2017 Polls
« on: March 14, 2017, 02:06:42 pm »
We can dismiss all those preseason polls.  The D3baseball.com/NCBWA (media poll) Top 25 is in week three and the ABCA (coaches poll) is out: http://muhlenbergsports.com/documents/2017/3/14//abcapoll_031417.pdf?id=645

The first thing that I noticed is that since the Top 25 has been out for three weeks, Emory was able to capture the top spot when they were 10-0 and Cortland had an early.  They have held it as they match Cortland loss for loss.

The ABCA poll looked at the teams when their losses were matched and Cortland did not drop out from the top spot like they did in the Top 25.

The big drop-off in this week's poll is after Otterbein at #20.  In the perfect poll, #20 would get 25 ballots worth 6 points each (150 points).

From Otterbein at #20 and 144 votes, we drop to

20 Otterbein 14-4 144 21

21 Roanoke 17-7 57 20
22 Cal Lutheran 14-6 50 rv
23 Washington and Jefferson 8-2 45 rv
24 St. John Fisher 7-5 43 23
25 Kean 12-7 37 25

and 7 more teams within 10 points of #25!

Catholic 36, La Roche 35, Bethel (Minn.) 33, Salisbury 32, Occidental 32, Chapman 30, Salve Regina 27,

I noticed this just before posting.  Nothing strange in the ballots but I think there is substantial agreement on who the top 20 teams are but not much on who should be 21-25.  The number of teams receiving votes also increased as expected.

I have kept Salve Regina on my ballot starting with the preseason and is a success of my predictive values.  Of course there are teams that have yet to justify my enthusiasm for their post season chances.

Two things will begin to help us in April.
We get more conference games that will sort out the pretenders.
We will finally get to see the strength of the northern teams who may have really bulked up their schedules in Florida against healthy competition but do not have the gaudy W-L records to show for it yet.

I want to see who declares themselves in the WIAC, the NJAC and the Little East.

Does anyone have the full list of Regional hosts for 2017?

Where will the South regional be played if hosted by Averett? Averett's playing surface is very nice, but not necessarily an ideal venue with regards to other amenities.

One would think that that's something that happens pretty soon. We're about a month away from the regional.

Will there be page designated for all conference tournaments that are being or have been played?

It would be great to see the landscape of when tournaments are, who made their respective conference tournament, who the automatic qualifiers are, and who may see a Pool C bid!

You bet.  I'll get it out today.

It actually can be seen now: http://www.d3baseball.com/playoffs/2017/playoff-central

Interesting that the Coaches thought that 3 teams who made it to the Regionals (as the "best" team in that Regional) ranked so far behind others that did not.  IMHO, that gives me insight as to how strong the coaches thought the competition to be in each region this year.

#13 North Central IL  (who knocked out #4 B-SC in the Central Regional)
#16 Roanoke  (Upset #8 Shenandoah to get the ODAC Pool A bid, beat #3 LaGrange and took 2 of 3 from #15 Salisbury in the South Regional)
#19 Wheaton MA (Mid-Atlantic Regional with #8 Shenandoah and #9 Johns Hopkins). Wheaton was the third New England team to be ranked in the Coaches Poll.
