With so little to read about in the sports world except the impact of the Corona Virus, I started reviewing (with many chuckles) some of the very early posts in rooms that I frequented...
it leads to the question... Pat or Ryan or one of the old heads can refresh my mind.... the very first posters were registered in late 1998, 1999, and many added in subsequent years, but the earliest posts shown are from Feb, 2005... different dates in Feb 2005 too for active rooms MIAA (Feb. 19,2005), CCIW (Feb 28, 2005), ODAC (Feb 15, 2005), seemingly cut off/restarted on different dates as they were obviously ongoing conversations. What happened then to restart posts? I'm thinking a new system? What happened to the prior posts? Gone forever? I can remember a couple of specific conversations that I was involved in that are gone, likely prior to the Feb. 2005 time frame. Were posts prior to Feb, 2005 still included in the individuals (active today) posting count total? I can't remember how active I was then, which would have included following Wash U as a huge fan (by then I had lived in St. Louis 10-15 years and had lost most contact with Hope), and then gravitated over to the SLIAC room...
Curious... and maybe we can use this room to entertain readers with posting stories of the "old days".....
Complicated story. Indeed, Posting Up, the oldest precursor to D3boards.com, was started just prior to the 1998-99 season, my second season running D3hoops.com. The original board was on a piece of software called Discus, which was actually created at Hope College.
This board, 22 years ago, did not have the capacity to create multiple pages with posts, and if a page got to more than 30-40 posts, it would take forever to load, especially for dial-up users, which was how the majority of us connected. So, for a year or two, I had to manually trim posts from pages because of the limitation of the software, but eventually it became something that was built into the software that I could set the board to automatically trim a board from 40 posts back to 25.
In the summer of 1999, we started Post Patterns, which was the message board for D3football.com. It ran off another Discus install on the D3football.com server. These boards did not and could not talk to each other, and users had to register in both places.
This, by the way, was silly. But then again, a board with both of those sports on it at that time probably would have overwhelmed the servers we ran on back in the day.
By 2005, a lot of these things were changing. More people were on broadband. It was cheaper to host a website and the servers we ran on were also faster. Registering a new domain name was cheaper. And, also, Discus seemed to be maxing out its potential and wasn't getting new features. So I registered D3boards.com, set up a new server instance and found a piece of software which would take the data we had and start fresh. But when merging two instances of Discus into one, I had to choose which board was the primary one, in terms of which list of members I could bring in, and that was the hoops board, because it was older.
So, I was able to bring over the 40-some hoops posts that were on each board at that time in 2005 and those were the new posts on D3boards.com. Since each board's 40 old posts dated back differently than the rest, that's why the start date (date of the oldest post) is different for basketball boards, while all of the football conference boards start on Aug. 16, 2005.
Hoops posts from prior to 2005 actually do count in a user's posting total, which I love.
You can find some old posts on the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive at archive.org. Here's a sample URL:
https://web.archive.org/web/19990210182339/http://www.d3hoops.com/discus/
Archive.org doesn't include anywhere near all of the posts, however.
Great response Pat... fascinating stuff for a long timer like me... Can't remember how I first heard about the site, wish I hadn't missed the first several years.
Going to check out that archive site....
The archive site is there and shows considerable activity from some of the conferences that had followers in 1999... unfortunately for some reason, the most active conferences, the CCIW, the MIAA, the ODAC attempt to come up, flash at you, then produce a blank page.... perhaps in the capturing of posts, there were too many in those rooms and they simply failed to be captured...
Had to chuckle that virtually the first post I read, in the CAC room, was :

I remember for a short while as I was hopefan and you were hoopsfan, I would refer to you as "cousin hoops"... ;D ;D ;D
I remember my comment about the alma mater being screwed out of an NCAA tournament berth was the "quote" (paraphrased to work best) at the top of the old board for a long time. :)

The following 5 posters would have made the list, but have not posted this past school year...
What has happened to: Maybe a current poster can tell us
Knightstalker All-American 3/20/2001 8101 did not post this past season, D3 hoops, NJAC
David Collinge Hall of Fame 10/20/1999 6934 has not posted since 2016 D3 hoops, NCAC
JT All-American 3/21/2005 5597 not posted since 2012, D3 football, NJAC
'gro All-American 11/26/2002 6237 not posted since 2012... D3 football, Liberty League
pg04 All-American 2/6/2004 7488 not posted since Sept 2018.... D3 football, East
I still see Knightstalker, David Collinge and PG04 on facebook. Gro, I believe, is with us under a different name. JT was banned for excessive political posting and ax-grinding but served his time and came back as JT2, where he has posted occasionally.
I was Rhino during my student years, but was what we'd now term a troll for most of that, so i created the new hoopsfan profile upon graduation and behaved better.

Happy they are each still with us... I read Knightstalker frequently in the NJAC room back in the days when that conference was a regular in the national rankings. Met Dave Collinge somewhere, probably an NCAA tourney game involving Hope and an Ohio school.. 'gro was a LL football poster, probably the most entertaining room ever on D3boards (I never attempted to get involved, I would not have come close to keeping up with those guys), but read it often as an RPI alum....
I'm having a senior moment... what was the young lady's ID who was such a great supporter of Wheaton? I remember seeing Wash U - Wheaton play and she brought me chocolate chip cookies due to some remark in the CCIW room.... as good as the CCIW room is now, her inclusions in discussions with Sager, TQ etal were truly the best.... Whatever happened to her?????

While going back to the Wayback Machine archives, I saw a post by Mr Ypsi, before he assumed the current alias in the witness protection program. LOL.

I do not recall the details of diehardfan's leaving well enough to post on a message board.

diehardfan was April [blanking on her last name]. The story I heard [someone please correct me if this is not correct] was that she was being stalked and sexually harassed by another poster. Pat banned that poster for life, but diehardfan dropped out for awhile anyway. She eventually returned periodically as April .... , but it has now been some time since her last post.
April...yes...the other name I couldn't remember... that brought a flashback of thinking I remember having lunch with her and another poster (crazy, but I'm thinking Dave Collinge) at a place in St Louis west end then going over to Wash U for a big game....LONG AGO...
And maybe for her privacy, her last name can be kept out of the discussion.

Probably, but diehardfan's first name was referenced often.
While my heated disagreements with FCNews aka Denny McKinney were somewhat infamous (though we always made up), history has lost my interactions with another poster that were seen by few, as it took place in the rarely viewed AMCC room. I would view that room regularly as some of the conference members were located in Western Pa. where I was born and raised. Well, one poster was UPB88 (this likely occurred in early 00's), and he was very proud of Pitt-Bradford's program... well as my first job out of college was at the U of Pittsburgh, I had been up to the Bradford campus several times in the early 70's, and believe me, NO ONE wanted to go to U of P, Bradford campus... isolated, snowy, and COLD... well I referred to it as a regional campus, and UPB88 went ballistic, as it had evidently gained some amount of status over 20 years... anyway, it was too good, it was Jim vs Dwight, so I got in the mode of posting about whatever UPB was doing, but referring to it as the Regional Campus of Pitt, at Bradford. Poor UPB88 would get VERY upset. The little devil in me came out badly on that one....
I was hoping we'd get a lot of memories of humorous writers or writings from the past here... unfortunately not yet.... another hopefan idea down the drain ::) ::) ::)

One of my favorite moments in D3boards history from the early era stems from the various ways in which we tried to moderate or ban posters. We didn't have most of the tools that we have now, so often people who were 'banned' would pretty easily find their way back onto the boards.
We had one poster in the CAC board who fit this description and came back a couple of times, including at least one iteration in which he created two handles in order to have a conversation with himself. We also had a poster in the MIAA board who was an issue -- I don't remember the details around why he was a problem.
In both instances, I made their handles a curse word, so even mentioning them on the board would end up looking like •••••••.
Fun fact: One of the posters I've referenced in this story is now a Division III head football coach.

didn't a WestConn fan once want to fight you at the 50 yard line in the Stagg Bowl, only they're WestConn so they never got within 3 rounds of the Stagg Bowl?
Yes, that was a thing. I think that was Rodman, and Rodman is now a high school football coach. Every once in a while, a former columnist of ours, Jim Stout, sends me an update on Rodman. :)
I have shown up at the Stagg every year since then and have yet to see a Western Conn fan.

I remember the bi-polar CAC poster ... sadly that technique is still used by some. They don't realize how easy it is to spot. HAHA
Reminds me of the time I got into a heated discussion with some anoynmous poster and things wgot pretty ugly ... until I looked up the profile; he didn't hide his email address (which contained his name and employer) so I exposed his identity. He tried to have Pat ban me, which went absolutely nowhere (thanks Pat!), and he disappeared from the boards with his tail tucked between his legs immediately thereafter.
Yep, Pat took care of a SLIAC poster who wrote some very unpleasant things... it was a very good and justifiable decision...

I've had to check the email addresses for several people including one who I think thought he was being clever and in reality wasn't. Even though I know the email probably wouldn't give me a ton of info ... it gave me just enough to realize what they were speaking on wasn't all that extensive in terms of historic knowledge. LOL
There was a guy on the SCIAC football board who has had three different handles, but not all at once.
He was promoting his son, who turned out to be a dud.
He started out by claiming his daughter was friends with a cheer leader who had heard how good he was.
He did similar things on a high school board and another board covering Western Carolina.
His son has finally graduated.
Good times!
What happened to the MAC Freedom board? There were many discussions among the Kings, Wilkes, and Scranton fans. Lack of interest since the Landmark began?
I suspect there's some of the Scranton-leaving part, but I'd tie it more to the end of Wilkes' dominance.
I don't actually remember a lot of King's fans participating, but I might remember wrong.

From my first time on here, which started around March of 2006 on the old LMC hoops/NACC hoops boards I remember a Maranatha follower named libero, who had a very dry sense of humor.

Hey, pg04 - good to hear from you! I also argued with JT on the politics board (which got me at least half of the 'smites' I have; a majority of the politics boards posters were obviously allies of JT!) (JT2 seems to have mellowed considerably!)
Pat is very conscientious and fair. A few years ago I exploded at an SCIAC poster in terms that I deserved to be banned for, as a number of posters demanded that I be. Pat responded that I had been taunted unmercifully for years for something that I never said in the first place, and, while not defending my response
per se, refused to ban me. Thanks Pat, for that AND especially for the website. :)
And sorry to have put you in that position! :( Just like JT2, I've mellowed considerably.
I don't even remember what I got banned for, but while I was actually attending Brockport I was quite annoying on these boards at times. After graduating I mellowed a bit. I kinda wish message boards were still a major thing because I like this format. Posting on social media isn't the same!
I'm not exactly sure when my first post happened, but I was able to see that I have a post from February 2005, although it's listed as a different username despite the fact that I've used the same log in information for the past 15+ years.....
One of my all time favorite memories on this board is the back and forth between Pat and titan2000, and then more recently AppletonRocks. I still believe they are one in the same, although I'm not sure that has ever been confirmed.
Yikes. I have to remember there's other boards besides the fantasy boards or even the men's sports-specific boards. 2 1/2 years later, I finally show up here.
I think I started a little before 2005. I remember The Roop. If I remember, I think he passed away.
Diehardfan and I actually drove out to Salem for Stevens Point's first championship in 2005. I picked her up at Wheaton College on the way there. She ended up staying out there to visit family in the area, so Swampgoon drove back with me late Saturday night. He rode out on the fan bus with his dad.
I was Shortround at the beginning for a year or two. Then I went to Old School before switching to Greek Tragedy when I got married...to a Greek.
