Just in time for the MIAC Tournament.
Do the Johnnies need to win the MIAC tournament to get a bid to the NCAA tournament?
My answer would be yes. SJU is ranked #6 in the region 9 rankings. In the
Top 25 Johnnies are receiving votes. The rest of the league isn't receiving much love.
It would be nice to make the NCAA's but I don't think the Jays have enough muscle to make much of run.
In their two conference losses they got pushed around a bit.
Thoughts?
D3Bubble has the Johnnies as a fringe contender, 14% for a pool C. https://fantastic50.net/d3h_men.html Whoever you play in the semis isn't likely to help this status much, so Pool A is the way to go this year. I don't think there's a killer team in the midwest the Johnnies can't beat. Would be tough to win at Platteville, but round 1 was pretty close.

D2 playoffs went with a a paywall https://x.com/steelepetty/status/1728919887496769850?s=46&t=g-or2FfQwhfEf-aUIDwBoA

As did Mount Union...paid for broadcast rights and the charged $10 for fans to watch a second round loss. How long before D3 playoffs are PPV?
It would actually be nice if all the playoff games were on a major platform like ESPN+, you'd pay just one monthly price for every game and be able to switch between games easily. This works pretty well with the FCS playoff games that don't make it to the broadcast networks.

On AO's original post - UNW volleyball has been on an incredible run for a number of years - I can't say that I've been to any games, but I do check their scores now and then and will certainly be looking to see how their post-season run goes this year.
Getting way ahead of myself here, but if the seeds hold up, Northwestern and Bethel could both be eliminating a Whitewater team on Saturday.
It took a pretty massive comeback (down 0-2, survived 6 match points) but we did eventually send Whitewater back to Wisconsin without the regional championship.  On to LA for the elite eight.

That's great!

I know next to nothing about Volleyball, but I would imagine that if you've got a team down 2-0, once they've come back and tied it, you're probably playing really tight for that final game.  My wife and I have met the Wilmeths before - SUPER nice people - happy for her and the team.
I don't know if tightness was really Whitewater's problem in the 5th set, we just seemed to put down the hammer. I'm no great volleyball mind though, still picking up little things even after several years doing the PA.

Also - AO - either you didn't post it here on the main board, or I just missed it - congrats on your pick 'ems victory, and thanks for doing it every week!
Thank you!

I love that Northwestern is great at volleyball. It continues that Minnesota connection in the sport across multiple divisions, and it's great that a UMAC program competes at that level.

I felt the same way when St. Scholastica was in the league and was having successful baseball seasons, although they never advanced out of a regional.
Minnesota certainly has some terrific volleyball talent, I was very impressed with what I saw from the gusties, bennies, oles and wildcats this year.

North Central (MN) 69
Augustana 62

Augie led this game for over 32 minutes, and had that lead up to 17 at one point ... and blew it.

Augustana has lost back-to-back to a pair of UMAC teams ... and we're by no means talking about the caliber of UMAC teams that Northwestern fielded when it was winning first-round D3 tourney upsets a few years ago. Not even close.

Things are really looking bad right now for Augie.
I appreciate the compliment to my squad, but the UMAC has a bit more balance than you might expect.  Crown and North Central didn't make the UMAC tournament last year but they weren't far off and Crown was missing their star (Cade Carroll) for a good bit of the year. All of that to say, yeah, this probably isn't a great Augustana team.

Is there value for BU and SJU to stay in the MIAC for football?

Where would we go?? If they fix the division/Champ game format there's not a reason to leave. But again, where are we going? The WIAC is a state school league. The UMAC is a massive downgrade in quality of school and competition. The ARC would be travel hell.

I also think there's value in the proximity and history for these teams.
It would certainly make more sense if the two D3 leagues in Minnesota for the 14 football teams each had 7 members, or maybe 8 and 6, instead of 10 and 4, when 10 means you don't even play 2 of the the teams. The downgrade in competition happened when you replaced St. Thomas with Macalester.

And CSS. But the suggestion was for Bethel and SJU to leave altogether. I don't love Mac and CSS from a competitive standpoint. I certainly don't want an entire slate of games like that.
Yeah I'm really thinking about the hypothetical coalition, not Bethel, that would have left the MIAC for leagues they would be more competitive in.

In other UMAC vs MIAC news, Bethel hasn't been too competitive with that team down Snelling in volleyball or hoops for a couple years now.  :D

If the Johnnies scheduled St. Thomas instead of Whitewater they're in the playoffs. Time to bring it back.

Final Regional rankings are out on the NCAA site: https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/football/d3/regional-rankings
Region VI
1   Wis.-La Crosse   7-1   9-1
2   Wis.-Whitewater   9-1   9-1
3   Saint John's (MN)   8-2   8-2
4   Whitworth   8-0   9-0
5   Bethel (MN)   8-2   8-2

6   Linfield   8-1   8-1
7   Wis.-River Falls   7-3   7-3

I fully admit that the following could be construed as a conspiracy theory, so I'm willing to be told off in spectacular fashion...

Any chance that the national committee overruled the RAC and bumped 9-1 Linfield over 8-2 SJU? Despite the Chair's statement that they're following the guidance of the RAC's, they do have the power to overrule if the RAC doesn't fit their worldview. With Whitewater as the obvious 1st Pool C and River Falls dropping to 7, everyone else is a Pool A leaving just the Cats or the Johnnies to go 3 rounds in the rankings. If record became more important to the national committee than RRO or SOS, its shady, but not inconceivable that Johnnies got stuck behind Linfield and never came to the table.

Coe 9-1, 1-1 RRO, .503 SOS over Linfield 9-1, 0-1 RRO, .510 SOS . With a win over an RRO, Coe is at least defensible from the committee in this scenario.

I fully agree with many on the board, it'd be nice to have more transparency on how to build your resume and then have the committee follow it consistently!
Those are the regional rankings used for selection, if the national committee made any changes to the advisory committee rankings they'd be shown here.

The WIAC board has an excellent analysis of the Pool C contenders and their resumes...give it a look.

It was a good read!

I can't pretend to be savvy enough to understand how all of the at-large bid rankings shake out, but I would have assumed that Wheaton is an lock, vs. being on the bubble?  1 loss against #1 North Central is the lone blemish on their record.

Augsburg's season is a little bit of a mystery to me.  They beat Gustavus, nearly beat SJU, get hammered by BU, but recover by hammering St Olaf, and then get beaten handily by Concordia, and need a close game to beat lowly Mac.
Wheaton's problem is SoS. 9 conference games for the CCIW means their SoS get dragged towards .500 and it will never be as good as the WIAC or MIAC. It wouldn't matter if every team in the conference beat a top 25 team.

Yes, though Pat and Greg firmly disagreed with him.  :D
I don't think the committee has ever considered the margin of victory in the last few games. That's definitely out of the criteria. Some committees have been more willing to compare scores or ranks against regionally ranked or common opponenents.
