Longest losing streak?
« on: March 08, 2016, 04:37:09 pm »
Figured I'd post this question on our message boards in case someone more enterprising than me can find the answer.

The Carnegie Mellon women have lost 46 straight games to Washington U, dating back to the early 1990s.  That's a really long streak, but is that an active record for Division III schools?

Caltech or Macalester likely have a longer record, right?

I could be, and often am, wrong, but I believe that the Wooster men have not lost to Earlham in at least 30 years. Considering they were in the same conference for much of that time, it would encompass more than 46 games if I am correct. But I have no access to Wooster's media guide from my tablet, so I can't verify. Maybe one of the many (mostly lurking) Scots fans can help out here.

Scranton women have current streaks of 50 vs FDU_Florham and 73 vs Drew.

Looks like the Scots lost 2 of the first 5 games that they played vs Earlham, but since that last loss in the 85-86 season they're 46-0 against the Quakers.

Macalester men team's longest losing streak is to St. Thomas but it is only 16 games (although it is active). Kinda shockingly low but really thats a long time without beating a team. A streak of 40 is crazy!

I'd be surprised if there's a longer head-to-head streak (remember, the streaks that are being mentioned in this room are not exclusively losing streaks, they're essentially neutral; they're both a winning streak for one program and a losing streak for the other) than the one involving Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Caltech. CMS, which is now the last SCIAC school that's maintained its lengthy skein against vastly-improved Caltech (given that Chapman's a relative newcomer to the league), has beaten the Beavers a whopping 84 times in a row. The Beavers haven't beaten the Stags since a 69-65 decision back in the 1970-71 season.

I'm not understanding your differentiation with the other streaks. Please elucidate.

There's no difference between them, ronk, except in length.

Thanks, guys. I knew you wouldn't disappoint.

Kind of stunning that Scranton has that long a streak on FDU-Florham, but it makes sense in retrospect. Coach Mitchell built that program after Scranton left. Maybe they can play each other non-conference. FDU is pretty ambitious in its scheduling and so is Scranton.

Kalamazoo has lost 38 straight to Hope.

Prior to going 1-1 the last two years, the Alma Scots had lost 43 straight to Hope. This is a team now in the sweet sixteen.  Helps you get a feel for the kind of turnaround Coach Hargraves and his team have made.

Wooster has had multiple long win streaks over NCAC opponents under Steve Moore, some of them still active.

Oberlin 47 (active, last loss in 1990)
Kenyon 46 (active, last loss in the 1995 NCAA D3 Tournament 2nd round)
Allegheny 39 (active, last loss in 1998 NCAC title game)
Hiram 35 (1999-2016)
Denison 30 (1997-2015)
Ohio Wesleyan 19 (1997-2006) and later 11 (2010-13)
Wabash 15 (2002-08)
Wittenberg 8 (2013-15)
DePauw 2 (active; Scots lead series 8-4 since Tigers joined the NCAC in 2011)

And over former NCAC teams...
Earlham 46 (active, last played in 2010, Quakers never beat Scots in NCAC play)
Case 24 (active, last played in 2003)
