SUNYAC well represented in the Region III ranking...deservedly so.

Unfortunately history has only two teams being accepted from SUNY AC (AQ  + one Pool C team) into NCAA tourney when its likely it should be more like four teams total this year. Maybe SUNY AC gets third this year with Liberty League only getting their AQ in...based on SUNYAC teams wins over their LL matches.

Quarterfinal matchups set

New Paltz travels to Buffalo...Buffalo has been hot the last few weeks. This will be a contrast in styles...Buffalo their third best scoring offense in the conference versus NP tied for least goals allowed. Buffalo plays more direct feeding their athletic forwards. NP will try to build out of the back. NP won the conference opener 2-0 at Buffalo. Edge to Buffalo playing at home. They have gone unbeaten in their last 5 conference matches (4 wins & 1 draw) If NP falls behind early they will be in trouble as they struggle to score goals.

Geneseo travels to Oneonta. Oneonta last two matches ended in Draws versus Platts. & Buffalo this past weekend. Geneseo beat Plattsburgh this past weekend which was a play in match the winne of the match clinching the #6 seed. Geneseo has played the top teams in the conference tough all season giving Cortland their only loss in conference play. Geneseo will be a tough out but after a big win versus Platts. beating Oneonta on the road is a tall order.

Cortland #1 seed & Brockport #2 seed earned byes.

Buffalo beats NP on off a flick on a Throw in...hard to see on video but appears as if thrown in landed in box near the six, and Buffalo player back heeled or flicked it in. NP had several chances to score in the first half out playing Buffalo but could not convert. Similar to to playoff matches in the last few years NP was out coached. Buffalo went to a higher press with two forwards in second to cut off the easy swing pass and to clog the middle of the field.  NP had trouble in the second half getting out of their own end and was left to go backwards to swing around and down the line. No adjustment by NP Coach until Buffalo scored but the damage was already done. Another curious move was subbing out three starters at once in second half of a 0-0 match. Buffalo travel to Cortland.

Oneonta with a PEN to tart the scoring beats Geneseo 2-1 and travel to Brockport Just caught a few minutes of this match in second half and Oneonta had it mostly under control.

#1 Cortland 5-0 #5 Buffalo State
#2 Brockport 0-1 #3 Oneonta

Cortland once again showing that they mean business. 4-0 going into halftime and were able to rotate to keep their guys fresh. Jack Coleman, who had been absent from the lineup since 10/7 vs. Geneseo (looks like it could have been due to a challenge late in the game), scored the game's second goal and will look to build his confidence after totaling 5 goals & 1 assist in the 2022 NCAA tournament. Never a doubt in this one.

Oneonta vs. Brockport was the game to watch. Both teams know that you don't want to leave your tournament fate in the hands of the selection committee - especially knowing Rochester has a massive opportunity to beat UAA champions Emory over the weekend. Oneonta got the game started with an early dangerous free kick by Ali Somow that hit the near post. Brockport had their first big chance of the half from a counter-press as Chuck Domm found his brother Russ just inside the box, but he was unable to make Oneonta GK Nate Hanna work too hard on the initial chance and rolled the subsequent chance wide. On a free-kick with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first, Brockport had an open header at the back post that was once again denied by Hanna.

Early in the second half, 2022 SUNYAC ROY Milton Mancias Magana took advantage of slow/sloppy play from Brockport in the back as he ignited the counter, driving centrally and finding Somow who earned a corner. After a delay due to an injury, Oneonta were able to make Brockport pay as they had a free header hit the crossbar from the initial cross and were able to bury the rebound. Frustrating from Brockport's perspective to be switched off during such a critical moment, but unfortunately that was the story of the day as they made several unforced errors throughout the game.

Oneonta had another chance late to put the game away, but were denied by Brockport GK Drew Taylor. Worth noting that the two goalkeepers are both graduates from Baldwinsville HS - and both had MOTM performances for their respective teams.

Tomorrow's Cortland vs. Oneonta match is the class of the SUNYACs, as the two programs have combined to win 9 out of the last 11 conference championships (Oneonta - 7, Cortland - 2). Despite Oneonta's history, I'm taking Cortland with a decisive win. Coach Steve Axtell has his sights set on a deep NCAA Tournament run and I have little doubt that their focus will be on anything else with each opportunity that they have the remainder of the season. They have 4-5 guys who are a constant threat in the final third and they go into matches with the mindset of imposing their will on every opponent. A win should give them enough to justify hosting at least the opening weekend.

Cortland likely secures first weekend hosting duties with a shutout of Oneonta.  Could be poised for a deep run but might be up against a NESCAC the 2nd weekend if they advance.  Some extracurriculars after the whistle as an Oneonta player completely blew off and ignored Axtell offering a gesture of respect, followed by him and Byrne having some words as a result.  I get that you're upset after losing but Axtell is a consummate professional and good sport, he wasn't patronizing.

Thoughts on the SUNYAC teams and their draws? I have to say I think Cortland is poised for a deep run with the weapons they possess, especially in the attacking third. Oneonta as well can definitely make some noise in their bracket albeit it's a tough one.

I saw the end of the game dramatics as well. Oneonta player, is very good, but a bit of a hot head.
A few weeks before he retaliated after he was slide tacked (red card) and went after the player and git his own red.

Cortland is deep as usual but their Defense is not what it has been last few years. I think they will make a run as well
Oneonta has been struggling to score last few weeks but they are well rounded and their GK j]has been playing well all year
