the head coach of the Tigers. Lady Colonels are growing as a team with each game. and have one of their injured starters - Michelle Judy - seemingly back at full strength. They've had a relatively challenging out of conference schedule to test them early. Go Colonels!

Today marks the return to Centre of former assistant coach Tom Campbell who now leads the Sewanee Lady Tigers.  Centre beat Sewanee a few weeks ago on the mountain.  Should be a fun game to follow this afternoon.

I look forward next week to seeing Centre in Memphis playing a strong Rhodes squad on Friday.

Got to take in the Rhodes-Centre game last night. Neither team established much rhythm but Rhodes was a tad bit better on its home floor in winning 63-60. Sophomore Claire Smith knocked down 5 of Rhodes' 10 3-pointers in leading the Lynx in scoring. Centre fought hard the entire evening but missed on too many point-blank range shots in the game to ever take control. Statistically Centre was strong on the boards but was consistently weak from the perimeter when a few more threes could have made a difference. Centre bottled up Rhodes' go-to player Symone Daniels much of the evening. However Daniels defensively clogged the lane & generated several key stops & steals to throttle the Colonels' comeback efforts. Centre's Michelle Judy produced a double-double - 12 points & 10 rebounds.

League has really tightened up. Even though Milsaps unbeaten... have been pushed to the limit three or four times. If they get through this coming weekend with two wins should be enough to host the tournament. Big question though facing Oglethorpe team that gave them everything they wanted in Mississippi and seems to be playing better and second place Berry.

Don't we just love it that everyone gets to play again next week in the Hangar Dome!  Millsaps defends the home court effectively so I project they'll go dancing in the post-season once they close out a SAA tournament championship.  Think Rhodes still has the best upset potential of any of the other teams if they can continue to shoot the ball better as they've done of late.

Proud of the way the Lady Colonels pulled out 2 road wins @ Berry &  Oglethorpe over the final weekend of the regular season.  Centre will move on to the SAA Tournament @ Millsaps with some confidence after a long &  challenging year of basketball.
